Traditional View of National Security

Traditionally, we viewed security in terms of governments. Security threats were either:

To protect themselves, governments:1) Exert control over as much territory as possible.2) Install friendly governments wherever possible

In short, the Cold War is a perfect example of our traditional understanding of security.

Today’s Main Points

1. The Russian invasion of Georgia is an attempt to control Caucasus oil and make Russia look tough.

2. The Cold War was a 40-year struggle between the US and USSR in which each government tried to protect itself from invasion or subversion.

3. This manifested itself as attempts to install or protect friendly governments.

4. This is the traditional view of national security
