JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSGood partner

By Brent ManleyWelcome to the Summer NABC. This

is my fifth visit to Chicago for one of these tournaments, and I can tell you that they have all been spectacular. The ACBL team and the local organizers really know what they are doing. You are going to have a lot of fun.

My custom with this column is to start with an amusing anecdote to remind you that bridge is meant to be fun. Today’s story hits on the main point of my message.

Sometimes you just can’t win. A player at a club in Pittsburgh was defending against 3NT when he revoked. He acknowledged the error even though declarer took all 13 tricks. Even so, declarer summoned the director, who told her, “Score it as plus 520!” Later, the same player found himself in 6NT, taking 13 tricks. He was chastised by his partner for not taking three tricks in dummy.

In 40 years of playing bridge and observing other players in various competitions, I have learned that the most important part of a new player’s bridge development is becoming a good partner.

As a new player, you no doubt are keenly interested in learning conventions, sharpening your play and becoming a good defender. Some of these skills – including good partnership – take time to acquire.

Bridge is a competitive game, and I know from experience that it’s easy to get wrapped up in the moment, focusing on the result instead of the big picture.

Suppose you and your partner bid to a slam that is odds-on to make. Partner takes an inferior line of play and goes down in a contract you would have made easily. It’s a bad board, to be sure, but it’s just one board. If you offer recriminations

instead of support, how well do you think your partner will play on the next board? How do you think the session is going to go if partner is embarrassed by your comments? Partner most likely already knows he flubbed the play. If you want to discuss it, wait until the session is over.

Think about it from partner’s side. Suppose it was you who blew the slam. Do you think you would play better if partner scolded you for your mistake? What if he said, “Nice try, partner,” or nothing at all. Big difference, right?

No one is perfect at the bridge table – not even the greatest experts. They will all tell you they are still learning the game. One many-time world champion once told me that even at the highest levels, the winners are often the partnerships who play “the least bad.”

I have spent a lot of time observing the best players in the world and I can tell you that, with rare exceptions, their excellent partnership skills are always on display. No matter what happens, they put the result behind them so they can concentrate on the next deal.

There are many aspects of bridge that require practice and study – counting, analysis, advanced plays like squeezes and endplays, drawing inferences . . . the list goes go on and on. These skills will come to you if you apply yourself.

You may not be able to play at expert level right now, but you can behave like most of the experts I have seen.

I haven’t always been a good partner, but I did

figure things out. I’m now enjoying the game a lot more, I concentrate better and, without having to worry about how I’ll react if something goes wrong, my partners play better too.

This is important. Make good partnership skills the foundation of your game. You won’t regret it.

Opening lead: ♣ABidding Commentary: Neither West, North

nor East has an opening bid. True, East is in third seat and can open a bit light, but it is hazardous to open a balanced minimum on a three-card suit plus losers as far as the eye can see. And let’s not forget the vulnerability.

Welcome I/N Players to Chicago!

Intermediate/Newcomer (I/N) games will begin at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. & 7:30 p.m. on most days. Most I/N events will be held in Stevens Salon B on the lower level.

The I/N Partnership Desk will guarantee you a partner if you sign up one hour prior to game time.

Don’t forget to pick up your registration gift.Celebrity bridge speakers will give free mini-

lessons at 9:15 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. on most days. On

Defensive Commentary: As East, you might cash two clubs or shift to a spade before cashing a second club. What you don’t want to do is lead a heart as partner may have the queen. Leading a diamond doesn’t look too cool either, particularly if declarer has the queen. If you shift to a spade, West will cash two spades and exit a club.

Play Commentary: You are playing against two opponents that have passed originally. Assuming you have lost four black suit tricks, you have seen East show up with the ♣A K (7 HCP) and East with the ♠A K (7 HCP). If you drive out the ♦A, whoever takes the trick will have turned up with 11 HCP so that player’s partner must hold the ♥Q. Using the bidding: neat.

Friday, Aug. 7, Bridge Bulletin columnist Jerry Helms will present “Selected Jerry-isms” at 9:15 a.m. At 6:45 p.m., Audrey Grant, one of the world’s best-known bridge teachers, will present “The Oldest Maxim.”

The Grand National Teams is a North American contest with all 25 ACBL districts participating.

In 1985, the event was subdivided into three separate events: Flights A, B and C. Another change came in 2001 when the GNT Championship Flight (for players with more than 5000 masterpoints) was created. Effective 2014, Flight A changed from being capped at 5000 masterpoints to having an upper limit of 6000.

The winners of the Championship Flight have their names engraved on the Morehead Trophy, donated by The New York Times in memory of its longtime bridge editor, Albert H. Morehead. The winners of Flight A have their names engraved on the Goldman Trophy, named in honor of the late Bobby Goldman.

Albert H. MoreheadMorehead (1909-

1996) was born in Flintstone GA and educated at Baylor and Harvard. Ely Culbertson hired him in 1932 because of his outstanding ability as a player and analyst and made him technical editor of The Bridge World in 1933.

He proved so invaluable that in 1934 he was made general manager of all Culbertson enterprises. He was only 25 when he played on the Culbertson team that defeated the British in the second international match for the Schwab Cup.

Morehead was the first bridge editor of The New York Times with a Sunday column from 1935 and a daily column from 1959. He resigned from the Times late in 1963 to devote full time to writing, editing and publishing of the dictionaries, encyclopedias and thesauruses that made him one of the foremost American lexicographers.

During those years, Morehead found time for tremendous service to organized bridge. He was an officer of the United States Bridge Association when that organization amalgamated with the American Bridge League in 1937.

He became a governor of the newly formed ACBL and served as president in 1943 and chairman

of the board from 1943 to 1945. He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1946.

Morehead was a member of the National Laws Commission and was in charge of production of the International Laws of Contract Bridge. He was also the author of the constitution of the World Bridge Federation --- the first formal definition of the scope, structure, powers and duties of that organization.

Morehead was named to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

Bobby GoldmanBobby Goldman

(1938-1999), who became a member of the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, enjoyed a stellar career as a player, author and theorist. His tournament record is impressive. He earned four world titles (the Bermuda Bowl in 1970, 1971 and 1979 and the World Mixed Teams in 1972) and 19 North American championships: the Life Master Men’s Pairs (1964); the Life Master Pairs (1968); the Open B-A-M Teams (1993); the Men’s Teams (1968, 1989 and 1991); the Spingold Knockout Teams (1969, 1978, 1983, 1986 and 1988); the Reisinger B-A-M Teams (1970, 1976 and 1980); the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams (1971, 1973, 1978, 1997 and 1998). Goldman also had 13 second-place finishes in NABC events.

At the time of his induction into the Hall of Fame, Goldman was an ACBL Grand Life Master with more than 25,700 masterpoints, and ranked ninth on the all-time list of masterpoint holders. He was also a WBF World Grand Master.

Goldman authored several books on the game, including Aces Scientific and Winners and Losers at the Bridge Table. His contributions to bidding theory include Super Gerber, Kickback, Exclusion Blackwood and Goldman after Stayman. He was one of the principal architects of the Aces Scientific System.

Goldman served as ACBL recorder from 1986-1988 and was a longtime member of the Competitions and Conventions Committee. His views on the game helped shape the modern-day Alert procedure, the ACBL convention chart, ethics and the appeals process.

Goldman was honored by the ACBL by being named the 1999 Honorary Member, presented for long and meritorious service to bridge.

Goldman’s early career was distinguished by his association with the now-famous Aces, the professional, Texas-based team created by businessman Ira Corn for the purpose of winning world bridge championships. Goldman was a member of the successful squad until 1974.

National Appeals Committee meeting

There will be a meeting of the National Appeals Committee on Friday, August 7 at 11 p.m. in the Lake Ontario room on the 8th floor at the Hilton.

Qualifications for teams participating in the Grand National Teams Flights B and C were earned in local-level events earlier this year. Flight B is 0–2500 masterpoints and Flight C is non-Life Masters up to 500 masterpoints.

Flight B winners will have their names engraved on the Sheinwold Trophy while the names of Flight C winners will be engraved on the Mac Nab Trophy.

Alfred SheinwoldAlfred Sheinwold

(1912-1997) was one of the greatest bridge writers in the history of the game. He was inducted into the Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

His syndicated bridge column was considered by many to be the best. He had a knack for getting his point across to even the least experienced players. He managed this by making sure that every column had only one main point, marking it easier for his readers to focus.

“You could read a Sheinwold column and know in an instant that nobody else could have written it,”

said Frank Stewart, co-author of the column. “He enlightened and entertained players through seven decades and earned millions of fans.”

Sheinwold was an editor of The Bridge World from 1934 to 1963 and editor of The Bridge Bulletin from 1953 to 1958. He was also the author of perhaps the most successful bridge book ever written, 5 Weeks to Winning Bridge, a book that sold in the millions.

Sheinwold served as chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission from 1964 to 1975, as chairman of the appeals committees at NABCs and as chairman of the ACBL Board of Governors from 1970 to 1973. He was named ACBL Honorary Member of the Year in 1983.

Robin Mac NabRobin Mac Nab

(1915-1985) served as a member of the ACBL Board of Directors from 1956 to 1981. He was ACBL president in 1965. He was a past president of the Western Conference, a member of the ACBL Laws Commission and a member of the executive

out that this year’s inductees were the 20-year class. Steve Garner, Weinstein’s longtime partner and

friend of 40 years, stepped to the podium to introduce the 2015 Lazard award winner.

Garner said he has seen the sportsmanship side of Weinstein up close and for a long time. “I have a secret to confess. I’ve trailed my friend for some 40 years.”

He says he put Weinstein to the test with his mistakes at the bridge table. “At times, I practically wore out my dunce cap. But never did I get the evil eye or the scowl – never more than a shrug. His fairness, generosity and good will always lasted long after the tournament was over.”

Accepting the trophy,Weinstein said he has always believed in treating others – partner and opponents alike – as you expect to be treated.

Weinstein first thanked Sidney Lazard for establishing the award, and the selection committee – Steve Beatty, Steve Weinstein and Zia – for the honor.

“My biggest regret is that my parents couldn’t be part of this. My father played duplicate bridge and my mom was more of a social player. And it was my parents who showed me what sportsmanship represents and what integrity represents.”

A proponent of what he terms “the spirit of the game,” Weinstein advocates promoting sportsmanship at all levels. Proper procedures must be in place to enforce the Laws, rules and regulations so that the outcomes are just, he says. “Most important, players are turned off by bad behavior. Especially at club games, it has to be recognized that tolerating bad behavior is a poor business decision.”

Grant, known for her dedication and success teaching bridge as well as her development of innovative teaching methods, was introduced by her husband, David Lindop.

“Easley Blackwood was one of Audrey’s early mentors when she started teaching,” Lindop said, “and so her selection as a Blackwood Award winner is especially appropriate.” The Blackwood Award recognizes contributions to the game independent of their expertise at the table.

Lindop detailed the varied mediums and vast reach of Grant’s teaching over more than three decades, including television shows, books, cruise lines and work with a variety of bridge organizations around the world.

Her “Better Bridge” series inspired the ACBL’s interest in training teachers. Working with the ACBL,

The von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs is a six-session event with two qualifying, two semi-final and two final sessions. It is restricted to Life Masters. At stake is the von Zedtwitz Gold Cup.

In 1930, Waldemar von Zedtwitz donated the Gold Cup, which was presented to the winners of the Life Master Pairs. The first winners: von Zedtwitz and P. Hal Sims.

Waldemar von Zedtwitz (1896-1984), ACBL president emeritus, was president of the ACBL in 1948 and of its parent organization, the American Bridge League, in 1932. He was named Honorary Member by the ABL in 1931.

When dissension threatened to break up the ACBL in 1948, the contesting factions agreed to von Zedtwitz as president and chairman with carte blanche power. He is credited with saving the ACBL. In 1949, upon the League’s rehabilitation, he immediately returned his carte blanche power to the Board of Directors.

He helped found the World Bridge Federation and played a major role in the formation of the ACBL Charity Foundation.

As a player, von Zedtwitz was noted for his versatility in playing with exponents of different systems. He was one of the first 10 to be named Life Master (he was No. 4) when the category was created in 1936.

Von Zedtwitz won many national auction bridge championships and nearly all the contract bridge championships. He and Barbara Brier won the World Mixed Pairs in 1970 when von Zedtwitz was 74 and legally blind.

The David Bruce LM-5000 Pairs is open to players who have earned Life Master status and have won up to 5000 masterpoints.

The Sally Young LM-1500 Pairs is open to players who have earned LM status and have won up to 1500 masterpoints.

The events are named in honor of two of ACBL’s all-time great players, both members of the ACBL Hall of Fame.

David Bruce (1900-1965) was one of the first 10 to be named Life Master; in fact, he was #1. A tremendously successful player in the early Thirties, he was known as a soothing partner but an unsettling opponent. Bruce played with Oswald Jacoby and Howard Schenken on the first of the outstanding teams, the Four Horsemen, captained by P. Hal Sims.

In 1933 with Schenken, Jacoby and Dick Frey (joined shortly afterward by Michael Gottlieb), he organized the Four Aces. This team took the leadership in competition and held it for the next decade.

Sally Young (1906-1970) was Life Master #17 and the first woman to earn the rank. Young earned success in open and women’s events. She is the only woman to “three-peat” in the Reisinger. Young and teammates John Crawford, Charles Goren

and Charles Solomon won in 1937 and 1938. They added B. Jay Becker to the squad in 1939 and won again.

Young also won the Reisinger in 1947 with teammates Jane Jaeger, Paula Ribner and Kay Rhodes. They remain the only all-women’s team to win a major open team event.

New Electronic Device Policy

The ACBL Board of Directors has revised the Electronic Device Policy at its meetings this week. The new policy goes into effect immediately.

1.11.1 The electronic device policy at NABCs allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off.

1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session.

1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session.

Say ‘cheese’ please!ACBL has retained a professional photographer

to update images for our publications and website. We are looking for you – Hall of Famers, NABC winners, tournament staff, Grand Life Masters, soon-to-be Grand Life Masters and Platinum Life Masters, Bulletin contributors, etc. You have a pass only if we’ve taken your photo taken within the past year.

On Monday, August 10, the photographer will be located in Conference Room 4C on the fourth floor. Please try to look nice.

Be scent-sitive!Some people have an extreme sensitivity to

fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The

ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances.

Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem.

The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention

card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Slow PlaySlow play, especially habitual slow play, is a

violation of law and subject to penalty. When a pair has fallen behind, it is incumbent on them to make up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not. All players are expected to make a concerted effort to catch up when they have fallen behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness.

In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, the director should presume that a pair finishing a round late by more than two or three minutes on more than one occasion during a session is responsible for the lateness. There is a strong expectation that the director will penalize such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to increase for subsequent instances of slow play and for chronic or egregious slow play.

While warnings typically will be given before a penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits the director’s authority to issue a penalty.

Players are expected to be aware, in a general sense, of time used and remaining in a segment in which they are playing regardless of whether a clock is in use or a time announcement has been made. An excuse of “no announcement” or “no clock immediately visible” will not be considered persuasive.

Grant developed the Club, Diamond, Heart and Spade books. She was also instrumental in creating the Teacher Accreditation Program, or TAP.

“Her books have been translated into French and Japanese,” Lindop said. “She has helped train Scandinavian teachers.” Bridge instructors in Greece and Australia are also converts to Grant’s teaching methods.

“Besides teaching and writing books, Audrey has received hundreds of notes from people who tell of how her teaching has changed their entire life,” Lindop said, specifically referencing Grant’s innovative ‘cards on the table’ approach.

“Audrey says, ‘I won’t ask you any question if you don’t volunteer. So don’t be afraid to make eye contact.’”

Grant’s is a family business, harnessing the involvement of Audrey’s 99-year old mother and her sister in addition to a son, a daughter, a nephew and a cousin, Lindop pointed out.

Grant was thrilled to see a lively contingent of her fellow Canadians in attendance. “Did they bus you in?” she quipped.

“I share this honor with David,” she said of her husband. “We’re a team.”

Grant singled out more than two dozen individuals for their support, influence and inspiration.

First up was Eric Rodwell, with whom Grant collaborated on “The Joy of Bridge.”

“Right after the book came out,” she says, “we were at the NABC in Las Vegas. Eric and I were invited to be on a late-night phone-in show.”

Rodwell was still playing, so Grant asked her close friend, Roberta Salob, to go with her.

“On the ride over, we were both wondering, ‘What if no one calls in? It could be a long hour.’

“We didn’t need to worry. People called in from all over the world! We met Eric after the show. He stayed behind because he was also worried that no one would call. And it turned out that Eric was every one of those people who called in!”

No one, not even Grant, resisted the urge to take a playful jab at Zia on Thursday night.

Grant called the opportunity to work on a book with Zia “one of the highlights of living in England,” Perfect, she thought – “Bridge from A to Z with Audrey and Zia.” But, she laughed, Zia apparently didn’t have that same alphabetical order in mind.”

Grant leaned forward passionately. “A trained teacher is a powerful thing.” By way of example, she offered Denise Hoffman who, using Grant’s materials, increased the size of her bridge club, quadrupled the size of the tournaments in her area and taught multi-level age groups.

Grant recognized Flo Belford, who organized 100 tables of students at a regional recently. “Then, a few weeks later, she taught 16 absolute beginners. They were the parents of the kids who played in the

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

How to Work Acrostics PuzzlesThe grid of the puzzle below is not a crossword;

it’s a quotation from a sequel to the bridge book that many historians consider the best written in the first half of the 20th century. The words in the quote don’t necessarily end at the right edge of each horizontal line; they only end when a black square follows a group of the numbered letters. And the unique thing

about acrostic puzzles is that the first letter of each clue answer, reading down from clue A through the final clue, will spell out the name of the book’s author … followed by the title of that book!

You will notice that ALL letters in the quote are numbered; these numbers are followed by a clue letter referral, which tells which of the clue answers

will give you that particular letter.Working in both directions … from the clues to

the grid and vice versa… is the secret (and the fun!) in solving acrostics. Just keep plugging away, back and forth, and BOTH puzzles … the quote and the clue answers … can be solved eventually.

Support the ACBL Educational FoundationThe ACBL Educational Foundation supports

activities for the purpose of instructing bridge, to increase the enjoyment of playing and the number of players. The Foundation has nine members: three from the Board of Directors and six from the general bridge membership. Members are elected for three-year terms, with a two-term limit. The Foundation meets three times a year at each NABC to consider all grant applications.

The Educational Foundation is funded by

voluntary contributions made when members join or renew their ACBL membership, through special games and events, and from individual donations. Donations are tax deductible.

During the past few years, the Educational Foundation has approved applications for a variety of bridge programs across the U.S. and Canada, including:

school-bridge program.“This is my vision of bridge. It’s a game for all

ages and, at its best, it can compete with any other recreational activity.”

In Lewis and Martin style, Steve Weinstein and Bobby Levin took the stage to prepare the way for Rosenberg.

“As everyone knows, Michael is one of the all-time best bridge players, but he’s also one of the best teammates and partners,” said Weinstein. “Of course this was tested in his partnership with Zia. Zia could be pretty tough on him and Michael always apologized. I remember one time playing against them and Zia revoked. When the hand was over, it was Zia who did the yelling. He said that Michael was thinking too long and made him lose his concentration. Michael apologized.”

Levin addressed Rosenberg’s partnership with his wife, Debbie. “When I saw them playing for the first time at the nationals, I said, ‘How long are you going to have to do this?’ And Michael said, ‘I hope forever – she’s my all-time favorite partner.’ And like anyone who’s ever played bridge with his wife, I said, ‘Yeah, right.’ But he meant it. And to this day, he’ll tell you she’s still his favorite partner.”

“Michael is the ultimate ‘pro’s pro,” said Weinstein. “I look at a problem in The Bridge World and my patience runs out after maybe 30 seconds. Then I look at the answer to see if I got it right. Michael’s patience is infinite, and he reads the answer to see if the author got it right.”

Both presenters credited Rosenberg for his work with the Junior program.

“We can tell you first-hand how lucky the juniors are to have Rosie working with them,” said Levin.

Rosenberg called the night an emotional one for

Hall of Fame inductee Michael Rosenberg flanked by his presenters Bobby Levin and Steve Weinstein.

him, “not only because I am being honored by getting this award, but also because all my children are here together.” His two daughters, Ivana and Jahna and his son, Kevin were in attendance. “I thank them all for coming, and for making this day even more memorable.”

Rosenberg credits his success to the great partners and teammates he has had over the years.

“First and foremost, there was Zia, who was my partner in many of my victories. I have gotten great joy, and a lot of other stuff, through my relationship with him. That relationship – now 40 years – played a large part in shaping me and what I know about bridge.”

Rosenberg’s survey of influences over the decades included Barnet Shenkin and Victor Silversone (70s), Ira Rubin and Matt Granovetter (80s), Debbie, his wife, and Michael Kamil (90s), Levin and Weinstein (2000s) and Chris Wilenken, Roy Welland and Sabine Auken in the current decade. “Each has added much to my knowledge.”

Rosenberg called out two more individuals who shaped him with their writing. One is the late Edgar Kaplan: “Reading his words on ethics changed my focus dramatically.”

The other was the late Pietro Bernasconi, who constructed Par Contest problems. “I got countless hours of education and pleasure from his work.”

Rosenberg saved the best for last, he said. “The most important relationship of my life, both in and outside of bridge, has been with Debbie. Her knowledge and support have been really important to me.”

Rosenberg concluded by relating the satisfaction he gets from working with the USBF Junior program – a program which, with Barry Goren, he developed and runs.

“I have received so much from others and from this game that I’m happy to do my part in giving something back.”

Paul Lewis, chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee, and emcee George Jacobs.

New age requirement for Senior events

The definition of a Senior (for the purpose of Senior events, tournaments, special games, etc.) has matured — from 55 to 60 years old. If you were born before January 1, 1959, you qualify to play in ACBL Senior events.
