We are finishing our Language Arts unit on families and moving onto a unit on the farm. We have introduced addition to our students in math. 1 st Grade: First grade is working on number bonds and learning to read. We are looking forward to our Holiday Party at WUHS. 2 nd Grade: Second grade is finishing up a Language Arts unit on animals and their habitats. The students have been super excited to learn how animals adapt to their surroundings and blend into their environments using camouflage. In Math we are working on place value, comparing numbers, and word problems. It's been a great year so far!! 3 rd Grade: We have been working hard at our writing skills. We will continue to build on their prior knowledge and work toward writing an animal report later in the year. We began 3rd grade with teaching multiplication. The students are really working hard and doing fun activities to support their learning. We are all so excited to see how our student grow over the next few months! 4 th Grade: We have completed a unit in Math that focused on multiplication and have begun our division unit. In ELA we are reading, Island of the Blue Dolphins, as well as focusing on inferencing, main idea and key details with informational text. Our focus on writing is summary writing using the RACE strategy. 5 th Grade:5th grade has been working very hard this quarter. We are finishing up decimal fractions in Math and working hard at mastering our ELA standards. We have already started deploying for individual student interventions using a Response to Intervention (RTI) model and can't wait to see how much progress our students will make as we start the second quarter! Go 5th grade! Go Eagles! Reading Intervention: Intervention students have been working on the Digraphs ch, sh, th, wh & the consonant blends dr, tr, fl, fr, gr, gl. They have also been working on high frequency words & reading fluency. Lo que Estamos AprendiendoKindergarten: El enfoque principal de Kindergarten son los sonidos de las letras. Terminamos nuestra sección de Artes del Lenguaje en familias y nos mudamos a una sección en la granja. Hemos introducido la adición a nuestros estudiantes en matemáticas.
Primer Grado: El primer grado está trabajando en los bonos numéricos y aprendiendo a leer. Estamos esperando nuestra Celebración de días festivos en WUHS.
Segundo Grado: El segundo grado está terminando una sección de Artes del Lenguaje en animales y sus hábitats. Los estudiantes han estado muy emocionados en aprender cómo los animales se adaptan a su entorno y se mezclan en sus ambientes usando camuflaje. En Matemáticas estamos trabajando en el valor de posición, comparando números y problemas de palabras. Ha sido un gran año hasta ahora !!
Tercer Grado: Hemos estado trabajando duro en nuestras habilidades de escritura. Seguiremos basándonos en sus conocimientos previos y trabajando para escribir un reportaje sobre animales, más adelante en el año. Comenzamos el tercer grado con la enseñanza de la multiplicación. Los estudiantes realmente están trabajando duro y están haciendo actividades divertidas para apoyar su aprendizaje. ¡Todos estamos muy emocionados de ver cómo nuestros estudiantes crecerán en los próximos meses!
Cuarto Grado: Hemos completado una sección en Matemáticas que se centra en la multiplicación y han comenzado nuestra sección de división. En ELA estamos leyendo, Isla de los Delfines Azules, así como centrándonos en la inferencia, idea principal y detalles clave con texto informativo. Nuestro enfoque en la escritura es la escritura de resumen utilizando la estrategia RACE.
Quinto Grado: 5to grado ha estado trabajando muy duro este trimestre. Estamos terminando fracciones decimales en Matemáticas y trabajando duro para dominar nuestros estándares de ELA. Ya hemos comenzado a implementar intervenciones individuales de los estudiantes usando un modelo de respuesta a la intervención (RTI) y no podemos esperar a ver cuánto progreso nuestros estudiantes harán cuando comencemos el segundo trimestre! ¡Vaya 5to grado! ¡Vaya Águilas!

This year's 5th annual Trunk or Treat event will be held on Friday, October 27th from 5:30-8:00 pm. Please contribute to this year's event by donating bags of candy to hand out to Elementary students from the trunks of staff member's cars. This event draws over 1,000 West Fresno community members. We can't wait to see you there!
Washington Unified is excited to be partnering with Fresno State’s Kremen School of Education and Human Development on a unique teacher training opportunity. The Early Literacy Partnership will focus on the English Language Development of students by providing classes for Fresno State’s aspiring teachers at West Fresno Elementary School. This Fall, 30 Fresno State students will work one-on-one with select students in Kindergarten through second grade to improve their literacy skills. Fresno State students, called teacher mentors, will be supervised by their professors and by mentor teachers on site. The program not only provides one-on-one instruction for students, but gives Fresno State’s students the chance to gain hands-on experience in the classroom.
This year, each grade level will have a designated time and date for their winter program performance. All performances will be during the school day.
Our social work department provides counseling services that promote healthy personal/social/emotional development. Building positive self-esteem, coping with grief & loss, managing anger, stress control, and trauma recovery are examples of the things that we are working on with students. We strive to build students’ resilience skills so that they may focus on learning and have greater success in school. We also have 2 social skills groups running; a 4th grade girls group and a kinder group that is co-facilitated with our school psychologist.
In the area of attendance, our department has set a goal to decrease chronic absenteeism by 3% this school year. We work with our site secretaries and teachers to identify families with attendance concerns and provide outreach. We have already conducted home visits for 15 students considered "at risk" for chronic absenteeism. To reward students that are at school each day and on time, every month, we submit the names of those students into a drawing for varying prizes such as zoo tickets, toys, backpacks, books, pizza gift cards, and much more. They are also recognized at our school's monthly rally.
To support a friendly and positive school climate for students, we had 26 4th and 5th graders trained at Fresno State in conflict resolution. They help peers with issues around, but not limited to, fair play, name-calling, rumors, friendship problems and teasing. They also participate in providing classroom anti-bullying presentations.
Este año, el quinto evento anual de Tronco o Trato Dulce, se llevará a cabo el viernes 27 de octubre de 5:30 a 8:00 pm. Por favor, contribuya al evento de este año con donando bolsas de dulces para entregar a los estudiantes de la Primaria desde los troncos de los coches del miembro del personal. Este evento atrae a más de 1,000 miembros de la comunidad de West Fresno. ¡No podemos esperar verlos allí!
Distrito Unificado de Washington se complace en asociarse con la Escuela Kremen de Educación y Desarrollo Humano de la Universidad de Fresno, en una oportunidad única de capacitación para maestros. La Asociación para la Alfabetización Temprana se enfocará en el desarrollo del idioma inglés de los estudiantes proporcionando clases para los profesores aspirantes de la universidad en la Escuela Primaria de West Fresno. Este otoño, 30 estudiantes del universidad de Fresno trabajarán individualmente con estudiantes selectos de Kindergarten hasta segundo grado para mejorar sus habilidades de alfabetización. Los estudiantes de la universidad de Fresno, llamados mentores de maestros, serán supervisados por sus profesores y maestros mentores en el lugar. El programa no sólo proporciona instrucción individual para los estudiantes, sino que da a los estudiantes de la universidad la oportunidad de adquirir experiencia práctica en el salón.
Este año, cada nivel de grado tendrá su fecha y horario designadas para su rendimiento del programa de invierno. Todos los espectáculos serán durante el día escolar.
Nuestro departamento de trabajo social provee servicios de consejería que promueven un desarrollo personal, social y emocional saludable. Construir autoestima positiva, lidiar con el dolor y la pérdida, controlar la ira, el control del estrés y la recuperación del trauma; son ejemplos de las cosas que estamos trabajando con los estudiantes. Nos esforzamos por desarrollar las habilidades de resiliencia de los estudiantes para que puedan concentrarse en el aprendizaje y tener un mayor éxito en la escuela. También tenemos 2 grupos de habilidades sociales funcionando; un grupo de chicas de 4to grado y un grupo de kinder que es co-facilitado con nuestro psicólogo escolar.
En el área de asistencia, nuestro departamento ha fijado una meta para disminuir el absentismo crónico de 3% este año escolar. Trabajamos con nuestras secretarias y maestros para identificar a las familias con preocupaciones de asistencia y proporcionamos servicios de extensión. Ya hemos realizado visitas domiciliarias para 15 estudiantes considerados "en riesgo" por absentismo crónico. Para recompensar a los estudiantes que llegan a la escuela cada día a tiempo, todos los meses, entramos los nombres de esos estudiantes en un sorteo de premios como boletos de zoológico, juguetes, mochilas, libros, tarjetas de regalo de pizza y mucho más. También son reconocidos en el mitin mensual de nuestra escuela.
Para apoyar un ambiente amistoso y positivo para los estudiantes, tuvimos 26 estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado entrenados en la universidad en la resolución de conflictos. Ellos ayudan a los compañeros con problemas alrededor, pero no limitado a, juego limpio, llamadas de nombre, rumores, problemas de amistad y burlas. También participan en el suministro de presentaciones contra el acoso escolar.
