Baston Road is, by far, the worst dirt road in our county and I would even go further to say it is the worst dirt road I have ever traveled and I have lived in rural Florida, north Georgia and south Georgia. This road, located off Danburg Road (Highway 44), is a frequently used road by our county school buses. Two buses (one regular education and one special education) in the mornings travel down all the way to the end and back to pick up students at several stops and then repeat the same route in the afternoons. A third bus also goes down all the way to the end and back to drop off students who attend our after-school program four days a week. As you can see, this road is traveled frequently on a daily basis and it is in horrible condition. The incredible amount of rain we’ve had recently has caused ruts and cavities to grow larger and caused travel to become even more treacherous for our buses, students and drivers.

My drivers frequently complain about almost getting stuck and having to rock the bus back and forth to get free creating a safety issue for the students on the bus as well as any parent or young child possibly standing on the outside. In fact, one morning in February of this year, a driver was making the turn-around after picking up students on Baston Road and the bus got stuck in the mud. We had to take him a spare bus from the shop and the students (pre-k through 12 grade) had to walk 40-50 yards from the stuck bus to the spare because we couldn’t get down the road any further to be able to turn the bus around. Students’ shoes and jeans had mud all over them in addition to the fact they had to walk that distance in the pouring down rain. This type of scenario is not acceptable. There are deep ruts running through the entire road from beginning to end as well as deep pits and holes. On that particular day, there was a significant “pond” covering at least four fifths of the road in one spot and in that spot, off to one side, sits a tree stump. If the driver tries to maneuver the hole full of water, he or she risks hitting the stump. In addition, the vegetation is so close to the narrow road on both sides, that when drivers try to maneuver the ruts, it scrubs the buses’ exteriors.

Baston Road is not a particularly long road, but it is a very congested road with many residents along its length. I have also had to reroute a bus that should go in there due to logistics, but because he has a student in a wheelchair, I have determined this road is too rough for that student to endure the trip in and out. Therefore, I have had to assign another bus to that road and stop even though it is not in her normal route area.

From Transportation Director’s Support Letter who also documented the Bus Incident in January 2015

Excerpted from Resident Support Letter:

I have lived here 4 ½ years at 397 Baston Trailer Park. Both sides of loop are packed with holes and mud. My truck is a Toyota Highlander 2008 that got stuck on the wet land when it was raining. My friend pulled me out with a new pickup truck from the grass because the road was so bad. This was 6-7 months ago in August 2014.

Also, next door to me a handicap kid rides the short bus. The bus driver lets him off at the end of the road at the loop because she does not want to go thru the holes where the water is. (383 Baston)

The people who lived there before them had a small car. They moved 4 months ago also, one of the reasons is because the car did get stuck, and they had to get a jeep to pull them out. (383 Baston)

The Baptist Church bus would pull in my yard on Wednesdays because they did not want to go around.

P.S. My Step dad was driving too fast about 30 mph & his car hit a bump & hit a tree. Someone cut the tree down and painted the stump orange.
