DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

Comedy is perhaps the theatre’s greatest gift to world culture. Certainly the comic point of view didn’t come from the theatre, either exclusively or even primarily. Northwest Coast Indians hold that Raven created the world, but it was not an alto-gether rational universe he created. He is also the trickster who messes with the best laid plans of mice and men. Coyote in the American Southwest and Monkey King in East Asia are very similar figures - the gods behind all that goes wrong in our lives. A sense of the absurd is clearly the conjoined twin of Consciousness and our choice seems to be either to ascribe divine intention to the absurd or to laugh at it. In the West the Theatre found part of its Raison d’être in the comic point of view and especially in the comedy of 16th century Italy, explored and developed the structures of comedy that underlie all that we experience of comedy today. The Italian street theatre that grew into the Commedia Dell’Arte passed through Shakespeare and Ben Jonson and others, but found its greatest wellspring in the theatre of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, AKA Moliere. To Shakespeare, comedy is a point of view, poetic and romantic – a way to see the world and understand it better, es-pecially love. But while comedy is still that promontory from which Moliere views the life around us, and while the subject matter is still inevitably love or at least love as a force around which all of the players swirl in some way, it is also about the laugh. The most amazing of impulses – the laugh. Why do we laugh? What makes us laugh? How does one cause a laugh, create a laugh, release a laugh? Mo-liere built machines peopled with the characters born in the Italian Comedies and emerged the master engineer of the comic moment. The bit, the take, the routine, the stand-up comic act, they’re all there in Moliere’s plays. If he didn’t invent them, he certainly mastered them and passed them on to us.

This play was written in 1656 but its comic structures are with us still.

As the father, Albert, and his son’s tutor, Metaphraste, tussle over who gets to talk, shades of Abbott and Costello, Lucy and Ricky, Ralph and Alice Cramden play in our minds. A 300-year separation and the same comedy plays in front of us today on Comedy Central as operates in Moliere’s plays. Lovers’ Quarrels or le Depit Amoureux was Moliere’s second verse play and the most produced in his lifetime. His comic invention will develop sharper barbs in later years and lacer-ate the grandees of his time in the masterpieces whereby we more familiarly know Moliere; Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, The Imaginary Invalid, but here is a gentler target – the mistakes made in the fog of love. We are also gifted with this glittering translation by Richard Wilbur. A formidable poet himself, one of the country’s greatest poets of the latter third of the twenti-eth century and the former Poet Laureate of the United States, Wilbur has given the English-speaking world its most magnificent translations of Moliere’s verse plays and in the last 15 years brought forward several new translations, this piece being one, to join his masterful renditions of Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, School for Wives and The Learned Ladies of 40 years before. Finally, we hope, more than any-thing else, that we make you laugh. It is sufficient to laugh. The laugh is restorative, cleansing, communal – a release and a solace. If we leave the theatre with a smile, for that moment, do we need anything more? Enjoy.

Bill Watson

New Dancemakers: In The FleshDecember 9-12, 2010 Studio 254, Mitchell Hall

ARTISTIC D IRECTOR ’S STATEMENT

Welcome to our festival of creativity!

New Dancemakers: In The Flesh is about how these young choreographers have approached making their dances: they got it done by showing up and doing the work in person – no texting, no facebooking, no skype. Our process as choreographers and dancers is about real bodies in motion and

the physical expression of emotions and ideas in real time. They are creating work one-on-one, one minute at a time to the best of their abilities while also living within the constraints of this busy, interrupted, mediated life. It’s like they are writing their first novels while the phone and doorbell are ringing!

In my story, the years surrounding my 20’s looked nothing like what these young choreographers have to contend with in terms of issues of identity and gender. Through so much of our “instant” communication, the world seems a much more diverse and yet polarized place. But even as uncertainty seems to surround us, it is comforting to see so many of our students caring about connecting personally--we have a record 26 choreographers presenting work. And, because of your past enthusiastic response to our New Dancemakers shows, we added 4 shows to our schedule. We are all here in this space celebrating our connection “In the Flesh” and I am deeply honored to be part of this event with you!

Best wishesLuc Vanier
