Dear Woodland Families! Welcome to 2018! I have enjoyed having all of our students back and the energy they brought with them for learning. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season with your friends and families, and that you too are off to a great start in 2018. The students came back ready to learn, and we are ready to engage in great learning experiences with them. With that, I cannot believe we are approaching the final days of the first semester. The year is going fast! As we enter 2018, we often create resolutions for the new year. At Woodland Elementary School, our “resolution” is really more of a “continuation” of our core beliefs and philosophy. We are proud to be a con- tinuous improvement school. That means that while we are most definitely proud of our accomplishments and strong academic achievement, we continually look to improve. Each day our teachers collaborate around student learning, so that they can diagnose what very specifically each child needs to advance his or her learning. This daily conversation and focus is what gives your children what they need, when they need it. Beyond academics, our teachers and pupil service team continually collaborate on the social, emo- tional, and behavioral needs of our students, again so that we can get support to students when they need it. This continuous improvement mindset is what propels our school to make our great things even great- er. 2018 will bring this mindset each day and we are excited about that! As we approach our “midpoint” of the school year, I am often asked by parents how they can best support their children at home. Today, now more than ever, children are busy. Between athletic practices, piano lessons, scouts, and other organized activities, students often leave the busy school day and go right to these other activities. Beyond the traditional homework that comes home a few days each week, I encour- age all parents to continue reading to, and with, your children. Consider designating a time each night in which all members of the family read. It doesn’t matter how old your children are, as the best way to im- prove their literacy skills is to practice. This also shows our children how much we enjoy reading and writ- ing, which oftentimes motivates them to practice on their own as well. For writing, ask your kids to help write a grocery list, send a card to a friend or relative, or even label items in a cupboard. When kids find purpose in their reading and writing, they will continue to refine their skills, just like we do with a sport, musi- cal instrument, or really any task. Beyond all that, simply ask them about their day, so they can engage in dialogue with you about their learning. As always, please reach out to your teachers with any specific con- cerns or questions you have about your child’s learning. Connued on Page Two

In the next few days and weeks, we have several exciting events for our students. On January 12th we have a “Movie Night” sponsored by our PTO. This is a great opportunity to have your children be part of a safe social event with their peers. Last year’s “Movie Night” was a hit and I would love to see even more families stop on out! This same day also happens to be our next spirit day, which is “Pajama or Comfy Clothes Day.” On January 30th, we have our next Skate Night. These are always fun evenings as well as they break up the cold weather days that force us to stay inside. Lastly, on February 2nd, Woodland Elementary will be hosting the annual Win-ter Carnival. This is a fun day for our students and gives us the opportunity to emphasize our community values through engaging and fun activities. We are continually grateful for the strong and supportive PTO that we have at Woodland. This amazing partnership is part of our equation for success! Thank you so much to all of you who help out, volunteer, or support in the many ways that you do!

It is hard to believe that we will soon be heading into the Spring Semester. I am looking forward to the coming months of learning at Woodland! As always, my door is open and I welcome you to stop by, email us, or call anytime that you have questions, comments, or concerns. Take care and stay safe this winter! Sincerely,

Timothy M. Doleysh, Ph.D.

BOOK SWAP

MUSIC NOTES

Mark your calendars! 3rd and 4th grade will be having their spring concert on Thursday, March 8th at 1:30

pm and 6:30 pm. 5K will be having their spring concert on Friday, March 9th

at 2:30 pm.

Woodland Elementary School will be holding its next book swap on Wednesday, January 31st. A book swap is an event where students bring in a used book to donate and

they get to take a “new to them” book home to keep. This is an optional activity. Volunteers are needed to help make this happen. Please look for the volunteer sigh up genius that will be sent out next week. Thank you!

The PTO is sponsoring a new reading program through the Green Bay Packers, Tundra Tales Reading Program. The program will run from January 22nd through March 25th. Incentives will be given out to those students that meet the reading requirements each week and stu-dents completing the program will receive a free ticket to the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. Please see the attached letter for more details. Weekly reading logs are also at-tached. Hard copies are available in the elementary office. Happy Reading!

Winter is here! If weather conditions dictate that there will be no school, a de-

cision to keep the schools closed is usually made by 6:30 AM. Parents with

students in school receive a direct call, text and/or email from our auto-call

system since that is the fastest way to communicate with thousands of par-

ents at one time. As a reminder: If you have a new phone number or email

address, please update your information in the Infinite Campus parent portal

or contact your school’s secretary to update the portal.

Announcements are also sent to local T.V. and radio stations, please tune to local stations such as these

rather than call the school directly: WAPL-105.7FM, WHBY-1150AM, WKFX-104.9FM, WEMI-91.9 FM,

WGEE-1360 AM, and WOZZ-93.5FM; and WBAY-TV2, WFRV-TV5, WGBA-TV26, and WLUK-FOX11. If

other school events, such as concerts or sporting events are also cancelled because of weather, they are

typically communicated through these stations as well.

The District’s website and Facebook page are not our primary way to communicate school closures, so we

ask parents to listen to the auto-call messages or tune in to the radio and T.V. stations listed for the timeli-

est updates. Please note that both Woodland Elementary and Intermediate offices will be closed on snow

days.

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT - DESPICABLE ME 3

Don’t forget it is Family Movie Night this Fri-day, January 12th. “Despicable Me 3” will be showing in the gym. Doors open at 6:10 pm and the movie starts at 6:30 pm. Kids can wear their pajamas and bring a sleeping bag or blanket. Popcorn will be donated by Tom’s Drive In. Please bring your own water bottle. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Box Top competition is on and will be happening throughout January! Not only do the box tops earn money for the school, also the class bring-ing in the most box tops will win a prize! You can help make the counting easier by cutting them out on the dotted lines (the box top company is very strict about this) and put them in groups of 50 into Ziploc bags. Also, expired box tops are not eligible. Thank you!

REPORT CARDS - INFINITE CAMPUS

As we approach the end of the second quarter, please be aware that the “Grades” tab in Infinite Campus

will be closed to parents starting on January 12th and opening again on January 26th after 5:00 pm. Closing

the “Grades” tab allows teachers the opportunity to enter student grades and create the progress reports.

On January 26th you can access your child’s report card via Infinite Campus. Please note that when re-

viewing your student’s report card, teacher comments do not show up in the portal when looking at the

main Grades screen. They do, however, if you access the Reports screen. From there, you can generate

a report card in pdf format that will have all the comments. If you need to set up your parent portal account

in Infinite Campus, please click here.

Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition week is the week of January 22nd. Dedi-

cated adult crossing guards provide an invaluable service in helping to ensure that

students in the Kimberly Area School District get safely to and from school everyday,

often times during peak traffic hours and in harsh weather. Please take a moment

to thank a crossing guard that you may know.

PBIS Update

PBIS at Woodland

PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. It is a process which focuses on improving our school's ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. PBIS includes school-wide methods and practices intended for all students and staff to build a positive school culture. It is a team-based process for systematic problem solving, planning, and assessment. This approach creates a safe and productive learning environment for teachers and students with few disruptions. PBIS helps students understand what is expected of them, gives teachers a framework for acknowledgement and consequences and enables administrators to use data – rather than gut reactions – to make decisions about discipline. (Wisconsin PBIS Network).

Wolfie Wednesdays

Students who go above and beyond our school wide expectations can earn Wolfie Wednesdays. These are green slips that are put into prize buckets for a special drawing. Students can earn pizza parties, the principal’s chair, or an opportunity to do the announcements. There’s also a mystery bucket where the kids can earn a fun surprise!

Winter Carnival

The Winter Carnival is a celebration of our students success around PBIS. This year we will have an Olympic theme. We are looking for several parent volunteers from each classroom to help this fun event run smoothly. Look for more information from your child’s classroom teacher. Thanks in advance for your help!
