▶ LAST TIME AGAINST THE GOLDEN KNIGHTSDartmouth exploded for four goals in the third period while firing 49 shots on goal in the 5-1 win between the two teams in Hanover on Jan. 26. Lewis stopped 44 shots in the game, including 35 through 40 minutes, but was unable to stop the third-period surge that put the game away. Five different players scored for the home team that Saturday night.

▶ ALL-TIME VS. CLARKSONFriday night will mark the 99th meeting all-time between the two programs. Clarkson holds a 66-25-7 advantage in those match-ups for an impressive 70.9 winning percentage against its ECAC Hockey rivals from the Upper Valley.

▶ SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCEWith just one loss in its last 10 games (8-1-1), St. Lawrence is getting hot at the right time. Fresh off a weekend sweep of Princeton and No. 1 Quinnipiac, the Saints have gone from the bottom half of the league standings to third in the last three weeks. The 2-1 win over the Bobcats snapped a 21-game unbeaten streak and was the product of two goals from junior Greg Carey. Playing alongside Kyle Flanagan, the duo has formed the most potent offensive grouping in the nation this year as they have a combined 85 points. Carey’s 23 goals are the best in the country this season, while he is also tied for first in Division I with 45 points. Flanagan ranks third in the nation in scoring with 40 points (13g/27a). Matt Weninger is the team’s netminder and boasts a solid 15-11-4 mark coming into the weekend.

▶ LAST TIME AGAINST THE SAINTSTrailing 2-1 coming into the final period of the Jan. 25 contest at Thompson Arena, the Saints’ top line exploded for three goals to pick up the 4-2 victory. Flanagan, Carey and linemate Jeremy Wick each scored a marker in a 7:04 stretch to put the game away and pick up the two league points.

▶ ALL-TIME VS. ST. LAWRENCEIn 89 previous meetings between the Saints and Big Green, St. Lawrence owns a 54-32-3 advantage (.624%).

▶ DOUBLE UPFor the second time this season, two members of the Big Green found the back of the net twice in the same game. Sophomores Jesse Beamish and Eric Neiley both scored once in the first period and again in the third to cap the comeback against the Raiders. Back on Nov. 2 against Yale, Tyler Sikura, Eric Robinson and Matt Lindblad each scored twice in a 7-4 win.

▶ SPLITSVILLELast weekend saw head coach Bob Gaudet use both Cab Morris and Charles Grant between the pipes on consecutive days for the first time since the home series with this weekend’s opponents last month. Grant made his first start since the first contest with the Saints after Morris got the nod in five straight.

▶ IVY LEAGUE UPDATEDartmouth had an opportunity to make a run at the Ivy League crown, but the loss to Cornell have hurt those chances of catching Yale. The Elis are alone at the top with 12 points and two games left, while Princeton is third with eight points and four Ivy games remaining. Dartmouth has just next Friday’s match-up with the Tigers left on its Ancient Eight (six) slate and has 10 points to sit second currently.

▶2012-13 IVY LEAGUE STANDINGS

▶ NEW HIGHSFor Beamish, scoring twice set a new career high for the sophomore from Ontario. Coming into the game with Colgate, Beamish had six goals in 41 career games, including two in 16 this season.

▶ LOST IN THE SHUFFLEWith Neiley and Beamish’s goals getting all the attention, it was senior Dustin Walsh quietly going about his business with a three-point night against the Raiders. The Shannonville, Ontario, native scored once himself and assisted on the first Beamish tally and the final marker from Neiley.

▶ NICE TIMINGNeiley’s seventh of the season came with just 5:19 left in the third period with his team on the power play after he himself draw an interference call just 45 seconds earlier. The Warminster, Pa., native one-timed a shot from the top of the crease after a pretty passing play from Walsh and fellow sophomore Andy Simpson.

▶ THIS PLACE SEEMS FAMILIARSaturday’s game will mark the return of the Big Green to Appleton Arena just a year removed from a historic achievement. Dartmouth swept the Saints out of last year’s first round, marking the first time in the building’s 60-year history that St. Lawrence failed to win a game in a playoff series. Overall, the Green and White were 3-0 in Canton last season after taking the regular season contest in November as well.

▶ MAKE HIM SAY “D’OH”In the last two games with the Saints, Simpson has found the back of the net. His first career goal came in Dartmouth’s 4-1 elimination of SLU last year. He also scored with less than a second remaining in the first period in the Jan. 25 meeting this season. A Feb. 10 goal at Harvard is Simpson’s only collegiate goal not to come at the expense of Weninger.

▶ BIG TIME SAVESThe last two times a goalie has recorded 40+ saves in a game against the Green have both been Clarkson netminders. Lewis stopped 44 in the earlier meeting this winter, while before that you would have to look back to Feb. 26, 2011 when then-Knights’ goalie Paul Karpowich turned aside 43 Dartmouth shots in a 4-1 loss at Thompson Arena.

▶ NEED THOSE POINTSHome-ice in the first round or quarterfinals would greatly help the Big Green’s postseason chances as the team is 10-3 in Hanover this season and just 2-6-3 on the road (0-0-1 neutral).

▶ SECOND TO 10Tyler Sikura matched Eric Robinson with his team-leading 10th goal of the season against the Big Red. The sophomore center snapped home a wrist shot over Andy Iles’ glove right off the faceoff with 3:03 left in the middle frame. He had 11 as a freshman in 2011-12.

Head Coach

BOB GAUDET ’81Now in his 16th season as head coach of the Dartmouth men’s ice hockey program, Bob Gaudet has firmly established himself in the lore of this century-old program. A 1981 Dartmouth graduate and four-year member of the varsity hockey team, Gaudet has made the Big Green one of the most consistent teams in both ECAC Hockey and the Ivy League during his time behind the bench.

In the last two seasons, Gaudet has reached several key milestones, earning his 200th win behind the Big Green bench in 2010-11 and eclipsing the 300-career win mark in the first game of 2011-12.

In 24 seasons as a head coach, including the last 15 at Dartmouth, Gaudet has worked with and developed some of the nation’s top talents. Eight former Dartmouth players suited up for NHL teams in 2010-11 alone and nine total in that time. Several more former student-athletes also played in other professional leagues in the last two years, including the KHL, AHL, ECHL and the CHL.

Entering the 2012-13 season, Gaudet ranks second all-time at Dartmouth with 219 wins, trailing only Big Green legend Eddie Jeremiah ’30, who racked up 308 victories in 26 seasons with the program. Gaudet’s .507 winning percentage (219-212-54) is the third-best mark at Dartmouth as well.

In 2010-11, Gaudet and the Big Green made huge strides to return to national prominence. Dartmouth finished the season ranked No. 15 in the nation after posting 19 wins and winning the ECAC Hockey Consolation Game in Atlantic City, N.J.

At Dartmouth, Gaudet guided the Big Green to seven straight winning seasons from the 2000-01 season to 2006-07 and had 20-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2004-05. The 20-13-2 record in 2004-05 marked the team’s fifth consecutive campaign above .500, the first time that had happened in school history. Gaudet has also led the Big Green to seven straight home playoff series, and in 2001, the program made its first trip to the ECAC semifinals in 20 years. He earned his 200th career win against St. Lawrence on Feb. 11, 2005 and has a Dartmouth record of 219-212-54 (Entering this year).

The Big Green has won two titles under Gaudet. In 2007 Dartmouth captured a share of its first Ivy title since Gaudet was in net in 1980. The 2005-06 season gave Dartmouth

its first-ever ECACHL title. Gaudet was also named ECAC Hockey’s Coach of the Year, making him the second coach to earn the award with two separate teams. He was also a finalist for the Division I Coach of the Year Award. Gaudet has now had two Ivy League Players of the Year, Mike Ouellette earned the honor in 2005-06 while David Jones was given the title in 2006-07. Jones was also an All-America, giving Gaudet four back-to-back players to earn that distinction.

After nine successful seasons behind the Brown University bench from 1988-97, Gaudet returned to Hanover for the 1997-98 campaign.

Gaudet took over Brown’s coaching reins in 1988 and immediately went about transforming the Bears from a perennial cellar-dweller into one of the ECAC’s top programs. During his tenure, Brown steadily climbed in the league standings, from 12th in ’89 to eighth in ’90 and ’91, fifth in ’92, third in ’93, fourth in ’94 and all the way to second in ’95. Since his return in 1997, Gaudet began the same process at Dartmouth. The Big Green finished 11th his first two years, eighth in 2000, fifth in ’01, third in ’05 and was tied for first in 2006-07.

In the summer of 1990, Gaudet served as the assistant coach of the East Team in the Olympic Sports Festival, held in Minneapolis. In 1994, he served again as head coach of the East Team, and also coached the East All-Star Team in the East-West Shrine College Hockey Classic. Gaudet spent the summer of 1998 behind the bench of the New England Select 16-Team at USA Hockey’s Summer Festival in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Gaudet and his wife Lynne, also a 1981 Dartmouth graduate, reside in Etna, N.H., and have three children: sons Joe and Jim and daughter Kelly. Eldest son Joe graduated from Dartmouth in 2010, while Jim earned his degree from the College in 2012. Both Joe and Jim played four seasons with the Big Green with each serving as an alternate captain in their final seasons with the team. Kelly is a senior at Hanover High School in 2012-13 where she is the starting goalie and co-captain of the girl’s ice hockey team.

▶ ALL AT HOMEKeeping in line with the team’s theme of home successes in 2012-13, freshman Nick Bligh scored his third goal of the year early in the third against Cornell to pull his team to within one. All three of Bligh’s markers have come in front of the Thompson Arena crowd.

▶ GETTING BACK AT ITIt is expected that the Green will see some offensive help this weekend in the return of Eric Robinson and Matt Lindblad to the lineup. Robinson was hurt in the first period against Cornell, while Lindblad has been out since suffering an upper-body injury on Feb. 2 at RPI.

▶ SO CLOSE TO THE TOPA 6-for-6 showing on the penalty kill against Cornell and Colgate pushed the Big Green’s unit back to second in the country. Dartmouth boasts a 90.1% success rate down a man this season (82-91). The only team ahead of the Green’s PK unit is Quinnipiac (91.0%).

▶ BENCH BOSSESA week after three of the league’s top coaches of the past two decades were all present at Thompson (Gaudet, Cornell’s Schafer and Colgate’s Don Vaughn), this weekend will see the other end of the spectrum. Clarkson’s Casey Jones is in just his second season with the program, while SLU’s Greg Carvel is in his first campaign leading the Saints with the unenviable task of following coaching legend Joe Marsh.

▶ ON THE CUSPWith just two more points, Sikura will become the first player since Scott Fleming in 2010-11 to reach the 30-point mark. Fleming had 31 points (13g/18a) as a senior and 39 (22g/17a) as a junior in 2009-10.

▶ A +/- ODDITYDartmouth’s +5 this season is tied for second in the league with Colgate and Rensselaer. Quinnipiac is first in the league with an astonishing +31 rating.

▶ SIX NO MOREThe tie at a sold-out Lynah Rink in November snapped the Big Red’s six-game win streak over the Big Green dating back to the 2010-11 season. In all, Dartmouth is winless in its last eight vs. Cornell (0-6-2) with the last victory coming back on Feb. 20, 2010 (5-4) in Hanover. Last season, the Red took all four games in the series, including a sweep (2-0) in the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.

▶ CLOSER THAN YOU THINKDespite the outcomes, this Cornell-Dartmouth series has been much closer than people would think at first glance. Nine of the last 10 contests between the two have either been decided by one goal (7) or ended in a draw (2). The

▶ VOTE FOR HOBEYFan voting is open for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to college hockey’s best player. Dartmouth has two nominees on this season’s fan ballot as both Matt Lindblad and Sikura make their first appearances.

▶ EXTRA TIMEDartmouth is 0-1-4 in overtime games this season. Then-fifth-ranked Quinnipiac remains the only team to take down the Green in OT this year (3-2 – Jan. 4), while Yale, Cornell, Union and now Harvard have all skated to draws with the team from the Upper Valley. ▶ DON’T SEE THAT TOO OFTENThe 3-0 shutout loss at RPI marked the first time in 48 games that Dartmouth was held off the

scoreboard in a game. The last time an opponent shut out the Green came back on Nov. 19, 2011 when Clarkson skated to a 4-0 home victory at Cheel Arena.

▶ LONE TEAM TO DO IT TWICEAgainst Union, Dartmouth scored two times on the nation’s second-best penalty kill, becoming the only team in 2012-13 to find the back of the net twice in one game against the Dutchmen.

▶ AGAINST THE BESTUnion came into the game boasting the nation’s best power play (26.3%; 31-118), but was stymied by Dartmouth’s pesky PK unit. The home team finished 1-for-5 on the night, while the Big Green were 2-for-3 on their man-advantage situations. When facing off with the best power play this season at the time of the game, the penalty kill from Dartmouth is a combined 10-for-11 (90.9%) in two outings (Union, Bentley)

▶ CAREER DAYJunior Cab Morris turned aside a career-high 37 shots at Union in earning a 2-2 tie. The Dartmouth netminder’s previous best of 31 had been reached twice this season. Although he benefited from the five extra minutes of play, Morris had 34 stops through the end of regulation before making an additional three saves in OT.

The PairWise Ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine par-ticipants for the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament. The PWR compares Teams Under Consideration (TUC), those with a Ratings Per-centage Index (RPI) of .500 or more, judging them by four criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, record against other TUC if a team has played 10 or more games against TUC, and the RPI.
