First of all, we would like to thank the teachers and students from St. Mary’s Academy, Bay View in East Providence, Shea High School in Pawtucket and Tolman High School in Pawtucket for their contributions to our Annual Invitational Exhibition. If you haven’t seen this show yet, it will be on display at the gallery through August 7th. I would also like to remind everyone about our first fundraiser in August! I am so excited about this show. I hope that everyone will attend the Exhibition Party, and donate some art for the community to buy at a low cost. is is a great opportunity to get artists of all ages and levels of success to exhibit in an art gallery together, while helping support one of the oldest watercolor organizations in America. We hope this show will bring artists together by showcasing their talent and shared passion in one location. Our goal is to take in and hang 1,000 works on paper, so please help us reach this achievement. We will be accepting artwork during the entire month of July, and artists may donate an unlimited number of works on paper that are 9 x 12” or smaller. No mats or frames! What a great way to clean out your studios to make room for new creations, while giving to a good cause! All pieces donated to RIWS for this exhibit will be hung and sold for $20 each, giving locals an opportunity to buy an original piece of art at a very affordable price, yet another good reason to come by and help us “Celebrate RIWS with 1,000 Works on Paper”. is exhibition is scheduled from August 9th – September 4th. e Exhibition Party will be held on Saturday, August 16th from 5pm – 8pm. is will not be the typical opening reception you are used to. Aside from the gallery walls being showered by hundreds of beautiful works on paper, there will also be a Summer BBQ buffet for guests to enjoy, which will be catered by B&M Catering right here in Pawtucket, as well as live musical entertainment at 6:30pm by singer/songwriter James Dalton (Visit his website at www.reverbnation.com/jamesdalton). ere will also be a silent auction of pieces that were generously donated to the gallery by a few of our class and workshop instructors, including, Jerry Aissis, Ben Macomber, and Bob Noreika! We also have many items to be raffled off, such as gift certificates for our fall classes, a day in Richard Harrington’s Abstract workshop in Sept, and many other exciting prizes! Tickets for this event can be purchased at the gallery and online. Hope to see you all there! Introduction to Abstract Painting with Richard HarringtonAll Levels WelcomeDate and Time: Fri & Sat, September 26th-27th from 9am-4pm each day Sign up deadline: September 19th Both Days: Members $125, Non-members $150One Day: Members $75, Non-members $85 Workshop Description: Abstract paintings will be done on watercolor paper using acrylic paints. Students may use other media as well in order to create a mixed media piece. Working in a free and easy manner, painters will use a limited palette to explore: mark-making, shapes, colors, subject matter and personal/historical references. Students will be encouraged to use their own art experiences, habits and interests to explore the way in which they paint, as well as what they paint.About Richard Harrington: Richard Harrington, a Signature Member of the RI Watercolor Society and other juried state and regional organizations, is an award winning painter as well as teacher. He has been exploringnon-representational painting for several years and has studied abstract painting with Carole Barnes, Louise Cadillac, Gerald Brommer, Lenny Long and Katherine Chang-Liu.

Matting Workshop with Richard GreeneDate and Time: Tuesday, August 12th from 4-7pm Sign up deadline: August 5th Members: $60 Non-members: $70 �is matting workshop provides an opportunity to observe and practice the basic steps needed to frame. Each participant brings a small drawing, print or photograph suitable for an 8" x 10" frame, as well as whatever tools he/she may already own. Co�ee, tea, and light refreshments will be served.

Stephen Quiller Open Demo & LuncheonDate and Time: Sunday, October 12th 12-3pm Sign up deadline: October 5th Members $15, Non-members $25 �is demo will be a great opportunity for members and friends of RIWS to meet and see Stephen Quiller work, especially for those not attending the full workshop. A light luncheon will be served for all attending. Demo will begin at 1pm in the classroom. Limit of 50 seats!About Stephen Quiller: Stephen Quiller is an internationally known painter who works primarily in water media, monotypes, and intaglio printmaking. He is best known for his innovative approach to water media painting: watercolor, gouache, acrylic, casein and their combinations, and for his use of color. �rough his painting, he has become a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain National Water Media, and Society for Painters in Acrylic and Casein, among others. In 1997, he received the Greathouse medal and cash award in the 130th American Watercolor Society exhibition.

�is year RIWS is hosting a regional competition instead of anational. Acceptance into this show counts towards Signature

Membership. Please refer to the bylaws on the website for more information about membership.

RIWS will be accepting donations for “Celebrating the Rhode Island Watercolor Society with 1,000 Works on Paper” for the entire month of July. Works can be drawings or paintings on paper (unframed, unmatted)

that are 9x12” or smaller. All work will be sold for $20 during this fundraiser, and will bene�t RIWS to �nance future exhibitions, classes, workshops, demos, and the daily operation of the gallery. Artists may submit an unlimited number of works. Please note changes in dates

“Points of Interest” by Richard Harrington

Richard Harrington will also be giving an abstract painting demonstration on Saturday, September 13th during the Pawtucket Fall Arts Festival. �e demo will begin at 1pm in the classroom and will be free and open to the public.

Stephen Quiller will be teaching a “Color and Watermedia” workshop at RIWS from October 13th-17th. �is workshop is currently full, but contact the gallery if you would like to be put on the waitlist.

�e Pawtucket Fall Arts Fesitval comes to Slater Park on September 13th & 14th!

RIWS will be open to the public both days from 11-5. In addition to Richard Harrington’s demo,we would like to o�er Plein Air painting, additional artwork to sell, and craft tables for the

About William Heydt: William Heydt was born in 1949 and grew up in New York. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where he began visiting Newport and enjoying the ambiance of this historic city. After traveling extensively through Europe and the near East, Heydt returned to the Ocean State to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Rhode Island School of Design where he worked as a graduate assistant. After graduation, Heydt joined the faculty at Massachusetts College of Art and taught there until 1983. Looking for a change, Heydt moved to New York City, where painting and photography became his passion. �e vibrancy of urban life provided rich subject matter for an artist that focuses on people and their environment. After twelve years, Heydt has now settled in Newport, Rhode Island where he currently lives with his wife and three children.

Volunteers are needed - please contact the gallery this summer if you would like to participate!We are looking for volunteers to help with…-RIWS Set up (2 volunteers needed for 1 hour 10-11am each day)-RIWS Clean up- (2 volunteers needed for 1 hour 5-6pm each day)-RIWS General Gallery Assistance at Front Desk- Art Sales, class registration, Q&A (1 volunteer needed for 4 hour shift from 12-4 on Saturday only)-Crafting with families (2 volunteers needed for 3 hour shifts from 11am-2pm and 2-5pm each day)*We will be o�ering “Try Watercolor” tables, one with a crayon and watercolor activity and another with a salt and watercolor drawing project. If you have any ideas for additional crafts, let us know!

volunteers is so that each person will onlyneed to help out for 1-2 hours,

and will be able to enjoy the partythe rest of the night!

Plein Air painters wanted! Open to RIWS members ONLY.All members are welcome to come on both days, anytime between 11-5. Stay and paint as long as you want. Painters are welcome to bring extra work to sell. Please email a list of items to RIWS the day before, or bring a copy of a typed list with you on the day of and give to the front desk upon arrival. (**Please Note: All work sold during RIWS’ Paint Out at the Pawtucket Fall Arts Festival will be subject to 25% commission. Payment to the artist will be issued within 30 days of the sale.)
