The Meaning of the Day of Atonement.

Children, today we are going to learn from the Bible that

the Day of Atonement represents salvation for the world. The

story begins in Genesis.

Atonement Satan is a liar and the world must be saved from him.

Now the serpent was more cunning than any creature of

the field which the LORD God had made… Genesis 3:1

Definition: Cunning--to know, be able, crafty, sly or artful, clever. Satan wants us to be like him.

The first thing that the serpent, or Satan, did was to lie to Eve to get her talking and eventually tempt her. …And he

said to the woman, ―Is it true that God has said, ‗You shall not

eat of any tree of the garden?‘ ‖ And the woman said to the

serpent, ―We may freely eat the fruit of the trees of the

garden, but of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of

the garden, God has indeed said, ‗You shall not eat of it,

neither shall you touch it, lest you die.‘ ‖ Genesis 3:1-3

And the serpent said to the woman, ―In dying, you shall

not surely die! For God knows that in the day you eat of it,

then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be like God,

deciding good and evil.‖ And when the woman 1 saw that the

tree was good for food, and that 2 it was pleasing to the

eyes, and 3 a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of

its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and

he ate. Genesis 3:4-6

Later, God confronted them in the garden. And the LORD

God said to the woman, ―What is this you have done?‖ And the

woman said, ―The serpent deceived me, and I ate.‖ Genesis 3: 13

Then God punished Adam and Eve for their disobedience

and made them leave the garden. God is not a liar like Satan. God said that they would die

if they ate of the tree of good and evil. …―for out of it you

were taken; for dust you are, (because he made mankind from the dust) and to dust you shall return (fulfilling what God said

…‗for in the day that you eat of it in dying you shall surely die.‘

Gen. 2:17).‖ Genesis 3:19

That judgment of death for sin was passed on to all humans because Adam and Eve disobeyed God.

Jesus was talking to the ones who were practicing sin but

said they believed in Him. And Jesus said to them, ―You are of

your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you desire

to practice. He was a murderer from the beginning, (because death was passed on to us) and has not stood in the truth

because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie,

he is speaking from his own self; for he is a liar, and the

father of it.‖ John 8:44

The most important reason is to obey God because it is one of His commanded Feast Days and Jesus Himself said, ―If

you love Me, keep the commandments—namely, My

commandments.‖ John 14:15

Why do we keep the

Day of Atonement?

Reconciliation, which is the restoration of a harmonious relationship between two parties. In the New Testament the term refers most often to God‘s restoration of His relationship with sinful mankind through the blood of Jesus Christ. When settling our differences, to make peace with one another, the word At-One-Ment is at one with God. Please read Romans 5:10-11 for a good example.

God said ―…you shall afflict your souls…‖ Leviticus 23:27

―…to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy

burdens, and to let the oppressed ones go free, and that you

break every yoke?‖ Isaiah 58:6

And Satan is the most wicked oppressor of all.

But, why do

we fast?

When you obey God by feeding the hungry, clothing and helping the homeless, ―Then shall your light break out as the

dawn, and your health shall spring out quickly; and your

righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall

be your rear guard.‖ Isaiah 58:8

No evil can sneak up behind you! And these are just a few of the blessings.

. Many of the services that the priest did in the Old Testament represented what Christ did after His resurrection and what He will be doing when He returns. So, let us now read in Leviticus 16.

And the LORD said to Moses, ―Speak to Aaron your

brother… Aaron shall come into the sanctuary this way: with a

young bull, for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.‖

―And Aaron shall cast lots on the two goats; one lot for

the LORD and the other lot for Azazel.‖ Leviticus 16:8

One goat was to represent Jesus Christ and the other was to represent Satan. The two goats were to be exactly alike and God had to show which one was which by the casting of lots. Look carefully and draw a line between the two God would pick.

―And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the LORD‘S lot

fell, and offer it for a sin offering.‖ Leviticus 16:9

The death of the goat was symbolic of the death of Jesus Christ for our sins.

sanctuary and the tabernacle of the congregation and the

altar, he shall bring the live goat. And Aaron shall lay both his

hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over him all

the wilderness. And the goat shall bear upon him all their

iniquities to a land in which no one lives. And he shall let the

goat go in the wilderness.‖ Leviticus 16:21-22

Later, we will read in the book of Revelation that an angel will lock up Satan in the abyss and that is what is represented by this verse.

―And it shall be a statute forever to you: in the seventh

month, on the tenth of the month, you shall afflict your souls

and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country

or a stranger who is living among you, for on that day an

atonement shall be made for you, to cleanse you, so that you

may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.‖ Leviticus 16:29-30

your souls, by a statute forever.‖ Leviticus 16:31

―And this shall be an everlasting statute to you, to make

an atonement for the children of Israel for their sins once a

year.‖ And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.‖ Leviticus 16:34

The Wilderness

On that day we are to ―Feast on His words.‖

God said that the Day of Atonement is one of His Feast Days.

Let us now learn how God ends and begins His days.

Ending the 9th day of the 7th month.

Ba erev, ―at sunset,‖ is a period of 3 to 5 minutes. It is

the period of time which begins just when the sun appears to touch the horizon and ends when the sun disappears below the horizon.

Beginning of the 10th

day of the 7th month.

―You shall do no manner of work. It shall be a statute

forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It

shall be to you a Sabbath of rest, and you shall afflict

yourselves. In the ninth day of the month at sunset, from

sunset to sunset, you shall keep your Sabbath.‖ Leviticus 23:31-32

Let us find our way to the top of the tree so we may observe sunset.

The Day of Atonement starts the Jubilee Year,

which is every 50th year.

―And you shall number seven Sabbaths of years to you,

seven times seven years. And the time of the seven Sabbaths

of years shall be forty-nine years to you. Then you shall cause

the trumpet of the jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the

seventh month; in the Day of Atonement, the trumpet shall

sound throughout all your land.‖ Leviticus 25:8-9

―And you shall make the fiftieth year holy, and proclaim

liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a

jubilee to you, and you shall return each man to his possession,

and you shall return each man to his family. That fiftieth year

shall be a jubilee to you. You shall not sow, neither reap that

which grows of itself in it, nor gather the grapes of your

undressed vine in it, for it is the jubilee. It shall be holy to

you. You shall eat the increase of it out of the field.‖ Leviticus 25:10-12

Because of the oppression of evil men this is almost

impossible to keep today although scripture says, ―…you shall

not oppress one another.‖ Leviticus 25:14

Also, because the people of God have been scattered and are not in the land, this can‘t be done nowadays.

What does Jesus have to do with the Jubilee?

At the very end times, many people will be in bondage by a great beast power and false prophet. They will be praying for Jesus the Christ to return and release them from their bondage of jail or sins that Satan has caused them to be in. It will be just like when the Israelites were in Egypt under Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

Oppressed greatly! And in need of our Savior, Jesus.

Notice there are similarities in some things to do with

Atonement and the Jubilee. ―Is not this, rather, the fast that

heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed ones go free, and

that you break every yoke?‖ Isaiah 58:6

A yoke is like being in prison or bondage.

The prophet Isaiah said this about Jesus Christ our Savior.

―The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me because the LORD

has anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He has

sent Me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to

the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are

bound; To preach the acceptable year of the LORD and the day

of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to appoint

to those who mourn in Zion, giving to them beauty for ashes,

the oil of joy for mourning, the mantle of praise for the spirit

of heaviness; so that they might be called trees of

righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He might be

glorified.‖ Isaiah 61:1-3

Before Jesus can set the captives free, He must first put Satan away.

―Then I saw an angel descending from heaven, having the

key of the abyss, and a great chain in his hand. And he took

hold of the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the Devil and

Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.‖ Revelation 20:1-2

―Then he cast him into the abyss, and locked him up, and

sealed the abyss over him, so that he would not deceive the

nations any longer until the thousand years were fulfilled; and

after that it is ordained that he be loosed for a short time.‖ Revelation 20:3

As Satan has put people in the bondage of sin and captivity now on earth, so shall God put Satan into bondage in the abyss.

Now ALL people can understand God‘s laws & commands without interference from Satan for a thousand years, and that‘s a long time.

And there was given Him (Jesus) the book

of the prophet Isaiah; and when He had

unrolled the scroll, He found the place where

it was written, ―The Spirit of the Lord is

upon Me; for this reason, He has anointed Me

to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent

Me to heal those who are brokenhearted, to

proclaim pardon to the captives and recovery

of sight to the blind, to send forth in

deliverance those who have been crushed, to

proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.‖ Luke 4:17-19

If it is not a Jubilee Year when Christ returns, it will be just like the Jubilee Year. Christ will be the fulfilling of the Jubilee Year.
