Scripture

First Lesson Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire

9:30 am

5

house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see

6 9:30 am

visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' "

Psalm 104:25-35, 37 25 O LORD, how manifold are your works! *in wisdom you

have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too

many to number, *creatures both small and great. 27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, *which

you have made for the sport of it. 28 All of them look to you *to give them their food in due

season. 29 You give it to them; they gather it; *you open your hand,

and they are filled with good things. 30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; *you take away

their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *and so you renew the face of the earth.

32 May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; *may the LORD rejoice in all his works.

33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; *he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; *I will praise my God while I have my being.

35 May these words of mine please him; *I will rejoice in the LORD.

37 Bless the LORD, O my soul. *Hallelujah!

Second Lesson Romans :22-27

We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the

8 9:30 am

mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Gospel John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

Jesus said to his disciples, ”When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because

9:30 am

9

they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

The Gospel of the Lord. People : Praise to you, Lord Christ

Sermon The Reverend Kevin M. Cross

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

10 9:30 am

Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People for Pentecost Sunday

Let us now unite in prayer, as the disciples did on the first Pentecost, and open ourselves to receive the very same Holy Spirit.

That the Church, in the power of the Spirit, may make the Gospel understandable to people of every race, language, and culture, Breathe on us, breath of God, and fill us with life anew: in your mercy, hear our prayer.

That the Holy Spirit of Peace may unite and reconcile the peoples and nations of the earth, bringing an end to war, hatred, and discrimination, Breathe on us, breath of God, and fill us with life anew: in your mercy, hear our prayer.

That the Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of Life, may renew the face of the earth and make it a place where the poor are fed, the strangers are welcomed, and the unborn are brought

9:30 am

11

safely to birth, Breathe on us, breath of God, and fill us with life anew: in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord of life, Hear us in your love. Remember in your love all those who suffer from illness, loneliness and a lack of hope and joy. Today we pray especially for:

That each baptized Christian may develop more fully his or her response to all the gifts which the Spirit bestows for the service of the Body of Christ, Breathe on us, breath of God, and fill us with life anew: in your mercy, hear our prayer.

That the Holy Spirit, who purifies us of sin and raises the dead, may bring all our departed loved ones into the fullness of God's presence. Remember in your love those who have

12 9:30 am

died. We also remember those in our armed forces who have died in service to their country.

Are there others? You are invited to name them aloud or silently in your heart… Breathe on us, breath of God, and fill us with life anew: in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Offertory Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling Michael Burkhardt

Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

The Great Thanksgiving

Presider: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Presider: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Presider: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and

14 9:30 am

everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Preface

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy. Lord,

God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosana in the highest.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take,

9:30 am

15

eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

Lord of life, Hear us in your love. Remember in your love all those who suffer from illness, loneliness and a lack of hope and joy. Today we pray especially for:

That the Holy Spirit, who purifies us of sin and raises the dead, may bring all our departed loved ones into the fullness of God's presence. Remember in your love those who have died. We also remember those in our armed forces who have died in service to their country.

Are there others? You are invited to name them aloud or silently in your heart… Breathe on us, breath of God, and fill us with life anew: in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Confession Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Preface

God, you made us, and the world and everything in it. All the good we see comes from you. You have always loved us but people have not always loved you. You sent Jesus to show us how to live and to bring us back to you again.

He died for us on the cross so that through your Spirit we can all be your people. And so with thanks we praise you singing/saying:

Sanctus

Holy, Holy, Holy. Lord, God of power and might.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosana in the highest.

We are here because on the night before he died Jesus shared a meal with his friends. There he took some bread and gave thanks to you, God. He broke it into pieces, and gave it to

them. “This is my body,” he said. “Do this, and know that I am with you.”

Later, he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to you. He shared it with them, and said “This is my blood, which brings new life. Do this, and know that I am with you.”

And so, remembering Jesus, who died, was raised to new life by you, and is alive forever, we are glad to share that life and live in him and proclaim the mystery of our faith.

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Send your Holy Spirit so that this bread and wine can be for us the body and blood of Jesus, and through this food give us strength to live as your people.

Help us care for your world and for each other in the way that Jesus showed us. Until he comes again, with all your people in every time and every land we worship you and say: We praise you. We thank you. We bless you. AMEN

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

Let us pray.

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Would you like to meet your Parishioners and take part in usher duties? It is very easy, at the 8 AM indoor service you record their name on our roster sheet, indicate location of the host basket, the bulletins and indicate that they may sit in any pew. For those unvaccinated or would feel more comfortable social distancing, there is a section with signs where to sit. For the 9:30 AM outdoor service, you man a table and you record their name on our roster sheet, indicate location of the host basket, the bulletins, Lifelines and other communications.
