Welcome to the Mansfield Outdoor Centre! We offer you and your students a full service Overnight and Day-Use Outdoor Education experience within a short drive of the GTA. All of the programs and activities at the Mansfield Outdoor Centre have been developed with the following 5 principles in mind; Safety, Curriculum Linked, Social Development, Connection to Nature and Excitement. With over 300 acres of beautiful Canadian forest and countryside on our property, we have created a program offering to meet the needs of teachers and students in any grade level. Our overnight programs are designed to enhance your school community and the social fabric of the students who attend the program. We are “The School, Outdoors”.

Safety All of our staff have completed a rigorous recruiting, training and background check process. We hire the best adult instructors to provide the safest space for your child to learn in the outdoors. Our staff are First Aid, CPR and AED certified.

Curriculum LinkedOur “All-Inclusive” approach to curriculum linked programs was intentionally developed with the class-room teacher in mind. Upon booking; teachers will receive a Pre and Post -Trip kit with lesson plans, activities and ideas for action within the classroom to ensure their visit to the Mansfield Outdoor Centre provides the most possible learning opportunities. We offer 3 day theme pack programs, or a la carte programs grouped into 6 Categories; S.T.E.M, Historical Simulations, Outdoor Skills, Eco-Games, Leadership, Character and Community Development and Evening Programs.

Social Development When a school visits the Mansfield Outdoor Centre; every student must contribute to the living community which we all share. Our facilities and programs are designed to create a family feeling. Students are encouraged to “Live and Share” together during meal services, cabin times, programs and free time.

Connection to NatureWe like to live outdoors at the Mansfield Outdoor Centre. Each day, your students can expect to spend most of their time outdoors. Our instructors will instill an appreciation and understanding of the natural world that provides us with so many hours of activity, adventure and fellowship into each student.

ExcitementFun is Fun! Mansfield Outdoor Centre offers your students the next level of fun; excitement. Our programs and property are effectively designed to make sure your students are excited and thrilled with the activities they are participating in. Our adventure based approach to programming will make sure their palms are sweaty, their hearts beat faster and they will never forget their Mansfield Outdoor Centre experience.

facilities and lOcatiOnThe Mansfield Outdoor Centre is located in Mulmur Ontario, in Dufferin County. Our central Ontario Location is within 1.5 hours of Torontvo, Peel, York, Halton, Upper Grand, Simcoe and Durham region schools. With over 300 acres of private property, we offer two unique facilities for your Overnight Outdoor Education programs.

The Main LodgeThe Main Lodge facility offers Cabin Style accommodations for up to 110 visitors. With 14 Camper Cabins and 2 Teacher Cabins which are equipped with private washrooms. All of the cabins are heated and insulated to ensure you are comfortable in any season and any weather. The Main Lodge Building and the Student Bath House are less than 40 meters from the camper cabins. The Main Lodge building features a large dining room with capacity for 116 people, a large classroom space with stone fire place, and additional washroom and shower facilities. Outdoor amenities include; Basketball, and Volleyball, Gaga Ball, Soccer Goals, Open playing fields, camp fire circles and sports equipment.

The Field Centre The Field Centre offers Dorm Style accommodations for up to 46 visitors. Teachers will have Private Bedroom and Bathroom facilities within the dorm, and students will be in rooms of 4-6 bunk beds.

The Field Centre is arranged with comfort in mind, so visiting Teachers and Students will have easy indoor access to the large Living and Dining room space. The lower level features a large multi-purpose classroom, rec room, and mud room.

Outdoor Amenities The Mansfield Outdoor Centre staff are happy to program your entire visit from the minute you step off the bus, however; we offer the following amenities for Teacher Led programs and student free time periods; Basketball, Sand Volleyball, Gaga Ball, Soccer Goals, Open playing fields, camp fire circles, sports equipment and nature trails.

FoodDuring your 2 night/3day outdoor education adventure at Mansfield Outdoor Centre, you and your students will be treated to 7 home cooked meals and evening snacks. All of our meals are home made, comforting and exceed the Canada Food Guide recommendations. We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy free, halal, food allergies and most other dietary requirements. Students will often be seen returning to the serving counter for seconds and thirds, for the fuel they need to participate in our exciting programs. Teachers will also enjoy the 24 hour coffee and tea station in the dining rooms. We are a nut free facility*.

The following is a general guideline for a 3 day trip to Mansfield Outdoor Centre. We can accommodate any required changes due to school dismissal times, bus availability, or the needs of the booking teacher.

PrOgram guideScience, TechnOlOgy, engineering, and maTh prOgramS

ForestryStudents will hike and explore our 300 acre mixed forest and conduct a forest survey within a designated forest plat. Students will engage their math skills to measure tree height, tree diameter, forest density, and occurrence of the various tree species’ within the survey area. Students will also conduct various experiments in small groups to determine the flexibility, carbon content, age and potential commercial use for the various woods found in the forest plat.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane…Students will examine and explore things that fly and the physics behind the miracle of flight. This program includes outdoor exploring and identifying various species of birds and their adaptations for flight. Students will also experiment with gliders, trajectory of round objects and measure factors such as wind speed for predicting the outcome of a rocket launch.

Pioneer Wood ShopStudents will be able to select from a variety of pioneer style wood crafts including; toys and games, household items, kitchen tools and more. Each student will use their math skills to measure lines and angles and transfer plans from paper to wood. All of the tools used in this program are hand tools and include; various hand saws, hand powered drills, sanding blocks, clamps, hammers and screw driver.

Small Creature StudyStudents will learn about biodiversity and the energy cycle that is supported by the small creatures inhabiting our forest, meadow, pond, swamp and river eco-systems. Through a combination of outdoor games, collecting and examining live specimens and evaluating the non-living environment; students in all grade levels will develop a deeper understanding of the connections between our everyday actions and their impact on the sensitive environment supported by small creatures.

Weather or NotStudents will examine local and global climate and weather trends, extreme weather phenomena and the energy that humans can harness from the weather. Using professional quality instruments, the students will record information as a local Weather Station, and use the information to predict the weather for the next 12 – 48 hours. Students participating in the Weather or Not program will also participate in weather related games, activities, role plays and drama.

hiSTOrical SimulaTiOnS

SettlersStudents will learn the local history and hardships of European settlers and homesteaders in Central Ontario. Students will then apply basic Map Orienteering skills to participate in a simulation game where they will role play as Farmers, Sawyers and Millers to build their new lives, raise a family and prosper.

Fur TradeStudents learn the adventures and challenges faced but he members of the Hudson Bay Company as they travel the forest as Courieur du Bois and collect animal pelts to trade with local indigenous communities.

ecO gameS

Instincts for SurvivalInstincts for Survival is the Mansfield Outdoor Centre version of a classic predator/prey food pyramid survival game. Students will be transformed into Herbivores, Omnivores, Carnivores and Natural Elements to simulate the forest eco-system. The complexity of the game can be modified to meet the needs of all age groups.

Running Wild GamesRunning Wild Games is a collection of outdoor games that are played in the forest, fields and trails of Mansfield Outdoor Centre. In each game, the students will have an opportunity to explore predator/ prey relationships, animal adaptations, the pressures of habitat loss on animal populations and other human impacts on wildlife.

OuTdOOr SkillS

OrienteeringOur orienteering program is designed to challenge students of all abilities, from beginner map readers to advanced map and compass explorers. Students will identify and utilize the mapping tools; Legend, Scale and Compass Rose and will collect points as they navigate and find their orienteering check points. Mansfield Outdoor Centre has 12 different Orienteering courses to be sure your students are successful in this practical application of map reading skills.

Snow ShoeingStudents will learn the historical application of snow shoes and will set out on a trekking adventure on trails and through the bush of Mansfield Outdoor Centre with classic beavertail shaped show shoes. Proper winter footwear is a requirement for this program.

Watercolour PaintThe water color program combines a walk in the woods, students observation skills and sensory awareness techniques with a practical water colour lesson outside. Students will learn proper water colour techniques, use quality paint and paper materials to create 1-4 pieces of art work inspired by the incredible landscape and wildlife of Mansfield Outdoor Centre.

Woodland SurvivalYour group of students suddenly finds themselves stranded in the woods with minimal resources and the threat of weather and darkness looming. They will quickly learn about the human bodies reaction to stress, how long we can survive without Water, Food and Shelter and the perils of hypothermia. Working in small groups, the students will then begin preparing for the possibility of an extended stay in the woods, building shelters, emergency camp fires, and boiling water.

Cross Country SkiingOur Cross Country Skiing program is our signature winter offering. From thorough instruction for beginners and over 40km of machine groomed trails for skiers of all skill levels, we know your students will have a blast exploring the forest. We provide top quality ski equipment and instruction to make sure each student has a great experience on the trails.

evening and cOmmuniTy BaSed prOgramS

Evening Programs are a great way to build community among your students. Our Mansfield Outdoor Centre evening programs may include; Camp Fires with s’mores, Night Hikes, Large Group Games, Dance Parties, Seasonal Craft Activities, Talent Shows, Drama Performances and more. During a 2 night visit to Mansfield Outdoor Centre, we will provide 1 complimentary evening program of the teachers choice. Additional evening programs can be added for $150 per program.

Eco-ActionEco-Action is a new program offering at Mansfield Outdoor Centre. Teachers will choose from a seasonal selection of local or national environmental issues that are relevant to their students’ curriculum. The program consists of a discussion of these issues and ideas for action in our outdoor classroom. The students will develop an action plan and begin an Eco-Action project that will continue back in their classroom and home life.

leaderShip, characTer, and cOmmuniTy develOpmenT

Co-Operative GamesOur co-operative games program is designed to engage groups of all ages and group sizes to solve problems, communicate, work together and overcome challenges. Our trained instructors will work with teachers to develop a sequence of activities that will challenge the students to achieve their full potential as a group and individuals; at School, at home and in their community.

Teambuilding Challenge CourseOur signature team development program includes low prop activities and participating in a fully facilitated low challenge course sequence including trust falls, rope swings, initiative walls, balance beams and more. Our low challenge course includes 14 initiatives that will require your group to support each other, communicate, problem solve, plan ahead, adapt to change and reflect. All of our facilitators are professionally trained and will work with teachers to achieve specific group goals.
