Now that the District Rally is over...our turn! April 5th
Friends Ride for Fun! Ride Safely! Ride with Knowledge!
On Saturday, Feb. 28th, 3 chapter members participated in a picture scavenger hunt at First Coast Honda in St. Augustine. Danny McIlrath, Annette Thompson and Mark Lasoff were among 12 riders who rode thru Old St Augustine taking pictures of statues, and other landmarks spread out thru the town. Such items we had to find were: the gate leading to the city from the north ( more about that later), a bottle of Rip Van Winkle scotch from Molly Bee's, motorcycle parking signs from parking lot of the fort, the lion at foot of bridge, the tail of alligator at alligator farm, the statue at Fountain of Youth, the silver horse @ Ripley's Believe it or not, the chain gang, and stockades from the jail, a picture with a pirate, and a happy sign in Vilano Beach. We we came back first and thought we had all 12...But, because somebody on the team decided SHE wanted a picture of another gate in the city, we actually came in 2nd place, but that was not that bad. The 1st place prize was 1/2 of the registration from all participants (which would have been $25.00).We figure the 3 of us would have blown that for lunch. But the dealership felt so sorry for us with that certain person crying and throwing fits about how the direction about the gate was too confusing, that we were given a nice batter charger, which we have donated to our ralley.
Bottom line....Women should be seen and not heard Article submitted by Mark Lasoff and Danny McIlarth
Just thought I’d clarify: The clue said if you were coming from the North, (which First Coast Honda is North of the only city gates in St. Augustine) I can see how she would select this site as the answer to the clue. However the correct answer was the sign north of First Coast Honda. With the two Spaniards welcoming you to the city of St. Augustine.
The Old City Gates are a striking site toward the north end of St. George Street. The Old City Gates were at one time the only entrance into St. Augustine. The two ancient columns made of stone were built in 1808 as a line of defense for the city. Visiting the Oldest City in the United States would not be complete without taking a moment to see the Old City Gates. They are a symbol of the turbulent times faced by the original American colonists and a truly memorable landmark. After, walk through to enter St. George Street, a historic pedestrian mall where galleries, restaurants, shops and popular St. Augustine attractions greet travelers from all walks of life.
So as you can see some may say that women should be seen and not heard....It doesn’t change the fact that WE are RIGHT! LOL

Chapter Directors: Danny and Kathy McIlrath
Hello,
We just got back from the district rally. It was a lot of fun and we had a number of chapter members a=end. I would like to thank all those who helped work the registra>on table. We had a three hour work shi? and it went by fast. As always you run into a lot of people that you don’t see too o?en which is always enjoyable. The number of vendors was down this year but there s>ll was a lot to see and we picked up a few things. Boots seem to be the hot item this year.
But the most fun was when we could set around at night and just talked as friends. Of course the snacks were enjoyed, especially the tasty and beau>ful cake that Anne=e brought. We solved the world problems and exchange stories. The chapter put on our short sport skit, it didn’t go the way it was planned out but that is what makes for more stories and memories. It was fun to do and we can thank Anne=e and Mike for the >me they put into coming up with the game, planning, and making the props. And we took 3rd place. HURRAY for FL1-‐K.
We were very >red when we got back home but it was worth it and now we need to work on the rally. I would like to thank all those that have helped get things ready for our rally. Hope to see you there.

Through the Eyes of a Newbee! We began with an early ride through the country to get to the rally. The group stopped at The Mason Jar for brunch. On the way we saw turkeys, squirrels, deer, and lots of other kinds of birds.
This was my first rally at the district level and I was impressed. I loved the theme that Bill and Gina selected. I even was in costume while we worked registration the first day. I meet a lot of new friends. I was able to take a couple of classes while I was there and learn some new information. The medic first aide class was very helpful. I received training that I have never had and a refresher or updated my teaching of CPR. Wow they do that different now than 30 years ago. I enjoyed the class because the instructor made it interesting and got us involved in conversation. The skills part went very smoothly because of the excellent preparation prior to preforming them. I guess I’m certified now. Yeah! There were several vendors present some of which I even purchased necessary items for riding with from. I was told that wearing wool socks would keep my feet cooler and warmer riding so I bought a couple pair, we’ll see. I got pink so at least they are cute. LOL.
Well, I guess I’ll have to try again next year to win that goldwing. I just knew it was going to be mine. I was disappointed, I didn’t win anything. Michael won two door prizes. Oh well, can’t win all the time, and there is always next year.
The dinner on Thursday,(Florida Pheasant/chicken) was very good. After dinner the entertainment consisted of the games for the time period. Our chapter entered the sporting contest and we came in third! And I entered costume contest, but didn’t win. We all had a lot of fun. There are a lot of funny people in GWRRA. Very creative ones. So I would say that the rally was a big success mainly because FUN was the objective and there was plenty of that going around.

I would like to get some pictures of everyone riding their bikes. Let me know when and where we can meet and I’ll shoot a couple of pictures of you riding. I’d like to use them in the newsletter like the ones of our CD, Danny McIlrath. Call Annette to set up an appointment: 615-633-1992!

Access to Rider Education Data
GWRRA has implemented the method of providing general Member access to their own Rider Ed data. Each Member now has their own username/password similar to the one used to access Message board. Right now access to the Database is through a link on the Rider Education website, on the left side "My R.E. Information” button. The District is hoping the Home Office will also put a link or note on accessing the link on the main GWRRA website. Members can login and see their own information. This was communicated to the Program Directors, Deputy Directors, Director, and Member Services. The initial message receivers have been performing a beta test of sorts to assist in making the tool more user-friendly. Their feedback has resulted in further enhancements that were added to provide a hover over feature on the acronyms being used – wait for a moment and the acronym is spelled out. Login help is provided, including mailing them their password if they have difficulties using the login assistance. If the Member is an instructor, they can see when their certification expires as well. The database has a new legend that explains the color backgrounds for courses that are current (green), expiring in 90 days (yellow), or expired (red).
If you have questions about your status please contact FL-1K Rider Educator, Bob Finney at [email protected]. If you have a difficult time accessing your database then contact GWRRA.

Chapter Rider Education’s Inspirations Thoughts:Bob Finney
Being Visible
"I never saw the rider" is one of the most common things automobile drivers say after they've struck a motorcyclist, an unfortunate reflection on how easy it is for riders to slip under the radar. Here are tips on how to stay visible while you ride. The first and most obvious way to avoid being hit is to stay out of the blind spots of other vehicles and give yourself enough room to react. Ways to do so include:
• Making sure you can see the drivers of the cars around you; if you can see them (through eye contact or in their mirrors), chances are you're in their line of sight... but never assume anything.
• Creating a safety buffer around you, which means leaving enough distance ahead of you, and giving yourself space to maneuver away from trouble.
• Avoid lingering in the blind spots created by the A-pillars and C-pillars of cars; those are the front 3/4 and rear 3/4 angle views out of the driver seat. Passing can be a dangerous maneuver, so be especially aware when overtaking a car or another rider.
• If you're riding with a group, be sure to leave a safe distance around you, and ride in a staggered formation for maximum visibility.
Black motorcycles look cool, but they tend to visually blend into their surroundings. Riding a more brightly colored bike- whether it's white, yellow, or even red- will increase the odds that you'll register in the peripheral vision of other vehicles.
The rider is a big part of a motorcycle's visual presence, and wearing bright or reflective safety gear is an easy way to stand out. Choose light colored gear, and try to find jackets and pants that are treated with a reflective finish. Some apparel now comes with a reflective finish that's only visible at night, adding an element of style to safety gear. If you don't have reflective gear or want to take a more proactive approach to being seen, buy reflective tape and apply it to anything from your helmet to your saddlebags.Remember those hand signals you learned for bicycle riding? Extending or flexing your arm is an effective way to raise your visual profile in addition to using your turn signals. Just be sure you're able to effectively control your vehicle while doing so, and never take your hands off the handlebars when the turn is underway.
If you're being followed too closely by a car and aren't able to maintain an effective safety cushion around you, there's nothing wrong with lightly tapping your brakes to activate the brake lights. If that doesn't help the tailgater lay off, do your best to safely exit the lane and find a safer spot to ride.
Motorcycles are setup to run their headlights at all times, but if you're not in danger of blinding oncoming traffic, flipping your high beams on will add an extra level of visibility. If you have high-intensity discharge bulbs or are aimed squarely at traffic during nighttime riding, avoid using your high beams unnecessarily. Headlight modulators are electronic components that enable lights to pulse or flicker in intensity, and while they've been known to annoy fellow riders and motorists, they can improve visibility. Modulators are legal in 50 states as long as they comply with certain specifications; this printable page cites the Federal law on headlight modulators.Studies have shown that it's easier to estimate the speed of a vehicle when it has two lights spaced apart, since the perspective shift helps with depth perception. Using or installing running lights not only makes your bike more visible, it helps oncoming traffic estimate your speed, potentially saving you from unsafe left turns. There's a fine line between noise pollution and self-preservation, but if all else fails you might want to make your presence known by blowing your horn. Though loud car stereos or other aural distractions can prevent motorists from noticing the sound of your horn, the split second decision to press the horn button can make the difference between becoming a victim and avoiding an accident.

We will start out by saying, “THANK YOU” to all who attended our 35th Annual Gathering of the wings..... a Royal Feast, FUN, and Renaissance Faire! The weather was great and a FUNtastic time was there to enjoy. It was exciting to have so many New Comers (165) and to be up in our attendance from previous year. In total 1153 folks participated in the FUNtivities...folks from all over the USA and Canda! We hope those that spent their time and money with us in Kissimmee went away feeling it was worth it! Many hours of planning and working on this event by our entire District TEAM was spent to be able to provide all FUN you could possible have. A giant THANK YOU to our team whose dedication, support, and hard work makde the King and Queen look good...THANKS Jim & Rebecca, Nate & Danelle, Howie & Karen, Bill & Cheryl, Dana & Jo, Rick & Pam, Ray & Claudia, Scott & Kathy, Ed & Jeanett, Cliff, Bruce & Mary, Harry & Lynn, Rick & Madalena. We would also like to THANK those who taught seminars. We only heard positive comments about the classes. THANK YOU to all the chapter folks who worked during the rally with the games, security, check points, hospitality room, Poker RUN, Couple of the Year, MEC, RE, MA, and registration areas. THANK YOU to all the chapters who participated in the Talent Show, Costume, Mascot, Banner, Scrapbook, Collage/Diorama, Best Dressed, Chapter Pride, Chapter Challenge, Lighted Bike Show, and the Chapter Renaissance Game contests. THANK YOU to the vendors for being in attendance and for providing a terrific selection of products and services for our members and guests. THANK you to FL1-T, Inverness and the Pink Peddle Pushers for their innovative and FUN routine. Loved the Pink Panther, too!
We truly wish there was more we could say or do to show how much we appreciate your time and efforts in assisting us with the rally. Again THANK YOU for a successful 2014 rally as we look forward to an over the top 2015 rally! The plans are already in the works as we prepare for the 2015 and our “America the Beautiful” themed event. As we progress through this year, be thinking about an element of America that has special meaning to you...It may be patriotic but it doesn’t have to stop there. Think broadly...perhaps the Wild West, Yankee Doodle Dandy, the American Indian, comedy, theater, Rambo-the ideas are endless. We can hardly wait to see what you come up with making 2015 the best year ever! The first of April will find us in Mobile Alabama for the Alabama’s District “Roman the Bay” rally. We know that Robert and Gail along with their team will provide us with a FUN event. We may actually get to ride if the weather is good! If you are free April 3-6 come join us in Mobile. You can find their event information on our website under the FUN link. We so appreciate that all the District Directors within Region A (AL, GA, SC,and MS) attended our rally in Kissimmee. We certainly plan to reciprocate and it would be awesome to have lots of FL folks join us! The more, the merrier...and more FUN! Go ahead and mark your calendars for May 1-3 for SC’s Cartoon Land theme District Rally in Florence. We will be there and you already know we are characters!

Locally, FL1-K Palm Coast will be putting on their St. Augustine Rally and Party on April 5th. FL1-F2 Ocala follows the next weekend on April 12 with their Poker Run. Lots of work goes into planning, preparing for, and delivering a FUN event. Please put these events on your ride calendar. We can not emphasize enough the importance of getting out and riding to support other chapters at their special events. If you want folks to come and have FUN with you at your event, then you MUST go out and support their events. Isn’t our association about the love of motorcycling with the motto of FRIENDS for FUN, SAFETY, and knowledge! Let’s get out and visit with our friends!
This is the time of year many of our northern friends start back to their summer homes. THANK YOU for being here, and have a great summer!
As we wrap up this article we want to say THANK YOU to our outgoing District Couple of the Year, Donnie & Aimee Peters. They represented our District well throughout Region A all year. WELCOME to our incoming District Couple of the Year, Tom and Linda Mitchell. We know they will continue the tradition of having FUN and representing Florida in grand fashion! BTW, for those who witnessed Tom falling off the stage at Closing Ceremonies-we are happy to report that his injuries were minor (bruises with some aches and pains). We are so thankful that he didn’t sustain more serious injuries especially when you consider he fell backward and landed flat on his back from almost a 3’ drop! CONGRATULATION are also in order to FL1-M, Clearwater, for being named the 2013 Chapter of the Year at our rally. THANK you, Senior Directors Tracy and Sharon Dunn, for your leadership and THANK YOU FL1-M for doing an outstanding job over the last year. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that your chapter really knows how to have FUN! Hope to see you out and about soon!

We’ve Been Spooned
March has always been the busiest month of the year with regard to motorcycling and GWRRA in Florida. The month started on March 1st with Jeanette & me checking different Chapter Newsletters for events nearby for us to attend. So, at 10:00AM we met up with FL1-H Daytona Beach at their departing location for a great ride to Yalaha Bakery near Howie-In-The-Hills. We had been there a few years ago, so Assistant Chapter Director Trevor Simpson asked if we would lead the ride since there were no others present familiar with the bakery’s location. After a terrific ride in the country, we arrived to find the parking lot full of cars, motorcycles and bicycles. Although there was a line waiting to order food, we were served very quickly, and took our meals outside where picnic tables were set up and a band was playing for our enjoyment. On March 3rd we attended the FL1-K Palm Coast/St Augustine’s Team Meeting at Hooligan’s at Destination Daytona, where a planning session was in progress to put the finishing touches on their April 5th Rally/Party at First Coast Honda of St Augustine. March 6th found us attending FL1-X Orange Park’s Monthly Gathering where we always receive a warm welcome. We were accompanied to Orange Park by a number of folks from FL1-K. Chapter Director Geno & Kathy Jette had things humming right along. In an effort to support our sister Chapter on Saturday, 8 March, we road with Chapter FL1-K Palm Coast/St Augustine and visited FL1-H Daytona Beach who hosted the Bike Week Breakfast at the Elks Club in Ormond Beach. Chapter K held their Monthly Chapter Gathering on 10 March and it was great to see so many new members present. Fun was had by all. On the 11th I had eye surgery to even out my left eye with the right. After 40 years of wearing glasses though I find myself looking for them a lot, I don’t miss them. With the 35th Annual Florida District Gathering of the Wings fast approaching and having to leave Wednesday morning for Kissimmee, we thought we would ride over to Orange City on Tuesday 18 March and attend a Dairy Queen event sponsored by FL1-G Deltona and find out what this “Order of the Red Spoon” was all about. Jeanette & I thought we would be going to a DQ in Orange city and we might be able to get back home early the night before leaving for the District Rally. We Tail Gunned for the second group of riders and took a really nice ride to an Apopka DQ down near Orlando where we were met by other members of FL1-G. FL2-N members also joined in the fun. I should mention that the current International Couple of the Year, Tommy & Gayle Wilson from Virginia in Region N, were riding in the first group. We all had a rousing time being squired into the “Order of the Red Spoon”. It was really great to see so many members of the Northeast Florida Chapters, which Jeanette & I support, attending the Florida District Convention again this year. We want to thank not only the workers who volunteered at the rally, but to especially thank those members who helped in the Hospitality room. With your help it was relatively easy to keep all of the food and drinks displayed so the members could have plenty of choices. Also, we would like to send out a big “thanks” to all the Chapters who brought in the snacks and goodies this year. We will need to bring in a few more items next year for those that need sugar and glutton free treats. We’re headed out this afternoon for a visitation to “Big” Senior Chapter Director Ed Chesham and Chapter FL1-J in Jacksonville. We’ll see you on the road somewhere. Coming up on 12 April at 9:00am, check out the FL1-F2 Ocala Poker Run thru the horse country. And we hope to see you at the South Carolina District Rally May 1 – 3rd, in Florence, SC. Hope to see you at a GWRRA event in 2014,
Ed & Jeanette Carr, Assistant District Directors
