Breeding Centre, Hidden London & The

Regents Canal, The Sweeps Festival at

Rochester and a Historic Steamboat

Cruise with Lunch. We return to Leonardslee

Gardens, opening for the first time since 2010

and have Lunch at The Clink Restaurant at High

British Motor Museum & The Guide DogsNational Breeding CentreDepart Oxted 7.30am (Route A) for the drive to the British Motor Museum at Gaydon(formerly the Heritage Motor Centre), the world’s largest collection of historic Britishcars. Immerse yourself in the fascinating story of Britain’s motor industry – thedesigners, the factories, the workers, the cars, the publicity and the drivers. See theCollections Centre, a 4500m2 store, housing around 250 cars from the reservecollections of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and the Jaguar Heritage Trust:a true ‘behind the scenes’ experience where you can see how they store, and restore,the car collections. Newbury &Snowdrops atWelford Park Depart Oxted 9.30am (Route A) for thejourney to Newbury. Famous for itsracecourse and 2 Civil Wars, now there isa pedestrianised high street, with a goodmix of well-known high street namesand local independents, including theaward winning Camp Hopsondepartment store; Parkway, an openstreet development in the heart of thetown which features more than 50 shopsand kiosks that has turned Newbury intoone of the best places to shop in centralsouthern England and lots of cafes andrestaurants. Early afternoon we makeour way to Welford Park, the site of amonastery until the dissolution in 1536,when King Henry VIII kept Welford as hisown deer hunting lodge. Today Welford isfamous as the home of the Great BritishBake Off and for its display of snowdropsacross the 7-acre woodland site adjacentto the River Lambourn. The soil is perfectfor snowdrops to prosper and in the daysof the monastery the monks wereknown to propagate them both fordecoration at the Feast of Candlemasand also for medicinal purposes. Hound of the Baskervillesat The Mill, SonningDepart Oxted 9.45am (Route A) for the drive to The Mill, Sonning, a former 18th-century Flour Mill which has been converted to provide a centre of entertainment andcomfort beside the Thames. With much of the original structure still retained, the DinnerTheatre gives the opportunity to have a drink by the river and view the working wheelin the Cocktail Bar. Sir Charles Baskerville dies in mysterious circumstances.A look of fear and terror on his face. Upon arrival we shall visit theYpres Castle Inn, known locally as “The Wipers”, whichsits beneath the ramparts of the Ypres Tower at thesouth east corner of Rye’s citadel. (Please note: thereare steps up to the pub). We shall have time to purchasea drink in the bar before enjoying a 2 course lunch.Following lunch we shall be at leisure to explore thefamous Cinque Port, take a leisurely stroll through thecobbled streets, admire the beautiful buildings, manyof which are Elizabethan and enjoy the numerous andvaried shops that Rye has to offer. Daffodils at ChippenhamPark GardensDepart Oxted 9.00am (Route A) for the drive toChippenham Park, near Ely. At this time of year, thegrounds and gardens of Chippenham turn into a frothysea of yellow daffodils. Everything starts pushing up,the first blossoms are out, the Helebores are still goingstrong and the crocus are opening. The Daphnes are inflower and the smell is intoxicating. The most excitingtime for garden lovers with Spring in the air. The PottingShed Café converted from part of the old potting sheds,serves fresh coffee, tea, delicious cakes, their own free-range pork hot dogs and hot soups. (Please note theyonly take cash). Wednesday 4th April

The People’s PostDeparting Oxted 8.00am (Route C), we make our way toLondon where we shall have morning coffee in a City puband meet our Blue Badge guide. Our tour will include alittle walking, but will mainly be by coach. Hidden London& The Regents CanalDepart Oxted 8.00am (Route C) for the drive to theMuseum of London on London Wall, where we shall havetime to find morning coffee before meeting our guide. In1666 the Great Fire swept away much of the mediaevalCity but the flames died to ashes to leave this one corneruntouched. From the Aldersgate we make our way onfoot to the Newgate via a maze of narrow streets andbygone alleyways surrounding the old smooth field, nowknown as Smithfield. Londoners came here to watchgrisly public executions and visit London’s first hospitaland the Meat Market. We see Postman’s Park withmemorial plaques to heroic acts of self-sacrifice and SirJohn Betjeman’s town house and discover where Scotshero Sir William Wallace was executed. The house is best known for itsassociations with William Morris who chose it as his summer home,signing a joint lease with the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante GabrielRossetti in the summer of 1871. Morris loved the house as a work oftrue craftsmanship, totally unspoilt and unaltered, and in harmony withthe village and the surrounding countryside with its ‘quaint garretsamongst great timbers of the roof where of old times the tillers andherdsmen slept”. Swanage & Swanage RailwayDepart Oxted 7.45am (Route A) for the drive through the New Forestto Sandbanks and the ferry to Swanage with its sandy beach lining thewide sweeping bay. Swanage delightfully combines the charm of aVictorian seaside town with the conveniences and attractions of amodern tourist resort. The Victorian era saw Swanage come alive andtransform from a small quarrying town to a popular seaside resort.Many of the Barges taking stone to London returned with unusual giftsfrom local benefactors: the Wellington Clock Tower, which stands closeto the Lifeboat House, once adorned the southern approach to LondonBridge. Bognor Regis, aseaside resort with a pier and five miles of hard sandybeach, began as a Saxon village, became a medievalfishing hamlet and then, from 1790, developed into aquiet and fashionable seaside watering place. Rye & TenterdenDepart Oxted 9.15am (Route B) for enchanting Ryewhich, in Elizabethan times was a port, heavily armedwith cannon, but such defences were useless againstthe town’s ageless enemy, the sea. Silting was aconstant problem, and as the sea receded it left thetown high and dry. It is now some two miles inland.Here you will be at leisure to explore and find lunch.Wander the cobbled streets, admire the beautifulbuildings, many of which are Elizabethan, some withGeorgian frontages, and enjoy the superb range ofshops and restaurants which characterise this famousCinque Port whose buildings cluster around the top of alittle sandstone hill watching over Romney Marsh andguarding the coastline. Early afternoon we make ourway to the Weald town of Tenterden, held to be WilliamCaxton’s birthplace. It is a market town with one of themost attractive main streets in the South of England –wide, tree lined and full of Georgian houses and shopswith bow fronted windows, porticoed doorways andshiplapped-timber frontages. Eurotunnel to Plugstreet, the Poolof Peace & the Last PostDepart Oxted 5.15am (Route A) for the drive to Folkestone and theEurotunnel to Coquelles, France. From here we make our way toPloegsteert, or Plugstreet as it was known by the British soldiers, wherewe shall have time to visit the Plugstreet 14-18 Experience. Thisamazing museum uses cutting-edge technology, touch screens andanimations to present the British and German positions in Comines-Warneton as well as the civilians and soldiers’ life in a region torn bythe war and 4 years of occupation. Whilst in the area, we shall also visitthe Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing and the Hyde Park CornerCemetery. From here we make our way to Kemmel, where we shall visitsome restored German trenches before continuing on toSpanbroekmolen Mine Crater Memorial – The Pool of Peace. Also knownas Lone Tree Crater, it is the site of the largest of 19 mines blown bythe British Army in the early hours of the morning of 7th June 1917.This signalled the launch of the Battle of Messines. The last stop of theday is Ypres, where there will be time to enjoy an evening meal (costnot included) before, at 8 o’clock, experiencing the haunting strains ofthe Last Post. Home late evening. Weeping Window Poppies at IWM,LondonDepart Oxted 9.00am (Route C) for the Imperial War Museum, London,which tells the stories of those whose lives have been shaped by war.IWM London is presenting Weeping Window a cascade comprisingseveral thousand handmade ceramic poppies. The breath-takingsculpture, along with its sister one, Wave, were initially conceived asthe key dramatic sculptural elements in the installation Blood SweptLands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London in the autumn of 2014.Over the course of their time at the Tower, the two sculptures weregradually surrounded by a vast field of ceramic poppies, each oneplanted by a volunteer. In 2018, in addition to the Poppy sculptures,IWM will present Making a New World, a season of innovativeexhibitions, installations and immersive experiences at IWM Londonwhich will explore how the First World War has shaped the society welive in today. Discover the story of the war through the eyes of theBritish people and the Empire, both on the home front and the fightingfronts. Gain an understanding of how the war started, why it continued,how the Allies won and its global impact. 1 Bookings for day outings made in writing must be accompanied by full payment. Bookings will be heldfor 4 days pending receipt of payment.

2 Your choice of picking up/setting down point must be notified to us at the time of booking. Pleaseensure you are waiting at the correct point in plenty of time. We cannot be held responsible for anyloss or expense suffered by late arrival at a picking up point.

3 Seats on the coach are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Early booking is therefore advisable.You will keep the same seat throughout the day. As we have coaches with different seatingarrangements, we reserve the right to allocate seats other than those you have booked, although thiswill be avoided as far as possible.

4 Under British law, smoking is not permitted on the coach.

5 Unless otherwise stated, children’s fares apply under 14 years of age.

6 Should we have to make a significant change to a day trip or excursion we will notify youimmediately, and offer you the option of accepting the changes or a prompt and full refund of allmonies paid. This will be the extent of our liability.

7 Every effort will be made to operate all the outings advertised in this brochure. Should we have tomake a cancellation, we will give you a prompt and full refund of all monies paid. This will be theextent of our liability.

8 You may cancel your booking at any time prior to departure subject to the following conditions:a) For cancellations notified to us more than 7 days prior to departure, a cancellation charge of up to

33% of the fare charged will be made. Please note that where we have had to purchase tickets inadvance, we may not be able to refund the price of these.

b) For cancellations notified to us less than 7 days prior to departure, no refund can be made, unlessthe seat is re-sold. In this event the extent of refund will be at our discretion.
