reader’s digest invited me to consult on their covers, and after studying
their efforts up to that time, I urged them to better reflect the mission of the
magazine with warm, upbeat, ‘good news’ images, that have an emotional
connection to the reader. These were three of the many covers that I submitted
that improved their newsstand sales. Reader’s Digest went on to win the 2009
National Magazine award for general excellence in its circulation category.

the reaL Nurse BehiNd MercyNurse Jackie. HawthoRNe. Mercy.
Suddenly prime time loves nursing.
Yet behind most great nurse-centric
programs is a real live nurse making
sure the show rings true. In the case
of NBC’s Mercy, that nurse is Maya
Kallay Lewis, RN, who moonlights as
a technical consultant to the show
when she’s not working the ER at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los
Angeles. (In typical show-biz fashion,
Kallay Lewis got the gig because she
knew someone who knew someone.)
“Part of my job is to relate something
that happened at work—like the time
a guy came in minus a finger that
had gotten stuck between elevator
doors—and then
the writers take
the idea and
run with it,” she
says. She also
checks the scripts’
medical details
for accuracy—to
an extent. TV
requires some
creative license,
which took a
little getting used
to for Kallay Lewis, 43. However,
working with Mercy’s writers has
made her a better nurse. “Sometimes
nurses don’t look beyond patients’
medical complaints,” she says.
“Now, I think, ‘What’s this person
about? What’s his story?’”

Sure, nurses get burned out. But experts (in and out of the field) agree: You don’t have to let stress harm your health, ruin relationships or crash the career you love. When you’re at the end of your rope, here’s how to cope.

The nursing model in hospitals: Fred—Frantically running every day.
Wendy dougherty, charge nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at cook children’s Med-
ical center in Fort Worth, tex., would come home from 12- to 13-hour shifts with next to no patience
and no energy to spare. going straight from her work-job to her home-job, she never got the chance to
unwind. Back and forth, the pressure mounted everywhere, and the stress cycle was in full swing.
stress is ubiquitous in nursing—it’s part of the job description—so it’s easy to write off as something
you just have to live with. “the only prevailing nursing model we have in american hospitals is Fred:
Frantically running every day,” says lillee gelinas, rn, vice president and chief nursing officer at vha, a national alli-
ance of more than 1,450 hospitals. “Medical surgical units, labor and delivery units—all units—i see stress going up.”
yet even if stress—whether from work, family, friends, a shaky economy or some combination of the above—comes
with the territory, it’s not something to ignore. “unattended stress results in ‘stress pile-up,’” says dr. Michael groat, a

Who doesn’t like add-ing books or dVds to their collection, clothes to their closet or cars to their garage? times are tough and a nurse’s paycheck doesn’t always stretch as far as you might like. But that doesn’t mean you have to go without. in fact, you can satisfy your urge to splurge (after those long shifts, you deserve it!) and still stay out of debt if you’re a savvy shopper. here are some places to start. >

6 ways to lighten up your picnic1. Go topless. Ditch half the bun to cut carbs painlessly. A lettuce-leaf topper will help keep your fingers clean. 2. Scope out the grill. Look for vendors who use and open grill rather than a smooth-top grill. The open grill lets more fat drip away.3. Boycott cheese. Skip the cheese on hamburgers to reduce saturated fat and calories.4. Say no to sautéed toppers. Once onions and peppers are sautéed, they’re coated with fat. Raw veggies, however, boost your vitamin intake and make a small burger feel hearty.5. Curb condiments. Spread ketchup, sweet relish and mayonnaise lightly. But go wild with mustard and pickles.6. Buy lean. Purchase lean and low-fat hamburger meat, and choose low-fat or poultry base hot dogs and
