PASSIVE PLAY AREA

We remind and encourage students and families of our passive play area where running and ball games are not permitted. The entire central courtyard area between our classrooms right up to the office, including the undercover hall/canteen area is our passive play area.

We certainly encourage running and ball games on our grass playground area and basketball and skipping on the basketball court. We have had two significant injuries to heads where students have turned sharply during games and struck one of the galvanised poles.

CANTEEN ROSTERSHOWCASE OF EXCELLENCE

What a delight for our future kindergarten students and their families at our very first Showcase of Excellence. Last Thursday staff, led by Mrs Annette Bailey prepared, produced and showcased students from Lake Cathie Public School in a number of creative arts performances including dance, drama, vocal ensemble and band. Our student leaders ably assisted Mrs Bailey for this presentation. A highlight of the Showcase was our wonderful 2016 Kindergarten classes wowing us with singing and a super fashion parade. A huge thanks to all of our staff for providing yet another opportunity for our students to shine.

CHARITY PERFORMANCE BAND AND VOCAL ENSEMBLE

We invite parents and families to a charity performance at the Uniting Church Port Macquarie next Wednesday 21 September starting at 10.30am. We are joining with Port Macquarie Public School for this concert after two band workshops over the past two terms. There is a $5.00 donation entry that will go towards two worthy charities: Burnside Family Support and Dyslexia Support Mid North Coast. It is very important that our students learn about being involved with community charity in a direct way. Our ongoing commitment to fundraising targets is great but for the students to have to work hard and prepare for a charity event takes it to a higher level. We hope to see you there.

CAMDEN HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL WORK EXPERIENCE

We welcome both Annah Eade this week and Paige Wilkie next week for a week of work experience in our school. Camden Haven High School is a fantastic partner in education with Lake Cathie Public School and these two outstanding high school students will be great role models and mentors for our students as they assist the class teachers during their time with us.

KARATE REMINDER

Term 4 Karate starts on Monday 24 October as Karate Instructor Katrina will be on holidays. We are looking forward to hosting a major grading weekend on the 25-26 November. Many of our students train weekly in our hall on Monday nights with Katrina and her fabulous Karate School. Please call the office if you are interested in your child becoming involved in Karate on Monday nights.

Teaching Observations

Over the last two days I have been lucky enough to visit our classrooms during the process of classroom observations.

Your child may have mentioned that there were extra teachers in their classrooms watching them learn and work. Mr Garven even visited some of our classrooms and was involved as an observer in the observations.

The classroom observations are a part of the Performance Development Framework across the NSW Department of Education.

Each year, teachers are required to be formally observed twice.

Lesson observations are directly related to each teacher’s professional goals and are used as evidence looking at the progress towards their goals.

At Lake Cathie Public School teaching staff are involved in peer observations and a lesson study format.

The reasons why we promote and support teachers to participate in lesson observations are:

- in line with Departmental policies and Teachers federation guidelines;

- it provides opportunities to discuss challenges and successes with trusted colleagues;

- supports sharing of ideas and expertise amongst teachers;

- builds a community of trust through opening classroom practice to a wider audience; and

- encourages openness and sharing of practice with a focus on improving impact on learning.

Current educational research has determined that the largest, most significant impact on a child’s education is the classroom teacher.

Here at Lake Cathie Public School we work each week to share, collaborate and build our teaching expertise to benefit the learning needs of each and every one of our students.

Next term, I will continue to lead the staff through the process of professional learning each week. Our focus will continue to be writing.

It is a privilege to work with such a dedicated and professional staff.

Mrs Annette Bailey

Assistant Principal

Aboriginal Dance Workshop

Laci, Jye, Korbin and Charlie from 3/4J recently participated in the Aboriginal Dance Workshop at Kendall Public School. The kids had the opportunity to work with Sonny, formerly of Bangarra Dance Company, and Jordan, a qualified dancer through NAISDA, model and former national and international gymnast. Both Sonny and Jordan are inspirational role models and our students were very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with them. Another wonderful opportunity at LCPS.

KINDER GREEN FUNDRAISER CAKE STALL

Kinder Green has been studying a unit about ‘Meeting needs’ this term. When investigating shelters we learnt that over 100 000 people in Australia are homeless each night. We thought it would be a great idea to help the homeless by buying a street swag which is made especially for them.

We kicked off our fundraising with a cake stall on Monday. What an amazing result. We were inundated with such wonderful yummies to eat. And eat we did. $190 later all goods were eaten. Thank you to everyone involved especially two mums who stayed all day! One of our very thoughtful students also donated her pocket money! Such wonderful spirit.

This Friday will be the culmination of our fundraising with a gold coin donation on our Kinder alphabet parade.
