During last nine years, more than 58,000 students have participated in learning experiences designed to help them understand science. Students were taught about rocks, animals, plants, and the environment, and they also were able to study the history of local Native American tribes. During their day at the park, students participate in activities that reinforce standards from Language Arts, History-Social Science, Mathematics, and Science. Research reveals that when our students are able to learn content standards with rigorous and relevant learning experiences, they develop deeper understandings. We are pleased to collaborate with the talented staff of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks and encourage your participation in a program that combines a wonderful outdoor education program with standards our students are being asked to master. Your acknowledgement of the importance of such learning experiences helps make a difference in the lives of many students. Thank you for supporting outdoor experiences, and if you need additional input from our staff, please feel free to contact us. Dear Parents, Teachers and Administrators:

The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools supports the San Bernardino County Regional Parks’ “Environmental Science Camp” with enthusiasm and appreciation.

On behalf of San Bernardino County and the Regional Parks Department,we would like to invite you and your students to participate in our Environmental Science Day Camp Program. This program is a five-and-a-half-hour field trip designed to introduce students to ecology and the local Native American cultures, under the guidance of an experienced naturalist. This program is held at Yucaipa Regional Park, where towering Redwood trees are breathtaking. This location, in the City of Yucaipa, offers several habitat areas for exploration and study. Activities include interpretative hikes, art projects, as well as a cultural overview of the Serrano Indians.

The program cost is $3 per person and your school will need to provide transportation and lunch for your students. Camp begins in January and runs through May for 4th and 5th grade classes. A minimum of 20 students is required for reservation and cannot exceed 80 students.

Again, we are thrilled to offer this opportunity and believe it will be an excellent experience for your students and teachers alike. If interested, please contact us at 909-387-2461.

TRAIL

OBJECTIVE:To explore hands-on, in an outdoor setting, the different aspects of the natural world; and how we can learn through science to respect and enrich our lives and our environment.

pon arrival students are immersed in a wonderland of exploration and adventure. They begin the day learning basic safety rules and guidelines, and then they can hit the trail! Who knows what surprises await them! Perhaps the weasel family is out for their morning outing, or one of the Park‛s native Bald Eagles will make a rare appearance diving for a fish in the lake! Their first stop begins the adventure as scientists, working in the outdoor laboratory. Biology, Botany, Geology, and the Serrano Indian Culture are all explored today.

At their next stop students explore plants including photosynthesis, plant embryology, and special adaptations that plants develop to ensure survivalin their special niche in the ecosystem.

In the shadow of the San Bernardino Mountains, straddling the San Andreas fault, they discuss the rock cycle, mountain making and plate tectonics. Students will be excited to discover that they live amongst the most interesting mountains in the United States.

GEOLOGY

This stop takes them back in time where they will walk in the footprints of the Serrano Indians. Learning what it was like to live as a young Native

American 150 years ago, having only the natural resources as your means of survival. Pump drills, hoop with spear use,

and Native language are introduced.

SERRANOINDIAN

CULTURE

Reflecting on the sights and sounds of nature, students sit down to lunch under the beautiful shade of a Eucalyptus tree. The afternoon brings exciting new activities, including crafts and games. Finally, and wishing the day would never end, they board the bus and head home contemplating the wonders of science and their important role in the preservation of the environment.

Students settle in at the Biology Station. Topics like food chain, food web, predator versus prey, and ecological responsibilities are explored in a creative manner that include hands-on activities.
