Day One APS: Process OverviewHighlights:

Glows: Attendance Campaign• Day One: Be There officially launched in July with these goals:
(1) raise awareness about the importance of being present in school, and
(2) increase Day One attendance
• 41,682 students were present & ready to learn on Day One, a 4% increase (or
1,647 more students than Day One 2013).

Glows: Staffing• 22 new Principals and 300+ new teachers were hired.
• Over 98% of open teacher positions were filled and10 vacancies remain (less than 1% of 3,200 teacher positions).
• 107 bus operators converted from hourly to full-time.
• 83 crossing guards hired and assigned.

Glows: AcademicsSchedules
• All students who were registered prior to Day One had schedules.
• New students received their schedules quickly.
Instruction
• Hours and hours of content-specific professional learning was delivered, including sessions on Gifted & Talented and targeted professional learning for diverse urban students.
• Many teachers focused on instruction on Day One.
• Students will receive wrap-around supports from a school-based network of: 50 newly hired SST/RTI Intervention Specialists, 111 Counselors, 29 Social workers, and 49 Special Education Lead Teachers.
• A new Board Certified Behavior Analyst joined APS to support students with disabilities who have significant behavior/discipline concerns.
• Registered over 1,200 students during 5 summer, centralized registration events, driving enrollment to over 49,450 students.

Glows: Operations and Technology• Much improved bus route performance (parents received early
notice via postcards and website). Routes were available to view online and hardcopies distributed at open houses.
• Overwhelmingly bus routes ran on-time – approximately 99%.
• Technology distributed 485+ laptops to teachers and staff.
• Over 16,000 virtual student desktop units were deployed in 35 schools over the summer and in 60 schools overall.
• 21 additional dedicated IT technicians will support schools on site.
• All schools were equipped with desks, chairs and other furniture.
• 100% of school-based and central office nutrition staff completed back to school training and 100% of school kitchen health inspection scores posted on website.

GrowsOperations
• On Day One, 12 campuses had malfunctioning HVAC - all spaces with
outages had spot coolers. One large temporary HVAC unit at Toomer in the
cafetorium and at Scott in the gymnasium.
• Bus transportation.
Textbooks• Three schools that ordered textbooks by the June 6th deadline did not
receive orders of 4th and 5th grade math books. These schools were
equipped with class sets on Day One.
• Many APS textbooks are out of print and difficult to source, because we have not done textbook adoptions in years.
Instruction• More consistency and fidelity to teaching APS instructional framework to
ensure we are meeting and exceeding Georgia Performance Standards.

• Our undying commitment to supporting academic excellence beginning Day One is stronger than ever.
• We do not take lightly our individual and collective responsibilities – both big and small – to welcome students and staff back to school for the 2014-2015 academic year.
• There is renewed focus toward owning and addressing key areas where our efforts have fallen short of expectations in the past.
• Day in and day out, APS is making great strides to increase accountability, restore trust, and do the right thing for students and staff beginning Day One and each day forward.
