It’s not easy to do 57 straight of anything, so imagine what it’s been like for Martin Ware, completing his 57th and last North American Bridge Championship in St. Louis as part of the hard-working Tournament Services team.

Members of the services crew are responsible for a wide variety of behind-the-scenes activities at the NABC, including many of a logistical nature. The crew unloads the big trucks that arrive with equipment before the tournament starts, and they reload it when the NABC ends. With two exceptions – Wendy Sullivan and Murry Hayes – the Tournament Services staff is made up of tournament directors.

As Ware describes his job, it’s “working like a dog for 15 straight days – and I love it.”

On Friday, Ware’s friends and colleagues organized a party to recognize him for long and expert service, presenting him with a jersey with a big number 57 and toasting him with champagne. The jersey will be framed later.

The top-seeded Nick Nickell team, winner of numerous matches in come-from-behind fashion, could not find the dramatic rally against the No. 9 seed, Andrew Rosenthal, and will be watching the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams from the sidelines today as the event enters the semifinal round.

Matchups, by captain, are Rosenthal versus Sabine Auken, and Martin Fleisher versus Ricco van Prooijen.

Rosenthal (Aaron Silverstein, Bjorn Fallenius, Peter Fredin, Fredrik Nystrom and Johan Upmark) held a 6-IMP lead halfway through the match against Nickell (Ralph Katz, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Bobby Levin and Steve Weinstein). Rosenthal won the third quarter 43-12 and played about even in the final set to win 124-91.

Rosenthal will play the team captained by Auken, whose successful appeal of a director’s ruling during Thursday’s play changed the result against No. 4

Team Monaco. It was the second dramatic turn in the match, which saw Auken (Roy Welland and Danish players Dennis and Morten Bilde) stage a huge fourth-quarter rally to make the match close enough for the appeal to matter. Auken, originally seeded 45, won the final set 71-10, falling short by 6 IMPs.

The write-up of the appeal can be found on page 14.

In Friday’s play, Auken took on No. 5 Les Amoils, captain of the winning Vanderbilt team last year in Memphis. Auken jumped out to a 25-17 lead in the first quarter and was never headed on the way to a 139-124 victory, a fourth-quarter rally by Amoils falling short.

Smoking rulesTournament directors have receive complaints

about players smoking in the stairwells at the Renaissance Hotel. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the hotel property and is a violation of the law in St. Louis. Players found to be smoking in the hotel will be subject to a full board penalty in pairs games and a comparable penalty in team games.

Be consideratePlayers, please be considerate of others in

wearing perfume, cologne or other fragrance at the table. Many people have extreme sensitivity to such scents.

Missing jacketSteve Sturm reports that someone apparently

took his black leather jacket by mistake, leaving him with a jacket that doesn’t fit. It was taken at the America’s Center in the area where the Open Pairs was played on Tuesday. If the person who took the jacket realizes the mistake, the person can drop it off at the Daily Bulletin office or contact Marjorie Michelin (310-422-9330). The smaller jacket is in the Daily Bulletin office.

Don’t miss these free lectures in St. Louis from expert players. These talks will be held in Room 230 at the America’s Center.

The InsiderThis will be the final St. Louis Insider column.

Things get hectic as the Services guys try to close up bidding boxes, re-box leftover pencils, fold up tables and get three semi trailers loaded before the next groups move into the hotel and center. (It is always appreciated if you help by closing your bidding box at the end of play on Sunday. It is even more appreciated if you make sure the bottom clicks in place so that the cards don’t end up all over the floor.)

Even with the cold wind, it has been a great tournament. The playing conditions were nearly perfect. The hotel and the center workers were genuinely happy we were here and made us feel welcome. The directing staff, the employees from ACBL Headquarters in the greater Horn Lake Metroplex and the local St. Louis volunteers all did a wonderful job. The players did their jobs, too, by playing good bridge and running down the masterpoint inventory.

The Atlanta NABC—August 1–11—is going to be yet another super tournament. The Daily Bulletin has had several articles about the youth bridge events scheduled there, and we’ll also have the full slate of other events including the Spingold and its two younger brothers, Mini I and Mini II. Make your reservations now to join the greatest bridge event of the summer. Thanks for coming to St Louis. We’ll see you in Atlanta!

Grand Bar hours changingThe Grand Bar at the Renaissance Grand Hotel

will close at 1:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and will be available for later official inspection and review.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Free ParkingNABC guests enjoy free

parking at the Renaissance. The garages are located at 9th and St. Charles and 9th and Olive. Players must have a validated pass to exit each time. Passes are available at the information desk at the America’s Center and at the registration desk across from the Landmark Ballroom at the Renaissance.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSCommon errors – and how

to avoid themBy Brent Manley

Dwelling on the past

In the women’s team trials one year, Carol Sanders led the ♠A against 1NT doubled. Dummy followed with the ♠2, which was followed by the ♠3 and ♠4. “It’s a wish trick,” said Sanders’ partner, Betty Ann Kennedy. Said dummy, “I wish I had a better hand.”

In 1994, I wrote a book with Bob Hamman, who at the time was ranked No. 1 by the World Bridge Federation and had been for a decade.

In the opening chapter, he described a team trials from 1990 in which he and former partner Bobby Wolff were playing against Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell, whose team was ahead by 32 IMPs going into the second half of their match.

On the first board, Hamman and Wolff misdefended a doubled contract that should have gone down but did not, putting them even farther behind.

So what did Hamman and Wolff do? Do you think they stewed about the poor result, or tried to assess blame? No – they went on to the next board (and they won the match).

One of Hamman’s great strengths as a champion player is the ability to put every board he has played into the past as soon as the last card is turned. He doesn’t get upset about a bad result or mentally congratulate himself for being brilliant. Bob Hamman focuses on the board he is playing

right now – and nothing else.

Shrugging off bad results and keeping your head in the here and now is easier said than done, of course, but do you think you are going to give your best effort on the contract you are playing or defending if you are thinking about your silly error – or partner’s – on the previous board?

There is no magic formula for adding this attribute to your repertoire as a player. It’s simply a matter of practice. You must work hard to consign all results – good and bad – to the past, and you must do it immediately.

If the game in which you are playing has hand records, you can go over all the boards when the game is over. Wait until then to beat yourself up for failing to spot the winning line of play or defense.

It will also help your game if you can avoid discussing the bidding and play with your partner during the session. If you have trouble concentrating and forgetting about silly errors, how about your partner? After a critical comment by you, he may spend his time considering whether your comments were accurate – or he might be thinking of what he should have said when you broke your vow of silence. If any of that is going on, he won’t be fully engaged in the current deal and you are likely to have another poor score.

I have been watching top players at work for

more than 20 years, at national tournaments in the U.S. and Canada and at world championships. If the vast majority of these players have one thing in common, it’s that they don’t talk about the boards that have been played.

You may not be able to play as well as Bob Hamman or Jeff Meckstroth – at least not yet – but you can emulate them in one way. You can work on controlling your emotions and concentrating on the task at hand.

Nothing can change what just happened, and the sooner you forget about it the better off you will be.

West North East South 1♥ Pass 2♥ All Pass

Opening lead: ♠J. Bidding commentary: As North, you have a

maximum raise to 2♥. It is not a good idea to start with 1♠ when holding three hearts and fewer than 10 HCP. If you do, and partner bids 2♣ or 2♦, you are not well placed. You aren’t strong enough to jump to 3♥ (11-12 support points) and if you return to 2♥, you show a doubleton heart! As East, a non-passed hand, you are not strong enough to make a takeout double of 2♥. If you were a passed hand, you might chance it, but the double would be flawed lacking four spades.

Defensive commentary: As East, ask yourself, “How can declarer use this dummy profitably?”

There are three possibilities: (1) long-suit establishment, (2) ruffing losers and (3) neither.

Dummy is balanced. On this deal, long-suit establishment can be eliminated. You have the clubs covered and partner appears to have the spades. However, there is a possibility that declarer can ruff a diamond or two in dummy. Your counter move is to shift to a low heart at trick two. As West, if partner switches to a low heart and declarer ducks, win the king and follow partner’s defense by continuing with a heart. When later on lead in diamonds, play a third heart, killing any possible diamond ruff in dummy.

Play commentary: As South, if the defense plays a heart and a heart at tricks two and three, give up on trying to ruff a diamond. Try to set up clubs instead. Lead a club to the queen and later play the ♣A and a club, hoping for a 3-3 break. Sorry. Not this time. You gave it your best shot, but you are slated to lose two clubs, two diamonds and a trick in each major for one in the ashcan.

Golder North American Flight B champs from last year: Joseph Rice and Bjorgvin Kristinsson, District 14.

Golder NAP Flight B begins play today

Competition begins today in the Golder North American Pairs, Flight B — a grassroots event limited to players with 0-1500 masterpoints.

The first stage is conducted at the local club level and qualifiers advance to unit competition. Those qualifiers then advance to the district finals where three pairs — more, depending upon attendance — qualify for the North American final.

Winners will have their names inscribed on the Golder Cup and will also receive a certificate of recognition.

The trophy is presented in memory of Benjamin M. Golder (1894-1946) of Philadelphia, who died the day before the close of his term as 1946 ACBL president. He was named ACBL Honorary Member of the Year for 1947.

NAP-C Pairs compete for President’s Cup

Players in the North American Pairs Flight C, a grassroots event limited to players who have not yet become Life Masters, will begin competition today for the President’s Cup.

The trophy was presented in 1942 by Morgan Howard, ACBL president that year. The trophy was previously awarded to the winners of the President’s Pairs event, held at the Summer NABC.

The competition began last summer at the local club level and qualifiers then advanced to unit competition. Those qualifiers advanced to the district finals and three pairs from each district — more, depending upon attendance — qualified for the North American final.

The electronic device policy at NABCs has been revised to allow players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off.

Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the

sessionThe policy applies to all pairs, team members,

captains, coaches, kibitzers and play recorders, except those designated by the ACBL and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

Hard to resistBy Barry Rigal

The field played 4♠ on this deal after South opened 1♥ and it was hard for North not to lead his partner’s suit. Those who led a low heart conceded minus 450 painlessly.

On the ♥9 lead, South knew to duck as dummy discarded a club and West won the ♥Q. What now?

Easiest now is to draw trumps in three rounds, squeezing South on the third trump. South can pitch one heart, but the next discard is painful. A club lets declarer play the ♣A and another club to endplay the defenders again. A diamond pitch lets declarer play a diamond to the queen and duck the second round. A heart pitch lets declarer establish a third heart trick with one ruff.

Also note that on a heart discard, if declarer misreads the position after drawing trumps and plays the ♣A and another club, North has to unblock the ♣Q to let South win the second club cheaply and play a third club.

noted that he always looked forward to the NABC experience, even knowing it would be a lot of hard work. “It’s been like a kid going to camp,” he said.

Senior Director Jeff Johnston’s first NABC was in San Diego in 1994, coincidentally Ware’s first. “I didn’t know anything from anything,” he said.

Ware learned bridge in 1974 and a year later began directing at a club in Vernon BC, where he and his wife, Elaine, still live. The late Phil Wood was among those who influenced Ware to start directing at tournaments, and he did so for the first time in 1988. Throughout his directing career with the ACBL, Ware has been part-time. Until 2001, he had a full-time job in management at a government-owned liquor store.

Ware credits Bill “Curly” Holt with encouraging him to sign up for the NABC team – a decision he is happy he made.

“It’s immensely rewarding, facing various challenges in assisting the chief director, to come up with solutions in a way that makes the bridge experience better for everyone,” he said.

Ware said his duties include everything that happens behind the scenes at an NABC “except for computers and printers.”

It’s important, he said, “to anticipate what can go wrong and having solutions prepared so no one knows a snafu has occurred.”

Johnston said Ware is “always looking for ways to make the experience better for the players. He can walk through a room and see 14 things that need to be done, and he’s a team leader.”

Ware said the 2005 Fall NABC in Denver was his most memorable, mainly because of what happened at the end. He and other TDs were loading the trailer for its return trip to Memphis when the front became too heavy, forcing the back end 12 feet into the air – and into the roof of the loading dock.

Ware recalled that he used a pallet jack to lift the front of the trailer so the weight inside could be distributed properly.

Ware said he never planned to work past 65, which he will attain this summer, and he plans to travel with Elaine – including some visits to NABCs – play some bridge and relax in Vernon.

“I will miss the job,” Ware said, “but it is going continued on page 11

The ACBL is the inaugural partner of The Longest Day, a sunrise-to-sunset team event to raise funds that fuel the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. This event challenges participants to push their limits and complete approximately 16 hours of a consecutive activity. The theme for The Longest Day is “do something you love” – like play bridge!

When you register to participate in The Longest Day at thelongestday.alz.org you will receive a registration kit with:• Flyers to advertise your event to the community• Publicity tools to maximize your exposure• Items to decorate your club/event on The Longest Day• Giveaways for your participating players/team members

There is a whole host of online tools to help you recruit team members and fundraise virtually.

Here are some ideas for your fundraising team’s activity on The Longest Day:• Play marathon bridge games. The ACBL is relaxing the rules so all sanctioned clubs can hold as many special games as

desired on June 21, 2013. *Special game fees and upgraded masterpoints apply. All sanction fees collected will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

• Teach free beginner bridge lessons all day. It’s a great way to find new players and meet social/former college bridge players in your community, all while supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.

• Stage a bridge exhibition where members of your team play bridge in different public locations over the course of the day. You’ll get a lot of attention and even more donations for your team’s cause.

Approximately 5 million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s, but by 2050, nearly 16 million people could be affected. There is no cure, but some research indicates that playing mentally challenging games such as bridge may help keep your brain healthy. So do something you love on The Longest Day that might actually slow the onset of Alzheimer’s – play bridge!

Visit thelongestday.alz.org for more information.

The Longest Day will be here June 21st

When you reach a normal game (one that figures to get you a 55% score for making), how prepared should you be to risk your contract for an overtrick.

This was the auction at our table in the Silodor Open Pairs: West North East South 2♥ Pass 2NT Pass 4♥ All Pass

Your partner mutters as he puts down the dummy (2NT asked for a feature, and you didn’t show it) but the trump lead gives you options. Do you draw trumps and settle for 10 tricks (knock out the ♦A, which will surely be followed by spades from the opponents) or do you cash the top clubs and play for nine or 11 tricks?

I think the right approach is to play one top club. If both opponents follow with low cards, then ask yourself, “What club holding did East choose not to lead?”

Wouldn’t he lead a singleton club or from ♣Q J x? I think so!

So clubs are 2-2 and you should run clubs, of course pitching the ♦K so you can take a ruffing finesse for 12 tricks if West has the ♦A. Plus 450 was worth 58 out of 65 matchpoints.

Bid Box Alerts and Announcements

When using bid boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

World championship playwithout the team trials

You can play in a world bridge championship this fall without having to compete for a spot in the annual team trials. Your opportunity is called the World Transnational Open Teams.

The WTOT is open to teams composed of players coming from different countries, nominated by their national bridge organizations and approved by the WBF Credentials Committee.

The World Bridge Federation touts the WTOT as “a great opportunity for players to participate in a wonderful bridge tournament while at the same time having a unique opportunity to experience all the atmosphere and excitement of the final stages of the Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup and watch some of the greatest players in the world on the first-class vugraph presentation.”

Players eliminated from the Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup and d’Orsi Senior Bowl often enter this event, which means that participants entering the WTOT have a unique opportunity to play against some of the world’s top players.

Players wishing to compete in the WTOT should contact their NBOs and request nomination by the end of August 2013. There are no quotas, and NBOs may nominate as many teams as they wish.

The 9th World Transnational Open Teams will take place during the second week, starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The format will be Swiss teams. It is normally played as 10-board matches (five per day) for 15 qualifying rounds (150 boards). The knockout phase will commence with quarterfinals on Friday, Sept. 27, and continue with semifinals on Saturday, Sept. 28. The final will be played on Sunday, Sept. 29.

If 120 teams or more enter the championship, the knockout phase will commence with a round of 16.

After the ♦K lead, I shifted to a club. Declarer ruffed and cashed the ♠A – down 500.

Just for the record, if you play 6♣ on a diamond lead, you ruff in hand, draw two rounds of trumps, ending in dummy, cash the high diamonds to pitch hearts and lead a heart. North can win a high heart, but you have a ruffing finesse against the other top heart for plus 1370.

Ware

to be in very good hands. There are very good people on the crew.”

Johnston said his years working with Ware have been “a wild, fun ride.”

A pleasure to be of service

There’s a band of leprechauns hard at work behind the scenes at the NABCs—a party of wizards who, invisible to the players, see that supplies get where they need to be, rooms are set up for play, rooms are broken down after play, trucks are loaded and unloaded—then loaded and unloaded again, machinery functions and crises are quelled. As a group, these indispensable, unheralded heroes are known simply as Tournament Services.

The Services crew comprises five to nine men and women who arrive in town the Monday before the tournament. Some take vacation from their regular fulltime jobs to work the NABC. Except for Ask Me Girl Wendy Sullivan and Murry Hayes from ACBL Headquarters, everyone on the crew is a tournament director.

AMG Sullivan explains: “Three 27-foot tractor-trailers make the trek from Horn Lake MS carrying bidding boxes, brackets, convention cards, pencils, computers, printers, card tables (800 for St. Louis, 1000 for the Summer), child-care supplies, timers, extension cords and everything big and small needed to roll out a smooth NABC.”

Services crew hours are 7 a.m. to 1 or 2 a.m., according to Sullivan. “The hours are long. When the players are done for the night, we set the rooms to be ready for play in the morning. Our goal is that the players never see a problem.”

Open Swiss Teams begin play today

The Open Swiss Teams begin play today with the Jacoby Trophy going to the winners. This is a four-session event with two qualifying sessions and two final sessions.

The trophy is named for Oswald and Jim Jacoby --- one of the premier father-son pairs in ACBL history, the first father-son to win a national championship together and the first father-son to be elected to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame.

The senior Jacoby (1902-1984) won his first major title --- the National Team Championship of the American Whist League --- in 1929 and his last major title --- the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams --- in 1983.

In between, he won the McKenney Trophy (now the Barry Crane Top 500) four times. He was the first player to win 1,000 masterpoints in a single year and the first player to earn 10,000 masterpoints.

Jacoby won seven Spingolds, seven Vanderbilts, two Reisingers and more than a dozen other major titles. He was named to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1965.

He and son Jim are the co-authors of Jacoby Transfer Bids, Jacoby 2NT and other bidding ideas. Together, they won the Reisinger in 1955 --- when Jim was 22 --- and the Vanderbilt in 1965.

Jim Jacoby (1933-1991), elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997, won the Bermuda Bowl in 1970 and 1971, the World Mixed Teams in 1972 and the World Team Olympiad in 1988. He won more than 14 NABC titles and captured the Barry Crane Top 500 in 1988 --- the same year he won the Olympiad title.

Sharpen your techniqueBy Barry Rigal

On this board from the first qualifying session of the Silodor Open Pairs, the defenders to 3NT by West generally did a very bad job. Dlr: South ♠ K 8 2 Vul: Both ♥ K Q 4 ♦ A 10 6 5 3 ♣ 7 4 ♠ A J 4 ♠ Q 7 6 5 ♥ A 9 ♥ 6 3 2 ♦ K 7 2 ♦ Q 9 ♣ A 9 8 5 2 ♣ K Q J 6 ♠ 10 9 3 ♥ J 10 8 7 5 ♦ J 8 4 ♣ 10 3

A heart lead beats the game out of hand, but most defenders led a low diamond, giving declarer nine tricks plus play for more in the spade suit.

As the cards lie, all roads lead to plus 630, but it strikes me that you should cash one top club in case someone shows out. Then the right play in spades is to run the queen, not lead low to the jack. The suit might be 3-3 with the king in the South hand, perhaps in this layout: ♠10 8 2 ♠A J 4 ♠Q 7 6 5 ♠K 9 3

In that case, running the ♠Q is likely to keep South off play in the spade suit when leading low to the jack, won’t do the trick.

In order to keep the bridge public informed of appeal results in a timely fashion, the NABC Daily Bulletin staff publishes write-ups. Every effort is made to ensure that these reports are accurate and complete. Before they are published in the NABC Appeals Casebook, however, revisions may be made.

TOURNAMENT APPEALS

(1) Shows five hearts and, according to East’s explanation, denies four spades; forcing.

(2) West to South: No three hearts or four spades. East to North: No three hearts.

Contract: 3NT by East Opening lead: ♠5Table result: Making three, North–South minus

400Director ruling: Making three, North–South

minus 400Committee ruling: Down one, North–South plus

50The facts: The director was summoned at the end

of the hand. West told South that 3NT denied three hearts or four spades. East said he may or may not hold four spades. South said he might have led a heart with the correct information.

Five expert players were polled and all said that a heart lead was out of the question.

North won the opening lead with the ♠A and led the ♦8 (second highest, by agreement). East won the trick perforce and South played the ♦6. East then led the ♥9 to the queen, losing to North’s ♥K. North led another diamond. East led a second heart, South played the ♥J and declarer ducked, making three. After the dinner break, South said he would have played the ♦10 (upside-down carding) on the first round of diamonds had he been given the correct information.

The ruling: The director ruled that South is unlikely to choose a heart opening lead. Despite further discussion of the play and the director’s attempt to discuss the hand at the session, South never mentioned the play of the ♦10. Therefore the ♦10 play was ruled unlikely and the table result stands, 3NT, making three, East–West plus 400.

The appeal: South explained that his defense was predicated on the information that East had at most three spades. All his efforts were channeled into making sure his partner not play a second spade. The ♦8 promised a higher card, so he knew declarer could not come to nine tricks without help. North–South give suit preference in the first suit declarer plays, so he was concerned that covering the ♥8 with the ♥J might be interpreted as suit preference for spades. He was likewise concerned that discouraging with the ♦10 might result in partner playing spades. He also asserted that although he understood that none of the players polled chose a heart lead, he leads declarer’s short suit much more often than most players. He noted that had he covered the ♥8 or discouraged with the ♦10, the contract would almost certainly

have been defeated, and that both those plays would have been substantially more attractive with correct information.

East–West told the Committee that while they have no system notes, their agreement is in fact the one East provided to North, that 3♦ asks only about heart support, and that West’s explanation to South was erroneous. East–West also asserted that North ought to have known that her defense would prove ineffective. She was playing declarer for three spades. East–West open 1♣ with 4–4 in the minors, so East’s shape was by implication 3=2=5=3. South’s play of the ♦6 was thus likely to have been forced, and could not be relied on as a signal. East–West also noted that covering the ♥9 could be dangerous, sparing declarer a heart guess when he holds 10 9 doubleton and needs only a second heart trick for his contract.

North–South countered that with ♠K Q J x, declarer would almost certainly have unblocked before leading a heart, and also that with ♥10 9, he would likely have started with the 10 to entice a cover.

The decision: The committee had no reason to doubt East–West’s testimony that East’s explanation was correct and West’s incorrect.

The facts of the case made it clear that the misinformation made a heart lead less attractive than it would have been with correct information, but the committee agreed with the TD that a heart lead was unlikely in any case.

The facts of the case also made it clear that the winning defense would be more attractive had South had correct information. In effect he was defending in “three spade world” and gave no consideration to “four spade world.”

The committee discussed whether the North–South argument was timely, in that the argument regarding South’s carding was advanced only after the dinner break and that the initial basis for the appeal was only the possibility of a different opening lead. We found that North–South had no need to make the basis for their appeal known to the TD, just the fact that they wish to appeal. North–South might indeed have only realized at dinner the implications of the correct information on South’s defense, but the argument they made stands or falls on its own.

South might have a stronger case if he immediately told the TD how and why he would have defended differently with different information, but that is not what he is, or ought to be, concentrating on during the session or even before the short dinner break.

East ought to have realized when he saw the dummy that South had likely received inaccurate information. At that point, he could have and probably should have informed South of the actual East–West agreement. Not many players would realize this, and the committee judged that the failure to do so did not warrant a procedural penalty.

Neither North’s nor South’s defense may have been best, even given the information they had, but the Laws do not require perfect play in order to receive redress for damage. In particular, the mistakes, if any, did not rise to the level of “serious error” per Law 12.

The committee found that MI was present and that it led to damage. We judged that given accurate information, the most favorable result that was likely for North–South was plus 50, and that this was also the most unfavorable result that was at all probable for East–West. Accordingly, we adjusted the score per Law 12, to 3NT by East, down one, East–West minus 50.

Tell Me MoreJenkins had run into Bakhshi, a top player from England, in the lobby and learned that he was looking for a game.

The match-making couldn’t have worked out better for Cohen and Bakhshi, who parlayed two strong games in the final to win by 50 matchpoints on a top of 77.

Cohen rushed to the game venue to briefly discuss system with his first-time partner. “We played the two-minute system,” Cohen said. Translation: Bakhshi agreed to play the mostly natural system Cohen plays with his regular partner, Ron Smith.

The win was Bakhshi’s first in a North American championship – he has a second in the 2011 Vanderbilt Knockout Teams. Cohen now has five North American titles and eight seconds.

The winners were in 35th place after two qualifying session, but used a 59.13% first final to move into eighth with a session to go. Their 63.73% was more than enough for victory.

Second place went to Larry Robbins, Deerfield IL, and Robert Giragosian, Bakersfield CA.

Second in the Silodor Open Pairs went to Larry Robbins and Robert Giragosian.

Contract: 4♥ by SouthOpening lead: ♠7Table result: Down one, North–South minus 100Director ruling: Making six, North–South plus

680Committee ruling: Down one, North–South

minus 100The Facts: When asked by South, West described

the 3♣ bid as preemptive. East–West’s convention card showed it was intermediate. The director was summoned at the end of the hand. Declarer (South) stated that if he had known that the 3♣ bid was “intermediate,” then East could easily have had the ♥K. If he takes the hook, he makes 6♥. After winning the opening lead with the ♠K, he played the ♥A and ♥J to guard against ruffs.

The Ruling: Law 40.B.4 states that, “A side that is damaged as a consequence of its opponents’ failure to provide disclosure of the meaning of a call or play as these Laws require is entitled to rectifications through the award of an adjusted score.” Accordingly, the director adjusted the result to 4♥ by South, making six, North–South plus 680.

The Appeal: East–West appealed the ruling and attended the hearing. They contended that South’s losing line of play was not the result of misinformation. East and West both claimed that the explanation that they played intermediate jump overcalls vulnerable vs. non-vulnerable and weak otherwise was accurate and consistent with their filled out convention card. They also stated that vulnerable they would not make “suicidal” jump bids and that they had volunteered that information.

The non-offending side was not present at the hearing, but South claimed at the table that the explanation led him to believe the king of trump was offside and he feared a ruff in both spades and clubs were he to take the finesse and it lost.

The Decision: The Appeals Committee felt that although East and West would have done better to describe their vulnerable jump shifts as “heavy,” South’s line of play was inferior. A losing heart finesse in IMPs would still allow North–South to make their contract unless West had led from a five-card spade suit. The ♠7 made that improbable. Therefore, South’s line of play— though reasonable—in IMPs was inferior and did not entitle him to redress.

The recommended that East–West use the word “heavy” in the future to describe their preemptive vulnerable jump overcalls in the future.

The table result was restored to 4♥ by South, down one, N–S minus 100.

Time marches on, as doVandy picks by F & F

The girls have shown they know quite a bit about bridge and their men. They picked every match correctly, even to the halftime score. Let’s see what they have for the semifinals.

Fauna: Van Pooijan versus Fleisher. Mercy me, this will be a long, hard match, if you know what I mean. Fleisher is steamrolling their opponents and treating them poorly. Fleisher and Kamil are going for a double-double with only those poor Dutch teenagers standing in their way. I think that very cute Kevin boy and Mr. Eligible need to stand tall and will

be playing for the gold. Oh my, it would have been so hard to pick against my Zia 20 years ago, but time marches on.

Flora: Rosenthal has really played their hearts out. Some of those Swedish boys make me all aflutter. But my precious Sabine is going where no man has gone before. After a huge comeback to spank those Italian hotties, surviving a late committee, surviving a furious comeback by Amoils and that cutie Thomas, they have to be the team of destiny. I cannot pull against you, Sabine, but my heart is heavy over your loss to the Sweethearts from Sweeten.

In the semis, Fleisher will oppose original No. 6 van Prooijen, 206-84 winners over the Shan Huang team, originally seeded No. 35. Huang followed their upset win over No. 3 John Diamond with a 153-130 win over the Daniel Korbel team that defeated the Richard Schwartz squad, No. 14, on the first full day of play.

Don S. Hilleary of St. Louis MO was a long-time social bridge player who took up duplicate late in life. He died in 2004 after a short battle with cancer.

Don was a member of the armed forces. After he left the service, he graduated from St. Louis University in 1951, and became an attorney. He never really retired from the practice of law.

Don loved to envision bridge challenge matches, setting up a St. Louis versus Kansas City challenge in the late Nineties. Don enjoyed playing social bridge with friends, often joking that he and his partner might “have to eat at McDonald’s for lunch all week” after a particularly “costly” game, where he might have lost $5 or so.

He loved to tell stories of the early bridge pioneers. Don envisioned a charity game where the results would be compared against a table of experts. He died before that ever came to fruition.

There are many in St. Louis that still miss seeing Don at the bridge table.

Don, we hope you enjoy watching us today!
