Daya Center for Peace Logo takes its root from this beautiful story:

"In the Andean, there was a fire and all the animals ran out of the beautiful home. The animals thought that if they cross the Amazon River and reach

the other side they should be safe. All the animals reached the other side and they were watching their home... getting burned by this big fire. And they were seeing who was missing. They wanted to see if they had all made it.

And they saw that the hummingbird was missing. And they were like oh no maybe the hummingbird fell asleep and was burned in the fire. And just as

they were saying that they saw the hummingbird from across the river shoot out of the fire and into the water. And then they saw her shoot out of the

water and back into the fire. And they were like “what is she doing? Crazy hummingbird.” And they saw her shoot in and out of the water and fire sev-

eral times. Out of the water into the fire, out of the fire into the water. And eventually they realized that in her beak she was taking a tiny drop of water

each time to the fire.

Finally after doing this many times and she’s all tired she crosses the river all the way to the other side to where the other animals are and she col-

lapses on the ground and she’s hardly breathing. And they all say, “Hum-mingbird, you must be crazy! Why did you think you were going to be able to put that fire out? Impossible.” And the hummingbird said, I was doing what

I can and I played my role to save my home.” They all said, “There is so much we can do to save our home. Let’s all go back and let’s get water and

try to put that fire out.” Just as they were crossing and they were half way across the river, a big stormy rain came and put the fire out. Mother Earth

gave them a message that they have a role, that each one has a role."

"Each of us have a role to play to save our planet and help each other to relate with each other with peace and compassion"

To be compassionate with oneself and with the other is important for peace to prevail and sustain. Theword Daya means Compassion in Sanskrit and in few other languages. Daya Center for Peace is an importantinitiative that works in collaboration with various local partners in India and SouthAsia to strengthen andhelp communities for peaceful and compassionate coexistence. Culture of Peace Programme (COP) Daya Center is committed to working with educational institutions in transforming and helping teachers and students to become role models for the society. Schools are a microcosm of the larger society and are influenced by social systems, cultural values, religious beliefs, economic policies and political thought. Recognizing this, schools are increasingly moving towards a holistic approach to education, rather than confining it to a subject centered and academic oriented learning.

Conflict and violence is emerging in an unprecedented manner in society, and unfortunately disharmony finds its way into schools. Therefore, the need to nurture the value of peaceful co-existence inchildren is essential.

Daya Center for Peace feels that educational institutions play a crucial role in shaping future generations. Through the COP program weempower teachers and students to be sensitive, to relate and to thrive in a heterogeneousenvironment.COPaimsatdevelopinglifeskillstoenableparticipants to be team players, hone leadership qualities, inculcate higher socialandhumanvaluesandexpandingbehaviouralskills.

Daya Center for Peace will work with teachers, parents and students. Very often school children do encounter conflicts in their classrooms, homes, community, and face various pressures that are often left not addressedthusleavingthechildreninstressandfrustration. Therefore,Daya Center feels the need of working with teachers and students in strengtheningpeacefulcoexistenceintheschoolsandindevelopinglifeskills.

Daya Center for Peace is proposing to run series of activities under cultureofpeaceprogrammeinAndhraPradesh,Gujarat,Assam,Manipur,Nagaland, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Daya Center will simultaneously be building a support network of schools that will work together to strengthen the programme.
