Dave’s Sticks for Kids program has four phases of development that targets each junior golfer: Active Start, Learn to Play, Learn to Compete and Train to Excel. The Active Start helps junior golfers with the fundamentals of movement, while the Learn to Play works on specific golf skills. Learn to Compete and Train to Excel offer coaching and practice skills to en- hance the young golfer’s game. Andrea Wilkins, whose son Nolan is an Active Starter was excited to hear about the free junior clubs that were provided to her son through the Sticks for Kids program. “The Sticks for Kids program made it possible for our son to join the Junior Golf League at Pine Lake Golf.” Dave also encourages participants to get involved in other sports. He is confident that playing other sports will help kids improve their golf skills, saying “Many of the fundamental movements used in sports like soccer, baseball, swimming and the stamina carry over to golf and will benefit them in the long run.” After successfully running both the spring and summer Sticks for Kids programs in 2017, Dave has seen many positive changes amongst the junior golfers and their parents. Many of his junior golfers have already signed up for additional training. Not only that, but the ability to maintain children’s interest has been an encouraging sign. It shows that Dave and his team are taking the proper steps to keep the junior golfers engaged. “These junior golfers weren’t here for one session, they wanted more. They enjoyed being out on the course, practicing and perfecting their skills. Most importantly, they are having fun!” The Sticks for Kids program prides itself on knowing that the equipment being provided to each program is helping educate children on the rules of golf, life values and environmental stewardship. With programs such as the Junior Golf League, junior golfers will continue to learn patience, team building and leadership skills. Dave Malone Brings Sticks for Kids to South Lincoln, Nebraska

INVESTING IN YOUTH. BUILDING THE FUTURE.

Winter 2017

How does one introduce a toddler to the game of golf to offer maximum impact in the future? Easy, take them to PGA Mas-ter Golf Professional Dave Malone at the Junior Golf League at Pine Lake Golf & Tennis Club in Lincoln, NE.

After a conversation with GCBAA Program & Planning Man-ager, Samantha Huff and PGA Professional Jeff Porter, Dave decided to apply for a 2017 Sticks for Kids grant. Dave’s Sticks for Kids program includes golfers between the ages of three and 17. With 35 years of experience teaching junior golfers, Dave is extraordinarily dedicated to our youth and offers tried and true coaching techniques, not to mention a great deal of patience.

Dave’s Sticks for Kids program has four phases of development that targets each junior golfer: Active Start, Learn to Play, Learn to Compete and Train to Excel. The Active Start helps junior golfers with the fundamentals of movement, while the Learn to Play works on specific golf skills. Learn to Compete and Train to Excel offer coaching and practice skills to en-hance the young golfer’s game.

Andrea Wilkins, whose son Nolan is an Active Starter was excited to hear about the free junior clubs that were provided to her son through the Sticks for Kids program. “The Sticks for Kids program made it possible for our son to join the Junior Golf League at Pine Lake Golf.”

Dave also encourages participants to get involved in other sports. He is confident that playing other sports will help kids improve their golf skills, saying “Many of the fundamental movements used in sports like soccer, baseball, swimming and the stamina carry over to golf and will benefit them in the long run.”

After successfully running both the spring and summer Sticks for Kids programs in 2017, Dave has seen many positive changes amongst the junior golfers and their parents. Most importantly, they are having fun!”

Lincoln, NE (Jan. 2018) –The Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) Foundation is expanding its Sticks for Kids program by providing equipment and support to 75 new LPGA*USGA Girls Golf locations in 2018.

Since its establishment in 1997, the GCBAA Foundation has taken special interest in supporting underprivileged children by launching Sticks for Kids, a junior golf outreach program for youth aged 5-18. The program

currently has 170 sites impacting the lives of over 20,000 children in 41 states and two international locations. Children are taught not only the fundamentals of the game, but also life lessons such as etiquette, integrity, sportsmanship, safety and respect for themselves and others.

“The partnership between Sticks for Kids and LPGA*USGA Girls Golf will offer proper equipment and instruction from certified teachers (PGA or LPGA) that provides a consistent, safe and welcoming environment,” said GCBAA Foundation President Tom Shapland.

“Our partnership with GCBAA will allow us to continue to provide the necessary tools and support to empower even more girls through the game of golf. EVERY girl should have this opportunity to participate in this engaging program,” said LPGA Foundation Director Kiernan Schindler.

LPGA*USGA Girls Golf, which began in Phoenix in 1989, specializes in providing a “girl-friendly” environment for juniors to learn and play the game of golf and the program has expanded to 420 sites across the United States, with more than 80 being added last year. Girls under the age of 18 represent the fastest growing sector in the U.S. golf population since 2010 and more than 70,000 girls were engaged in 2017 by the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf initiative.

The GCBAA Foundation will continue to support its existing Sticks for Kids programs by offering maintenance grants to active programs. Maintenance grants allow established and active Sticks for Kids programs the opportunity to apply for replacement or additional equipment. Programs that have achieved high participation and usage rates will be given priority consideration, though all active programs will be eligible to apply in 2018.

GCBAA Foundation Auction raises over $100,000 for Sticks for KidsGCBAA members never cease to amaze! To be in a room full of aggressive competitors that are willing to put aside their differences and come together for something bigger than themselves is incredible. It is apparent that the Sticks for Kids program is near and dear to all our hearts. Our members and guests dug deep and helped raise $100,000 to continue to grow the game of golf.

Our Foundation believes that no child should have to pass up the opportunity to play the game because they can’t afford the equipment. Golf teaches our youth patience, responsibility, integrity, teamwork, discipline, dependability, confidence and much more. These are some of the intangibles that are needed to grow our youth as model citizens.

The GCBAA Foundation would like to thank all our donors, purchasers and volunteers that helped make the 2017 Summer Meeting a success. Without their humble, kind and giving heart, we would not have reached such an impressive total.

Apply Now: Maintenance Grants Due March 1, 2018 In 1997, the GCBAA Foundation launched the Sticks for Kids Program. The goal was to bring the game of golf to children who may otherwise never have the opportunity to play by providing equipment and teaching materials to help them learn the game.

The GCBAA Foundation always intended Sticks for Kids to be a long-standing initiative. Right now, there are more than 170

active Sticks for Kids Programs operating in the United States and abroad.

After years of heavy use by active programs, many Sticks for Kids clubs and bags end up needing to be replaced. Many successful programs also find themselves needing more equipment as their enrolment grows.

In 2012, the GCBAA Foundation established the Maintenance Grant which allows existing Sticks for Kids Programs to apply for additional assistance to supplement their thriving programs with new equipment.

To be considered for a Maintenance Grant, programs must be in good standing, maintain an Active status, and complete the annual Sticks for Kids Year-End Survey. All requests are subject to Foundation Board approval.

For more information or to complete a Maintenance Grant application, visit us online at https://www.gcbaa.org/Foundation/Sticks-for-Kids or contact Stephanie Bruss at [email protected].
