IF NATURE ABHORS THE STRAIGHTline, then so must interior designer Danielle DePerro.Although she knows when to employ vertical lines forheight and drama, this 10,500-square-foot penthousecondominium in Fort Lauderdale’s Ritz-Carlton liter-ally flows on the inspiration of a wave. The curvilinearsweeps of the 25-story building’s exterior design setthe theme — with DePerro embracing these aquaticlines as her own.

But there was work to be done before the designer, interior architect Thomas Benedict and builder JoeDimauro could take the plunge. “When the ownersshowed me the residence they were thinking ofpurchasing, I looked around and told them, ‘to attainwhat you want, this will all have to go and we’ll needto start from scratch,’” DePerro says. Having workedwith the owners on a previous home, the designer’sfrankness didn’t dissuade them. But there was one caveat:this four-bedroom weekend home had to be ready inseven months. “We worked mostly from Danielle’sdesigns,” Benedict says. Removing all interior walls,

A chenille sofafrom Kravet, Swaim lounge chairs from Judith Norman and an onyx and wenge-woodcocktail table from Stone International are all grounded by a Surya area rug.

LEFT: In the dining room, interior designer Danielle DePerro eliminated heavy moldings, woodwork and casings; concentrating instead on vertical window lines and an eye-appealing ceiling structure. Bentley Churchill chairs in a S. Harris silk diamond patternfrom Jeffrey Michaels surround the DePerro-designed table. An AXO Murano glass lightfixture from Capitol Lighting casts a warm glow over the setting.

ceilings and floors, “we took thetwo-story space and the 11,000square feet of 360-degree wrap-around balcony expanse down tothe raw concrete,” he says. “Allthat remained was a thematicallycongruent floating staircase.”

DePerro says that the owners, whose primary residence is fivemiles away, saw their penthouseretreat as both a private andpublic domain: open and spaciousfor comfortable entertaining, andmore private areas for family timewith their children. Keeping thepalette neutrally warm againstthe cool blue shades of sky andsea, the living room is awash indrama with the existing staircasetrim painted to resemble theBrazilian walnut flooring. DePerrothen added a serpentine soffit tomatch the cascade of the curved-glass balustrades. Like bubbles inthe ocean, or from a glass of coldchampagne, Eurofase’s crystalchandelier sparkles upward, whilecrimson-leather lounge chairsand a glowing onyx and wenge-wood cocktail table pump colorinto a conversational groupinganchored by a gold chenille sofa.

RIGHT: Confronted with two structural pillarsin the middle of the living room, DePerrocovered them in wenge wood and circledthem with fine wines suspended on beveledstarfire glass shelves, creating a cooledtreasure house for connoisseurs withcustom woodwork by NYE Portfolio.

“I often get inspiration from architectural strength,” DePerro says. “And itwas The Ritz-Carlton’s oceanic lines — and the owners’ trust — that

gave me a latitude to find the perfect balance of structure and design.”AS SEEN IN

To the left of the living room, silk diamonds appear on the dining room chairs thatsurround a DePerro-designed table. Though the home has little more than 8-to-9-footceilings, here the designer didn’t shy away from drawing the attention upward to asparkling light fixture in a recessed ceiling with hidden LED lights.

But it is the sprawling wine room that welcomes visitors from the entry. In soft camelleather, the four-piece, double-crescent sectional sofa provides views of the intimatepiano alcove and a wine collection with over 350 perfectly chilled bottles. Working

Neocla ssical Details And An Eclectic Mix

ABOVE: For sheer luxury, try walking on glass, such as in the master bath, whereVenetian glass planks by Hirsch Glass Corporation cover the floor. Sparklingmosaic tiles look like art as they blanket walls and columns, and flank a Keucodouble-sided mirror. A honey onyx countertop from Casale Marble Imports fin-ishes wenge-wood cabinetry to complete the elegant look of the space.

Textures abound in the master bedroom — from rockygold wall covering from F. Schumacher that strikes abeachy note, to a leather-framed bed by Stone Internationalwith a headboard insert in Pindler & Pindler’s chamoisleather, two benches from Century Furniture covered instriped Kravet silk and a richly patterned Surya area rug.

around massive structural columns, DePerro clad them insilver-traced wenge wood and created four entertainmentareas — the wine room, a pair of honey onyx bar tables andchairs, a setting of four lounge chairs and a tasting table, and aspace for the self-playing baby grand. Inverted wine gobletpendants allow connoisseurs to check for color and legs.

Following the residence’s u-shaped configuration, themore intimate family room faces a tranquil eastern horizon. In joyous yellow, leaf and cherry, the family can watch TV,play billiards or sip something from the zebrawood-cladwhite wine cooler set in the custom-designed bar. The 14-foot,camel-leather sofa, and leather and stainless steel barstoolsprovide plenty of seating. Here, the designer played withhorizontal lines and stripes, from a wool Nourison area rugto the DePerro-designed cocktail table’s stainless steelstruts. As a respite, contemporary curves are served up in thelounge chairs covered in a playful fabric from Lee Jofa.

whose clear panels, when the light is turned on, immediately become opaque. When not in use,the wraparound vista is an unimpeded 180 degrees of the Intracoastal Waterway.

And what did the owners think of their seven-month miracle? DePerro laughs. “In the laststages of completion, we always ask the owners to resist coming until the day of the presentation,”she says. “I think, in this case, the look on their faces and their words were saying the very samething: stunning and overwhelming.” Just the right reaction to a residence that makes a big wave.

With perfect symmetry, the ceilings of the master bedroom are just as interesting as itsfurnishings. Employing coffers, floating ceiling panels, trays and tightly suspended fixtures, theroom gives a feeling of height. Dark flooring against a lighter ceiling provides the same sleightof hand. DePerro’s greatest challenge took place in the adjacent master bath, where a restrictedspace gave way to innovative fun. Now, the owners share a vanity island with matching squaresinks divided by a double-sided mirror. The shower sits between glass-fronted commode spaces,
