Las Colinas Concerts A Smashing Success On March 4, 2010 the Las Colinas band ensembles presented a concert in the community room of the Camarillo Library. Ensembles included Las Colinas Mustang Intermediate and Advanced Bands as well as solo ensemble groups. The concerts were enjoyed not only by parents, but by community members as well. Audience members gave the musicians rave reviews! A huge “thank you” to the Camarillo library for donating the use of the Community Room for our young musicians. March Concerts An Early Treat

On March 13, 2010, several of Pleasant Valley School District’s music ensembles presented

concerts near Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Audience members enjoyed concerts by the Pleasant Valley School District’s After School Beginning Band, Beginning Strings, Concert Band, the Monte Vista Toros Bands, the Las Colinas Mustang Bands, and the Off Beats, Pleasant Valley School District’s Jazz Band. Concerts were held throughout the morning and early afternoon. The Off Beats also played Saturday morning at the Camarillo Farmer’s Market. All of our young musicians performed well, and we send our sincere appreciation to Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf for allowing the use of the space, and to Subway for providing ice.

Disney Magic Music Days Advance band students from Las Colinas, Monte Vista and The Off Beats will be traveling to Disneyland on April 14th to participate in a recording workshop. A clinician works with the band members to learn music from Disney animated films, they record the music with a click track and then the music is synced to Disney Animation.Attention All Parents of 5th Graders: Band Enrollment Attention All Parents of 5th Graders: Band Enrollment If you have or know of a student attending Las Colinas or Monte Vista next year, encourage your student to enroll in the band elective available at both schools. Middle-school counselors l begin enrollment late March/early April, so make certain your student makes the right elective choice at the right time! If you have any questions, please contact the Band Directors, Mr. Reese Copsey at Las Colinas ([email protected]) or Miss Trish Copsey at Monte Vista, [email protected]). Band Classes Finish Soon Spring is right around the corner…and so is the end of after school music classes this school year. The last week for after school music classes is Monday, May 24 through Friday, May 28. Plan now to enroll your child in band next year and the summer Youth Arts Academy. Elementary School Students Learn An Instrument Thanks to the New West Symphony, all 3rd graders in Pleasant Valley School District had the opportunity to try out a band or orchestra instrument. The New West Music Van, a traveling collection of instruments staffed by Rene Godina, an instructor in the Pleasant Valley School District Music Program, visited all 9 P.V.S.D. elementary schools from February 1-19, 2010. The students select any instrument which interests them and receive basic instruction on how to play it, so that they are excited and ready for beginning band in 4th grade. Our sincere thanks go to New West Symphony for creating such a wonderful opportunity for our students. Used Instrument Donation Do you have a perfectly good (more or less) musical instrument gathering dust, or do you know someone who does? Consider donating the instrument to S.O.K.M. We provide instruments to Pleasant Valley School District for our young musicians. All instruments welcome.

Acknowledgments Hats off to all of our donors. We reached our goal of $20,000.00 by having 200 people donate $100! In particular, we recognize The Camarillo Fiesta Association for its generous donation of $2,000.00, and the Baker family for their equally generous donation of $2,000.00. Without your support, our young musicians would not have the opportunities to learn, to play in large or small ensembles, and to begin a lifelong appreciation of music. We acknowledge all of our fantastic donors on our website: www.sokm.net (click on the “Donor” tab). If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to SOKM, either mail a check to SOKM, P.O. Box 2244, Camarillo CA 93011 or make a secure donation via PayPal on our website, www.sokm.net and click “Donate.” Ralphs Community Organization Program
