The Daily Journal is pleased to kick off 2020 with our new magazine, Home Trends. Upcoming issues will feature what’s new in interiors, furnishings and architecture. You can also hear from local businesses that can help make your remodel a reality.

This month, we are discussing wood and wood-like flooring with local flooring experts. Several options are available, and each has its pros and cons.(Page 8).

We are also talking to Franklin-based interior designer Dale Hughes about current trends in home decor (Page 13).

If you’re like me, you have a wish list of various home projects (cat-proof blinds, updated living room furniture, a medicine cabinet for the bath-room, a prettier front door with a window and repairing the cracked driveway and front porch).

I began last year with a new wood floor for my Greenwood home, ridding myself of 15-year-old carpet. The wide, composite wood planks, which imitate the look of hackberry, were professionally installed in one week. It was a rather long week of dust, noise, disarray and having a very nice stranger coming in and out, but I couldn’t be happier with the results.

It got me thinking about our homes and what they mean to us.

A home is the most expensive thing most of us will ever buy and, hopefully, an investment for old age. A home is a shelter, and as comedian George Carlin famously said, it’s a place to keep your stuff.

But it’s also your safe space, where you sleep, eat, relax and spend time with your family. In short, it’s where you live your life. So, of course, you want it to be as well-maintained, attractive and stylish as possible.

I hope this magazine helps you do that. Be sure to check your Daily Journal every month for Home Trends.

AAmid the year-end lists and holiday gift-guides comes the annual Pantone Color of the Year announcement.

In recent years, the Color Institute has selected shades based on their uplifting and “life-affirming” qualities. Last year’s nature-inspired Living Coral was chosen for its “energizing and nourishing” elements. The previous year, Ultra Violet was recom-mended for “what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world be-yond our own.”

But in a global environment concerned with impeachment hearings, homelessness and climate change, can the New Jersey-based Pantone offer reassurance in what looks to be a contentious election year?

Pantone thinks so. Classic Blue was announced as the Color of the Year for 2020. (If you are one of Pantone’s 2.2 million Instagram followers, you may not be surprised, given the ocean and sky teasers that were posted to the account prior to the an-nouncement.)

In a news release, the new color, which is darker than aquamarine and lighter than navy, is described as “depend-able” and “non-aggressive.”

From a practical standpoint,

the color forecast means you’ll be seeing this blueberry blue everywhere in 2020. Pantone’s announcement is the ultimate influencer as it will dictate blue trends in home decor, fashion, beauty — even food — in 2020.

“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Imbued with a deep resonance, Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”

“Everybody’s comfortable with blue,” added Pantone Vice President Laurie Press-man in an interview with the The Associated Press. “We know it. We like it.”

Well, not everyone.“I like blue, and classic blue

is certainly an attractive color,” said Los Angeles designer Justina Blakeney. “But it’s kind of like having scrambled eggs for breakfast. I’m not excited, stimulated or inspired.”

Some designers viewed the

color choice as a response to this year’s presidential election. “The Classic Blue represents confidence and calm in the midst of a stormy year ahead with the election and political, economic, and environmental turmoil in the world at large,” said Angie Myung, co-founder of Poketo. “The color also represents staying true to who we are.”

Erica Islas, interior designer for Lamps Plus, thinks the timeless color is a return to basics.

“This shade of blue reminds me of the color of the sky at a certain late hour and the still ocean, both of which are refreshing and serene,” she said. “It tends to work extremely well in all areas of the home including kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, kid spaces, bedrooms, offices — you can’t go wrong with it. The color is easy to work with in interiors and pairs well with a variety of colors, especially white, gray, taupe, yellow and greens. Designers have been using this color for decades so while we already know it’s a timeless color, it’s refreshing to see the color take the center stage. We’re going to be using it for many years to come.”

Adds Los Angeles interior designer Linda Hayslett: “This

blue is great because if used as a solid color, it can add some punch in a modern space. It can also make a sofa stand out or be a strong pop on a wall with paint or tile for a contemporary look. But it can also be used traditionally in looks such as for ticking in fabrics to get a Hamptons vibe or French Country feel. Classic blue is everywhere, even in chinoiserie and toile. I would even use it for some cool wainscoting.”

For the first time, Pantone has teamed up with partners Tealeaves, Firmenich and Au-dio UX, among others, to offer a multi-sensory experience. Now, consumers can taste, hear and smell the Color of the Year courtesy of bespoke tea, perfume and sounds that “harmonize the color, aroma, and taste of Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue.”

“The Pantone Color of the Year highlights the relation-ship between trends in color and what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time, a color that reflects what individuals feel they need that color can hope to answer,” added Pressman.

“As we all head into a new era, we wanted to challenge ourselves to find inspiration from new sources.”

HWOOD WORKS find convenience and ease with hard flooring STORY BY JENN WILLHITE | PHOTO FROM ADOBE STOCK

Hardwood flooring is enjoying a newfound popularity, but today’s options offer more convenience and ease than the products of the past.

According to Christopher Burton, owner and vice president of Burton’s Flooring Cen-ter in Franklin, hardwood and luxury vinyl tile, or LVT, are the trend when it comes to flooring.

Aside from ease of installation, upkeep and versatility, hard flooring is taking center stage as an affordable alternative since the rising cost of polymers is contributing to a dramatic increase in the cost of carpeting and soft-flooring options, Burton said.

“People still put carpet in their bedrooms or put hardwood throughout the house and then just do rugs,” Burton said. “In the long run, it saves them money, and replacement time for carpet versus hardwood is dramat-ically different, too. You are going to put hardwood down once, and carpet you will

replace at least twice.”Hardwood is susceptible to chips and

wear, especially in high-traffic areas, and does not respond well to water damage, which can result in an irreversible condi-tion known as cupping, where the boards can swell, peak on the side and get shallow in the middle.

When it comes to choosing the right hard flooring for your home, start with the ba-sics, recommends Chris Campbell, flooring specialist with Floors to Go in Greenwood. If you are thinking about opting for real wood, start by considering your home’s foundation.

Real wood cannot be installed in homes that rest on a concrete slab, Campbell said. The solid ¾-inch wood planks have to be nailed down and cannot be affixed to con-crete. An engineered hardwood would be a better option.

“Engineered hardwood is simply layers of

wood that have been crisscrossed and glued together,” he said. As with other flooring options, engineered hardwoods are offered in countless styles, colors and textures.

“It seems like the trend with us is the hand-scraped, distressed look. It is probably the most popular look,” Campbell said. “People like the idea of stressed, easi-er-to-hide-scratches type of flooring.”

And when it comes to upkeep, most every hardwood alternative is easily cleaned with a “spritz and wipe,” Burton said.

While you are window-shopping, know that most flooring has to be special ordered, he said.

“Just about every place special orders anymore,” he said. “No one stocks anything unless you are going to a clearance ware-house. It has to do with finances, because margins on products aren’t what they used to be, especially with the rising cost of production.”

While perusing flooring choices, it is best to keep your lifestyle in mind. Couples and fam-ilies with small children or large pets may find that an LVT or engineered hardwood would be a better fit for their home, due to the ease of installation and upkeep, Campbell said.

A key selling point for most wood alter-natives, such as the “look of hardwood” products, is the warranty. “The waterproof warranty is huge to anyone who has gone through the nightmare of having a wood or carpeted floor that has had water damage,” Campbell said. “Compared to real wood, it is very resistant to scratching, too.”

Although natural, solid wood products can be sanded and refinished several times, engineered hardwoods can take a bit more of a beating. However, even with waterproof flooring, there are marked differences, Burton cautioned.

“It will take a water hit better than a natural product will,” he said. “A lot of high-end waterproof products can be taken up, dried out and put back together. With the low-end products, once you put them together, taking them apart can be difficult.”

When considering your options, look at flooring as you would any other major pur-chase for your home. Just because something looks good doesn’t mean it will last, Burton said.

“It is just like if you were to buy a piece of furniture,” he said. “It looks great until you use it and it falls apart. If you are looking at something high-end and durable, you are going to pay for it.”

In the past, laminate was a go-to for floor-ing, but not so much anymore, Campbell said. Laminate is a composite material that has a lot of paper and sawdust material involved in its manufacturing, he said. Therefore, upkeep and cleaning can be a bit tricky as laminate doesn’t like soap and water due to the risk of swelling, chipping and general material deterioration that can occur.

When choosing the right flooring option, also consider how much you want to invest in the home.

“Weigh how long you are going to stay in the residence,” Burton said. “Many people are transient these days; three to five years and they are up and gone to the next property. Don’t overspend on a property you are not going to stay in.”

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN ...

Every home has a different look and style and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Some homes are airy and sparse with neutral colors and cool, minimalist designs. Other homes may be richly appointed and comfy, with overstuffed furniture, jewel tones and mementos of the owner’s world travels.

Neither interior design is the “correct” one. A home should reflect the owner’s personal style, taste and be a comfortable haven.

“For 2020, the theme is anything goes and individuality is ex-tremely important to your design. Your own home should reflect your own personality and should tell your own story,” said interior designer Dale Hughes.

So while it’s fun to look at the latest trends, before you incorpo-rate it into your home design, make sure you are comfortable with it and that it fits in without your overall vision for your home.

Hughes offered some of what he thinks is coming for 2020:
