History
The island got its name from Denmark’s king Kristian II, more
known as “Kristian the Tyrant”. For a short period of time in the
14th century he was king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. When
he fought against Gustav Vasa he sieged the island and this inci-
dent is what gave it its name, “The Island of Denmark”. Sweden won
the battle and this was the last time Sweden fought for indepen-
dance. “The Island of Sweden” is actually located only a few hund-
red yards away and between these two islands is where the battle
took place. The Island of Sweden is today a nature reserve due to
the unique birds that breed here. There is a great view of this beau-
tiful island from The Island of Denmark.
During the last centuries The Island of Denmark has been inhabi-
ted and rented out to the highest society of Stockholm for
recreation and croquet tournaments.
