“Oh God, make all you can of my life.”

Here at David C Cook, we are in the business of communicating ideas and telling stories that will equip the church and ultimately transform lives across the globe. Every major movement in the history of the world, since Gutenberg, has disseminated its ideas, and shared its story, through the printed word. While the formats through which we communicate these ideas and stories are changing rapidly, one thing has remained constant for those of us who are a part of the body of Christ. We each play a part in the greatest movement in human history. In the gospel message and the story of Jesus, we have the most life-transforming ideas to share, and the greatest story to bring to the world.

Painted on the wall of our headquarters here at David C Cook, there is a prayer from David C. Cook, the man who founded our company. He prayed these simple words at the beginning of his ministry in 1864, “Oh God, make all you can of my life.” And seeing this brief prayer every morning when I come to work, I too pray it o en and with sincerity. I think many of us do.

So with this prayer in mind for ourselves and for our customers, it is my pleasure to introduce you to pastor and author Bri Merrick, and his provocative and challenging new book, Godspeed: Making Christ’s Mission Your Own. Merrick is a Bible teacher, church planter, and surfer who is passionate about engaging the church to join Christ’s mission as He works all around us. In this book, Merrick describes the Father’s mandate for mission, the Son’s model of mission, and the Spirit’s ministry through mission. A life engaged

in mission this way, writes Merrick, is one that truly looks like Jesus and ultimately changes the world.

In addition, we are excited to tell you about a new book called Vertical Church: What Every Heart Longs For. What Every Church Can Be., by visionary pastor and communicator James MacDonald. In this book MacDonald calls us back to the true purpose of the church, which is to elevate and honor God’s great Son in the minds and hearts of those who gather in His name. Period.

Also featured in this catalog are page-turners from two top storytellers —Best-selling author Lisa T. Bergren debuts a new series with her novel Glamorous Illusions, and award-winning author Nikki Arana brings us The Next Target. Rick Lawrence, longtime editor of Group magazine, plumbs the depths of a controversial passage from Jesus’ ministry with his book Shrewd: Daring to Live the Startling Command of Jesus. Look out for a never-before-published book from renowned scholar and author Dr. R.C. Sproul entitled The Work of Christ: What the Events of Jesus’ Life Mean for You. Finally, we feature the second groundbreaking fi lm (or v-book) in Erwin Raphael McManus’ captivating, creative, and deeply biblical Signs short fi lm series: Wind.

As you consider the powerful ideas and life-altering stories we get to share with the world together, please join me in asking God to make all He can of the work of our hands. At David C Cook, we continue to pray that the resources in this catalog will help you transform lives!

For every Christian who has ever longed for something more than the routine of work, eat, sleep, play, and church, Godspeed explains that it is because we were made for a greater cause—the mission of Christ in the world.

In his new book Godspeed, innovative young pastor Britt Merrick challenges readers to leave behind the mundane and the meaningless to join God’s grand purpose—His plan to restore, redeem, and renew the world.

God’s mission to save the world centers on the person and work of Jesus, but it doesn’t end there. Jesus, in turn, sends us. He said, “As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” God wants to continue His redemption story through each of us—as we live more like Jesus, right where we are.

T H E A U T H O RBritt Merrick is the founding pastor of Reality, a family of churches with locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Carpinteria, Stockton, and London, England. He is the author of Big God and blogs at www.realitysb.com. Britt lives and surfs with his wife, Kate, and their two children in Carpinteria, CA.

IT’S TIME FORA CHANGEIN DIRECTION

Church is about God. God’s glory. God’s Son. God’s Word. God’s presence. End of discussion.

People come to church to meet with God, to worship God, to hear from God. And yes, to experience God. God wants to be experienced, but we grieve His Spirit and push Him out of the church. The church His great Son founded. When did it all become so horizontal? Why was God shown the door in the name of reaching people?

God is reaching people. But not the way most think.

Vertical Church is about a total shift in our thinking. Vertical Church is where honoring God and adoring His Son and proclaiming His word and seeking His face are the focus. Vertical Church is about challenging people, inviting them to something harder, calling them to something deeper, something far better and more authentic.

This landmark book by Dr. James MacDonald is unlike any other book about the church. It’s a bold call to pastors, church leaders, and motivated disciples to fully embrace the truth that the church is first and last about the glory of God revealed in Jesus Christ. If you’ve been leaving church empty and frustrated you’re not alone—read what pastors are celebrating as they see their churches catch fire again: Vertical Church: What Every Heart Longs For is what every church can be!

T H E A U T H O RDr. James MacDonald pastors one of the largest and fastest growing churches in America. And God is behind it. Thousands have been saved. Tens of thousands attend vertical churches they have launched. Hundreds of thousands listen to his teaching every day. Now millions must return to what the church of Christ is called to be—VERTICAL.

SIGNSFILM TWO: WINDThe SIGNS Series

ERWIN RAPHAEL MCMANUS

In Wind, visionary leader and filmmaker Erwin Raphael McManus uses the metaphor of wind to explore the ideas of breath, life, and God’s Holy Spirit, who is the source of all life.

Is there anything more mysterious than wind? We can’t see it, and yet we feel it brush our faces every day.

In the Scriptures when “God’s Spirit hovered over the waters” in Genesis, the word used for spirit can also be translated wind, or breath. So God’s Spirit is like the wind. We can’t always see Him, but we sense His presence daily.

As McManus opens up this journey, the story of a young couple falling in love unfolds onscreen. By the end of the film, viewers will never experience wind in the same way again.

T H E A U T H O RErwin Raphael McManus is an artist, filmmaker, author, storyteller, activist, and innovator. For over 30 years he has specialized in the field of creativity, innovation, human uniqueness, and discovering and maximizing personal genius. He is the creative force behind McManus Studios and principle visionary and primary communicator for Mosaic in Los Angeles. He is the author of many books, including Unleashed and Chasing Daylight. He and his wife, Kim, live in Los Angeles and have two children, Aaron and Mariah, and a foster daughter, Paty.

THE WORKOF CHRISTWhat the Events of Jesus’ Life Mean for You

R.C. SPROUL

e Work of Christ, the rst new book in many years from renowned scholar Dr. R.C. Sproul, gives readers a deeper understanding of God’s purpose in every event of Christ’s life.

Most Christians recognize the importance of Christ’s death and resurrection. But how many understand the theological signi cance of Jesus’ actions before and after the cruci xion—from even before creation?

With wisdom grounded in years of scholarship, Dr. Sproul looks at Christ’s actions and asks: What is the greater theological implication of this event? Why does this matter to us today? As readers delve into Christ’s life and ministry, they will nd greater understanding of the person of Jesus and renewed wonder at the Savior who loved them before time began.

T H E A U T H O RDr. R. C. Sproul is the founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries and the author of more than seventy books. A beloved speaker around the world and a well-respected academic scholar, Dr. Sproul teaches on the radio program Renewing Your Mind with Dr. R. C. Sproul, which is broadcast in forty countries.

MESSY CHURCHFinding Your Place in the Family of God

ROSS PARSLEY

When God created the church, He didn’t build a corporation. He created a family.

We are not called to be consumers who ask what the church can offer us. Instead, we are called to be a family, loving deeply, fighting fairly, and bringing hope to a new generation. A true family is where we are known, loved, accepted, and ultimately, where our deepest needs are met.

Our culture is dying for the kind of community that only the church can provide—if we are living as the family God intended—protecting one another, extending grace, and loving unconditionally.

In Messy Church, Pastor Ross Parsley shares his compelling vision for a better way of life. It’s called church—and it’s a place where no one is left behind.

T H E A U T H O RRoss Parsley is lead pastor of ONE Chapel, a new church in Austin, Texas. He is also a renowned worship leader. In 2007 Ross helped to guide the church family at New Life Church in Colorado Springs through a major transition as the interim senior pastor. Ross and Aimee have ve children.

SHREWDDaring to Live the Startling Command of Jesus

RICK LAWRENCE

It’s the one Bible story Christians won’t hear in church.

It doesn’t make sense: Jesus tells his disciples to take a lesson from Satan himself. In fact, He implies that if you are going to be any good for the Kingdom of God, you’ve got to be as shrewd as Satan—yet as innocent as the Holy Spirit. A scandalous idea? Yes. Essential to the Christian life? Definitely.

Drawing on Jesus’ parable of the shrewd manager in Luke 16, Rick Lawrence explores Jesus’ most shocking mandate. Shrewdshows readers how Jesus was naturally shrewd in every encounter he had, using leverage such as laughter, generosity, and bluntness to influence a situation for good. As Lawrence reminds readers, salvation wouldn’t exist outside of the holy shrewdness of a loving God. And that’s a scandalous story worth telling.

T H E A U T H O RThe author of dozens of books including Sifted, Rick Lawrencehas been editor of Group magazine for over twenty years and is the co-leader of the Simply Youth Ministry Conference. Lawrence is a consultant to national research organizations and a frequent conference and workshop speaker. He and his family live in Colorado.

With a fresh approach to spiritual formation, Family Ministry for a New Generation inspires children’s and family pastors along with their volunteers to take a new look at what is most important in the lives of those they shepherd.

Family Ministry for a New Generation is not program driven. It encourages the leader to be Spirit-driven. Children’s and family ministry veteran Michelle Anthony comes alongside readers to help them investigate the “why” behind their ministry paradigm and to focus on the generational outcomes. Family Ministry for a New Generation includes practical examples of how to create an environment that allows the Holy Spirit to work and allows readers to dream about how to empower parents to partner with the church in faith formation. Most importantly, Family Ministry for a New Generation reminds readers that each person’s life is part of a unique story that God tells through generations. With this truth in mind, readers will know that the difference they make in families’ lives will be eternal.

T H E A U T H O RMichelle Anthony, EdD has over twenty-five years experience in church ministry and is the author of over a dozen resources for Christian education. A mother of two, Dr. Anthony is the Ambassador of Family Ministries at Rock Harbor Church in Costa Mesa, California and the Family Ministry Architect for David C Cook.

Live Tastefully studies meals that Jesus shared with people such as the travelers on the road to Emmaus, a spiritually dehydrated woman at a well, outcast tax collectors, and humble peasants. With an emphasis on hospitality, this unique ten lesson study includes Middle Eastern recipes designed to cultivate God-given spiritual and physical hunger.

Fulfilling the Fresh Life series tradition of rich twenty-minute studies, Live Beautifully and Live Tastefully encourage women to embrace the purpose God gives them in an uncertain world.
