He Maimai Aroha – R.I.P. Amber-Lee Lawrie It has been a privilege to have had Amber-Lee as a student at Waiuku College and more notably as our Deputy Head Girl in 2016. She was always an outstanding student academically with frequent acknowledgement as an excellence student. Probably her greatest legacy will be our memory of her human qualies which shone through so powerfully in her me with us. Strength, determinaon, posi- vity and atude. Love, caring, sharing and giving. Intelligence - emoonal and intellectual. And a smile that made life-long friends and melted hearts. Sports Awards My thanks to the amazing community support we had for our recent Sports Awards celebration and my congratulations to all the students who received awards, and of course, in particular to the recipient of our top award - the Sportsperson of the year. This went to Savarna Asafo-Tavita.

Savarna has been an outstanding athlete, sports person and student in her time at the college and is fully deserving of this award.

Restricted Licenses We ask that parents monitor student drivers with restricted licences who may be illegally taking other student passengers to and from school. We will be contacting parents of student who are causing us concerns with this practice.

Enrolment 2017 & BYOD Enrolment of Year 8 students is almost completed and we had a successful and well attending Open Evening on Wednesday October 12th. We got some good feedback from parents that mainly said I talked too long!

BYOD extends to Year 11 next year with all students in Years 9, 10 and 11 required to have a personal device. Recent improvements to our network have dramatically improved our internet speeds and wireless coverage and effectiveness. My thanks to our amazing IT manager - Grant Taylor who has driven so much improvement in this area.

Year 10 laptop upgrades - Year 10 students who purchased the original Acer laptops may want to consider upgrading their computers with a solid state hard drive. This can make a big improvement to boot up time and processing speed. Grant is offering to install these hard drives to students who bring their devices to him and pay for (see below) the new hard drive at the office. This can also be done at the start of the year as the technicians will be on site for 2 weeks in January before school starts.

Overseas Trips - Japan & Australia My thanks to the teachers responsible for the amazing overseas trips to Japan and Melbourne, Australia that took place over the school holiday break. Both groups have reported back to staff and students about the rich experiences they had on their overseas travel.

Strategic Planning - Community of Learning Now that we have our lead principal, we have started on the processes to appoint three lead teachers across the community, and also the 5 in-school positions that have been agreed for Waiuku College.

I can see that the strategic goals for the college will become more and more closely aligned with the wider community goals as we cooperate and develop further. I will be discussing this with the board at our next meeting and welcome as always, any community feedback into our strategic planning process. As always ideas and suggestions can be e-mailed directly to me at [email protected].

Kind regards

Tom Vanderlaan

NCEA - Key Points to Remember This year’s NCEA examinations run from Wednesday 9 November to Friday 2nd December. Morning exams start at 9:30 am and afternoon exams at 2:00 pm. Students should arrive 30 minutes before their first exam and 20 minutes before all other exams. Students who arrive more than 30 minutes after the start of the exam will not be allowed in. Students must wear proper school uniform. If they are not in uniform they will not be allowed into the exams.

All senior students, except those who are not doing exams, have been given a copy of their Admission Slip. This sets out the date and time of their exams. (You can also refer to the timetable - in this newsletter.) Students will be given their original Admission Slip when they attend their first exam. They must take great care of their Admission Slip because they will not be allowed to sit their exams without it. If they lose their slip they must see Mr Ditchburn who can provide them with an official copy.

Students have also received a copy of the 2016 National External Assessment - Instructions and Information for Candidates leaflet. This leaflet provides more information about the exams and exam rules.

Derived Grades

Under certain circumstance, if a student is unable to sit an exam they can apply for a Derived Grade. The most common reason is illness, in which case the student will need to produce a medical certificate stating that they were too ill to sit the exam, or that their illness may have affected their ability to perform to the best of their ability. Students can also apply if they are bereaved shortly before or during the exams. In all cases students, or their parent(s)/caregiver(s) should contact Mr Ditchburn for further advice, either e-mail [email protected] or phone 235 8139 ext. 220.

Results

Exam results are released in mid-January. Students can either log into the NZQA website (www.nzqa.govt.nz) to view their results, or they can order a Results Notice which will be posted to them. Students wanting to receive their Results Notice should order it online via the NZQA website before the end of December. Students who have paid their fees can also order one free copy of their Record of Achievement and NCEA Certificate.

CHOPPED NZ - We are so proud of you! As you may have already heard, CHOPPED NZ is a Lions Foun-dation Young Enterprise Scheme Business which is being run by five Waiuku College students. Back in June we competed in the Regional Dragon Den finals after being selected from the initial rounds, and took home first place. Last month we were told that we had made it through to the Regional Awards. These took place last Friday at AUT City's Campus.

At the regional awards, early in the night, we were awarded an Excellence in Innovation and Sustainability award before heading out to mix and mingle with the companies from the other four Auckland regions. After light refreshments and a handful of speeches the National Excellence Awards and Regional Company of the Year were announced. This was the moment we had all been waiting for. Had our hard work paid off? The answer was yes! CHOPPED NZ had been awarded the Regional Company for the Year for South Auckland.

So what's happening now? Now, while working around exams we are aiming to create one more batch of boards, along with creating a Dragons Den pitch worthy for a National title. With this we will be heading down to Wellington early December to pitch our business model to a series of national business people in competition for the Company of the Year 2016 title.

Many thanks to everyone who has put their head 'on the chopping block' and supported us throughout the year in our business journey.

Watch this space!

JAPAN TRIP REPORT BACK On 23rd September, 13 students, Ms Linnen and Mr Robin-son set out for a 16 day trip to Japan. The goals were for the students to learn and experience Japanese culture first-hand, and to have the opportunity to interact with Japanese students their age and practise their Japanese.

We arrived in Tokyo, spent 2 nights there and then moved on to Jin-Ai Girls’ High school in Fukui. The students home stayed with students from the school and attended Jin-Ai, where they had lots of interactions and hands on cultural experiences, such as calligraphy, making traditional Japanese sweets, tea ceremony etc.

From there, we travelled to Kyoto and visited several temples and a castle and also made a day trip to Nara, where we went to the deer park and saw the biggest Buddha in japan.

After Kyoto came Hiroshima. There we visited the Peace Park Museum and park. This was a great history lesson and a very sobering experience. We also travelled to Miyajima, which is an island near Hiroshima.

Finally, we returned to Tokyo, where we saw the Imperial Palace, electrical goods area and Asakusa in downtown Tokyo. To wrap up the trip the students got to visit Tokyo Disneyland. VIEW ROAD SCHOOL ART EXHIBITION

This is held every second year in our school hall and is a display of artwork from the year 7 & 8 technology students from: Aka Aka, Awhitu, Glenbrook, Otaua, Pukeoware, Sandspit, Waipipi, Waiuku Primary and View Road schools.

The quality is really great and Ms Sue Walsham and the students have put a lot of time and energy into it.

The Exhibition will be open during the following times:

Wed 26th - Fri 28th Oct: 8:30am - 4:30pm

Sat 29th Oct: 9:30am - 4:00pm

Mon 31st Oct - Thurs 3rd Nov: 8:30am - 4:30pm

Fri 4th Nov: 8:30am - 2:00pm
