Deaf culture describes the social beliefs, behaviors, art, literary traditions, history, values and shared institutions of communities that are affected by deafness and which use sign language as the main means of communication.

In this power point we will cover some

of the set backs and advances to teaching

the deaf.

In Deaf culture, the primary language is sign language.

There are over 200 distinct, naturally-occurring sign languages in the world.

Sign Languages also differs on the language of the country.

In America we use a sign language most closely with French.

Tend to be more towards groups than loners.

It is not considered a condition that needs to be fixed.

They tend to have a positive outlook.

They tend to be more blunt and up front, as well as speak their mind more.

Deaf people have many different etiquettes for communicating.

It is important to provide many details when leaving or entering a room.

Deaf people use time and space differently

Showing up early to events is the norm for most deaf people.

Keeping direct eye contact during signing is ok.

Eye contact otherwise is considered rude in the deaf community.

Deaf people use poetry and story telling a lot, as well as humor.

Sports play big role in the Deaf culture.

It is a great way for Deaf people to express themselves

There are schools solely for the Deaf.

Most parents put their children in normal public and private schools.

This is for the experience and the ability to help the children assimilate better into normal society.

The first thing that separates the Deaf from the rest of the world is the ability to communicate.

Signing is a very difficult process and like speaking there is a lot of slang.

Being able to best communicate to your students is key and can be more difficult.

Deaf people like to communicate with other deaf people.

This puts a strain on the other students, who are not deaf.

There is frustration from both the teacher and the student to understand one another.

Sending a Deaf child to a public school can also be difficult because they are not getting the love and discipline they would at home. A teacher in a public school may not have the patience or the ability to relate to a Deaf student and therefore may not be able to teach them to the best of their ability.

Most Deaf students are taught using the oral method.

Teachers read aloud and write everything on the board or give it to the student. This also forces the student to read lips and adapt.

The oral method is how most deaf students are taught in all schools.

This can cause lower test scores and there is no real way of knowing if the students understand the material.

They may understand, but because they are not being spoken to in their own language, it may be hard for them to grasp what is being taught.

Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic

Most Deaf students are visual learners by default, but so are most other people.

Some Deaf students can be auditory, but only if they have partial hearing, which may be difficult to work with. If a teacher is going to work with an auditory Deaf child, they should also use that style along with visual and kinesthetic to make sure they understand.

Mainstreaming is placing a Deaf child into a public school rather than a school just for deaf children.

This is supposed to help ease Deaf children into normal social settings easily.

When mainstreaming, most deaf children don’t get to participate in core education classes

Their day is mostly spent in the resource room where they can get more quality time learning.

This causes the deaf student to lose out on valuable learning and socializing time, which may outcast them anyways.

Located in Massachusetts, the learning center for the deaf went away from the oral method and into an open method, where they use sign language in the classroom as well as speak English. This allowed for the children to be centered and focused

on.

This learning center is the leader in Deaf education in America.

It ranges from early childhood to

high school and also focuses

on special needs.

The Learning Center is a great example of what more states should provide.

Self containing classrooms A classroom with children that are all Deaf or hard of

hearing.

The only issue is that they are isolated from their peers.

This allows for the deaf children to have more time with their basic education as well as electives.

It will also allow them to socialize with other Deaf students, so they are not completely isolated. If they were involved with something after school, they

would get that socialization from other students.
