Data visualization greatly enhances not only data comprehension, but it allows for a greater coverage of trends and patterns within structured & unstructured data.

The Data Visualization Summit brings together leaders and experts in the field to   explain and clarify the numerous benefits of using data visualization. One of the top benefits is that data becomes easier to understand, more accessible and presented in a format that helps people better interact with the data as well as analyze it.

Typically data is used for mining and reporting, however there are a new sets of data visualization tools that can take your analysis to a whole new level. This has made it possible to quickly understand trends, patterns, and outliers that would not have been noticed with traditional tools.

The Data Visualization Summit will run concurrently with the Big Data Innovation Summit to add to these fantastic networking opportunities.

Christopher Scott is a Data Visualization Architect at BB&T in the Liability Risk Management Department. Christopher has created visualization tools for fraud detection and prevention across multiple detection teams within the bank. He is currently working on an data application suite using Tableau Software to assist other detection teams. His enthusiastic personality and ardent pursuit to prevent fraud should make fraudsters think twice.

The Ever Increasing World of Technology has a Dark SideThe ever increasing world of technology has a dark side: fraudsters are becoming faster, stronger, and inflicting more damage than ever. The amount of time between the fraud event and a mitigating reaction is literally money. The anti-fraud environment has the highest standards for good data visualization. Visualizers want real-time visualizations of transactional data, designs that pop when a change occurs, and a high number of viewers per visualizer. The visualizer designs to provoke a reaction in the viewer. Ultimately, these same standards will apply to all environments, leading to a fundamental change in our concept of talent.

Alberto Cuadra is Graphics Editor at the Washington Post specialized in the creation of data visualization and explanatory graphics using a wide range of techniques, from traditional il lustration tools to interactive development and motion graphics. Alberto has spent most of his 18 years career in newspapers, starting as a reporter in his native Spain for the national newspaper El Mundo, and later as a infographics specialist for several organizations, such as Reuters, The Houston Chronicle and finally the Washington Post.

Data Visual izat ion and Improving Conversions Data visualization has become a central tool in the conversion of The washington Post’s progressive conversion into a multiplatform news hub. However the design of compelling data pieces for our growing digital audience faces unique challenges and requirements in our workflow. Creating data driven infografics for the Washington Post is an act of balance. Our pieces are an exercise of equilibrium to meet time constrains, audience ever-changing tastes as well as the right mix of complexity and clarity while delivering engaging and attractive design to tell a story to our diverse audience. That combined with the constant pressure of pushing innovation in interactivity and new forms of delivering news. I will try to describe how our team approach data visualization, our process, how, overtime we changed our workflow to meet and increasing appetite for data driven information visuals and how we combine varied skills and techniques to deliver our product.

Building Responsive Data Visualization for the WebHow can responsive web design inform data visualization as we move to a mobile-dominated, multi-device internet? This session will discuss distilling data to its base: numbers. And we’ll treat design and interaction as enhancement. Mirroring the mobile-first approach to responsive design, we will represent data in its minimal state, and rely on web technologies for presentation. This way, we can build scalable, contextual, maintainable visualizations. When we create for the web, we design and code for an audience that no longer is consuming on a traditional computer screen. We, as content creators, need to evolve to stay relevant in this new mobile-driven landscape.

Working at the Boundaries of Aesthetics and Inference: Prescriptions for Enabling Statistical Reasoning in Modern Data Visualization

Data visualization is increasingly consumed on readily-accessible web devices through highly responsive and interactive interfaces. This is a huge boon for consumers of such data but much of the current energy around visualization is centered on new tools and methods for creating more engaging presentations, with little focus on aiding decision making. In this talk I’ll cover how data visualization is used at Activision and offer a set of guiding principles we strive to follow in the pursuit of combining intuitive, engaging data visualization with statistical information needed for sound reasoning.

David Schmittdiel is the Manager for Business Intelligence Development at StubHub, the world’s largest fan-to-fan ticket marketplace. Prior to joining the Analytics group, David helped develop a novel search engine marketing platform for StubHub. He received his MS in Nuclear Engineering from M.I.T. working on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak plasma physics experiment before re-locating to the Bay Area. Now residing just outside of Philadelphia, David enjoys leading a very talented group of developers who strive to deliver high quality BI solutions to a wide audience of internal users. On weekends you can usually find him coaching soccer or trying to make progress on the litany of home improvement projects that he’s started yet never finished.

Visualizing Data within StubHub’s “Home Grown” BI Framework

Recently StubHub made the decision to deprecate our enterprise-level implementation of Business Objects and migrate to a completely open source, home grown business intelligence solution. The primary goal of this ambitious project is to create a self-service, highly customizable, fully interactive reporting interface offering a “single source of truth” platform with myriad visualization options for internal business users. Central to our product offering is a collection of interactive dashboards based on a templatized jQuery front-end and an all-Python back-end, serving up data from an intermediary data store. The data visualization engine is powered by d3, an open source JavaScript library that streamlines custom visualization development. By harnessing the powerful features available in d3 for rendering charts and graphs, insights may be gleaned more easily and with far less time spent executing traditional report development. Users are thus empowered to answer more of their business questions without analytics support, freeing up resources for more in-depth ad hoc analysis.

Data Visualization in Drug Development

This talk will take the audience on a brief journey through the speaker’s 20-plus-year career in pharmaceutical R&D, a journey through chemistry, biology, and medical science knit together by computers, mathematics, and art. After a brief review of some innovative ways to visualize complex, high-dimensional data in drug discovery, the speaker will introduce the audience to the world of clinical development, one of the most time-consuming, expensive, and failure-prone human enterprises. In particular, we will highlight how big data and information visualization can aid in the design and execution of large, multi-center clinical trials. One of the keys to running a successful trial is the selection of high quality clinical sites, i.e., sites that are able to enroll patients quickly, engage them on an ongoing basis to prevent drop-out, and execute the trial in strict accordance to the clinical protocol. Here, we describe how we leverage the vast amounts of historical data obtained through our central clinical laboratory operations using a set of dynamic visualization displays and a normalization strategy for site performance to enable clinical trial planners to make more informed decisions. Once the trial is ongoing, data visualization can be a powerful means to monitor site performance and risk, and recommend targeted interventions. In essence, this is a talk about the invigorating diversity of data science, the power of data visualization, and the elusive art of story-telling.

Cory Mollet is a urban data geek with an interest in using data to make cities better places to live. He spent too much time playing SimCity during his formative years and his obsession with the built environment borders on unhealthy. He now leads Edifice, an open-source project that aims to make open government data more useful to designers, developers, and researchers.

Visualizing Every Aspect of the Built Environment

A new technology called Mobile Terrestrial LiDAR (MTL) makes it possible to generate perfect 3D renderings of cities through the use of vehicle-mounted laser scanners. With MTL, everything in the built environment visible from street level up to 18 stories can be captured and analyzed. Visualizing this data (and the results of analyzing this data) presents unique challenges. "Dots on a map" may be fine for most geospatial data visualizations, but what if you need to display the results of analyzingthe an awning, wall sign, sidewalk condition, facade, utility pole device, and more - all on the same building? This talk will discuss these challenges and some approaches to visualizing minute details of the built environment.

Graphics Director at The Boston Globe. I worked previously for several media in Spain and as graphics consultant for Innovation Media Consulting, including clients such as Il Corriere (Italy), Le Monde (France), i (Portugal) or Eleftheros Typos (Greece) among others. I have been internationally awarded more than 50 times, including SND, Malofiej or European Newspaper Design Awards.

Desktop, Tablet, Mobile, Paper, Fridge

The Boston Globe's strategy for data visualization and graphics says that every piece must feel on every device as if it was designed specifically for it. This includes desktop computers, tablets, cellphones... and the newspaper. But they must be responsive in a way that, if fridges have screens in the future, our graphics will be prepared for that to. This conference will explain how the graphics and data visualization teams at the Globe are dealing with this strategy.

Big Data, Small Data: Going Beyond Visualization for Unknown Inputs

Visualizing big data is hard, particularly in the browser. But visualizing small data can be a challenge as well, for a whole different set of reasons. Often, these challenges can be mitigated by in-depth knowledge of the data -- understanding the characteristics and meaning of the data’s elements allows engineers and designers to build customized, fit-for-purpose interfaces. When you're building an exploratory analysis application, however, you don't have this luxury. You need to deal equally well with 10 rows or 10 million, handle an astonishing variety of edge cases, and still make it look simple for non-technical users. In this presentation, ClearStory Data's Nick Rabinowitz will discuss techniques and approaches for analysis interfaces that delight the user, even when the data is unknown and unpredictable.

Dr. Ketan Mane is a Senior Research Scientist in the Health Informatics and Bioscience Group at Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI). His research work focuses to improve patient care by optimizing a clinician’s ability to identify treatment options that work. Using a data evidence-based approach, the identified evidence on similar patients is personalized and transformed into actionable data for quick use at the point of care, while providing predictive insights on treatment options. The ability to do so, offers potential to reduce error in treatment prescription related errors, and lower the cost of patient care.

Data Driven Solutions to Transform and Make Big Data Actionable

Data is the new “gold" of the information age with knowledge extraction being a complex process involving frequent shifts in data transformations and models, and graphical representations. Data Science offers opportunities to resolve this critical data to knowledge transformation step by reducing information to a manageable size that we can comprehend. However, the key is - how to best reduce data? and also how do we make sense from information? Taking a data-driven approach, we are exploring new approaches at the intersection of analytics and visualization to design new tools that understands the user needs, engages them, and empowers them. The talk will present selected projects that attempt to address the needs of complex problems by contributing innovative solutions to transform large volumes of data into actionable data and knowledge for rapid absorption, and help facilitate decision making.

As a current Detroit Revitalization Fellow, Melissa Dittmer educates the public about the importance of architecture and urban design strategies in the regeneration of cities. As the senior in-house design architect for Rock Ventures, she is responsible for the research, analysis, programming, and conceptual design of future projects. Most recently, Melissa worked with Loveland Technologies and Data Driven Detroit to lead the graphic design and data visualization of the Detroit Blight Removal Task Force Plan – a 340-page document outlining strategies for the removal of 84,00+ blighted properties in Detroit. Prior to Rock Ventures, Melissa was a member of the Detroit Strategic Framework Long Term Planning team at HAA where she led the graphic design and data visualization of Detroit Future City – a 350-page document that summarized the team’s collective research, civic engagement feedback, and Detroit regeneration strategies.

Detroit's Data Narratives: Working Towards an Open, Comprehensive Database and Multiple Detroit Data Narratives

Within the past three years, significant data mapping and data consolidation has occurred for the city of Detroit, resulting in a single object - a shared, public database. Multiple publications have been released summarizing the various stages of this massive data consolidation effort. Detroit Future Cityarticulated over 3000 pages of technical research and data analysis into a shared vision for Detroit’s future. Following the release ofDetroit Future City, the federally appointed Blight Removal Task Force, in partnership with Michigan Nonprofit Association, Data Driven Detroit, and Loveland Technologies, began a physical survey to gather property condition data for all 380,000 parcels in the city. The goal of the Motor City Mapping project was to create a comprehensive database of detailed information including the condition of each and every property in Detroit. Upon the completion of the Motor City Mapping project, the Blight Task Force issued the Detroit Blight Removal Task Force Plan – a 340-page document outlining strategies for the removal of 84,00+ blighted properties in Detroit.

With all of this consolidated information being made available to the public, Detroit is at the threshold of true regeneration – but which direction (narrative) will the city take towards equitable growth and urban renewal? Through the lens of descriptive relativism, anyone may interpret a single body of research that results in different modes of thought and standards of reasoning about that single body of information. In short, Detroit’s urban research can be completed, read, interpreted, and visualized to tell many different stories to a multiplicity of audiences.

This interactive session will include presentations by the software designers and data visualization experts responsible for multiple Detroit publications and the Motor City Mapping project. Following the presentations, the session will explore the potential of urban research techniques, data visualization, and the deliberate creation of multiple urban narratives.
