NORCECA JUNIOR MEN'S U-21 CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Canada and United States Advance to Semifinals Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA (August 29, 2012) – Canada and United States advanced directly into the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship (U-21) after finish group play undefeated on Wednesday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Match 12: United States Blocks Mexico to Take NORCECA Pool A Title United States notched 13 blocks in a 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 victory over Mexico to win Pool A of the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship on Wednesday afternoon. By winning the pool, United States (3-0) advances directly to Friday’s semifinal round and Mexico (2-1) will challenge Pool B’s third-place team, Guatemala, in a quarterfinal match on Thursday at 17:30. The United States was led by Benjamin Patch with 14 points, while Douglas White added 12 points. Sergio Perez notched 10 points in leading Mexico and teammate Roberto Rincon came off the bench to contribute seven points. The United States possessed a 13-1 block advantage in the match and produced a 41-29 attack point margin. The USA, which converted 47.7 percent of its attacks, overcame 25 errors in the match. The United States led 12-5 midway through the opening set and held firm for a 25-18, using five blocks and benefiting from nine Mexico errors. In a close second set, USA scored three unanswered points to break open to an 18-13 lead and finished the set at 25-18 on a block. The U.S. used a 7-1 scoring run to grab an 8-3 advantage in the third set. Mexico closed to 15-12, but not get any closer with the USA winning 25-20. Match 11: Canada Wins Pool B with Victory Over Puerto Rico Canada won Pool B of the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship by defeating Puerto Rico 25-13, 25-15, 28-30, 25-12 on Wednesday afternoon. By winning the pool, Canada (3-0) advances directly to Friday’s semifinal round and Puerto Rico (2-1) will challenge Pool A’s third-place team in a quarterfinal match on Thursday. Canada’s offense was distributed evenly with four players in double-figure scoring and six players with at least seven points. Dany Demyanenko led the way with 16 points and Jarrid Michael Ireland added 15 points in the victory. Pedro Ramos Fernandez and Giovanni Llinas paced Puerto Rico with 14 points each. Canada’s net defense produced a 16-5 block margin and limited its errors to 17 in the match to Puerto Rico’s 26. Canada also held a 57-44 attack point advantage with a 57.0 success percent on attacks with Milan Nikic handing out 27 running sets. Canada used an 11-3 run to establish a 21-11 lead in the opening set en route to winning 25-13 with five blocks. Canada inched its way to a seven-point edge at 20-13 and finished strong with a 25-15 victory. After trailing 13-10, Canada rallied to take the lead at 22-21 with five unanswered points but Puerto Rico earned the first set point at 24-23. Canada saved three set points before taking the lead at 27-26, only to have Puerto Rico take the lead back at 29-28 after saving two match points and won 30-28. Canada raced to an 8-1 lead in the fourth set and never let up in a 25-12 victory.

Match 9: Guatemala Takes Down Curacao in First Win Guatemala won its first match of the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship with a 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Curacao on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, Guatemala (1-2) advances to Thursday’s quarterfinal round as the third-place team in Pool B. Curacao (0-3) will begin the 5-8 classification matches on Friday against an opponent to be determined. Guatemala was led in scoring by Gerardo Antonio Gonzalez Paz with 23 points. Christopher Leon Du John contributed 12 points and Erick Noel Colindres Ipina added 11 points. Quinten Anthony paced Curacao with 20 points, while Jurcham Meulens totaled 11 points. Guatemala produced a 13-9 margin in blocks and took advantage of 32 Curacao errors. Curacao held a slim 4-3 margin in aces. While Guatemala controlled the first set with a 25-14 victory, Curacao rallied back on a couple occasions in the second set ultimately winning 25-23. Curacao was within two in the third set at 21-19 before Guatemala tallied final four points and 25-19 victory. Guatemala pushed to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set and maintained the small, but comfortable lead to a 25-18 victory. Match 10: Honduras Wins First NORCECA Match Versus St. Vincent Honduras overcame a slow to capture its first match of the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship with a 25-17, 25-11, 25-20 victory over St. Vincent and the Grenadines. With the victory, Honduras (1-2) advances to Thursday’s quarterfinal round as the third-place team in Pool A. They will face the second-place team from Pool B. St. Vincent and the Grenadines (0-3) will begin the 5-8 classification matches on Friday against an opponent to be determined. Frank Alley led Honduras with 10 points in the victory, while Ricardo Vasquez contributed another nine points. Cristobal Mardiaga added eight points as the setter. St. Vincent and the Grenadines was led by Ijahlon Butler’s 11 points and teammate Jahmal Small added eight points. Honduras held an 8-2 margin in blocks and a 6-2 advantage in aces. Although St. Vincent and the Grenadines trailed only 32-26 in kills, its 29 errors in the match were a major factor in the final result. St. Vincent and the Grenadines stayed close through second technical timeout of the first set, but Honduras made a later charge to win 25-17. Honduras continued its momentum with a 25-11 victory in the second set taking advantage of errors. In the third set Honduras reached an 8-2, but St. Vincent and the Grenadines closed to 15-12. Honduras closed out the match strong at 25-20.
