CarlaGrahamisintheVolunteerSpotlight.CarlacametotheWashington,DCareafromasmalltownofabout500peopleincentralPennsylvania.Shewantedtopursuebettercareeropportunities.SheworkedmostlywithintheDepartmentofHealthand Human Services and retired from its Office for Civil Rights as an EqualOpportunitySpecialistin2006withalmost40yearsofservice.Likemostofherretiredfriends,shehasbeenbusierthanever.Carlahasagrownsonwholivesinthearea.Sheownstwodogsandacatandthey are all rescue pets. She enjoys working out at her fitness center, gardening,reading,keepingupwithfriendsanddoingsmallprojectsaroundherhome.
Carla first learned about Fairfax Pets On Wheels from an ad in the WashingtonPostandthoughtitwouldbeagreatexperienceforherandherdog.Shortlyafterseeingthatad,shewashavinglunchatarestaurantclosetoherhomeandmetBettyNelbach,along-timeFPOWvolunteer.BettywaswearingaFairfaxPetsonWheelst-shirtandCarlaexpressedherinterestintheprogram.BettygaveCarlaalotofinformationaboutFPOW.Carladecidedthenthataftersheretired,shewouldbecomeanFPOWvolunteer.
CarlabeganvisitingatArdenCourts,Annandalein2006withherlab/chow mix, Val. Val was the first dog Carla owned and taught her compassionforallfour-leggedcreatures!Carla’sfriendscalledValthe“gentlegiant.”Shewasagreattherapydog.WhenValpassedawayin

2008,CarlabeganvisitingwithCheyenne.CheyenneisablackLabandBorderColliemixwhois11yearsold.Cheyenneisverysweetandlovespeople.Cheyennere-allyenjoystheattentionshereceiveswhenvisitingwiththeresidents.Sheespeciallylovestovisitduringsnacktimeandspendsalotoftimelookingforleftoversonthe floor. As long as there are treats involved, she will performafewtricks.Hervoraciousappetitesometimesgetsherintotrouble.IfCarlaaccidentallyleavesanyfoodwithinCheyenne’sreach,sheissuretodevourit.Oncesheateapoundoffrozenribs-luckyforCarlaandCheyennetheribswereboneless.
BesidesvisitingwithCheyenne,CarlaservesasafacilityliaisonforArdenCourtsAnnandale.SheservesontheFPOWBoardofDirectorsasamem-ber-at-largeandalsovolunteersonedayeachweekin the Area Agency on Aging office conducting variousadministrativedutiesforFPOW.Thereisasenseofaccomplishmentdoingadministrativeduties in the FPOW office where she helps get new volunteersintotheprogramandupdatesrecordsforcurrentvolunteers.TheFairfaxAreaAgencyonAgingstaffmembersareveryhelpfulandfriendly.Sherecentlybeganassistingwiththetemperamenttestingfornewvolunteersandtheirpets.
Quiteoften,it’shardtodeveloprelationshipswiththeresidentsatArdenCourtsbecausetheyallhavesomeformofAlzheimer’sdisease.Ourpetvis-itsengagetheresidentsinthemoment,andtheythoroughlyenjoyhearingallaboutthepets.OnedayCarla,inherpositionasliaison,wasconduct-inganon-siteorientationwithanewvolunteerandherdog,anItalianGreyhound.Oneoftheresidentsdidn’tseemtoointerestedinthevisituntilsheaskedwhatbreedthedogwas.WhenwetoldheritwasanItalianGreyhound,herfacelitupandshesaid“I’mItaliantoo!”andproceededtospeaktothedoginItalian.
Carla finds the FPOW program very rewarding because visitsalwaysputsmilesontheresidents’facesandalotoftimestheyinteractwithCheyennemorereadilythanwithpeople.FPOWhasaverydedicatedgroupofvolun-teersandtheyworkhardtoensurethateveryaspectoftheprogramissuccessful.Carlshasmetalotofwonderfulpeoplethroughthisprogramandhopestocontinuewiththevariousvolunteerdutieswithwhichsheisinvolved.SubmittedbyMadelynnArnold
Greatweather.Greatpeople.Greatdogs.OnMarch19,FPOWsponsoredaCanineGoodCitizentest.Thirteendogsandhandlersparticipated.Elevendogs passed with flying colors. Two other wonderful dogswenthometopracticesitsanddowns.
TheAmericanKennelClub’sCanineGoodCitizenpro-grampromotesresponsibledogownership.TheCGCtestevaluatesdogson10itemsthatallwell-mannered
dogsshouldknow.Weweredelightedtohavesomanyfabulousdogsandcommittedhandlersjoinusforthetest.Wewereespeciallyhappytohavetwodogswhoattemptedthetestlastyear(butneededmorepractice)comebackandpassitthisyear.

“MardiGrowl”CelebrationatCameronGlenJustasinearlyDecembertheCameronGlenresidentsandtheirFairfaxPetsonWheelsfriendscelebratedthearrivalofwinterandtheupcomingholidayseason,sotooinearlyMarchFPOWandCameronGlencelebratedthe(hopefully)soonarrivalofspringwithitsassociatedspecialtraditions.
AmongthelatterisMardiGraswhich--likemanyDecemberfestivals--hasitsoriginsinantiquitywithan-cientfestivals.OneofthesewastheRomanSaturnaliawhichcelebratedthearrivalofthenewsun,i.e.thewintersolstice.Inthoselongagodaysgiftsweregiven,paradeswereheld,homesweredecorated,specialfoodswereprepared,andtherewasgeneralmerrimentwithmasques,music,anddancing.TheSaturnaliatraditioncontinuedintoRenaissanceEuropewhenpre-Lenten
festivalswereheld.ItisbelievedbymanythattheMardi Gras celebration first came to North America inthelateseventeenthcenturywhentheFrenchkingLouisXIVsentexplorerswhoarrivedinNewOrleansandbegantoholdfestivitiesonthedaybeforeLentbegan.ThisdaywasknowninFrenchasMardiGraswhichmeansFatTuesdayinEnglish.
OfcourseMardiGrasisnowcelebratedincitiesandcountriesalloverAmericaandtheworld.JustthisyearaspecialMardiGrasfestivalwascelebratedatCameronGlen.ItsnameisMardiGrowl.
TheMardiGrowlcelebrationatCameronGlenthisMarchincludedmanyoftheabovementionedtraditionsofMardiGras.JustasattheFatTuesdayfestivitiespa-radeparticipantsgiveoutglassbeadstothespectators,sotoodidtheFPOWvolunteersgivepurple,green,andgoldbeadstoresidentsasthesespecialteamsparadedthroughoutthelonghallsofCameronGlen.
Accordingtotradition,theseMardiGrascolorssymbol-izejustice,faith,andpower(anassociation,somesay,tothelegendofthethreeMagi--againconnectingwinterandspringcel-ebrationsforthousandsofyears).Intheannalsoffolklore,
thegoldbeadsespeciallybringgoodluckinthefuturetothosewhoreceivethem.FPOWvolunteershopethatthisistrue!
AlsojustasintheDecemberphotopartyCameronGlenpetvolunteerswere“incostume”withtheirSantahats,sotoothesecanineteamsmemberswereadornedwithfestivescarvesfortheirMardiGrowlparade.LikewisetheFPOWhumanpartnersdressedin

their“costumes”withSantahatsinDecemberandwithmasquesandbeadsinMarch.EvenSantaClausofthewintercelebrationwasnotforgottenattheMardiGrowl.
MardiGrastraditionincludesaparade“King”whobymanyaccountswasdressedasSantaClausinsomeFatTuesdayparadesinthe1800’s,andalsotodaymanyofthesefestivalsincludea“KingCake”coveredwithpurple,green,andgoldicing.Torepresentthistradi-tionaldelicacy,FPOW’sownKathiBaker,theevent’scapableorganizer,providedspecialdeliciouscaketypecookiescoveredwithgreenandmulticoloredfrostingsforthehumanparaderevelersandyummydoggietreatsforthecanineparticipants.(Onemustassumethattheywere”yummy”astherewereno“growls”ofcomplainttobeheardatthisMardiGrowl).
Asshowninthephoto,volunteerswhoparticipated(withtheexceptionofKathiBaker)inthisspecialandverysuccessfuleventwereKathiBakerandAbby,BonnieBurnhamandCindy,LucyKernerandSusie,theSkowromskiFamilyandSasha,SheilaConsaulandPortia,MaryPortellyandAnnieBelle,KerryHorganandRiley,SandyWuandReese,andPeterKeebleandTiggy.
Thiswasawonderfulwayforalloftheseteamstoescapefromtheoutsidecoldofalatewinter’safter-noonandcelebratethe(hopefullyverysoon)arrivalofwarm,sunnyspringdays.EvenweekslaterthroughoutCameronGlengoldbeads(stillsymbolizingthatdesired
goodluck),alongwithgreenandpurpleonescanbeseeneverywhereasresidentswearanddisplaythemassouvenirs of a joyous and fun filled event.
AswiththeDecemberholidayphotoparty,itishopedbyallthatMardiGrowlwillbeahighlyanticipated and fun filled traditional eventforyearstocome.
