EPro-8 Challenge

Last week sixteen of our Year 5 and 6 students were selected to compete in the EPro-8

challenge - an engineering/technology and problem solving race.

All four teams were dynamic and performed incredibly well. Congratulations to Liam Hulme,

Clare Flatman, Maddy Jackson and Noah Hamilton who are going through to the Canterbury

semi-finals. Our world is full of endless possibilities and careers in science and technology and

it’s super exciting to see our students so inspired. Here is a sample of what they had to say

afterwards:

“The EPro8 Challenge was one of the best things I’ve ever done! I loved the challenges and when I grow

up I want to do something like this for a job. I’ve always liked technology and problem solving and this

was my way of expressing it.” -Liam Hulme

“The Epro8 opportunity has blown my mind. It’s made me think that technology isn’t just computers and

ipads, it’s a lot more than that. I might even be a future technician.” -Faiz Dean

“Before Epro8 I thought that technology & science was boring, but after this experience I realised that

doing Epro8 was one of the best things that has happened to me.”- Clare Flatman

“EPro8 is one of the first times I've been able to represent the school and II got to represent it in building

and technology. I now want to go away from this and be an inventor!!!!!” -Noah Hamilton

“I learnt lots about myself. I learnt that I can actually do more and bigger things than I ever imagined. I

also learnt that in real life it’s harder than just a game. I thought that technology was just gadgets, but

it’s not - it’s way more cooler.”-Rylan Underwood

Co-opting onto the Board of Trustees Paparoa Street School will soon enter the redevelopment phase of our building works, under the Christchurch Schools Rebuild Project. Our school will undergo a major redevelopment. This process will include designing a Project Brief document that outlines our vision for teaching and learning and how that translates into our teaching spaces we will create, before moving into the master planning process. The BOT believes it is very important to equip ourselves with a team of skilled and dedicated people, who can offer their expertise and passion through this process from commencement to completion, enabling us to fulfil our vision for our learners. For this reason we are seeking people within our school community who would be keen in becoming a co-opted member of the BOT. A co opted Board member can be appointed to the Board for a specific project or for specific skills. We are looking for people with strengths and interests in any or all of the following areas Cultural Responsiveness, Future Focused learning, Construction or Project management. Members of our current board would be happy to meet with you to discuss any questions you may have around BOT governance or to talk with you about the redevelopment phase. Board elections take place early next year and with a number of our current board stepping down due to children graduating from our school, we are keen to form a strong team of personnel who will continue into the next board term to be part of our major development works. The co-option process at this time is part of our succession planning and will allow some interested people to experience Board of Trustees work prior to the next Board election. We would love to have people interested in co-option attend our next Board meeting on Monday 25 June followed by expressions of interest so we can complete the co-option process ready for the beginning of Term 3. We encourage you to make contact with Pene Abbie or a member of our board if this governance opportunity excites you, or you have any questions that you wish to discuss. HE KURA KŌRERO - THE GIFT OF SPEECH

Court Theatre School Performance, to kickstart our celebrations of Matariki.

He Kura Kōrero - The Gift of Speech

“Ko te reo kia tika, ko te reo kia rere, ko te reo kia Māori!”

The love of language. The power of words to change our lives and connect us to stories. The courage to face our fears and learn from the challenge is at the heart of He Kura Kōrero.

Kaiarahi is fun, bright and strong… but sometimes struggles with being brave. This performance embraces Kaiarahi’s adventure to find the courage to speak Te Reo Māori, be a part of the exciting journey and delve into magical worlds through language.

He Kura Kōrero inspires young people to be bold and brave when using Te Reo Māori in their everyday life, whether they know a little or a lot.

The performance explores Te Reo Māori through live music, puppetry, Kapa haka, song, and storytelling.

Alphabet Bags

Thank you so much for the offers of help to sew the drawstring bags for the alphabet bags. We have many busy hands and your help is very much appreciated.

A request for the Non- Sewers in our community.

We are now looking for items that can go into the alphabet bags and are wanting a variety of things to in-spire learning for our youngest and ESOL learners.

We are needing small/ medium sized items that you can donate to this resource. Often there are small toys or items that your children have discarded or no longer needing or playing with. I have attached a list of items that could spark some ideas.

Please bring them into the office and give them to Camille who will be collected them for us.

I hope that your trash can be our treasure!
