Aden Bowman Newsletter- August 2019 2

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

On behalf of the staff of Aden Bowman Collegiate, I would like to welcome all students and their families to the

2019/20 school year. I hope you have had an enjoyable summer and are all energized for the upcoming school

year. As September nears, I want to introduce you to our new staff members, remind you of school start-up dates,

and invite you to be an integral part of your son or daughter’s learning journey.

Aden Bowman continues to be a great school on so many levels. The school enrolment is expected to be approxi-

mately 950 students, including a graduating class of 225 students. I am genuinely proud of the Bowman staff who

are passionate educators, strong relationship builders, set high expectations, value the development of the whole

person, and encourage and support students to achieve their best both in and out of the classroom.

As for new staff members, I would like to welcome the following teachers to the Bowman Family: Laura Swerhone, (EAL), Brittany Cooper (ELA), Sarah Suchan (Music), and Pat Kelly (Educational Assistant). As well, Shelly Ka-chuck (Main Office secretary) will be joining our staff. With respect to start-up dates, staff return to school on Monday, August 26th for 5 days of professional learning

and preparation for the school year. The first day for students will be Tuesday, September 3rd. Grade 9 students

will meet at 8:50 am in Castle Theatre for an orientation/welcome to Aden Bowman. Grades 10 – 12 students will

meet in their assigned period 2 homerooms at 10:20 for registration procedures. Students will proceed through a

shortened class schedule with period 5 concluding at 3:20. (Please refer to the First Day schedule on page 3)

The City of Saskatoon will construct a water retention pond at Ashley Park in order to eliminate the damage to

homes in that area due to heavy rainfalls. As a result, the field space at Ashley Park for Physical Education classes

and athletic practices will eventually be eliminated. Therefore, the City of Saskatoon will redevelop our sports

field behind the school this fall with new grass, underground water sprinklers, fencing, and improved parking. The

field should be ready for use by both Bowman students and the public by the spring of 2020. We will still have

access to Ashely Park this coming year with the development of the retention pond scheduled to begin in the

spring.

Parents/guardians are always welcome in our school at any time. One way to get involved is by joining our School

Community Council (SCC). Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 17th, 7:00 pm in the LRC. If you are

interested, please contact me by phone (306-683-7601), by email ([email protected]), or simply attend the

first meeting.

Ms. Marnie Ross (Vice Principal) and I welcome any suggestions and/or feedback to improve our learning commu-

nity. Our doors are always open and we look forward to meeting you.

Thank you and looking forward to a great 2019/20 school year.

Paul Humbert

Principal

Regular attendance is directly related to SCHOOL SUCCESS. We appreciate the support from parents/guardians

in this regard and expect our students are capable of being here regularly. Thank you for your assistance in these matters.

GENERAL ATTENDANCE POLICY Irregular and poor attendance will be handled as follows:

• Calls for unexcused absences will continue to be made daily (each school day evening) to the home to advise parents.

• Teachers and administrators will attempt to contact parents regarding increasing attend-ance problems.

• Attendance letters will be sent home to advise of significant problems and possible removal from classes where attendance is poor.

• Meetings with students and parents at the school may be requested by either the parent or school staff re-lated to attendance issues.

Parents/guardians must call in to excuse any class that their child will miss even if the student has informed the teacher of their absence.

ATTENDANCE PARENT CALLS TO CLEAR ABSENCES “Explained” absences are those where a parent/guardian calls the school to indicate that the student is away for an unavoidable reason. Examples of these would be:

• Illness, • medical appointments, • attending a competitive event that cannot be avoided during school time

or • for compassionate reasons.

These absences are recorded as “cleared” or “excused” and classroom teachers are notified of this at the end of the day. “Unexplained” absences are recorded and reported when either no call is received or the school cannot legitimately sanction the absence. Examples of these would be:

• home studying • working • sleeping in • at a hair appointment.

In these cases, the absence would be left “unexplained” or “uncleared”. **Please note, absences dating back further than two weeks cannot be cleared. Please ensure to contact the school to excuse absences as soon as possible if students will be away for any reason.**

LATE FOR CLASS BUT MARKED ABSENT Students who are late for class but marked absent will need to have the teacher notify the main office and correct the error. These absences WILL NOT be changed to a late from a parent/guardian phone call.

SASKATCHEWAN HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT OPTIONS In Saskatchewan, students must successfully complete and pass 24 course credits such as English language arts, math and science in order to graduate with a Grade 12 program standing. The Saskatchewan High School Credit Options Guide explains a Saskatchewan High School Grade 12 program standing – what’s required and where you have choices. It also identifies opportu-nities to earn secondary level course credits in non- traditional ways, career plan-ning tools and post-secondary funding options. Guide Link: http://publications.gov.sk.ca/details.cfm?p=85923

DRIVER EDUCATION Because of the large number of students requesting Driver Education and the limited spaces available, classes will be filled according to the student’s date of birth. There are approximately 5 classes scheduled throughout the school year. Class lists will be posted in the school 1-2 weeks prior to the start date.

INTERNET/WIRELESS SERVICES ACCEPTABLE USE

(PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS 2019 - 2020 SCHOOL YEAR)

Saskatoon Public Schools believe that the use of the Internet and/or personal digital devices supports relevant and challenging life-long learning for our students. All activity conducted on hardware owned by Saskatoon Pub-lic Schools is logged. Activity logs may be viewed and used where necessary to ensure our Administrative Proce-dure 140 – “Computer/Online Services Acceptable Use” is followed. To support additional learning opportunities, Saskatoon Public Schools has also provided Internet wireless access in all schools and initiated broad education efforts related to “Digital Citizenship in the 21st Century”. Students are provided with individualized computer accounts and passwords to access computers and online/wireless ser-vices to support their learning. Students who elect to bring personal digital devices to school have the ability to access the Internet with their account. This access is subject to the school’s overall rules regarding personal digital devices. Examples of personal digital devices include cell phones, smart phones, MP3 players, Ipods, Ipads, and notebook computers.

When using digital devices, students must adhere to the following principles: Digital devices are to be used to enhance the learning that takes place in schools. They are not to disrupt that learning.

1. Access to the Internet and wireless services, either with school division or personal digital devices is an

individual privilege enjoyed by students, not a right.

2. A student's conduct on the Internet and wireless services, either with school division or personal digital devices, is governed by the same expectations which guide his or her behaviour at school.

3. In elementary schools, access to the Internet with school division digital devices is provided only when students are supervised.

4. In collegiates, students may access the Internet with school division digital devices without supervision.

5. If students choose to bring personal digital devices to school (at both the elementary and secondary level) they can access the Internet (whose sites have been filtered as per point 7 below) without supervision during non-instructional time (e.g. lunch hour, before or after class). During instructional time they can access the Internet with their teacher’s permission.

6. Students who choose to bring personal digital devices to school should be aware of the following: “In the event the digital device is used in an inappropriate manner, (or inappropriate use is suspected), the digital device itself can be confiscated and may be searched by a member of the school’s administrative team. If parents/students do not agree with this condition students should not bring the digital device to school.”

7. Saskatoon Public Schools actively blocks access to inappropriate Internet sites. If a student deliberately seeks to access inappropriate material or uses the computer services provided in a malicious manner, the conse-quences are governed by the Saskatoon Public Schools’ Administrative Procedure 140 – “Computer/Online Services Acceptable Use” - which can be found on the Saskatoon Public Schools’ public website at www.spsd.sk.ca/files/board/AdministrativeProceduresManual.pdf. Consequences are outlined in Administra-tive Procedure 140 and appear in the student version of the procedure as follows: What can happen to me if I break the rules? I won’t be able to use the computers; I might be disciplined; I might have to pay for what I broke; the police may be called.

8. If you do not want your son/daughter to access the Internet at school, please contact the school and request the Internet Use Denial Form. This form is then signed by the parent or guardian and returned to the school.

Schools are not responsible for the theft or loss of personal digital devices

that students may choose to bring to school.

German Exchange The Saskatoon Public Schools willoffer a one-month exchange with Germany. Students will travel to Germany at the end of June (2020) for one month, and host their partners here the following September. Grade 11 students who are interested should see Mr. Funk for further information and application forms, which are due by September 27, 2019.

Japan Exchange 2020 In the 2019-2020 school year Saskatoon Public Schools is again offering a two-week exchange program dur-ing the Easter break. This year the exchange group with 20 students from Saskatoon Public Schools will be visiting our partner schools in Takaoka and Kitahiroshima. The students will also have a cultural tour around Tokyo and Kyoto area. They will live with Japanese host families - not as tourists, but as members of the Japanese families - which gives our students the opportunity to enrich their understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture and traditions. They can also practice and improve their fluency in the Japanese language. It is considered an asset, but is not a requirement to be either taking or have taken Japanese to be accepted for the ex-change. However, the participants who are accepted for the exchange will be offered a special Japanese course before they leave. The estimated cost for the exchange is $3,900 if there are 20 students. This includes transportation, cancellation and out-of-country medical and accident insurance, and chaperone expenses. Not included in this fee are personal expenses, such as, spending money, passports, etc. Information packages will be ready to be picked up from the contact teachers at each school starting the first

week of the new school year. Please check the posters around your school and student notices for the contact teacher information!

Application form deadline for the Japan Exchange 2020 is:

Friday, September 27, 2019
