PLANNING FOR 2017
Over the past few months we have been putting plans in place for next year and as you’ll see in the outline below and on the following page, there won’t be a lot of change from 2016.
Class Structure
In 2017 we will again be running with straight year level classes at our Buninyong campus and 3 multi-age classes at Scotsburn. Overall, classes will have an average of approximately 22/23 students which is excellent…we know that we are better able to cater for individual learning needs if class sizes are kept around that level.
This time last year we announced quite a few significant
changes to be introduced in 2016. We are very pleased with the
impact of these and intend to continue with each in 2017. These
included:
Scotsburn specialist classes have been delivered on site at Scotsburn for the first time.
We created a 2nd Assistant Principal position with responsibility for Teaching & Learning.
We went away from the idea of having a designated computer lab and went with a mobile trolley of laptops.
An increase in resourcing for our literacy and numeracy intervention programs.
As you can see from the table on the following page, we have a few staffing changes. We will welcome at least 4 new staff, including Anastasia Anderson (prep), Sandra Davie (prep), Georgia Martin (Gr 1) and Michelle Probert (Gr 1). A selection process is about to commence for 1 more teaching position. Our new teaching staff are already getting involved with our school by attending a planning day with their 2017 team and spending time in classrooms. Michelle Noyce is returning from a sabbati-cal year and will take up the Art specialist role. As is always the case, some staff are changing roles within the school as we strive to build strong teams at every year level and give staff the opportunity to experience a variety of roles over time. As with the past few years, we have developed a structure that is free of composite classes at our Buninyong Campus. This is purely driven by a desire to maximise opportunities for teachers to collaborate and plan in year level teams. Our teachers have 2 opportunities each week to meet and plan in year level teams (while their classes are attending specialist subjects). This is invaluable as it maximises opportunities for teachers to share, is a terrific support for new staff and leads to higher levels of consistency from class to class. Having composite classes makes it difficult to organise year level team planning as it
(Continued on page 2)
means we have 7 or 8 teachers to release at a time….something we can’t manage.
Having said that, straight classes across the school does lead to greater variation in class sizes, as the potential to move children about when sorting classes is diminished. At the moment it looks like we will have some classes as low as 19 students next year and others potentially up to 25 or 26. Having 25 or 26 in a class is still fine and these numbers stack up very well when compared to other schools. If you have any questions regarding arrangements for 2017, please call and arrange a time to catch up with
Bernie.
Most parents will be purchasing an item or 2 of school uniform between now and the
start of the 2017 school year. To help you avoid purchasing anything that is outside of
our uniform policy, a copy of our uniform brochure is attached.

Most would be aware that the decision was taken earlier in the year to use Buninyong’s share of the concert profits to improve the toilets. A team was established to look at the current situation and decide what works could be undertaken with the funds available to bring about the best possible results.
Ultimately we want our students to be comfortable using our toilets and we want high standards of hygiene. To help us with this work we used the VOTS team to get a student perspective, which was very interesting. In the end, our team decided on the following, which was presented to and approved by School Council last night.
Given we don’t have the funds to do all student toilets in need of attention, we will be focussing on the senior student toilets for now. That way, at least all students in grades P-5 will see the benefit.
We will replace the cubicle walls and doors in the senior student toilets & junior boy’s toilets to
improve the level of privacy. Privacy was a big issue for the students. Maybe we’ll be able to
replace cubicle walls and doors in the junior girl’s after the 2017 fete. With the new cubicle walls
will come new toilet paper dispensers…..dispensers that are stronger, more reliable and less
able to be tampered with.
We will install a hot water service that will supply warm water to the senior student toilets. If this
is successful, we may be able to do the same for the junior toilets at some stage in the future.
We will install signage to all student toilets. This was another suggestion from the students.
They think it’s important to have signage such as….’Remember to Wash Your Hands’, ‘Don’t
Forget to Flush’, ‘Please Keep our Toilets Tidy’, etc.
We will organise for the hand dryers to be painted. They work perfectly, but look worn due to
peeling paint.
We will have the internal walls painted.
Much of this work will completed over the summer break and we are very keen to see the end result.
Mr Oellering
PHB are thankful for his kindness when he looked after one of their students and gave him a
piggy back back from the P-2 sports when he was tired and sad. Thanks Mr O!!
Last Wednesday we held our grade 4 - 6 disco at recess and our P - 3 disco at lunch time. They were a hit across the whole school. We played some great music and the students danced in their costumes or free dress. Some prizes were given out, and everyone had a fun time. I think it was a great last disco day for 2016.
Thank you for donating a coin for dressing up. The money raised helps to pay for the grade 6 graduation.
Thank you to the teachers who volunteered time to come and help supervise.
By Chelsea Moore, on behalf of the Grade 6 Disco Team.
On the weekend I swam in a swimming competition on Geelong. I received a gold medal for 50 metres breaststroke and 5- metres backstroke. I won a silver for 50 metres freestyle. I really love swimming!

Grade 6PW BBQ Fundraiser Thank you
On behalf of 6PW, we would like to thank Cam Brown and Buninyong FoodWorks for their wonderful support and help with supplying sausages, bread and drinks for our BBQ fundraiser last Friday the 18
th November. All the students enjoyed eating the sausages and quenching
their thirst with a drink. It was a great option for parents too, as they didn’t have to pack lunches on the day.
Buninyong FoodWorks has also kindly donated a Ripstick, which will be raffled off starting next week. The money raised will be added to the funds from the BBQ to repair the TV in our classroom. The Ripstick would make a great Christmas present for one of our students, so make sure you purchase a ticket. The winner will be announced in the last week of this term.
We once again would like to say a big thank you to Buninyong Food Works for their amazing help. To the parents and children of our school, we would like to say a big thank you too, for purchasing sausages and drinks to support our fundraiser.
Grade 6PW
At last week’s assembly we had the privilege of having State Member for Buninyong, Geoff Howard attend and present students with certificates for completing the challenge. Well done to all students who participated in the challenge and an extra ‘high five’ to all those who managed to complete it.
During the challenge students at Buninyong P.S. registered 2854 books…. A great effort. Below are some more quick facts from our participation in this year’s challenge.
Well done to the following students for completing the challenge.

So I a have the report… what next? It is very easy at this busy time of year to place the reports on the bench with the best intention to come back to them. Below are some tips to try when
sitting down with your child to look through their report.
Show an interest in the report – Your child will often reflect your
behaviour so valuing learning is one that will keep your child seeing the value in school.
Organise a time to sit down and read the report together. A good idea is to start with a positive
or pick up an idea from the Student Comment.
Reduce the parent talk and increase your child’s talk by asking clarifying questions like:
How does this report make you feel?
What were your successes this year? How do you know that?
What areas do you think you need to work on? How will you do this?
If you had your time again this year, what would you do differently? Etc
Work out a plan together with your child on the way forward from here.
Write down some questions to ask at Parent-Teacher Interviews.
Avoid the adult conversations in front of your child that might damage their attitude toward
learning.
Book an interview for the upcoming Parent-Teacher Interviews.
Celebrate the growth and positive learning behaviours.
Parent Teacher Interviews To support the school reporting process each semester we offer the chance for parents to organise a
meeting with their child’s/children’s classroom teacher/s.
Bookings have closed for Parent –Teacher Interviews The purpose of the Parent-Teacher Interviews are to:
Provide further explanation on reports Elaborate on level of achievement and level of progress Elaborate on effort/work habits Elaborate on social/emotional aspects Provide an opportunity for parents to ask questions.
Although we believe that students should be an important part of all Parent-Teacher Interviews, parents have the choice as to whether or not their child attends.
Modified Timetable (28/11 – 9/12)
Over the next two weeks, students will be participating in a modified timetable to enable key planning days to take place for 2017. All this will mean is that your child/ children may not have their specialist classes on the usual day of the week. Your child’s classroom teacher will have informed them of the changes. Thanks for your understanding and support in this matter.
The planning days enable year level teams to gather and map out the curriculum and learning
program for 2017. This clear vision allows the teaching and learning program to develop a clear and
sequenced goals within the year level and across the school.
This term there are two dates available for parent-teacher interviews; Tuesday
29th (TODAY) November between 1.30pm – 6pm. (Students finish at 1pm)
Wednesday 7th December between 4pm – 6pm.
P-2 Cross Country
The P-2 Cross Country was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the students last week. Special thanks to the parents that went along to support and encourage the students.
Well Done MiniLit Students
On Monday at our Assembly, Joy Hoey visited to present certificates to all of the children that have been participating in MiniLit this year. They have all progressed well and should be very proud of themselves.
Congratulations Gr 5’s
On Monday at Assembly, our Grade 5’s did a brilliant job presenting their applications for Campus Leader roles for 2017. All of the students prepared extremely well and spoke with great confidence. We are sure to be in great hands next year with these guys leading the way.
Swimming Lessons
Swimming is off to a great start this week. A reminder that parents are welcome to come along and watch. The students are swimming from 11am – 11.45am at Fed Uni.
Working Bee
A big shout out to all of our wonderful parents. We will be having our final working bee for the year on Friday 9th December from 3.30pm – 5pm. It will be a great chance for us to get the school grounds looking great in readiness for our end of year break up.
Thanks to the Buninyong Fire Brigade
A big thank you to Gareth Smith and the Buninyong Fire Brigade for burning our rubbish heap on the weekend. It is always great to get it cleaned up safely.
Buninyong Village BBQ
On Saturday 10th December (4pm-8pm), the Scotsburn campus will be running the BBQ at the market that leads onto the Christmas Carols. This is a great opportunity for us to make some money that will then go towards improving the school grounds. If you can help for an hour or so between 4pm - 8pm, please contact Laura Conroy or drop in and put your name on the roster that is on the pin board as you walk into the old building.
Christmas Hamper Raffle
With our Christmas Concert fast approaching (Thursday 15th December), a basket has been placed in each classroom for donations for our annual Christmas Hamper Raffle. It would be great if you could pop something into the basket in the coming weeks. A friendly reminder to also remember to place a named wrapped item in the box above the freezer in the old building too!
Thanks Shane
Over the past couple of weeks, Shane our maintenance man has worked extremely hard to com-plete our new path edging at the front of the school. It looks great and has certainly made the entrance to the campus eye catching and a great spot for everyone to sit and chat. Thanks Shane!

If you are able to help out with the watering and feeding of animals over the Christmas break, please contact Naomi Moore on [email protected]
Thanks Phil
We would like to thank Phil (Rueban’s Dad) for putting up the netball ring that the Palmer family kindly donated recently. It is getting plenty of use which is great.
