BRIEFLY TELL US HOW HEIDELBERG NIGERIA STARTED BUSINESS?Heidelberg Nigeria Limited (HNL) began operations in Nigeria in November 1998 as a subsidiary of the well-known and respected Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. Prior to that, Heidelberg has been represented in Nigeria since the 1950’s, through an agent - R.T Briscoe PLC, as such ensuring professional advice, Service & Spare Parts for the entire Printing and Graphics Industry for over one and half century.

THE YEAR 2019 IS GRADUALLY COMING TO AN END; CAN YOU REVIEW THE 2019 BUSINESS YEAR IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE AND ITS IMPACT ON YOUR BUSINESS? In the year 2019, business in terms of performance experienced a slight upward movement in the 1st quarter due to activities that have to do with the 2019 election in the country. However, this improvement was not sustained through 2nd and 3rd quarters. The industry can be scored above average compared to the previous year with the availability of FOREX and a more stable exchange rate. We hope the business environment would improve a lot more.

LOOKING BACK, WHAT WILL YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY?

We would ensure we stock more consumable products and spare parts to boost our revenue base. We also plan to increase our market presence in Northern Nigeria and explore cheaper avenues to reach our numerous customers outside Lagos.

WHAT IS THE MAJOR ATTRACTION FOR EXHIBITING AT PROPAK WEST AFRICA? As a major stakeholder in the industry, we are exhibiting for market presence and to reinforce our market leadership in the Mono-cartons (light packaging) and some aspect of flexible packaging in the West Africa sub-region.

THERE ARE OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS IN THE INDUSTRY, WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES UNIQUE?We are the only equipment supplier committed to being a total solutions provider offering all aspects of packaging solutions to the industry in Nigeria. We offer a complete range of Heidelberg Solutions from Prepress to Press and then Postpress (computer to plate systems, offset sheetfed printing machines, postpress equipment for commercial and packaging printers, after sales support (parts & repairs) and consumables (i.e. plates, inks & press room chemicals), a concept which we have continually sustained in the industry.

BRIEFLY LET US KNOW WHAT AFTER-SALES SERVICES YOU HAVE IN PLACE FOR WOULD-BE INVESTORS IN ANY PART OF NIGERIA? We have a large stock of spare parts to ensure that our customers experience less down time in their production. This is also with our consumables, (top quality inks and chemistry) that enable our customers to produce high quality print. Our team of engineers is also ready to render repair and preventive maintenance services to our customers and would be customers in the West Africa sub region.

WHAT ARE THE BUSINESS CHALLENGES IN AN ENVIRONMENT AS NIGERIA, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?Just like every other business in Nigeria, our business had its fair share of the difficult

business environment in Nigeria. We had challenges in areas of sourcing FOREX at CBN’s official rate for our imports, difficult and energy sapping importation logistics/policies coupled with the traffic logjams on all the roads leading to Apapa and Tin can Island ports resulting in very high cost of transporting containers from the ports. Low patronage from our customers due to low capacity utilization in our industry, unfavourable government policies such as multiple taxation by all the tiers of government, cost of generating power due to inadequate supply from the government approved power companies, exorbitant operational costs resulting from the high exchange rate since most if not all materials required to operate businesses are imported which are not investment friendly are, to mention but a few, challenges that we had to contend with. However, in the midst of all these, we were able to lift our head above the waters by been creative and constantly

“WE ARE THE ONLY EQUIPMENT SUPPLIER COMMITTED TO BEING A TOTAL SOLUTIONS PROVIDER”

With more than one and a half century in consistently meeting the needs of the print and graphics in Nigeria, Heidelberg Nigeria Limited (HNL) has seen and experienced it all. Offering a complete line of solutions to the industry, PROPAK West Africa DAILY sought to know how the respected German subsidiary of world renowned Heidelberg Druckmaschinen AG keeps pushing the frontiers of quality service in the industry. Managing Director of Heidelberg Nigeria Limited – Godwin Ogilo shares this with PROPAK West Africa DAILY. Excerpt below:

We are exhibiting for market

presence and to reinforce our

market leadership in the Mono-cartons

(light packaging) and some aspect of Flexible packaging in the West Africa

sub-region

finding new ways and approaches to address these challenges. As the saying goes, “tough times don’t last but tough people do”. We are waxing stronger and repositioning ourselves to serve our customers better.

AS ONE OF THE TOP STAKEHOLDERS IN THIS INDUSTRY, WHERE DO YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY IS MOVING TOWARDS, PARTICULARLY IN YOUR AREA OF OPERATION? The Nigeria Printing Industry is experiencing growth in Digital Printing, Mono carton packaging printing and Label printing. This is due to the gradual growth of locally made products that ordinarily would have been imported in the past.

ARE YOU DIVERSIFYING INTO THE LINE OF BUSINESS YOU JUST MENTIONED OR ANY OTHER LINES OF BUSINESS ? We are already in these businesses and also working on other areas beyond the areas

we presently cover in the packaging printing industry.

WHAT AREA DO YOU THINK THE GOVERNMENT CAN ASSIST IN HELPING BUSINESS GROW IN YOUR SECTOR? The Printing Industry needs to be given attention just like any other sector of our economy. There is need for policies that will encourage printing of any kind to be done locally. The Printing Industries would like to see new initiatives being introduced by the Government to assist companies to restructure and adopt new technologies and business models to improve performance and overall competitiveness. The government should ensure that all government ministries and agencies print all their printed matters locally (in Nigeria) and place heavy sanctions on defaulters. It will not be out of place for government to set up Printing Industry Intervention Funds that could easily be accessed by printers to invest in new technologies and re-tool existing businesses.

BRIEFLY LET US KNOW THE PLANS YOU HAVE FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS IN THE COMING 2020 BUSINESS YEAR?In the 2020 Business Year, which is also the year for the biggest print exhibition in the world (drupa 2020), we are looking forward to increasing our product offerings to the market. We are also reinforcing and repositioning our customer support team to offer unbeatable services to our customers nationwide. We are equally opening up new business frontiers/opportunities to our customers and prospective investors to key into in the New Year. In addition , we are working with some banks both locally and internationally on various financing schemes for our customers because there is no customer that can raise cash for new investment especially with the current exchange rate without support from banks

or other financial institutions.

COMING BACK TO THE INDUSTRY, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO STAKEHOLDERS – MAJORLY INVESTORS – IN ENSURING PROFITABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY OF THEIR BUSINESSES?For profitability and sustainability of new printing set up, the investor needs to get adequate information on the area of the industry he intends to play. The investor must be educated in the choice of equipment and also understand the market in order to be competitive and effective in the industry.

HOW WILL YOU BE SUPPORTING THE INDUSTRY IN THE COMING YEAR? We have always been there for the industry and this will only get better in the New Year. We will continue to commit both human and material resources to support the industry by ways of skills and capacity building through educational seminars and workshops, diplomacy, and conflicts resolutions. We will continue to support the printing journals publishers and organizers of Printing/packaging exhibitions.

FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THAT WILL LIKE TO SET UP BUSINESS IN THIS COUNTRY?Business opportunities in the country are enormous and for any would be investor planning to set up a business in Nigeria, he must be prepared. Doing business in Nigeria is characterized by both advantages and disadvantages which should not be overlooked. However, as long as the business fills a need in the country and the strategies adopted are right, success is assured. Printing and Packaging like any other businesses can only thrive through a sound business plan and know – how.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME SIR

BRIEFLY TELL US HOW EXACT SOLUTIONS STARTED BUSINESS?We started business actively in 2009 though the dream was registered as a company in 2003. There was six years in between – study and work - till September 2009 when I returned home from South Africa starting with representation of wide format printer manufacturer – MUTOH: a Japanese brand which pioneered eco-solvent printing technology. Over 65 years old in the business with evolution from drafting to larger format. In 2010, we added new products – Koenig and Bauer (KBA); we also partnered with other printing equipment manufacturers. Our target was to be a one stop-shop for the printing industry.

We aimed to offer prepress, press and post press equipment. Today we have reached that level. In prepress – we partner with SCREEN (world leading manufacturers of CTP engines; they manufacturer for other manufacturers). Also, in prepress, we partner with Glunz and Jensen (Danish manufacturers of plates processors); and in Press, Koenig and Bauer Rapida Presses.

We arrived with KBA when they had only one active press in the country. Today, KBA has become the leading brand for brand new offset presses in Nigeria. In finishing, we are offering the full spectrum starting

with cutting solution – German product called Perfecta. In stitching we are offering Hohner (world largest manufacturer of stitching heads – being suppliers to many other manufactures of stitching systems). We also partner with Kolbus – formerly leading manufacturers of book binding equipment but today, they are focused on luxury packaging market. We partner also with Meccanotecnica (Italian manufacturers of world leading brand – Aster sewing machine).

Our top offering to the market is the efficient support to these products. We have trained technicians for each and every solution within the country. We also cover the market of West Africa for most of the brands we represent.

THE YEAR 2019 IS GRADUALLY COMING TO AN END; CAN YOU REVIEW 2019 BUSINESS YEAR IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE AND ITS IMPACT ON YOUR BUSINESS?2019 - we are still optimistic as to what it will bring. In 2019, we are holding on to existing installations while looking on for future business. We are excited about future business. We are optimistic.

LOOKING BACK, WHAT WILL YOU HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY OVER THE YEARS?Differently, no. But we could have done better. We have high expectations of ourselves as a company. We basically continue to finetune our efforts with the hope to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.

WHAT IS THE MAJOR ATTRACTION FOR EXHIBITING AT PROPAK WEST AFRICA? It is to be part of what will hopefully become a strong exhibition for our industry for West Africa. We have this patriotic feeling – a sense of obligation to continue to be at PROPAK West Africa. We are hopeful that the organisers would complement this with campaigns that will make stakeholders to visit PROPAK West Africa in large numbers.

THERE ARE OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS IN THE INDUSTRY, WHAT MAKES YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES UNIQUE?

Our product is unique in many ways especially in versatility. We are equally positioned with products for the commercial as well as packaging printing markets. Also security printing markets and even printers for publishers. We are also focused on building capacity for services. We view investment to service as what we owe to the industry. Best technology can be reduced to low productivity without matching services.

BRIEFLY LET US KNOW WHAT AFTER-SALES SERVICES YOU HAVE IN PLACE FOR WOULD-BE INVESTORS IN ANY PART OF NIGERIA?We have technicians, engineers trained at the manufacturers’ factories for every equipment that we represent. We acquire the competence to support our customers even before the installation of the machines. Our team is made up of highly motivated and self-driven individuals. Over a very short period, we have obtained the competence to completely install brand new projects of multi-colour Koenig and Bauer presses with zero support from the factory.

WHAT ARE THE BUSINESS CHALLENGES IN AN ENVIRONMENT AS NIGERIA, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?They are what other businesses are facing as well like infrastructure, finance, and the dearth of skills in the industry. In

‘WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT FUTURE BUSINESS’

Evidence abounds that times are tough especially in Nigrian graphics clime, but one major stakeholder in the printing industry who’s optimistic about the future is Ifeanyi Ugwu, the Managing Director of Exact Solutions Limited - authorised partner to world leading manufacturers of print equipment in Nigeria. Presiding over an engineering company that specialises in sales and support of printing machinery, PROPAK West Africa DAILY caught up with him to find out amongst others; what major challenges players face and what the future of print business holds? Below is excerpt of our conversation:

Over a very short period,we

infrastructure, there is really not much we can do. The little we could do is to intimate our partner with the situation especially the aspect of power. So, we have designs which take into cognizance the quality of power supply in the country. On finance, it is majorly a problem beyond our scope. It is a government policy. In this area also, we are doing our best to support directly. We are giving them access to financing from Europe. On dearth of skills, it is an area which bothers me so much. While we can do our best in empowering our engineers and technicians, the bulk of our challenge is the quality of apprenticeship and lack of regulation in the industry. Like; how does one qualify to become a folding machine operator? But we see a ray of light at the end of the tunnel with the new CIPPON (Chartered Institute of Professional Printers of Nigeria) and we are hopeful that CIPPON will be a platform to help our industry in reaching the right skill level. We are willing to partner with CIPPON in this regard.

AS ONE OF THE TOP STAKEHOLDERS IN THIS INDUSTRY, WHERE DO YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY IS MOVING TOWARDS PARTICULARLY IN YOUR AREA OF OPERATION?The industry is growing though not as fast as it should but surely growing. We’re beginning to see quality driven competition. We are hopeful that there will be more and more investments in technologies by industry players. We see growth in every aspect. Fortunately for Africa, the effect of digital era is not very significant with very low literacy levels. Our rural schools will still use traditional books for a number of years. For now, we are sure that books will still be needed here as much as packaging

is growing.

ARE YOU DIVERSIFYING INTO THE LINE OF BUSINESS YOU JUST MENTIONED OR ANY OTHER LINES OF BUSINESS? In terms of product offering, we have at the moment reached a good standard. We have in-house products from the world’s leading manufacturers covering most of the spectrum of printing. Our focus for now is supporting our customers to reach their highest level of efficiency possible.

WHAT AREA DO YOU THINK THE GOVERNMENT CAN ASSIST IN HELPING BUSINESSES GROW IN YOUR SECTOR? Government policies drive the economy. We are looking forward to government interventions in lowering borrowing rates, with policies that will make Nigerian manufacturers compete favourably with manufacturers from everywhere else. Policies that will make us compete favourably with products coming from the Asian countries. Policies that encourage peaceful co-existence of Nigerians everywhere in the country. BRIEFLY LET US KNOW THE PLANS YOU HAVE FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS IN THE COMING 2020 BUSINESS YEAR?Our major plan is to draw more closer with our customers. We anticipate their needs and preempt solutions even before such needs become emergencies. Generally, to serve them better.COMING BACK TO THE INDUSTRY, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO STAKEHOLDERS – MAJORLY INVESTORS – IN ENSURING PROFITABILITY AND SUSTENABILITY

OF THEIR BUSINESSES?The industry is very diverse. To the major players, our top print manufacturers, I will encourage them to embrace and invest in technology even more. To the greater population of businesses in the bottom side of the pyramid, I will like to advise them against the current suicide mission that is killing the industry, that is – competition on price. I’m hopeful also that the new CIPPON will help in this area. To save many businesses that are toiling day and night but going home with nothing. My advice is to stop the price-war, and realize that if we standardize prizing systems and ensure a living wage to us – the market will not shrink. The market will still be the same volume and we will still ensure that consumers pay the right price. Today we are doing endless bonanza for consumers, and one wonders when it will end.

HOW WILL YOU BE SUPPORTING THE INDUSTRY IN THE COMING YEAR?We are completely available to support the printing industry in Nigeria. We have a standard obligation to our customers and would-be customers. We give a life-time support to our customers. If we are called upon by industry organisations, were are available to share our know how and other resources.

FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THAT WILL LIKE TO SET UP BUSINESS IN THIS COUNTRY?I will like to assure the person that he is in a right place despite what the social media say. Nigeria still remains the country with the best opportunities for investors.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME SIR.

OVERCOME THEM? Like any other country, Nigeria has its challenges, the first and the foremost would be the power supply and transportation infrastructure, however we are optimistic that these challenges will be resolved soon for better. We see a lot of potentials in the Nigerian market. These days, the client is well versed with new developments in the industry.

AS ONE OF THE TOP STAKEHOLDERS IN THIS INDUSTRY, WHERE DO YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY IS MOVING TOWARDS PARTICULARLY IN YOUR AREA OF OPERATION? We think the market and the industry is moving very rapidly towards digital. All the major offset players are now trying to get digitalized. I am sure printing is here to stay. The scope will be expanded because several printing areas are still being scratched, not fully exploited yet. We also receive a lot of market data’s showing that printing actually in the A4 and A3 segment has increased. Also, digital packaging is promising for the near future. We have the Accurio Label machines which can print labels directly for the industries. Also, these days, people look for personalized packaging which is only an option available with Direct Imaging.

ARE YOU DIVERSIFYING INTO THE LINE OF BUSINESS YOU JUST MENTIONED OR ANY OTHER LINES OF BUSINESS – WHY? We are very much into printing, however for sure we are adding products and services to complement our existing products. With Skysat you can get a one-stop Solution to your printing needs from a home printer to the large commercial presses; also form the smallest single function machine to the outdoor large format signage machines. All our brands complement each other.

WHAT AREA DO YOU THINK THE GOVERNMENT CAN ASSIST IN HELPING BUSINESS GROW IN YOUR

SECTOR? The major part would be done by creating a conducive environment, by providing the basics, like proper power and transport infrastructure. Also, we are working with quite a few State Governments to empower the youth to be entrepreneurs, by setting us print shops with minimum investment.

BRIEFLY LET US KNOW THE PLANS YOU HAVE FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS IN THE COMING 2020 BUSINESS YEAR? We are looking forward to a more collaborative year 2020 by jointly driving and working towards making their businesses more profitable for them. We will introduce new offerings to realize this goal among others.

COMING BACK TO THE INDUSTRY, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO STAKEHOLDERS – MAJORLY INVESTORS – IN ENSURING PROFITABILITY AND SUSTENABILITY OF THEIR BUSINESSES? This is something we will leave it to discuss with prospective investors one on one, as every individual is different with a different idea to work upon. However, on a general note, there is need to be current. That is, to

be abreast of developments in the industry; the need to upgrade existing infrastructures including staff knowledge and finally, they need to maximize every opportunity.

HOW WILL YOU BE SUPPORTING THE INDUSTRY IN THE COMING YEAR? We have been participating in all the major events to showcase all the latest technologies to this market so that our clients are handy with the latest developments in our industry. We will contribute to constructive discussions / initiatives for the growth of the industry.

FINALLY, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THAT WILL LIKE TO SET UP BUSINESS IN THIS COUNTRY? Nigeria has remained the destination of choice for investors in West Africa. The opportunities are immense. Same goes for the challenges as well, however the people are very accommodating and like to try new things.

God Bless Nigeria, God bless all the Nigerians.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME SIR.
