The Way Science Works

Describe the steps of the Scientific Method

■ The Scientific Method is used to solve a specific problem.

■ Scientists need to REPRODUCE experiments, so a clear hypothesis and accuracy are essential.

■ Copy this chart AND COLOR on BOTTOM half of page 0!

C.O. – SW understand essential skills that scientists need to be successful.

L.O. – SW diagram the scientific method and create a cube that represents a system.

Common Lab Tools■ Open your notebook to page 4/5. They both should be

blank and should be facing each other. I call this an “open entry”.

■ Label across the top (of both pages) “Common Lab Tools”■ CAREFULLY take out the tools. Match the Vocab term

(given) and definition (on the board) to the appropriate tool. Use BOTH pages to draw a QUICK sketch of what it looks like, its name, and the definition for future use. You can abbreviate/write the definition in your own words if it is too lengthy.

■ These are ALL tools you should memorize.■ Place them all CAREFULLY back in the basket when

finished, glassware CAREFULLY on the bottom.■ Be careful as the round items may roll!

Scientific Data

■ Why is Data important?

■ How do we organize Data?

■ Data is like the “meat and potatoes” of research.

■ No data = no results. Results are critical.

■ Data is organized in Data Tables■ D.T’s are easy to read, understand,

compare and help to create graphs.
