DAVIDSON COUNTY– For Davidson County, companies came to the table in 2010, but this year may be a rebuilding year, the county’s eco-nomic development recruiter says. The year 2010 resulted in Lexington-Thomasville Micropolitan Area being ranked first nationally for new and expanded business by Site Selection Magazine, a national publication catering to executives who make site selections and facility-planning decisions.

Davidson County received the same honor in 2008, Last year, the county landed companies like Greensboro-based Timco Aviation Services, Boca Raton, Fla.-based Vitacost.com Inc, Save-A-Lot food stores and United Furniture Industries.

“We were probably so slow it took us two or three years to get all these projects together at one time,” said Steve Googe, executive director of the Davidson County Economic Development Commission. “That No. 1 ranking that came out in 2008 put us on the short list for a lot of people interested in coming to the Southeast. Projects from that we worked to create relationships.”

“We had several companies that we had talked to for some time,” Googe added. “It just worked out they were interested in something.”

Perhaps Davidson County’s biggest announcement of 2010 was Timco’s plans to locate in the former Tyco Electronics building in Wallburg. The company plans to create 500

jobs over seven years and begin operation in the northern Davidson County plant this year.

Save-A-Lot Food Stores announced in 2010 that it will build a 325,000-square-foot distribution facility and employ 40 workers. The company has hopes to triple that employment number.

“This is a great opportunity for us to grow our business,” said Rick Meyer, Save-A-Lot food stores vice presi-dent of real estate and construction, in the October 2010 announcement.

In 2010, Davidson County got some good news about the return of the furniture industry. Okolona, Miss.-based United Furniture Industries in April pledged to create 150 jobs in Lexington. The company located in the vacant Stanley Furniture dis-tribution facility on Hackney Street. The company assembles frame materials, foam and upholstered material from outside vendors into finished furniture products at the plant.

UFI also signaled good news in 2011 when it announced that it would exceed April’s pledge of cre-ating 150 jobs by creating 200 jobs. The Lexington plant should be fully staffed by the end of 2011, accord-ing to Bob Cottam, a UFI consultant.

Vitacost.com in May said it would create 300 new jobs over the next five years to double the size of its Lexington facility and amount of employees. At that time, the company had already employed 285 employees at its 112,000-square-foot facility. The company bought

Economic Outlookthe facility in 2007 and announced last year it would add 115,000 square feet to the building.

All of the projects were made pos-sible by state and local incentives.

“State incentives are very important to us,” Googe said. “We have pack-ages locally that our elected officials are very aggressive with. They do it in a very unrestricted manner.”

According to Googe, 2011 may be a rebuilding year.

“It’s kind of hard to project that,” he said. “We are running low on available buildings and industrial parks are becoming full. This may be a rebuilding year to create product.

Googe said the EDC is working to develop greenfield sites. He said he also continues to work on plans for a mega-site that may be ideal for manufacturing, a steel fabricating company or automobile facility. The mega-site in Davidson County is proposed to be located along the Interstate 85 corridor.

“We have an area that is identified by numerous studies as the state’s best opportunity for a mega-site,” Googe said. “We put that together and developed that. It’s something that a lot of people had come to us and participated with us on.”

Davidson County

DAVIDSON COUNTY – From recreational activities to destinations, such as the Richard Childress Museum and the Bob Timberlake Gallery, David-son County is a hub for tourists and locals looking for a quick getaway.

“We think Thomasville, Davidson County and High Point have enough to get people to extend their trips,” said Mark Scott, director of Thomasville Tourism. “If they are here on business or pleasure, we think if they know all of the sites and attractions, we can extend their trip by a day and a night.”

One of those places that has been a draw for tourists and locals is the Richard Childress Museum, located in a complex beside Richard Chil-dress Racing’s race shop, in the town of Welcome. The museum, which features 47 race vehicles, including Dale Earnhardt’s winning Daytona 500 car, attracts about 50,000 people annually, according to 2010 figures from RCR racing.

“The RCR Museum is one of the best NASCAR attractions, even when you include Mooresville,” Scott says. “... We get an awful lot of people that weekend between the All-Star race and the Coca-Cola 600 (in May) to come through Thomasville and go on to the RCR Museum.”

In 1997, Timberlake opened The Bob Timberlake Gallery, a 16,000-square-

foot facility in his hometown of Lexington. The gallery features Bob Timberlake art, apparel, furniture and home furnishing accessories, as well as a broad selection of gifts and collectible items. Layne McCarn, the gallery’s public relations director, told The High Point Enterprise in a 2010 interview that the gallery has between 45,000 and 55,000 visitors each year.

“We have lot of visitors come through our doors every day,” she says. “A lot of those people are local ... I think the majority of our traffic comes from travelers who are being directed by picking up a brochure some-where at the Welcome Center along the way or seeing our billboard com-ing in. Our local tourism (agency) is very good with keeping our names out there and trying to promote people to come into our area.”

Scott says he often promotes Childress Vineyards in Lexington. The Childress Vineyards website states that it is “poised to become a destina-tion for visitors and North Carolinians alike.” In 2010, USA Today Travel recognized the Yadkin Valley, which includes Childress Vineyards, as one of the top 10 places in the nation for local wines.

While Thomasville, dubbed the Chair City, is known for its rich furni-ture heritage, it also attracts visitors because of its baseball team, the HiToms of the Coastal Plain League. Twenty-five to 30 home games in the summer turns out in family members, girlfriends and college buddies

of HiTom players coming to games at Finch Field in Thomasville, Scott says.

According to Scott, thousands of people also visit Thomasville to see the Big Chair, which is believed and called by many as the largest chair in he world. The Big Chair is located in Thomasville’s downtown.

“One of the things that we all know about, but we take for granted, is we still get thousands of people a year coming to look at the Big Chair,” Scott said. “It’s just amazing, but that’s one of the big things.”

Lake Thom-A-Lex and High Rock Lake also are attractions in Davidson County.

High Rock Lake provides areas for recreational use, such as swimming. Scott says High Rock Lake is a place where people visit and stay at the homes of friends.

“There’s a whole bunch of people from an outside area coming in, buy-ing some supplies at local stores, camping in that guy’s yard and then water skiing and tubing and stuff on the next day,” he says.

Scott says Lake Thom-A-Lex is a nice and quiet place for visitors to go with their children, as it offers a playground. He says roads in and around Lake Thom-A-Lex are wide and produce good riding for cyclists.

“We have been getting more people with young children there and the cyclists like to go there,” he says.

For Thomasville, city-owned Winding Creek Golf Course has been

a benefit to the city’s tourism, according to Scott. He estimates more than 250 golfers play at the golf course on a nice weekend.

“Since it’s matured into a really nice course and one of the best places around, that has certainly been a draw for tourism,” he said.

Scott says wedding venues, Colonial Country Club and 12. W. Main, have made Davidson County a destination for weddings as well. Band contests held annually at East Davidson and Ledford high schools also attract people to the county.

Davidson County

BY CHANEL DAVISENTERPRISE STAFF WRITER

DAVIDSON COUNTY — Davidson County has a lot to offer anyone look-ing for a good time. Whether you’re a tourist, visitor or local, there is bound to be something to keep you entertained throughout the year.

Here are some of the events that occur throughout the year, many bring-ing thousands to Davidson County annually.

GROUNDHAWG’S DAY

Feb. 2 is considered GroundHawg’s Day in Lexington. The spring is predi-cated by the city’s pot-bellied prognosticator, Lil‘ Bit, at the Uptowne Square. The event started in 2005 and every year since, Lil‘ Bit has yet to see her shadow and predicts an early spring. To celebrate, many of the Lexington merchants offer spring and winter specials throughout the day and some barbecue restaurants have been known to offer specials on sandwiches in honor of Lil’Bit’s predications.

SPRING DAZE

Spring Daze at the Depot, which started in 2004, is Thomasville’s own way of welcoming in spring. This year’s event is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7. Participants can purchase flowers and hanging baskets while en-joying food, live music, classic cars and crafts booths. Also, various civic organizations have informational booths. And a big draw for the event is the annual chain saw sculpting competition, which brings artists from all over the country. With more than 80 local vendors with a variety of goods, there is something for everyone. From plants to outdoor furniture, the festival works to promote the community through tourism and by supporting local vendors. Admission is free and it is a rain-or-shine event.

Also, during Spring Daze is the Civil War Living History re-enactment by The Ole’ North State Field Hospital Unit. This year’s exhibit will feature Civil War medical equipment and seven or eight re-enactments demon-strating medicine of the period. In March of 1865, the Wayside hospital was built, with facilities in a tobacco warehouse, depot and the local Baptist and Methodist churches, by the time soldiers came in from the battlefield in Averasboro. The hospital was important for both Confeder-ate and Union soldiers as a medical center during the war and conva-

lescent facilities during and after the war. Local citizens ripped out church pews, gathered straw for bedding, gathered food and drink and generally assisted in the care of wounded soldiers, both Northern and Southern.

MEMORIAL DAY

The state’s largest Memorial Day celebra-tion is Thomasville’s Memorial Day parade, recently renamed the North Carolina Me-morial Day Parade and Ceremony Inc. The parade usually attracts crowds of more than 25,000 and is an all-day event, rain or shine. The event begins around 9:30 am at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at mile marker 100 off of Interstate 85 between Greensboro and Charlotte with a wreath-laying ceremony before moving to Thomasville’s Big Chair for the parade that starts at 11:15 a.m., where veterans

march and spectators cheer. The parade ends at Cushwa Stadium, where there is free food, speak-ers, music, skydivers and presentations.

Festivals and FunAnnual Events in Davidson County

Lexington BBQ Festival

BARBECUE FESTIVAL

Lexington is known for its barbecue, and the tangy treat attracts hundreds of thou-sands to the area. The annual Barbecue Festival started on Oct. 27, 1984. The festival has become an annual tradition held on one of the last two Saturdays in October. The city has officially declared the month of October Barbecue Month, where events are held that lead up to the festival, such as Tour de Pig, golf tournaments, a 5K Hawg run and the Hawg Shoot air rifle tournament.

More than 150,000 visitors attend the fes-tival in Uptown Lexington. The eight-block stretch of Main Street is filled with more than 400 exhibitors selling something for everyone. There also is a juried competition that includes artists and craftsmen from across the country. There are five stages for entertainment that showcase local and national artists and there is a special sec-tion, Piglet Land, full of rides and games for children. At Mission Central is where the magic happens. This is where you can watch cooks chop barbecue, fix slaw and fix french fries. Admis-sion is free, but it costs to eat, and prices vary.

THRESHERS’ REUNION

Denton’s Southeast Old Threshers’ Reunion is truly a one-of-a-kind. The event is held every year, this year set for June 30- July 4, and is said to be the greatest steam, gas and antique farm machine show in the South-east. It includes musical acts, an auction, craft barn, country cooking, beauty pageants, fireworks, classic cars and machinery and much more. Ticket prices for adults are $14, children 12 and under are $6 and pre-school-age children are free. General admission includes all music shows, demonstrations and exhibits.

EVERYBODY’S DAY

Everybody’s Day festival, the longest-running festival in North Carolina, is held annually in downtown Thomasville and attracts more than 80,000 people. Originating in 1908, the festival is held on the last Saturday of September and hosts more than 200 arts-and-crafts vendors. There are games, food, rides, live entertainment and plenty of fun to go around. This year’s event is set for Sept. 24 and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admis-sion is free.

Thomasville

Thomasville is a city in Davidson County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population is just over 26,000, according to the 2010 census. Noted for its furniture industry, the city was established in 1852 by John W. Thomas as he worked to bring the railroad system through the area. Thomasville is home to the oldest railroad depot in the state, just a few hundred feet from the city’s most notable landmark, “The Big Chair.”

Often referred to as “The Chair City,” it holds claim to the world’s largest chair, which was built by the Thomasville Chair Company (now Thomasville Furniture Industries) in 1922. The original chair deteriorated by weather and a new chair was erected in 1951. The city also hosts of the state’s oldest festival, “Everybody’s Day.”

Lexington

The Lexington area was at least sparsely settled by Europe-ans in 1775. The settlers named their community in honor of Lexington, Massachusetts, the site of the first skirmish of the American Revolutionary War. Lexington was incorporated as a city in 1828. Until the late 1990s, Lexington’s economy was mainly textile and furniture manufacturing-based. Since then,

most local manufacturers have moved their production facili-ties to Asia and Mexico as a way to reduce costs and remain competitive in a global market. This caused the closure of most textile and furniture factories and has contributed to economic difficulties for a community that was heavily dependent on these two industries for employment.

The future is now officially here.

The energy cooperative that has always gone the extra mile for our members, now goes one step further. With the addition of our first solar energy project, EnergyUnited harnesses the power of the sun to supply our ever growing energy needs. Adding solar power to our already impressive portfolio of renewable energy, including hydropower and landfill methane gas. Yes, the future has arrived here in North Carolina. And not a moment too soon.

Denton

Prior to becoming incorporated as a city, Denton was referred to by several different names including Finch Roads, Finch Crossroads and Sycamore — a name that emerged from the large grove of sycamore trees in th town.In 1882, two young men J M Daniel and BI Harrison, decided that the immediate vicinity of the crossroads would be a good location for a general store. According to a land purchase from Roby Morris, Daniel and Harrison erected a store building, which long stood on the northeast boundary of where the Hill Motor Co. did stand and now the Classic Restaurant. The building was stocked with groceries, drygoods and hard-

ware — a larger stock than could not be found at any other store in southern Davidson County with the exception of Jackson Hill. The Post Office was moved into the building on May 23, 1883. BI Harrison became the town’s third postmaster. During his second year in office, mail service was provided daily, where prior it was brought down from Thomasville. The founding of Denton may be dated from the time a post of-fice was acquired and began to be called Denton. The General Assembly passed a bill incorporating the town of Denton on March 11, 1907.

Midway

Midway is an incorporated town in Davidson County, North Carolina. It is situated along Old US Highway 52 in the northern section of the county. It encompasses eight square miles and has a population of 4,399. It derives its name from its location midway between Winston-Salem and Lexington, North Carolina. Midway is part of the Piedmont Triad region and is neighbored by the communities of Arcadia, Welcome, and Wallburg.Through the leadership of John Faust and Norman Wilkes and the guidance of Senator Stan Bingham the community sought incorporation from 2004-06 to pro-tect their community and to retain its own identity. An interim council was established in 2004. A petition drive in 2005 gathered the required signatures of 51 percent of the voting population within the proposed town limits. On Wednesday, June 28, 2006, Senate Bill S1852 was unanimously ratified, therefore; establishing the Town of Midway.
