TEN YEARS OF EUROPEAN

CULTURE AT LA DANTE

IN CAMBRIDGE The cultural centre off Chesterton

road is the only European Cultural

Centre in Cambridge promoting

Italian, Spanish and English

languages and culture.

We have been very proud to celebrate

our 10th anniversary this year. What

distinguishes La Dante is its popular

learning approach, where young and

adult students find a blend of language

and culture, using cinema screenings,

talks, free conversation classes and

cooking events. Children learn Italian and

Spanish using games, songs and role-play.

Students learn in small classes with native

teachers using a communicative

approach, and we offer long-term

courses as well as intensive ones, with

classes in the morning and in the evening.

Italian and Spanish learners can borrow

books and dvds from La Dante Library,

and listen to Radio Dante, a trilingual

radio which broadcasts programmes in

Spanish, Italian and English.

As the American linguist Krashen says ‘to

keep the brain active, just do three

things: drink coffee, read and learn a new

language’. So, why don’t you come and

visit us?

La Dante offers FREE taster sessions:

We would like to remind you of the Hundred Houses Coffee Morning on

the 1st Monday of the month, 10am to 11.30am (unless it’s a Bank Holiday,

then it’s the 2nd Monday.

Our Annual General Meeting is planned for the third Thursday in June (the

21st). Please let everyone know so that we can have a better turnout than

last year; it’s there for all our benefit.

Our Easter Bonnet and Egg Decorating Competition was a great success. We will be off to Cromer on Thursday 9 August,

leaving the office at 9am and should be back about 7pm. Let’s hope the sun shines! Our summer events finish at Duxford in

November for Remembrance Sunday, 11 November. All donations will be going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

On a sad note, our Chief Executive, Mary Gibbons, is leaving at the end of July. We would like to thank her for all her hard

work; the Society is in a better shape because of her good leadership.

We will keep you informed when the actual dates and times are; there will be posters up, information on our Facebook

page and Hundred Houses will also be advertising our events. We look forward to seeing you there.

If you have any suggestions for a trip or an event, please let us know using the email address below.

Prampushers – Parent/Carers

and Toddlers Group

Come along on a Thursday morning during term time for a morning of

play and fun. Based in St George’s Church Hall, Chesterfield Road (off

Milton Road) running from 9.30 – 11.30am.

The morning starts with free play, with an area for babies as well as

other areas of activity. The craft table is always popular and is linked to

the story book which children listen to while sitting down having a

snack. After this, the parachute comes out and we sing a lively selection

of songs with the added bonus of special ‘props’ to connect with the

songs. Then it’s all cleared away and free play continues. We have a

safe, good sized garden when the weather is dry and a hard surfaced

area for wintry weather with ride-on toys and push alongs. Coffee and

tea is always available for the adults made by our very willing helper,

Keith. More information is available from [email protected] or

Maria Vazquez – 07504612673.

‘Cherish Your Churchyard’ – Saturday, 9 June, 2018 St Andrew’s Churchyard, do you cycle or walk through it? Did you know

it is a haven for wildlife and rare plant species? It is also full of history

with many ancient gravestones as well as war graves from both world

wars. We are seeking new volunteers to help us look after this special

place. Please come and join our working party on Saturday 9 June

between 10am and 4pm to mark ‘Cherish your Churchyard’ week. All

ages are welcome and refreshments and lunch will be provided. There

will be a chance to hear about the history of the churchyard, take part in

some essential tasks and also learn about ongoing volunteering

opportunities. Please visit www.standrews-chesterton.org for more

information about the day, or contact Maggie Fernie,

email: [email protected].

As part of this year’s Open Studios, St

Andrew’s Hall Annexe will be open and

displaying work’s by various artists (including

Nicholas Juett) for the first four weekends

during July, from 11am to 6pm. For more

information about the artists and their work

P A G E 6

News from the Churches St Andrew’s Church The titles of some of our Chesterton Festival events

come from the rousing hymn, ‘O Praise ye the Lord’.

One of its lines says, ‘Loud organs, his glory forth tell in

deep tone’. Our church organ has been telling forth the

glory of God for 159 years. It started its life at the west

end of the church (where the font is now) and then

moved steadily eastwards until a new chamber was built

for it in 1897 (east of the north aisle).

Every generation or so the organ has needed some

serious attention – mending and replacing its tired parts

and sometimes extending its capacity. In the past few

years our organ has been showing signs of its age: it has,

to paraphrase the words of the General Confession, left

undone those things which it ought to have done and

done those things which it ought not to have done.

So now the Friends of St Andrew’s are brewing up a

project to restore and improve the organ, replacing the

console and doing some major surgery to the pipework.

The flower displays at the Chesterton Festival will be

celebrating the organ’s history and significance (together

with the church’s musical tradition – former choristers

at St Andrew’s may like to come along and be reminded

of their history).

Also during the Chesterton Festival, St Andrew’s will be

playing host to a group of young people from Joldelund

in Germany. They are Confirmation candidates, 13-15

years of age, and will be visiting with their Lutheran

pastor, Jan Petersen. We are looking forward to

welcoming them.

Nick Moir

St George’s Church It was good to

worship together with Chesterton

Methodist Church and St Andrew’s for

our services and walk of witness on Good

Friday. Thanks to everyone who helped us

build our Easter Garden and fill the

Church with flowers.

We are delighted that work on our outside area between the

church and the hall has now been completed and it has been great

to see the community using the space. Now that this has finished

we are starting to think about our next projects – installing heating

and developing the area in front of the church – so watch this space!

We are looking forward to the Chesterton Festival in June, and this

year we will be hosting a concert with Chesterton Choral Society

and Cambridge Concert Orchestra on the 14 July at 7.30pm, which

hopes to raise some money to go towards the running of the

festival. Ruth Adams

Chesterton Methodist Church

Life at Chesterton Methodist continues

to be busy and full of energy – literally so

on a Monday morning. It’s been a year

now since a ‘Forever Fitness’ class for

over 50’s took up residence in the

church hall, focussed on strength and

balance. Forever Fitness organise lots of

classes in Cambridge and you can find

information online or we have booklets

available in the church entrance area. We

are also in conversation with a local

charity, Headway Cambridgeshire,

who are planning for the relocation of

their services in the area – we hope to

be able to share more news about this in

the next edition.

I’d like to mention another activity – GB

Wednesdays. We have a long-running

group which provides fun activities for

Girls aged 5 and upwards. We’re in the

process of renewing our publicity so that

it’s clearer for parents to understand

what it is that GB offers – it’s part of a

national organisation called Girls’ Brigade

and we offer a laid back, fun and

supportive environment. More details are

available on the church website and you

may see us at the Chesterton Festival

Funday.

Lastly, we’re changing the timing of our

regu l ar cof fee morning on

Wednesdays. Everyone is welcome for

tea/coffee and a chat – bring your

knitting maybe? 10am to 12noon each

week.

Peace be with you! Ian Murray

and 7pm where art materials will be available for you to use for free. Take your

inspiration from the light and colours in the church, the many beautiful things,

including the flowers from the flower festival, the surrounding churchyard, or

anything else! All ages welcome. Light refreshments will also be available.

* As a truly local organisation we are delighted to be offering free circus skills workshops at

The Chesterton Festival once again. Come along and meet members of Cambridge

Community Circus, and try your hand at juggling, plate-spinning, diabolo, hoola-hoop, flower

-sticks etc. You might even catch some of our members showing off their skills in the arena…

If you’d like to learn circus skills locally in a safe, friendly and fun environment, whatever your

ability, whether you're 8 or 80, then come along to our home at SGC on Sundays 2 - 8pm.

We teach aerial skills such as trapeze, silks, hoop or rope or learn to juggle, unicycle or stilt-

walk – or any other circus skill. Have a word with our members at the Festival or

see www.camcircus.org or join our Facebook group for details.

CB4 Parent’s Group Would you like to meet local families

in North Cambridge? The CB4 parents' group run friendly, informal

meet-ups for parents with babies and pre-school age children.

Meet-ups generally run once or twice a week, Tuesday & Friday, in

someone's house or a local playground. There are a few of us who

take it in turns to host (but no pressure to host if you don't want to),

so it's at a different house each week. There are families from

Chesterton / Arbury / Kings Hedges and Milton Road who come

along. Many people have made new friends, but it's also just a chance

to chat to some other parents over a coffee.

It would be lovely to have some new faces along. If you are interested

in finding out more please email Julia Sang at [email protected]
