TEMPERATURE & RELATIVE HUMIDITY
+2oC / 60% RH
26oC
The room air temperature and relative humidity is depending on the water temperature and the building structure of the swimming pool hall.
Normally the swimming pool air temperature is maintained at 2°C over the water temperature for comfort reasons.
The lower the air temperature the lower the evaporation from the pool surface. The higher the relative humidity the lower the evaporation from the pool surface.
TEMPERATURE & RELATIVE HUMIDITY
+2oC / 48% RH
30oC
The maximum absolute water contents in the air is according to VDI 2086 14.3 g/kg. Therefore the relative humidity in this example should not be higher then 48 % rh.
TEMPERATURE & RELATIVE HUMIDITY
-8oC / 50% RH
36oC
A special case are therapy pools where very often a water temperature of 36°C should be maintained.
Here the air temperature should be under the pool temperature because of comfort reasons for the personal.
CALCULATION AFTER VDI 2089
W =e x A x (Pb - Pl)
W = Evaporated water (g/h)
e = Faktor
Pb = Saturated vapour pressure pool water (mbar)
Pl = Partial vapour pressure air (mbar)
6 m
3 m
28°C
30°C / 53% 22,5 mbar
37,8 mbar
A = 6 x 3 = 18 m
Pb = 37,8 mbar
Pl = 22,5 mbar
e = 15 for privat pool
W= 15 x 18 x (37,8 – 22,5) = 4,13 l/h
CALCULATION AFTER VDI 2089
The amount of fresh air which is needed to dehumidify the swimming pool can be calculated as follows:
V = W / (Xi x Xu) x 1.2
V = Air volume (m3/h)
W = Evaporated water (g/h)
Xi = absolute water contents, inside air (g/kg)
Xu = absolute water contents, outside air (g/kg)
In practice this value is set to 9 g/kg in northern Europe.
1.2 = Density of the air (kg/m3)
V = 4130 / (14,3 – 9) x 1.2 = 650 m3/h
It is important that the air volume of the unit is about 3 – 5 times the volume of the swimming pool hall.
PROBLEM SOLUTIONS
1) Dehumidification and ventilation with a heat pump dehumidifier.
Cheap and simple solution but today normally only used in small private or hotel swimming pools because of high temperatures in the pool hall.

2) Dehumidification and ventilation with fresh air.
The first type of pool dehumidification, but today with
heat recovery. (Cross flow heat exchanger and /or a heat pump).
