Danielle’s StoryHi, my name is Danielle Jim, soon to be Schuler. I am a 25 year old Native American woman. I come from a little place called Wide Ruins, AZ, on the reservation. I have 4 siblings, all brothers, whom I love dearly.

At the end of 2008, when I was eighteen, I moved to Flagstaff. That was when I caught my first case. I was fond of partying when I came to a new town to meet new people. That’s when it all started. I met my future fiancé and we fell deeply in love. It was a bond no one could break.

Unfortunately, drugs and alcohol were the strongest bonds in our relationship. Then we started fading from each other, the pain got worse inside of me and our relationship became very destructive. Even the people we called friends turned on us.

When my future fiance started getting locked up I found myself alone and scared but acted like I was not. I took more and more drugs every day and acted as though every day was a new day and a new beginning. In the end I realized I was lying to myself and going in circles. I knew at that point I was lost. The worst thing that I had done was put my daughter, my baby girl, through all this pain and hurt that I was going through. I was being very selfish and dishonest with myself. I felt desperate. But somehow I found myself in front of a door bell and a glass door that were waiting for me to do something. I was scared that this place would be good for me and that I was not ready to handle the truth and realize that this was an opportunity to change my life.

But I gave it a chance and my daughter and I went in with just a duffle bag full of clothes; open to whatever was offered to us. I stayed for 3 or 4 months at Hope Cottage. I met a lot of amazing mothers and kids. The staff was wonderful and helpful. That’s when I found my strength and an inner peace that gave me the ability to start a different life.

I even started using a different vocabulary. I was proud to have this chance of being reborn again. Hope Cottage sheltered me and my daughter in a safe environment and gave us a place that we called home for a while. The classes we are provided have made many improvements to my lifestyle now. The energy that some of the girls have is so amazing and helped me realize I was a new lady.

Right now in 2016 my life is more than I could ask for. I have been with my fiancé for seven years now. We have 5 kids and we live in a house just around the corner. We both have jobs and continue to be sober with the help of my family and his, but most of all each other.

I thank Hope Cottage for helping me turn my life around.

Danielle Jim
