Dalgetystudentsparticipatedinanabundanceofeventsandshowcases,payingtributetothisyear’scelebrationofthe‘AussieShed’.AllstudentsexhibitedtheirtalentsandskillsinHandwriting,(penningsomeofJohnWilliamson’slyricsofhiswell-knownsong,‘TheShed’),Poetry&Art,wheretheirworkscolourfullyadornedthewallsofthePavillion-someeventurnedtheirhandtocooking,cakedecoratingandvegetablegrowing!

National‘TheBigVeggieCrunch’DayDalgetystudentsjoinedinthefunon1MarchforNational‘BigVeggieCrunchDay’,wheresimultaneouslyacrossthenation,wecrunchedonapieceoffruitorveggietogetherwitharecord47,920studentsacross292schools.Our‘HealthySnack’(aspartoftheLiveLifeWellatSchoolprogram’sCrunch&Sipinitiative)hasbecomeamorningritualandhasbeenenjoyedbystudents,providingthemwiththatlittlebitofextra‘fuel’forthemorningLiteracysession.

A Message from the Front of the Classroom Whatawhirlwindstarttotheyear…hardtobelieveit’sWeek7alreadyandyetwehave certainly covered some mileage in that time. Firstly, heartfelt thanks tostudents,familiesandfriendswhohavegivenElyaandIthewarmestofwelcomes.Beingadvisedofmynewpositioninthelastweekofschoolin2017camewithgreatelation,asDalgetyPublicSchoolholdsveryfondmemoriesforme.Ispent3excitingyearsatDPS(2008–2010workingunderMargHayes),whichwillbetreasuredforavery long time. It was with great pleasurewhen Elya Bateman (who has been anemployeeofJindabyneCentralSchoolforthepast10years),acceptedmyinvitationto join theDPS teamas our second teacher for3daysaweek. Elya comeswith awealth of experience andwith her warm and caring attitude and unique teachingstyle, we look forward to an inspirational year ahead filled with opportunity,adventure and a whole lot of learning thrown in. ‘Clean-UpAustraliaDay’CampaignArmedwithgarbagebags,studentseagerlysetoutfortheannualclean-updayonFri2March.Startingattheschool,wedidaquickcleanup(verylittleduetotheschoolbeingspotlessanyway)andthenmovedintoandaroundtown,scouringforbitsnpiecesofrubbish.Welefthappyandfulfilled,andourtownspotless-somethingtobereallyproudof.

OurentryintotheNoveltyEventattheDalgetyShowsawauthor,AaronBlabey’smischievousPugcalled‘Pig’,cometolife.Studentsworkedtirelesslytocreatethe‘life-like’replicaofourbeloved‘Pig’.Withthisyear’sNoveltyEventthemebeing‘Pigs’,wethoughtitonlyfittingthatwecreatetheuniquesculpturemadefromsomeoldpillows,plentyofnewspaperandatonneofglue.Thepapiermachereplicadidn’twinBestinShowbutcertainly(inourminds)wonthePeople’sChoice.‘Pig’beingthepig-headedpugthatheis,whocontinuouslystrivestobethebestversionofhimself,hasbeenresoundinglyacceptedtostarin(well,‘Pig’thinkshewill)theregionswell-contestedLakeLightSculpturebeingheldoverEaster.Besuretogetdowntothelaketo‘keepaneyeonhim!’

‘Strive to be the Best Version of Yourself’ Awards ThisnewlyintroducedawardforthestudentsofDPS,alignswithourClassExpectationsof‘Respect,ResponsibilityandPersonalBest’,wherestudentsareencouragedtogivetheirPersonalBestinallaspectsofschoollife.EachweekthisawardispresentedatAssemblyinrecognitionofstudentswhoaren’tnecessarily‘thebestinthebusiness’butmoreover,studentswhoactivelystrivefortheirownpersonalbesteachandeveryday.Whetherbeingaresponsibleclassmateintheclassroom,playingrespectfullyintheplayground,consistentlyfollowinginstructionwithoutfussorjustgettingonwiththejob–studentswillberewardedwiththishighlysought-afteraward.Togetherwithreceivinganoriginal‘pug-endorsed’bookmark,recipientswillbeentitledtochooseaspecialbooktotakehomeandcherishasakeepsake.
