Dear Daisy Brook Friends, The school year has gotten off to a great start. We have a new group of students who have moved up from Pathfinder and they are doing very well. We want to give those Pathfinder teachers and parents a “pat on the back” for a job well done in preparing students for 4 th grade. One of my main goals for this school year is to cut down on the number in interruptions that occur during teaching time. When I looked over last year’s calendar the time on task that we lost to interruptions was huge. We want to keep those activities that sup- port our curriculum but delete those that are not directly supportive of our curriculum. Mandates from the State and Federal government have impacted us greatly in the classroom. You can help by only taking students out of school if there is an emer- gency and by making any appointments after school. I know that this is difficult but try your best! Together we can make sure that all available classroom teaching time is used wisely. Conferences are coming up during the week of Sept. 29. Please make every effort to conference with your child’s teacher and form a good working relationship. You will also have the opportunity to hear about the ideas for a new high school. Representa- tives will be on hand to discuss the ideas that have been suggested as well as any that you might have. Make yourself aware and a part of this process that is so vital to our community. As always, if I can be of any help with any questions or situations that come up please be sure to contact me at 924-8242. *Rollercoasters, a support group for children that have ex-perienced a loss of some sort in their life will once again be offered this school year. I will be offering this opportunity to Daisy Brook students beginning in October. The opportu-nity will be offered at Pathfinder (2nd/3rd) graders beginning December. Groups meet one day a week after school for an hour, for eight consecutive weeks. Lessons work well for children that have experienced a divorce, death of a loved one, parental loss of a job or any other significant life event. Call me at 924-7265 for more information. *A large amount of parenting resource material is available for checkout at Pathfinder. Most of the material is based upon the Love and Logic model, please contact me if you’d like to take a look. *Dozens of Fremont elementary students enjoyed another summer camp experience at Camp Henry. Our district re-ceives many scholarships to be used by families that, with-out financial assistance, may not find it possible to send

their child to camp. A rule of thumb for qualifying for these scholarships is if your family qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Although next summer is far away, it is never too early to reserve a spot. Call me to have your child’s name put on the list.

Although Halloween is still a month away, it’s not too early in sharing our costume guidelines as you and your child begin planning for his/her classroom’s Halloween Party. Halloween can be an enjoyable and fun time for children as well as adults, which is why we are requesting your cooperation in assisting your child in choosing an appro-priate costume for his/her Halloween Party. Encourage your child to choose a costume that uses his/her creativ-ity and imagination, as this is what puts the fun into being a “different character” at Halloween. Costumes that por-tray grotesque or deformed characters, promote or refer-ence violence, and/or include the use of weapons of any kind are simply not acceptable for our afternoon school party. We also request your continued cooperation in seeing

that your child’s costume is not worn to school that day. This in-cludes facial make-up, hair color-ing, etc. Your child will have ample time to change into their costume and apply make-up prior to the party start-ing. You are also more than welcome to come and help your child with his/her costume and make-up. Additional information on your child’s classroom party will be shared with you through your child’s classroom teacher as Halloween gets closer. Thank you for your cooperation with the above requests. Please don’t hesitate to call either the Daisy Brook office or your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

Guten Tag from Frau Llewellyn's Classroom!

HALLOWEEN PARTIES / COSTUME GUIDELINES

This is only one of the many greetings the children in Mrs. Llewellyn's 4th grade classroom are learning this year. My class is learning to speak German for the next several months. After this trimester the class will switch from Ger-man to Spanish. I once had the opportunity to travel to Spain and Portugal and found it interesting that they speak many more lan-guages than just their own language. They are fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, English, and French, to name just a few. While traveling in Washington D.C. this summer I found every taxi driver I spoke with could speak from 4-17 dif-ferent languages. Amazing! As I continued to think on this over the summer I thought it would be interesting, fun, and challenging for my students to get an idea of a foreign language. They are the perfect age for this and their ear is primed to learn new languages. So, I contacted the high school foreign language teachers, Frau Near, the German teacher , and Senor Herlein, the Spanish teacher, and asked if we could arrange to have a 3/4 year language student come over, using it as an inde-pendent study, and work with my class on a foreign language. Their response was positive. This first trimester we are learning German and our "teacher" is Abi Haggart. She also happens to be one of my former 4th grade students, so that is even more exciting. Abi has brought her excellence to the classroom in the form of the perfect candidate to work with my class. The chil-dren are excited and it is amazing to hear their ability to pronounce the words given as well as the meaning of the words in both German and English. They are quick learners. Each one has his/her name in German and we have worked on basic greetings both formal and informal. The children have taken this very seriously and write down the words and phrases in their journals and then on flash cards to continue to practice throughout the week. Although the children will not be fluent, it will allow their ear to connect with a foreign language and then as they go into high school they will follow more easily into a foreign language study. I have told you the first two languages we will study, but I am keeping the third one a surprise to them, so you will have to wait until I announce it. If you want to come in and view my class in this adventure, you are most welcome. German class meets on Friday afternoon at 12:55.

· Being at school and being on time is important. If students aren’t here they can’t learn.

“Being on time is important. It is the first step toward learning.” · MEAP testing will occur starting October 14 through October 30. UNLESS ABSOLUTELY

NECESSARY, PLEASE DO NOT SCHEDULE ANY APPOINTMENTS DURING THIS TIME FRAME.

· Due to the MEAP preview and MEAP testing that occurs in October grades will not be re-

corded until at least late October. · Some of the teacher planning time occurs in the morning before school starts. Unless you

have an appointment or an emergency please do not expect teachers to engage in long con-versations regarding your child. This is their time to get ready for the day.

· Traffic flow is a problem at Daisy Brook. Please be patient and follow directions from

school staff in the pick up area in front of the school. You will save yourself grief if you drop your children off at the Darling Street drop off.

· There are many opportunities to be involved in school activities. The Parent Group is al-

ways looking for those who want to help. Please contact them or the office if you are inter-ested.

· We are strongly discouraging unnaturally colored hair this year. This is a place of learning

and any thing that causes distraction will be discouraged.

· No electronic games or electronic equipment such as iPods or personal listening devices will be permitted at school. Any electronic equipment that appears will be taken by the teacher and will be available for pick up by the parent.

· Everyone will participate in recess unless there is a doctor’s request that the student not

participate. Parent requests to keep a student in for a short period of time in special circum-stances will be considered by the classroom teacher.

· We are here to help. Please call me at 924-8242 if there are any problems or concerns. Talk

to your child’s teacher if you are concerned about his/her learning.

PLEASE NOTICE THE THREE BANNERS THAT HANG TO THE RIGHT OF THE FRONT ENTRY DOORS. DAISY BROOK HAS JUST GOTTEN ITS FOURTH “A” AWARD ON THE MICHIGAN REPORT CARD. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF THIS ACCOMPLISHMENT.

This year we will be working with students on their rights and the responsibilities that go with those rights. We have new posters in the hall leading to the cafeteria from the front entrance. Please review these with your child. They are:

1. With every right comes a responsibility.

By taking responsibility we make our school a better place. 2. I have a right to be respected and a responsibility to treat others with respect. 3. I have a right to my own personal space and a responsibility to respect other’s privacy. 4. I have a right to learn and a responsibility to come to class prepared. 5. I have a right to know the rules and a responsibility to follow them. 6. I have a right to be heard and a responsibility to listen to others. 7. I have a right to a safe playground and a responsibility to use the equipment properly. 8. I have a right to a safe school and a responsibility to help keep it safe.

There are also three posters on bullying that you should review with your child. They are located outside my office on the north wall. They are:

· What is bullying? Lying to get you in trouble Threats and name calling Spreading gossip Stealing your belongings

· Remember: Treat others the way you’d like to be treated.

Are you a bully? Do you like to tease or hurt people? Do you always have to be the winner? Do you use force to get your way? Do you get jealous when others succeed?

· If you’re being picked on… How to deal with a bully.

Be assertive, not aggressive Firmly tell the bully to stop Quickly get away from the situation Immediately tell a trusted adult.

Thank you for supporting us in our efforts to develop good citizens. We all look forward to a great school year.

Mrs. Sparks and the Daisy Brook Staff

Parents are encouraged to move, together, with their children.

As a teacher of Physical Education it is my responsibility to teach children about fitness skills. The Daisy Brook Marathon is being used to introduce children to fitness instruction and to teach the importance of regular physical activity in all our lives.

Parents are invited to participate in the Daisy Brook Marathon by moving, on foot, with their child. It could be

as simple as going for pre-dinner or post-dinner walks around the neighborhood as a family. The distance you move together with your child will apply toward completion of the marathon distance (26.2 miles). For each half-mile run/walked the child will receive 1 marathon ticket. To receive tickets parents must write a note stating how they moved WITH their child (did you walk or run), the date and the distance they moved, together. When the child delivers the note to me, I give them tickets and they move closer to successful completion of their marathon—an earn fitness.

There are other ways to enjoy and develop fitness. I also enjoy biking, kayaking, snowshoeing and more. Others may enjoy swimming, playing basketball or tennis. Whatever it is, it is your own choice. Children need to learn that being fit is a choice they get to make. But, to make the choice, they need to be self-responsible for their own activity. You can’t exercise for them and you can’t give them fitness. However, moving with your child can pro-vide motivation when parents display their own willingness to participate.

Children have been told that whatever their current fitness level—it’s “OK”. Next they need to realize that only they can maintain or change their level of fitness. If they choose to not be physically active they are in fact choosing to become less fit, less able to move, weaker, and more likely to suffer through problems with their health later in life. Working toward improved fitness is a health and wellness choice each of us can make, parents included.

Parents can support children’s fitness by presenting choices for vigorous activities. There are many fitness-enhancing activities for families to do together. This link offers some great suggestions for how your family can get moving, and enjoy fitness, together. Go to: http://www.parents.com/family-life/fitness/family-fitness/

Get Yourself Moving—for the health of it! The choice is yours.

Being at school and being on time is the first step to being successful. Good attendance and punctuality are both necessary work habits that future employers look for when hiring. The Horace Mann Company from Muskegon is providing more incentives for Fremont Elementary students to have good attendance. Two lucky students who have missed 3 days or less during the school year will have the chance to win a Huffy bicy-cle. Any student who misses 3 days of school during the school year will have their name entered into a drawing one time. Students who miss two days of school will have their name entered into the drawing two times and any student who misses one day or less will have their name entered into the drawing three times. The name of one boy and one girl will be drawn at an assembly at the end of the school year. With this new program everybody wins. Some might win a new bike but everybody wins by being in school and hav-ing the opportunity to learn. Thanks to the Horace Mann Company and Stacy Jordan who represents them in this area for making this opportunity available for our students. This program also reminds all of us that good attendance is a life long employability skill that will serve us well into the future.

CAMPBELL’S LABELS FOR EDUCATION:

Daisy Brook continues to collect Campbell’s Labels. The Campbell’s Labels for Education program is a great way for Daisy Brook’s Student Council to get FREE educational materials and equipment for Daisy Brook students to use. Over the past few years, an assortment of new playground equipment has been acquired. This equipment is able to be checked-out from our Playground Shed, staffed by members of the Daisy Brook Student Council, and used during recess times. The equipment chosen by the Student Coun-cil has been very popular with our students. Here’s how you can help us again this year! Please save the labels from any of the hundreds of varieties of Campbell products and send them to school with your child. Please refer to the list of common products eligible for redemption within this newsletter. You may even want to post this page somewhere in your kitchen for easy reference.

Thank you in advance for your support again this year!!

We’re Starting a Collection -

Daisy Brook also collects BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION and BILL’S SHOP N SAVE receipts.

Both of these programs also provide direct financial support to Daisy Brook for additional educa-

tional materials and equipment benefiting students. Simply send them into school with your child.

Thank you for your consideration in supporting these programs as well.

into cash, and provide additional support for the Elementary Parent Group and the variety of

activities and programs they sponsor for students.
