2. Ten Datacenter Strategies

from Kenneth Hess From “www.serverwatch.com” on June 17, 2010 Kenneth Hess proposed 10 datacenter strategies:2.1 Greening2.2 Consolidation 2.3 Virtualization2.4 Leveraged Cloud Computing

10

Ten Datacenter Strategies (Cont.)

11

Page 12: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.1 Greening of Datacenter

12

To reduce power consumption, e.g.- Use Solid State Drives (SSD) instead of disk- Use computers which require less power

Page 13: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.2 Consolidation

Doing more with less such as switching to Linux.

13

Page 14: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.3 Virtualization

Using higher-end hardware to house multiple and disparate workloads onto a single system or cluster of systems.

14

Page 15: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.4 Leveraged Cloud Computing

Using service offered by Commercial Cloud Provider which offers 24x7x365 availability, maintenance, support, etc.

and save money.

15

Page 16: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.5 Private Cloud

Setting up your own cloud computing, tapping on all the equipment at your own datacenter.

16

Page 17: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.6 Disaster Recovery

Setting up a mirror site with load balancers.

17

Page 18: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.7 Leveraged Content Delivery

Instead of buying extra bandwidth, you can use the service such as Akamai.

Sample customers of Akamai are MTV, MySpace, Fox Interactive.

18

Page 19: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.8 Storage-Area Networks

Instead of using a lot of storage devices, you should use Storage-Area Networks (SAN) which are- expandable- scalable- inexpensive

19

Page 20: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.9 Remote Backup

To ensure safe and secure data backup and restore, online backup could be used and it is- inexpensive- reliable- agile

20

Page 21: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

Remote Backup (Cont.)

Sample commercial services are- Intronis- MozyPro- i365

21

Page 22: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2.10 Automation

Automation is a key strategy to manage the new generation of datacenters.

Fully automated datacenter will be available soon.

22

Page 23: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

3. Other Datacenter Strategies

3.1 Datacenter Strategies from www.process.com

3.2 Microsoft Datacenter for Bing Search Engine

23

Page 24: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

3.1 Datacenter Strategiesfrom www.process.com

From www.processor.com, Vol. 32, Issue 1, January 1, 2010, two strategies were mentioned 3.1.1 A Different Shade of Greening3.1.2 Maximizing the Value of Existing

HW & SW

24

Page 25: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

3.1.1 Greening of Datacenter

Info-Tech suggested that it is still a good strategy to reduce energy costs.

Years ago, Datacenter had a power density of about 500 watts per square meter but in 2010, it is 20 times or more. 25

Page 26: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

Greening of Datacenter (Cont.)

Three options have been mentioned1) Flywheel UPS2) Economizers3) Computer Systems Based on DC Power

26

Page 27: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

1) Flywheel

The use of a few-meter diameter flywheel running with electricity.

When electricity fails, the moment of inertia keeps the flywheel turning

and producing electricity for temporary use.

Flywheel UPS is greener and generate less hea than conventional battery-based UPS.

27

Page 28: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

Flywheel (Cont.)

From www.onmovements.com on 13 September 2010.

28

Page 29: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

2) Economizers

Economizers are systems that use cool outside air to drop datacenter temperature rather than using expensive air conditioning.

29

Page 30: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

3) Computer Systems Based on DC Power

Bring AC power from the street to charge up batteries and then deliver the DC from batteries to computer equipment and save 6-12% of energy.

(Some vendors claimed 15-30% saving)

30

Page 31: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

3.1.2 Virtualization

Pund-it (www.pund-it.com)

proposed virtualization to maximize the value of existing hardware and software.

31

Page 32: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

3.2 Microsoft Datacenter for Bing Search Engine

From dcsblog.burtongroup.com on April 21, 2010, Microsoft is looking at Solid State Disk (SSD) for its datacenter for Bing Search Engine.

32

Page 33: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

Microsoft Datacenter (Cont.)

Microsoft wished to gain two benefits: - Reduce power consumption / node,

e.g. a processor operates at 10 watts

instead of 50 watts.- Smaller form factor, with small power supplies,

more servers could be packed in smaller space.

33

6.3 Servers Slow Downas Data Center Heats Up

From “www.datacenterknowledge.com” on 23 August 2010, Purdue University applied the logic “Most people slow down as the weather get hotter”

to its datacenter.58

Page 59: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

Data Center Heats Up (Cont.)

Purdue developed software that can slow server activities as temperature rises.

The technique allowed Purdue datacenter to continue operating during several cooling outages, throttling down server activities to prevent the room from overheating.

59

Page 60: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

6.4 Drunken EmployeeShoots Up A Server

From “www.datacenterknowledge.com” on 26 August 2010, Police in Salt Lake City said Jeshua Campbell an employee of a mortgage company opened fire on a server with a 45 caliber gun.

61

Page 62: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

Drunken Employee Shoots Up A Server (Cont.) A co-worker told police

she found Campbell passed out on the floor with the pistol next to him.

Campbell told police his gun was stolen and used to shoot up the IT equipment.

6.5 Computer Outages Hobble Services in Virginia

From “www.datacenterknowledge.com” on 27 August 2010, more than 220 servers were offline in Chesterfield, Virginia, leaving 24 state agencies without full IT support.

64

Page 65: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

The failure appears to be linked to a hardware failure in storage area network.

The affected sites included the Virginia Information Technologies Agency. 65

67

Page 68: Datacenter Strategies and Trends 2010

Concluding Remarks (Cont.)

All interested parties should try to find documents similar to those presented in this paper from Google and other sources in order to study and find out whether or not they are applicable to their datacenters.
