Half Season Cricketer

of the Year 2016-17

Open Division Sea Hawks

Welcome to our first Hawk Talk for the winter season of 2018. I would like to especially welcome all of those new people to the Hawks. During winter we get many junior players, in particular, who come from other Brisbane North clubs. I hope you have an enjoyable season. Winter is a great time to play cricket in Brisbane. No early morning rises and baking sun to contend with.

I would like to pass on a huge thank you to Mrs Eddie Mills who was instrumental in getting all of the teams nominated and registered with Warehouse Cricket Association and helping out our new coaches and team managers to get their teams up and running. It is a big job and Eddie now puts on her Hawk Talk Editors hat to produce this document.

This season we have twelve teams competing, made up of three U13, one U14 and two U15 teams in the junior comp as well as three senior Saturday sides and three Sunday teams . It will be a busy season.

We have been blessed with great weather so far so hopefully

this pattern keeps up. We all remember the finish of the summer

season with many wash outs. As I am coaching one of our U13

teams I will not be able to see too much of the Saturday games

but would like to wish you all well for the remainder of the

season.

Albany Creek Vs 148

Sunny Coast Cobras 7/166

Batting: Michael Castle 40

Nathan Brown 30

Steven Cawood 28

Bowling: Robert Bowen 2/7

Michael Castle 2/23

Andrew Beighton 1/22

FIELDING: Catches to Danny Brown (3), Nathan Brown (2), Sam Beighton; Run-out to Dean Harbour

GAME REPORT: Losing the toss, we bowled first and had a solid start with our opening bowlers Deano and Sam keeping things tight. Wickets were hard to come by with persistent (and at times, lucky) batting frustrating our fielders. Breakthroughs came consistently through the middle overs, with some sharp fielding and a calm runout from Deano and Will. At one point, the captain cruelly spelled Rob, who was on a hat-trick after his final ball...sorry Rob! After some great final-over bowling from Michael and Deano, we kept the opposition to 166. With our healthy looking battling lineup, confidence was high that the target was attainable. We started our innings well, thanks in part to three early no-ball free-hits in succession, resulting in 14 runs. After a couple of early wickets, Michael and Nathan steadied the ship, until a couple of sharp catches had us into the middle order. Will was very unlucky to be found short of his ground after a return hit from Nathan ricocheted off the bowlers fingers and into the stumps. In true AC style, we then suffered our traditional collapse, losing 5-10. Our tail kept us in the game through the final overs, just falling short by 19. We will need to focus on stabilising our innings for the remainder of the season and just working the ball around to rotate the strike and keep the scoreboard ticking over. Other areas to improve are our running between wickets and balls hit into the air for catches. Well done to Michael, round one M.O.M for his 2-for and 40 runs...bring on round two..!

GAME REPORT: A first up win for the Eagle Hawks on a very heavy out field which made runs hard to come by. Andy and Harry G. got us away to a solid start and then Steven and Sam came in during the middle overs to increase the run rate to what was a defendable total

Kushmika broke through their top order with three quick wickets and then all of our bowlers chipped in to finish them off. Two good catches to our new keeper Jayden. Well done boys.!!

GAME REPORT: For a change, we won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a decent wicket. South Pine opened with their spinners and apart from the first couple of overs, which were a bit loose (and we didn't take advantage of), they consistently kept the runs down. Their young opener turned the ball a mile on what turned out to be a lively strip. We struggled to get into any rhythm throughout our innings, with a combination of tight bowling and solid fielding and some unnecessary shots from us, looking for big runs. We entered the 1/2 innings break at 5-39, not a great start again, but on a positive note, we did show some resilience to get through the overs and reach 103. Danny, Steve & Corrie Mathieson made some good starts. With our battling line-up stretching well down the order, we will need to show a lot more discipline in all of our future innings. Bowling to a disciplined opposition, their opening pair consistently picked the right ball to hit, accumulating regular runs and frustrating our bowlers and fielders. In the middle overs, we slowed the runs with some tight line and length and got a couple of quick wickets late in the first 1/2 innings, but by then the opposition was 2-58. After the break, the runs flowed easily for our opposition, with both batsmen continuing to frustrate our bowlers and getting to our total with still ~10 overs to spare. With another 50 or so runs on the board and fewer short balls in our bowling spells, it could have been a very different outcome. We will need to focus on stabilising our batting and bowling attacks with more discipline and patience in future games.

GAME REPORT: After our first up win against Wilston we were brought back to earth by a strong Sunshine Coast team boasting nearly all rep players. Our bowlers struggled to take wickets today.

Due to the long weekend we were short with only ten players but I was very proud of the way we made them bowl 35 overs to us and we only lost eight wickets. Andy kept the side together and defied their bowling attack for over 25 overs and was assisted by Jake and Jett at the end. This will be a tough side to beat but it is a long season.

GAME REPORT: We lost the toss again, but were sent in to bat...the confidence of our opposition was high from the start. On a pitch that seemed to have plenty of grass and a soft belly, Andrew fell early. The innings started in our traditional slow man-ner. Danny and Steve batted very disciplined and got through some tight bowling. With Steve out, Danny went on carve a very respectable 31, including great shots to the boundary off some loose bowling. Meanwhile, Deano was starting to get some momentum before chipping one to silly mid on for 11. Will also provided a quick-fire 10. Nathan however was the backbone of the innings, forging out a great 51 not out, smacking the bowling around the park, but not without a few chances....thanks to the same fielder. Wanting to get our innings to at least 130, we ended up on what we all thought was a very competitive 7-125. I’m sure our opposition were still confident when they headed out to bat, however some tight bowling and regular wickets were making inroads into their order, with some fantastic fielding early on and sharp catches from Steve off Nathan in the covers and Sam in slips off Deano. Deano bowled with his usual fire to have a great couple of wickets. At the half innings, the Tigers were on about half of the total, so we still had our work cut out. But then there was Nathan. The conditions were perfect for him, bowling his tight in-swingers to baffle the batsmen, ending up with four great scalps. Both Rob and Andrew chipped in with some timely wickets, Rob bowling really well to keep the runs at a premium. Despite us dropping a number of catches, we had our last wicket in the back with the Tigers short of our total by five. What a great win..! Very proud of the way we conducted ourselves, focussing on our bowling attack and putting our energy into keeping our opposition working for every run. This paid off handsomely as pressure mounted on them needing to get runs at critical times of the match. Excellent application overall with our batting as well, particularly pleasing to see most getting a start, now we need to focus on converting those starts into great innings. An excellent all-round performance for our M.O.M. this week from Nath, well done..! 51 runs N.O. and four wickets is a great contribution and was a pleasure to be a part of.

Stevie and fill-in Sandgate boy John started us off well getting through the new ball, with only one wicket lost at drinks and the run rate looking ok we looked set for the rest of the innings, with Danny absolutely smashing all the round the park (and getting under the skin of the older blokes) he looked well and truly on his way to a big score but unfortunately held out at cover, then shock exit for Nathan for 0 caught behind, suddenly a touch of pressure was on us! As I arrived to the crease the plan for Stevie and I was to keep the run rate ticking and try and attack the loose balls as much as possible, luckily I got hold of a four and six straight away and I was off and running, Stevie continued pushing the runs along with a couple of fours, but got bowled by balls that were literally turning sideways! In the end I had some great support by hungover ‘Not-so-Quiet” Corie who was on struggle-street from running 1s and 2s with me in the later overs and got us to a very good total of 166. Nathan and Rob opened the bowling taking the opportunity with no Andrew, Sam or myself to bowl and they did extremely well! Both bowled tight lines and with a bit of luck could have had a few by the 10 over mark, but none the less, still stuck to the plan and bowled very well. Corie came on and bowled his 7 straight and also was very unlucky not to get a lot more with the swinging ball and of course little sledges which is always a laugh, The spinners were activated fairly early with Stevie and Chriso chiming in for a few overs to keep the pressure up and run rate down! After the drinks break, the cracks finally started to open with Corie Snr grabbing a wicket straight after the break, Corie Jnr, Danny and Big Ben came in. tobowl and grabbed 2 each to finally put the game to rest! It was a fantastic performance once again. We stuck to the plan, executed bowling and batting well, just as we did last week, great fight! As I mentioned, Andrew, Sam or myself out of the bowling line-up, all the boys really stepped up and delivered, full credit to them all!

GAME REPORT: Unfortunately we lost in a nail biter today with the game coming down to the last over.

Andy was solid at the top again and received good support from Jett, Amitoj, Luke and Harry B. The boys unselfishly threw away wickets towards the end chasing quick runs in a great team score.

We picked up some early wickets after Jake and Dillon applied pressure. One of their bats played very well and picked up 66 not out which got them over the line in the last over. The coach doesn’t need too many of those close finishes. We have one of the One day matches to go before we go into two day mode.
