By SUN REPORTERWHAT is the Ask Afrika Kasi Star Brand Survey?

The survey focuses on brands and products kasi consumers use faithfully and regularly.

A total of 7 671 consumers were inter-viewed, and the survey represents the views of 13 224 000 consumers living in Mzansi.

Face-to-face interviews were done with households. To make sure every-thing was correct an external company, BDO and Dr Neethling were asked to check all the results.

The survey focused on loyal consump-tion of the average kasi household.

Kasi Star Brands are used by township consumers. They define a common expe-rience, often on a daily basis to which Mzansi township consumers are com-mitted.

This year’s survey compares brand us-age across 162 categories and, as a result, 30 Kasi Star Brands were identified.

They include brands and products you are most likely to find in a Mzansi kasi household.

Ask Afrika helps brands understand kasi lifestyle and how consumers buy brands and products across different

product categories. The report identifies gaps and oppor-

tunities in the kasi market, helps with media consumption trends and under-standing of consumer shopping behav-iour.

The research results help marketers understand loyalty drivers pertinent to a specific category. It enables them to customise brand messaging according-ly, but it can enhance a brand’s ability to grow in the township market by re-specting the different demographic, shopping, buying, media consumption, digital and mobile trends.) By SAMMY MORETSIWHEN Capitec entered the Mzansi banking marke, it turned it around in terms of delivery.

Capitec not only got the previously unbanked into the system, it also in-spired most South Africans to consider moving their accounts to the bank be-cause it seemed so friendly.

Bongumusa Mokoena from Kagiso in Mogale City said the bank helped him with a loan when he was in serious need.

Said Bongumusa: “I switched to Ca-pitec with immediate effect.

“What happened was that my old bank, which I’d been with for years, made a fuss when all I needed was a simple R5 000 from them.

“Someone suggested I go to Capitec. They approved my loan within minutes without giving me stress and I decided there and then to get an account with them.”

Bongumusa’s story is one of many that give a positive impression of the bank, which is one of the new brands making waves in many Mzansi kasis. This according to the latest Ask Afri-ka’s Kasi Star Brands Survey.

Insisted Bongani: “I love this bank be-cause it’s friendly and reasonable when it comes to bank charges.

“Look, you can’t do business as usual when your clients are suffering because other banks will snatch them from you.

“Capitec performs the checks that must be done but in the end ensures you walk away happy.”

This was confirmed by findings in the latest South African Customer Satisfac-tion Index for Banking 2018.

Capitec once again maintained the best customer satisfaction score across all brands for the sixth consecutive year.

Capitec was followed by FNB, also in a leader position, and Nedbank and Af-rican Bank are on a par with the indus-try average for last year.

Absa and Standard Bank follow in a benchmark category that places them below the industry average.

The key takeaways:) Capitec continues to perform excep-tionally well in terms of overall custom-er satisfaction. Its promise of easy and affordable banking is backed by its abil-ity to deliver in terms of processes, peo-ple and systems.

By THABO MONAMAA fridge is a complex ma-chine.

It is also the hardest working home appliance that is operational around the clock to keep your food fresh.

Due to rigorous use and wear and tear, a fridge may develop all sorts of prob-lems: cooling, defrosting, faulty wiring, a broken drain plate, sparking from the socket, door closing and drain blockage which may require a repair or service.

SunShopper takes a look at some of the brands avail-able on the market.

Keeping products in a fridge ensures up to 30% better preservation of your groceries.

What more does a Defy refrigerator offer?

Motsidisi Nkosi, deputy principal at Ikaneng Pri-mary School in Diepkloof,

Soweto, said she has been using a Defy refrigerator for the past few years and has never experienced any problems.

“The fridge I am using is only two years old.

“I was using a different brand before until I started having problems.

“I have four different De-fy appliances – a stove, a washing machine, a micro-wave oven and a fridge, which was the last item I bought,” she said.

“I once experienced a problem with my washing machine, but I still prefer the same brand.

“This is because when you call the company or supplier when you need them to fix their products, they do not waste time whether you are still pay-ing for it or not.

“I like that. They attend to customers’ needs and there is good follow-up.”

Choose the best brand of appliance

By SAMMY MORETSIFOR KIMI Myeni from Alexandra town-ship, north of Jozi, Defy Stoves are the best on the market.

“This stove was bought by my parents 15 years ago and guess what? All the plates and the oven still work 100%,” Kimi said.

Her stove still looks new and Kimi said taking good care of it means it takes good care back.

“Defy is a quality product, so if you look after their products, they’ll take good care of you.”

Kimi is not only a good cook, but is also look-ing forward to starting her own catering busi-ness.

She said other stoves only had two plates and are unreliable.

“With a Defy, you can place your four pots on all at once and don’t have to worry about moving them around or waiting for others to finish cooking.

“Any chef will tell you how being able to cook many pots at one time saves you time,” she said.

The SunTeam arrived at her place as she had just finished baking her own birthday cake. We found it hard to believe that the multi-coloured cake was homemade. It looked and tasted divine.

“What I can say is Defy stoves are strong and reliable. When you’re looking for peace of mind in the

kitchen, this is the brand to go for,” Kimi said. When buying a stove, which is the engine of

your kitchen, ask the following questions:What type of home cook are you?“If, like me, you also spend time on cooking channels, getting some tips from top chefs, then you need to have a quality stove which will do the trick for your cooking.”

Kimi said one must be realistic about the fea-tures you need in an oven or range.

“Are you a frozen pizza type of cook? Do you love baking pastries, or do you stick with the stove top? Those questions should be answered before deciding on which stove to buy,” she said.

What type of appliance can your kitchen ac-commodate? Do you have a built-in wall oven and separate cook top, or do you only have space for a range of pieces?

“Your stove should easily be incorporated in-to your kitchen design.”

What’s your budget?“Defy stoves don’t come cheap, I must say. But this is the brand to go for if you don’t want to keep buying stoves,” said Kimi.

By THABO MONAMAWE prepare breakfast every day to ensure we have enough energy for the day.

And Melrose cheese spread is one of many dairy products kasi people add to their breakfast, as it’s afforda-ble and tasty.

Most kasi people say they enjoy it with bread but have never used it as an ingredient in a recipe.

Livhuwani Mulaudzi said: “It’s one of the oldest products I remember. I was introduced to it by my parents.

“It’s easy to use. I just spread it on my slice of bread.

“I like that it’s smooth and easy to apply. My kids also enjoy it.”

Livhuwani said she’d never heard of anyone using the cheese in a reci-pe.

She said: “Mostly we enjoy it with bread, as it’s easy to apply.”

Brain Ncube, the manager at the Media24 restaurant, also said he learnt about the brand at a tender age.

“Most of my family members like

it, so we always buy it.” Anna Maleka said Melrose cheese

was a favourite with taxi drivers.“I’ve sold food for years here at the

taxi rank, and most drivers ask for it when they buy bread,” she said.

“It’s popular among Mzansi fami-lies and they al have it in their homes.”

This products has the following in-gredients: cheese (cow’s milk, salt, calcium chloride, selected cheese cul-tures, non-animal rennet), water and butter, among other things. Melrose cheese spread is a firm favourite in Mzansi

KASI PEOPLE LOVE CHEESE

By SAMMY MORETSIALWAYS sanitary pads are loved by many in the kasi because they are acces-sible and softer.

We spoke to Hazel Nyandeni, who was picking up packs of Always pads at her near-est retailer in Lenasia and she told us all about them.

“Ever since I started getting my period more than 10 years ago, I chose this brand because it is like a trusted friend.”

Hazel said women need pads to continue living normal lives during their period, which is rather a challenging time.

“Imagine not being sure if there is a leak or something not right with the pad you are using? You keep checking yourself and you are not really free as you go about your busi-ness.

“But with Always, I found peace. You won’t even know it is that time of the month,” she said.

She said another problem with other brands was that they scratch, didn’t fit com-fortablyor left you with a rash.

“I don’t have to scratch myself of feel un-comfortable. The pads really give me peace of mind,” she said.

“I know they may not be the cheapest, but they get the job done very well.”

Hazel is not part of the 60% of women who are said to be wearing the wrong size pad.

Always prides itself on protection and comfort for women during this tough time.

“We know that having a sanitary pad that fits properly provides you with the period protection you need.

“The ‘one size fits all’ thinking doesn’t work when choosing your feminine hygiene products. Everyone is a unique size and has a unique menstrual flow.

“A fit based on your shape and flow offers you the best protection and comfort. We want to help you find your best pad with Al-ways My Fit,” the brand said.

Get the perfect fit ... Always!

By SAMMY MORETSIIF YOU want to know more about detergents, the best place to go is a laundry.

And since we’re looking at Mzansi’s most loved brands in the Kasi Star Brands survey, we decided to visit Auntie’s Laundry for the best answers.

The laundry, based in Protea Glen extension 12, Sow-eto, is owned by Shirley Letwaba.

It was founded in September 2017 and is now in full swing.

We asked Shirley about Sunlight detergents and how she feels about them.

“The washing powder is really good. It helps make my customers’ clothes look and smell great,” she said.

She said the powder comes in different varieties.According to Shirley, Sunlight is different from oth-

er detergent brands because it has a two-in-one wash-ing powder and fabric softener that thoroughly cleans clothes.

“The two in-one feature makes my job easier. I save a lot of money because I don’t have to buy fabric soften-er separately.

“And my customers only have good things to say about their clothes.”

At her business, Shirley works with one presser, four washing machines (two front-loaders and two top-load-ers) and a 20kg sensor dryer.

“You can have all the right equipment but if you don’t use the right washing detergents, you’ll have prob-lems.

“Because of Sunlight, I love ironing because of the fresh smell coming from the clothes.”

Shirley said she now depends on her laundry busi-ness for an income.

“It’s a full-time job for me. I have to sort the washing according to colours, so that I don’t stain my custom-ers’ clothes. This helps me gain more customers,”

Shirley said her business is quickly gaining momen-tum, as more and more people are busy and don’t have time to wash and iron their own clothes.

“Remember, there’s also load shedding, which inter-feres with people’s schedules.

“So my business is a problem solver for a lot of people and this is why I want it to develop it,” she said.

“The business is growing and I have three people who work for me in the laundry.”

By THABO MONAMASTARTING your period is certainly not the coolest experience at first.

But with the right gear, you might forget that it’s even happening.

This monthly gift requires finding the perfect pad that works for you. And women these days are spoilt for choice.

Sherly Mokhofu from Soweto is one of the women who tried newcomer Ava Se-crets sanitary pads in the Kasi Star Brands survey.

“I’ve used different sanitary pads in the past few years.

“Ava Secrets are affordable but one can’t

use them for more than 30 minutes,” she said.

“”It seems they’re only good for those who don’t experience heavy menstrual bleeding. I think the other reason they’are cheap is because they are new.

“Like most brands, they also come in dif-ferent sizes,” Sherly added.

Andiswa Ngenyane, who took part in the survey, said: “I don’t know much about this new product but I’ like to try it out to see if it’s comfortable.

“The packaging looks good but I’d like to find out if it’s as good and comfortable as it looks.”

Ava Secrets good for light flow

By SAMMY MORETSIBONGANI Shongwe from Joburg is in his late 20s and wants to look fresh and good – like his peers.

In addition to dressing well, his facial appearance is also a top priority.

Bongani is fussy about the type of razors he uses.

“Not all razors get the job done. For me, Gillette razors are the way to go,” said Bongani.

“Shaving isn’t about simply remov-ing hair, it’s an art. We make some lines that define us and you need good trim-ming for that to happen. You only get that with a Gillette razor.”
