Daily Current Affairs - 24.12.2016 www.race4bankexams.in 1 Rishi Academy of Competitive Exams TM December 24: National Consumer Day Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh chosen for 2016 Jnanpith Award ICICI Bank launches EazyPay app for Merchants Puducherry introduces 3% quota for disabled in Government jobs MEA announces new rules to ease process of getting passport 6 The National Consumer Day is observed every year in India on 24th December. 6 On this day the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the President. 6 The Department of Consumer Affairs under the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution is celebrating this day this year with the theme “Alternate Consumer Disputes Redressal”. 6 Eminent modern Bengali poet Shankha Ghosh was chosen for the prestigious Jnanpith Award for the year 2016. 6 He is the 52nd recipient of Jnanpith Award. 6 He is sixth Bengali litterateur to bag this prestigious literary award after Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay (1966), Bishnu Dey (1971), Ashapoorna Devi (1976), Subhash Mukhopadhyay (1991) and Mahasweta Devi (1966). 6 ICICI Bank, India's largest private sector bank has launched EazyPay mobile application for merchants that allows all-in-one acceptance payments platform. 6 This app consolidates all digital wallets, QR code, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and credit & debit cards modes of payments. 6 With this, ICICI Bank became first bank in the country to roll out all-in-one payments platform. 6 It has 'open architecture' which makes it distinct from other digital payments that are actually closed-loop prepaid instruments. 6 It also has its in-built billing application for merchants. 6 It also allows merchants to receive payments from ICICI Bank's own e-wallet 'Pockets'. 6 Puducherry Govt has announced the implementation of 3% reservation for differently-abled persons in government jobs in the Union Territory. 6 It was announced by Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi. 6 The reservation is provided in par with the provisions of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995. 6 The Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced new passport rules by changing Passport Rules, 1980 in order to streamline, liberalize and ease the process of issue of passport. 6 The new rules aim to speed up and simplify the passport delivery process and will help single mothers, orphaned children, and sadhus obtain passports with ease. 6 It will also eliminate the role of non-government agents and touts. Besides, passport-related grievances will now be handled on the social media platform of Twitter. 6 Birth certificate is no longer mandatory for getting passport. 6 Applicants can submit PAN Card, birth certificate, voter id, Aadhaar, driving licence. 6 Henceforth, applicant of online passport application will only need to provide the name of only one parent and not both or of legal guardian. This will enable single parents to apply for passports for their children. 6 Besides, married applicants will not be required to provide any marriage certificate. 6 Married applicants can apply for passport without attaching their marriage certificate. 6 Holy men can now apply for a passport with the name of their spiritual guru, instead of biological parents. 6 The Odisha Govt launched the Biju Sishu Surakshya Yojana, a scheme to nurture the orphan and HIV- infected children residing in different child care institutions and orphanages. 6 The main aim of the scheme is to facilitate care and protection towards orphans and HIV infected children of the state. 6 It will act and supplement for providing additional resources and complementary modalities to the existing centrally sponsored schemes. Uttar Pradesh govt has approved a proposal to include 17 Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the Scheduled Class (SC) list. 6The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed confidence that a prototype vaccine for Ebola may be 100% effective in protecting against the deadly virus.

6The vaccine was initially developed in Canada by public health authorities before being taken over by pharmaceutical giant Merck.

6Earlier in a major experimental human clinical trial of this vaccine conducted on nearly 6,000 people in Guinea in 2015 was found to successfully.
