Elon University Fall Convocation with The Rt. Hon. David Cameron: p.m.
As Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (2010-16), David Cameron
led a government that transformed the UK economy. Under his leadership, the deficit was reduced by more than two-thirds, 1 million businesses were set-up, a record number of jobs were created and Britain became the fastest-growing major advanced economy in the world. He also introduced a National Living Wage, won passage of gay rights legislation, championed environmental issues and fought to protect the publicly funded National Health Service. He resigned in July 2016 after unsuccessfully campaigning to keep the UK in the European Union. Cameron now serves as chairman of patrons at the National Citizen’s Service and as president of Alzheimer’s Research UK. He offers lessons in leadership at an extraordinary and turbulent time in global affairs. Admission: Ticket information to be announced.

Baird Lecture Series | Voices of Discovery Science Speaker SeriesA leading oncologist and researcher, Siddhartha Mukherjee has received wide acclaim as an author for his examinations of cancer and the human gene. His first book, “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer,” received a Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and offered insights into the various forms of cancer that plague humanity. A Rhodes scholar who was honored in 2011 as one of the “100 Most Influential People,” Mukherjee is a graduate of Stanford University, the University of Oxford and Harvard Medical School. She encourages readers to consider issues of the first-year experience, transitions between home and campus, identity, diversity and inter-cultural competency and Cuban-American relations. Voices of Discovery Science Speaker SeriesJeffrey Piascik, senior research engineer and lead systems integrator for the “Reinvent the Toilet” program at RTI in Research Triangle Park, works in partnership with other engineers and social scientists to develop and test a safe, effective and affordable toilet that sanitizes and recycles human waste without inputs of electricity, water or other infrastructure. Off the grid, sustainable toilets can provide great benefits in terms of reducing disease in poor or isolated areas. Toilet prototypes are currently in field testing in several locations around the world.

Richard Dowling is the first pianist to perform the complete cycle of Scott Joplin’s 53 rags, marches, waltzes and cakewalks in concert. Sand MandalaSacred Space, Numen Lumen Pavilion, ongoing viewing
Tibetan Buddhist monks will construct a sand mandala for healing and peace during a period of three days. Viewers are encouraged to frequently stop by and see its progress. An opening ceremony will begin the process at a.m. Wednesday, and a closing ceremony will begin at p.m. Friday in which the mandala is deconstructed and the sand is shared with the community and the earth.
