6The National Consumer Day is observed every year in India on 24th December.

6On this day the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the President.

6The Department of Consumer Affairs under the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution is celebrating this day this year with the theme “Alternate Consumer Disputes Redressal”.

6Eminent modern Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh was chosen for the prestigious Jnanpith Award for the year 2016.

6He is the 52nd recipient of Jnanpith Award.

6He is sixth Bengali litterateur to bag this prestigious literary award after Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay (1966), Bishnu Dey (1971), Ashapoorna Devi (1976), Subhash Mukhopadhyay (1991) and Mahasweta Devi (1966).

6ICICI Bank, India's largest private sector bank has launched EazyPay mobile application for merchants that allows all-in-one acceptance payments platform.

6This app consolidates all digital wallets, QR code, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and credit & debit cards modes of payments.

6With this, ICICI Bank became first bank in the country to roll out all-in-one payments platform.

6It has 'open architecture' which makes it distinct from other digital payments that are actually closed-loop prepaid instruments.

6It also has its in-built billing application for merchants.

6It also allows merchants to receive payments from ICICI Bank's own e-wallet 'Pockets'.

6Puducherry Govt has announced the implementation of 3% reservation for differently-abled persons in government jobs in the Union Territory.

6It was announced by Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi.

6The reservation is provided in par with the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995.

6The Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced new passport rules by changing Passport Rules, 1980 in order to streamline, liberalize and ease the process of issue of passport.

6The new rules aim to speed up and simplify the passport delivery process and will help single mothers, orphaned children, and sadhus obtain passports with ease.

6It will also eliminate the role of non-government agents and touts. Besides, passport-related grievances will now be handled on the social media platform of Twitter.

6Birth certificate is no longer mandatory for getting passport.

6Applicants can submit PAN Card, birth certificate, voter id, Aadhaar, driving licence.

6Henceforth, applicant of online passport application will only need to provide the name of only one parent and not both or of legal guardian. This will enable single parents to apply for passports for their children.

6Besides, married applicants will not be required to provide any marriage certificate.

6Married applicants can apply for passport without attaching their marriage certificate.

6Holy men can now apply for a passport with the name of their spiritual guru, instead of biological parents.

6The Odisha Govt launched the Biju Sishu Surakshya Yojana, a scheme to nurture the orphan and HIV-infected children residing in different child care institutions and orphanages.

6The main aim of the scheme is to facilitate care and protection towards orphans and HIV infected children of the state.

6It will act and supplement for providing additional resources and complementary modalities to the existing centrally sponsored schemes.

Uttar Pradesh govt has approved a proposal to include 17 Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the Scheduled Class (SC) list.

6The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed confidence that a prototype vaccine for Ebola may be 100% effective in protecting against the deadly virus.
