What is PRGF®?

PRGF® is Plasma Rich in Growth Factors. It is based on obtaining a preparation of proteins from your own blood. These proteins have biological activity, among which are growth factors, to stimulate and speed up tissue regeneration.

How does it work?

With PRGF®, we isolate from your blood the plasma containing proteins that stimulate and speed up the repairing process for tissue regeneration. To carry out this process, it is necessary to draw up a small amount of your blood which is then centrifuged and processed to obtain the proteins essential for regeneration. We then apply these proteins to the area where tissue regeneration is necessary. PRGF® guarantees a noticeable improvement and quicker recovery.

PRGF® – Endoret® technology is the only technique that holds the European (CE) and American (FDA) health certification for:• Skin rejuvenation• Dental implant system• And a number of other

medical specialities

A course of 3 sessions are recommended for facial rejuvenation with personalised follow up always after 1 year (1–3 appointments depending on your age and skin type).

editor’s letter

Dear Darling Reader

The new year has hardly begun and already we’re off to a winning start. The balmy January aside, (fingers crossed) there’s plenty to cheer about. Cover girl Gina has scooped first prize for her Amazonian Collection, our wonderful Wonderland committee impressed the Duchess with their Dorchester charity initiative, Revd Andrew Wakefield has won the coveted Compact Award, and I’m proud to announce (blush) your Darling editor won ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ at the South African Chamber of Commerce UK Business Awards. And with our Cobham & Esher issue turning one, and our Kingston Darling launching this month, the year is starting off with a real bang!

Other champions in this issue include absolute abode’s new design emporium opening in Raynes Park, Spoons’ fabulous new menu, tax relief from Hart Brown and Jason’s roomy basements.

Wishing you all a bright 2014, and may all your finesses go right!

inspiring women

Micky Wolff, Chair of the Wonderland Committee, describes their fundraiser for Children In Crisis:

“Inspired by a desire to create performance opportunities for children and teenagers, and a passion for raising money for children less fortunate than our own, my idea was to put on a 4th children’s charity fashion show. It is a project which has relied upon friends, colleagues and contacts that I and an inspiring group of international working mums have tapped into. We have pulled in favours, begged for prizes and coerced our contacts into joining forces!

The build-up is unbelievably exciting and we are on target to raise in excess of £50K which

will fund all the running costs of a Primary School in Afghanistan under the brilliant leadership of Children In Crisis for 12 months. It’s well worth the hard work. The Duchess of York (Patron of Children In Crisis) has given her full support and our friends from ‘Made In Chelsea’ promise to make this a catwalk show to remember. Our very own band of ‘Minipops’ will take to the stage and Little Nikki will perform her hit song ‘Little Nikki Says’ as the catwalk finale. Other celebrity guest appearances are assured but, most of all, Children In Crisis will benefit.”

Micky lives in Wimbledon with her husband Gary (a professional photographer) and their five children. She runs the Stagecoach Theatre Arts School in Battersea

having trained as a dancer. It’s a busy world, full of chaos, plenty of laughter and enough trips to Serre Chevalier (her favourite holiday destination) to keep them all sane!

This is what some of the other members of the committee had to say:

Rachael Lavelle“I’ve lived in Wimbledon for nearly 10 years as a busy mum of four. Most of my time has been spent bringing up and attending to the whims of my kids (and their teachers)! Too many school appointments, bags, uniform changes and way too much homework to do along the way. Mums, you know the drill! Simultaneously, I’ve kept pretty

busy over the years with several fundraising events, including co-chairing a ball for the NSPCC at the Waldorf, worked voluntarily for Great Ormond Street Hospital and also signed up for a number of sporting challenges which have included jumping out of a plane, the London Marathon, the Maratona in Italy and climbing Kilimanjaro and Mont Blanc. All of these endeavours have helped to keep my sanity and fitness in check and made fundraising part of what makes me tick! Multitasking is definitely a woman's biggest asset and working with the Wonderland committee has brought out the best in all of us. Thanks to everyone who has supported our cause and helped to make this charity fundraising project ‘a success without the stress’!”

Charissa Risley“I am a relative newcomer to Wimbledon, having moved to the area just over two years ago from our previous enclave within the Circle Line. We moved for a garden, larger living area and greater access to outdoor pursuits. My community experience was as a class rep for my sons' school, The Rowans. I was hugely flattered to be asked to join The Wonderland Committee. We are a collection of mums from Wimbledon, Surrey, Chelsea, Clapham and even Moscow.”

Pauline den Hoedt“This project came to me at the right time. My three children are at school and I felt I should do something useful with my spare time. My role is to get Fashion Houses to donate or lend clothes

that the children can wear on the catwalk. I have enjoyed working with a team of inspiring and fun mums. Many friends outside of the committee have referred me to their contacts and, in that way, helped a lot too.”

awards

Gina is a dynamic, local businesswoman (via San Francisco) who owns and manages four award-

winning salons and spas as well as raising three small children. She is a networker par excellence and role model for women everywhere.

Her winning photo was handpickedfrom Gina’s new Amazonian Collectionwhich captures the energy and beautyof feminine power. Her prize is to participate in a photo shoot with Aveda Artistic Team Jo McKay and Bastian Casaretto in Berlin.

As the overall winner of the coveted‘Fashionista Photographic Award’ for Europe, Gina will also be with Aveda backstage at New York Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2014.

“Entrepreneurs are artists,” says Gina, “Creators of opportunity. I live in the space between now and the future. I crave to seek answers to “what if...”. I spent the last two years analysing myself and where I want to focus my time while still enjoying my beautiful children. I’ve seen business coaches, personal coaches, consultants and investors come and go while I remained paralysed by too many business ideas. I know this is a blessing and do my gratitudes daily. I have taken up

meditation to help me focus on finding the next stage of my journey (you can take the girl out of California...).”

Darling asked Gina what is next? “This year we will be creatingcollections based around ethnic beauties and natural breathable skin and hair. As we have seen the economy recover, haircolour has risen sharply to include the whole head and in far richer tones than the brassy dip-dye faded looks of last year. That trend was very driven by the economic downturn and we’ve seen it drop off and return to shiny colour in exciting glossy shades. Wine, milk chocolate and silky vanilla are all on the colour menu as well as the return of the punk blue and lavender from the 80s, only better!

I can’t wait. 2014 is going to be anamazing year for our business. We are expanding our Serenity Spa at GC and launching our upscale mobile hair and beauty services. I am really looking forward to sharing my dreams with my team and honouring our salon guests with an even more beautiful experience.”

school – promo

Woodcote House SchoolThe country prep school close to London

Woodcote House is a family owned prep school for 105 boys set in

thirty acres of gardens, playing fields and woods. Our boys are prepared for Common Entrance and Scholarship exams at thirteen to all the major public schools. Increasingly, we have found that London-based families are choosing Woodcote because it is the antithesis of the pressured London preps. To help these families, we will be launching a bus service from Tibbet’s Corner at the top of the A3 from April 2014. This launch was announced at the Independent Schools Show in Battersea and created a surge of interest from families in SW London.

We are strong believers in letting boys be boys and our grounds allow this to happen. We play sport every day, camp in the woods, fire up the pizza oven and regularly use our low ropes course and shooting range. In other words, all activities happen at school – even homework! This means that when the school bus returns to London in the evening all school work is over for the day.

Being a school of 105 means the average class size is about 10-12 boys. There is no hiding place! Your son will be pushed in all subjects to be the best he can be and we do not believe in extra

tutoring! If he needs support, we provide it as part of the school day.

Woodcote’s graduated approach to boarding has certainly proved popular. Boys can start as day pupils at any time from Year 3 – 7 with no pressure to become a boarder. However, depending on the choice of senior school, boys usually end

up doing some boarding, be it two, three, five or seven nights a week. Exeats from Friday lunchtime to Monday evening happen every third weekend and most other weekends

are ‘Open,’ which means the boarders have the option to go home on Saturday after matches.

Please contact Wendy Edgerley, our Registrar, or [email protected] for more information or to arrange a tour of the school with our Headmaster, Henry Knight.

The Ray Stevens Academy (RSA) is going from strength to strength. From its two local venues at Ricards Lodge School and Blossom House School the academy is introducing the art of judo to children as young as four years old right up to 16.

The new Competition Class on Fridays at Ricards Lodge offers even greater opportunities to compete in national events and win medals. Competition club coach and international fighter Szandra Szogedi chaperones children to the competitions and provides the all-important moral support and coaching tips.

In addition to judo we also offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on Fridays 6.30pm – 7.30pm for 13-year-olds upwards. Junior BJJ is a fast growing sport focusing on ground fighting that is great for self defence and fitness.

As well as judo classes, the RSA runs after school Judo Clubs for Putney High School, Wimbledon High School, The Priory School, Radnor House, Ewell School, Hampton Hill, and the Roehampton Club.

Just A Spoon Full Of Delight!Coombe Lane tearoom has new owner

Experienced chef and entrepreneur Ian Shier, purchased Truckles on the Coombe Lane parade about

two months ago and he has great plans to make it even more irresistible to locals. “It took 18 months from the time we made the first offer on the deli to completion,” says Ian, “but it was well worth the wait.”

Ian decided to go into the café business about ten years ago. He has owned eight different restaurants and six coffee shops which he runs with his partner Una. Rebranding as ‘Spoons’, this delightful coffee shop has had a fresh update on the décor and, importantly, on the menu side will be changing the dishes with a hot daily special and some fresh oriental salads all

homemade. The fresh cakes will still be home baked and Ian plans to introduce a traditional afternoon tea.

“I have a special tea menu planned together with iced teas, coffees and frappuccinos, yogurts and even freshly squeezed orange juice. The staff have been fantastic and very supportive so the transition has been very simple.”

fi nancial – promo

Women often contact misslolly.com asking how to have a better relationship with their money. As with most things, a little financial

knowledge is a dangerous thing. It is therefore important to arm yourself with a good basic knowledge on which you can build over time. This year my aim is to use this article to give you the tools you need to make 2014 the year you get on top of your money.

First things first, you need no debt (ignore mortgage debt that is on a repayment basis) and the right level of savings. If you have debt you need to get honest and organised. Start by making a list of what you owe, who to and what is the interest rate that you are paying.

Next, see if you can switch to a 0% interest rate and, if not, a cheaper interest rate. Then arrange for minimum payments to automatically come out of your bank account each month. This will ensure that you are not incurring any unnecessary charges and/or damaging your credit rating.

Finally, commit to a monthly amount that you WILL pay off your debt each month. Ignore all temptations to sway from your plan – it will be worth it in the end.

Turning to savings, believe it or not, you can have too much cash! This is because cash in the bank rarely beats inflation and, therefore, doesn’t work hard for you. However, you do need a safety net. Ideally you should have between 3-12 months’ worth of outgoings in cash. How much you have depends on how cautious you are, your work benefits, job security and also your personal

situation. For more top tips read misslolly.com.

Next issue I will give top tips on investing and pensions. In the

meantime, get in touch with me with your questions and get ahead by reading the Miss Lolly blog on facebook.

1. How to Make University Costs Manageable LV reported the average student will have £53,330 of debt! Investing each month will help to reduce the debt your child takes on. Ideally, start from birth. If you invested £200 per month per child wisely, you should have enough to cover the whole lot.

2. Save Money On Your Life Cover Life cover prices have drastically reduced thanks to us all living longer. Plus, this January, it became even cheaper for men. If you haven’t reviewed your cover, it’s worth it as your needs might have changed and you might be paying too much.

3. Children Can Have ISAS Too You can put money aside for children using the new Junior ISA. They are a long term savings plan and there are two types. Firstly, the junior cash ISA takes no risks and pays interest on the money you save. However, the returns on a stocks and shares junior ISA depend on the investment. You can pay in £3720 this tax year. The big warning is the ISA belongs to your child and at 18 they can spend it how they want!

4. You Need A Will – NO BUTS!! Ceri Vokes, Wealth Planning partner at Withers LLP explains "If you die without a will, the first thing your heirs might notice is a large inheritance tax bill. Also, living arrangements may no longer be as simple. Your spouse may own the house with your parents or your children, who will take their full share as soon as they turn 18. If you have not appointed guardians for your children, they could end up being looked after by someone you don't believe is suitable. If you and your partner were not married, your partner will be entitled to nothing at all.”

5. Write Your Insurances In Trust! Trusts aren’t just for trust fund babies. Less than 10% of plans are written into trust. This is surprising given the advantages. Usually it’s free

to do and won’t take long. The benefits are that, on death, the money will fall out of your estate and, therefore, no tax is due, plus it will pay out quicker to exactly who you want it to. Speak to an

adviser about which trust is right for you.

Speak to an

adviser about which trust is right for you.

carer – promo

For too long the care sector has been associated with minimum wage and

poorly-trained staff, delivering care in 15-minute chunks.

Here, at Home Instead, part of our ethos nationally is to change the face of caregiving by treating our staff with dignity and respect in exactly the same way we do our clients, recognising the vulnerabilities associated with caring. Looking after frail Doris, dependant on support to get up in the morning, or being the only one that lonely Fred might see all week, is a huge responsibility for anyone. So it’s vitally important to recruit people who really want to make a difference to the lives of their client.

We can teach people how to provide care, but we can’t teach people to care... that comes from within. And that’s where we start – by looking at how big someone’s heart is. We have a wonderful team of people of all ages, experiences and diverseness,

ranging from 21–70 years old and every one of them really wants to make a difference to our clients’ lives. We have nurses, a piano teacher, hospice helpers, charity shop volunteers, a make-up artist, a dinner lady, wives, mothers, grandmothers and we even have a few lovely male caregivers too. Each and every one of them is unique and special with their own lives outside of Home Instead – which we are ever-mindful of. At Home Instead we really care about them, matching them with clients, through their individualism, life experiences and characters. We train them, talk to them, check on how they are getting on, sympathise, empathise and share our hearts with them. We give them time with their clients to build a relation and trust.

We encourage diverseness in our caregivers because each and everyone one of our clients has their very own support needs. Our clients have had amazing lives. We regularly hear the stories they have shared with our

caregivers. We have an oil tycoon, teachers, dancers, a professional football player as well as a former spy who dealt with counter espionage during the Cold War. We never forget that even though they are now less able or rather forgetful, they still are that special wonderful person who has had a full and varied life.

Caregiving is not for everyone and nor should it be. It defi nitely should not be in the unskilled section at the job centre, or only for people who can’t get work anywhere else. It takes a very special type of person, with a very special skill to share their heart, offer trust, support and dedication to those who need us.

Home Instead Wimbledon & Kingston, providing home care services in your area. Our ethos is to ‘change the face of ageing’.

Fancy a bacon baguette or a pear frangipane tart washed down with a Teapig? Or a toasted fruit bread with a salted caramel hot choc on a

wintry morning? It isn’t just the unusually tasty menu that’s putting Spoons on the map (in the little parade of shops on Coombe Lane, West Wimbledon, to be precise) – it’s new owner Ian Shier’s cosy revamp that’s made it the perfect

meeting place over breakfast, lunch or dinner, or even just for a normal cup of tea!

Ian’s new range of cakes includes éclairs, macaroons and egg-nutmeg tarts, and lunch now includes a new range of salads, Asian style, all fresh and homemade. And you can choose your favourite coffee from his new espresso machine to finish it off in style.

There’ll be more tasty treats coming in 2014, with something special to spice up the evenings. Watch this space! Spoons Tearoom, 255 Coombe Lane, SW20 0RHT: 020 8605 2175

The winners of the Compact Awards 2013 were announced at a ceremony held in Westminster towards the end of last year, with over 100 guests attending. These

awards were designed to celebrate and showcase the most outstanding Compact working across England. Compact is the agreed working arrangements between national or local government and the voluntary sector to ensure a fair and level playing field for delivery of services to the residents and communities in an area.

Revd Andrew Wakefield has been involved with Merton Chamber of Commerce since its foundation in 1992 and has been its chair since 1999. In that time he has had two guiding principles.

Firstly, that business support services in Merton should be managed and delivered from Merton and, secondly, that Merton business is part of the wider Merton community and not something separate.

The national Compact Leadership Award acknowledged not only Andrew’s personal role and activity but is testament to partnerships built with Merton Council and MVSC, as well as the dedication and commitment of Merton Chamber staff in implementing these guiding principles.

Now in its 12th year, TinyTalk is a baby signing organisation which allows pre-verbal children to express their needs and thoughts through

signing. Signing empowers babies and allows them to get their message out and cuts out so much of the guesswork and frustration for parents. It also supports their spoken language, giving them the confidence to begin babbling and trying initial sounds.

Multi award-winning TinyTalk, is the first organisation to deliver baby signing classes across the UK. Working with the likes of Disney, Harrods, Supernanny Jo Frost, and charities like Booktrust & National Childbirth Trust, we have helped thousands of families understand each other better over the last decade.

beauty – promo

It’s not often you feel like you’re in a 5 Star Spa in the middle of a London Hotel (not that I have ever been pampered in one) but driving into the cobbled courtyard in

neighbouring Earlsfield, literally 5 minutes away from Arthur Road, I got the feeling this was something special – well, free private parking for a start! Toni Clarke welcomed me on a bright, cold winter’s day and my journey at TLC Therapy Lounge began.

This brand spanking new salon has a quiet atmosphere and the minimalist, elegant décor with its ultra high-end design instantly put me into a relaxed state. Toni Clarke, the dynamic owner and creator of TLC Therapy Lounge, had some surprises in store for me, not least the prestigious French brand, Carita Skin Care, who have partnered with Dr Joel Depondt, a Cranial Facial Surgeon and Scientific Researcher at the Xavier Bichat Hospital, Paris to create the exclusive CINETIC Lift Expert machine.

Toni proceeded with the ‘Anti-Ageing’ treatment (CINETIC Lift Expert Supreme Wrinkle Solution – 90 minutes @ £120) using the CINETIC technology, which is the alternative to cosmetic surgery, with the exclusive combination of Micro-currents, Ultrasound and LED futuristic technologies. CINETIC treatments truly deliver the ultimate results in correcting, lifting and firming. This sensational facial not only left my skin soft and glowing but I felt extremely relaxed and pampered. I drove home in a totally dreamy state. What a treat!” Karine Torr, Editor

The trust that keeps on giving (so you don’t have to)Chris Thurlow explains how you can save inheritance tax without giving anything away

If you or your spouse have either a death in service benefit from your employer and/or a pension death benefit from your pension, significant inheritance tax can be saved

through careful planning but without losing access to those funds if paid.

Nowadays, more and more people have a pension death benefit and/or death in service benefit and, quite often, nominate their spouse as the beneficiary of the lump sum. The problem is that this simply increases the amount of money owned by the surviving spouse and adds to their eventual inheritance tax (IHT) liability. On the surviving spouse’s death 40% of the lump sum will be paid in IHT to HMRC.

So, what can be done to prevent the tax liability without undermining the surviving spouse’s security?

The answer is to create a pilot discretionary trust or “spousal by-pass trust”.

The main purpose of such a trust is for assets (usually money) to be paid into the trust in the future. The trustees then hold the assets for the benefit of the beneficiaries of the trust. Pilot trusts are often created for tax mitigation purposes.

An example would be a husband with a large pension death benefit. He wishes his wife to benefit in a tax efficient way. He creates a pilot discretionary trust during his life. His wife, children and

remoter descendants can be included as potential beneficiaries. He nominates the pension death benefit to the pilot trust.

On his death, the pension death benefit is paid into the pilot trust for the benefit of his wife and children. As it is in a trust, it remains outside his wife’s estate for IHT purposes. However, during her lifetime, his wife is able to benefit from the assets held in the trust.

When his wife dies, the pilot trust fund is ignored when calculating her IHT. This results in a tax saving of up to 40% of the value of the pilot trust fund.

Example

On his death, John leaves his wife with their joint wealth of, say, £650,000. He has also nominated her to receive his death benefit of £250,000. Therefore, Jane has an estate of £900,000. On her death, the nil rate bands for her and John are available which together amount to £650,000. IHT of 40% is payable on the remaining £250,000. There is a tax bill of £100,000.

The alternative

On his death John leaves Jane with their joint wealth of £650,000.

During his life John had created a pilot discretionary

trust. He nominated the trust as the recipient of his death benefit of £250,000.Jane, therefore, has an estate of £650,000. On her death, the nil rate bands for her and John are available which together amount to £650,000. There is no IHT to pay on Jane’s death.

The trust holds the £250,000 lump sum which is outside of Jane’s estate for IHT purposes but remains accessible to her.

It is important to consider all legal, practical and tax implications before creating a trust. At Hart Brown we will guide you on the implications and help you set up a trust that best suits your objectives. We can also act as trustees of the trust.

homes – promobuilding

The summer holidays are upon us and as much as I love the warmer weather

and BBQ’s it also serves as a stark reminder that I need more space. Space for the kids to play, somewhere they can make as much noise as they like, unpack all their toys and play to their heart’s content without me tripping over the lot. Having already converted the loft and extended the ground floor, the only thing left to do is a basement.

Having successfully created wonderful basements for my clients, I know what potential they have. The modern basement is a bright and airy structure which can be used for a multitude of purposes. I am thinking along the lines of a guest suite, a utility room and that playroom with table tennis, a pool table and anything else to keep the

kids amused. I am sure it will in time become the perfect teenage den too. With a bit of luck, we should be able to reclaim the space for ourselves sometime in their twenties... or maybe we should just continue digging. The beauty of basements is that they can extend beyond the foot print of your house, in other words, you can create a basement under your garden without upsetting your neighbours or the planning authorities. Depending on the budget there could be space for that cinema room and wine cellar after all.

Speaking of budgets, a basement could very well be one of the best investments you ever make. There is a tendency in the more expensive areas of London to look at homes in terms of price per square metre, which is the standard used in Europe and elsewhere. Basements cost anything upwards of £2 500 per

square metre, whereas the Halifax index shows that floor space in the Capital is at an average of at least £3,582 per square metre. In areas such as Wimbledon one could conservatively say it is upwards of £4,500 per square metre. Take into consideration the cost of moving and stamp duty and it means that a basement makes great financial sense. Now the only question remaining is, what would you do with all that extra space?

property

My family moved to Dorset Road, Merton Park in 1960 from

Battersea where the smoke of the then active Battersea Power Station became untenable.

Educated locally at the Sacred Heart Primary School, and later Wimbledon College, over 50 years on I still live and work in the SW20 area with my family. The recent improvements and addition of attractive retailers have made Raynes Park a more exciting and dynamic

area contributing to above average house price rises and opportunities for my company.

I have worked in Estate Agency locally for over 30 years setting up Fuller Gilbert in 2001. I now own the company solely and my team and I are giving the office and website a makeover.

The aspect of the job I love is the personal interaction with clients. I like to think I can build a rapport with my clients to minimise the stress factor of the moving process.

We look forward to people coming into the office to discuss any aspect of the property market or just what is going on in the local area.

book review

40 feb–mar 2014 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

As the icy winds blow and the heavens open, sensible bridge players are warm indoors. However, the life of a bridge player is not without problems of the fifty-two card variety…

South opened a Strong 2♥ and North responded 2NT, indicating a poor hand, but not a bust. South jumped straight to game. West led her top-of-a-sequence Q♣ and South pondered her fate. Declarer has a spade and three diamonds to lose. To secure her game, South must trump a diamond in dummy before drawing trumps. However, this declarer crossed to dummy’s A♥ and led a diamond, her K♦ losing to West’s A♦. West led a second heart and, when she regained the lead with Q♦, she led a third round, removing all the trumps from the dummy hand, and defeating the contract.

South must remain focused. All that matters in trumping one diamond in dummy. At trick 2, she should lead out a low diamond. This will lose to Q♦ but, even if a trump is led now, she can win, lose a second diamond and there will always be one trump left in dummy to trump the third round.aceoftrumps.com

Paul Mendelson – The First Rule of SurvivalEditor Karine Torr gets a sneak preview

The review read: ‘A jaw-droppingly brilliant crime thriller. Imagine The Killing moved to Cape Town and into the landscape of the hot and dusty African veld.’

Well, brilliant and thrilling it was! In fact, so much so, that while reading the climax of the

story in bed one night, I was forced to snap the book shut and lunge for Paul’s The Right Way to Play Bridge and start revising my Roman Key-Card Blackwood rules just to get my mind off the tense scene that was unfolding on the pages and causing the blood in my veins to run cold. I think there was also some shallow, hyperventilating involved. However, I couldn’t put it down for long as I just had to see what happened next, even if it meant my heart would stop with fright! It didn’t, but the book swept me along as I got more and more involved with the twists and turns in the story.

Paul has a real talent for speaking and teaching, which anyone who has ever attended his enlightening and amusing courses will attest to, so it’s no surprise that this first novel is set to become a hit. Out on April 7th, it’s the perfect present for any lover of crime fiction – pre-order at bookshops or on amazon.co.uk.

What is a restful mind?

I went to a talk last week by His Eminence Gwalya Dokhampa who has just written a book called The Restful Mind. He is a young monk from Bhutan who understands our Western restlessness. He explains that when we give ourselves a chance to calm and nourish our mind, we open up the time and space for understanding our true nature and that of others.

Does the mind become restful when we sleep?

Yes, and good quality sleep is needed for the mind rest and switch off. A recent study in the Journal of Science shows that brain cells shrink during sleep to open up the gaps between neurons and allow fluid to wash the brain clean. Sleep “cleans” the brain of toxins. I have found the Nikken Sleep System helps the mind to rest. By

combining the natural energies of the Earth (magnetic) and the energies of the sun (Far Infrared), it also helps release stress from the body – a passive and very effective way to maintain good health.

In the spring, a parent’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of a clear-out. But here's a tricky one –

how soon is it ok to repossess a bedroom completely once a child has grown up? As soon as the ink dries on their last A level paper? As soon as they start their graduate fast-track jobs in the Civil Service and are renting bijou pads in Hoxton? (Making various optimistic assumptions about our children here, I know.) My attempts to do even a bit of a spring-clean were treated as desecration on a Howard Carter

scale. Those half-unpacked cardboard boxes from Bristol University lying in the corner since 2011 are sacred! So what am I to do? Maintain a sealed shrine?

My mother ripped down the David Bowie posters in my room and had it reconfi gured as a chintzy Laura Ashley guest-boudoir pretty much the same week that I skulked off to university. I didn’t mind. We weren't mollycoddled in them days, by gum. Of course kids should go through their grunge phase before becoming solicitors

in Cobham, but the teenage fl oor-to-ceiling photo-montages of themselves looking moody at festivals have to go eventually. All that blu-tack has played havoc with the plasterwork and, at the risk of bragging in these days of boomeranging, my adult children don't really live here anymore; yet there was such a wave of revulsion at my unmaternal purge that I felt like Lady Macbeth. All I wanted was to see the carpet in their rooms again – and paint the walls magnolia!

Do you remember the dolly years, when bedroom decor had to be pink and fl uffy or, with little boys, feature some sort of disaster with fi re engines and Spiderman? Children never hark back to that – and yet what a sweet passing of innocence when it all came down. I suppose the kindest thing is for home always to be home until a child feels that they have really made one of their own, (by about age 57.) However, my daughter in Brixton has just ordered a John Lewis over-mantle mirror for her fl at. I know! Her John Lewisifi cation has begun, (as has Brixton’s.) Could I maybe start to introduce just a weeny bit of Laura Ashley into her old room now?
