different perspectives and they’re not all

Welcome to the d.confestival at the Hasso-Plattner-Institut in Potsdam!

We are delighted that so many creative lateral thinkers and innovators from all over

the world and completely different fields have accepted the invitation to join us

here. During the next three days we have the opportunity to take part in passionate

discussions and disputes and together to create something new and exciting.

On this fifth birthday of our HPI School of Design Thinking, we wanted to give this

global meeting a special setting. Therefore we came up with a new, interactive event

format combining the seriousness of a scientific conference with the lightheartedness

of a festival.

What is Design Thinking’s contribution as an innovation method and culture to inspire

change and renewal processes and create new and truly customized products and

services? This is the central question that will preoccupy us here.

One thing is clear: it is only through innovation that society and the economy can

master the challenges of an ever-faster changing world.

Dynamic change cannot tolerate rigid thinking and acting any more than it can

antiquated structures or processes. Digitalization and global internetworking challenge

us to find new analytical and creative solutions – especially for the workplace of

the future.

Design Thinking is an excellent approach because it unites the analytical side with the

creative side of the innovation process. Thus forward-looking solutions for complex

problems and sustainable growth potential can be tapped and developed.

Use this opportunity at the d.confestival to get to know other Design Thinkers,

entrepreneurs and innovators from all over the world. Have fun thinking laterally and

acting creatively in teams composed of diverse members. Design think the future!

Welcome from Christoph Meinel

Welcome from Ulrich Weinberg

Welcome to the first international meeting of the Design Thinking community!

When I came to Palo Alto in the spring of 2007 to visit the Stanford d.school and

gather the first impressions I had, after a few days, the feeling that something big and

good was going on here - the whole atmosphere felt very unfamiliar, but also very

“right.” I felt that an attempt was being made here to answer the burning questions

of our time with the right tools. Ultimately convincing for me was the incredible

personal commitment of all those involved and the enthusiasm, which was particularly

noticeable among the students.

After five years, the D-School Potsdam has more than 500 students, coached by over

70 professors and assistants. It is this contagious enthusiasm with which people

can work together to solve complex problems that fascinates me again and again.

There are the surprised exclamations of individual students: “I didn’t know I could

do that!” and the enthusiastic, sometimes speechless, responses from our projects

partners: “The idea is so amazingly simple, why didn’t we, as experts, think of that

much earlier?“ that have ensured me that the focus on team work, a team-supportive

work environment and a work process that utilizes both our analytical and intuitive

potentials, is correct and up to date.

I am delighted that, together with our friends at Stanford, we have managed to

mobilize the global community of Design Thinking enthusiasts to come to Potsdam and

reflect on our future during the next three days. The d.confestival has been developed

in good Design Thinking spirit in many iterations throughout the recent months,

together with a global Steering Team and Triad Berlin. The comprehensive program

consists of five layers, with discussions and presentations, workshops, special events

and exhibitions. We will have enough time for personal exchange between the program

slots and we will celebrate on two evenings in our circus tent.

Experience three days in a circle of innovators, thinkers and doers, teachers and

students, researchers and designers, encourage wild ideas and help Design Thinking to

spred around the world!

From the 20th to the 22nd September 2012, the first

international d.confestival is taking place on the campus of the

Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam, close to Berlin. Welcome

to three days of Design Thinking and exciting events!

Meet leading experts in exciting presentations, discuss with

international coaches and fellow participants in interactive

workshops, and experience the meaning of teamwork in truly

multidisciplinary teams. The d.confestival is a conference and

a festival at the same time, a multi-layer forum for design

thinkers, innovators and everyone who is interested. Together,

we will create, present and discuss viable solutions for crucial

questions of the future.

What is Design Thinking? It is a multidisciplinary approach

to creating products, services and ideas for all spheres of

life. It combines the creativity of design with methods from

technology and business, it creates an environment supportive

of team work, and it always puts the needs of the user

first. Design Thinking is therefore a promising approach to

innovation which can solve complex problems in a creative

and user-friendly way, while also taking into account cost-

effectiveness and technological feasibility.

Many industries and global companies have already recognized

the unique power of innovation that Design Thinking can

unlock. Be it in production or in management, in global

corporations or in smaller companies, in public administration

or in NGOs – where there is need for creativity, innovation and

network thinking, Design Thinking can open up new horizons.

Design Thinking frees up vast potential for innovation and

facilitates economic and sustainable progress, inspiring us

The d.confestival

on our way to a successful future. The d.confestival gives

you the chance to find out about what present and future

possibilities Design Thinking can offer and how it can be

implemented as a strategic approach in global companies.

Representatives of internationally leading companies

and innovation experts from all around the world will be

presenting current perspectives on the pioneering role of

Design Thinking in their professional environment.

In five different program tracks, more than 50 events will

be taking place on the HPI campus. The d.notes will give

you the big picture and introduce you to some of the most

prominent trailblazers of Design Thinking. More than 20

presentations will showcase the newest developments and

applications of Design Thinking in the areas of management,

learning, and research. Numerous workshops will give you

hands-on opportunities to get to know and apply the various

methods of Design Thinking. Last but not least, there will be

a number of special events and evening entertainments full

of surprises. We invite you to take full advantage of all the

different possibilities that this special combination between

conference and festival offers!

The d.circus, a huge circus tent built specifically for the

occasion, will be the central location of the d.confestival. All

the d.notes and many presentations as well as some of the

special events will be taking place in the d.circus. You are also

welcome to stop by at the d.circus during the day to meet and

mingle with other participants. Join the d.confestival! Join the

d.circus!

A primary objective of the class in Transformative Design I am teaching at the Stanford d.school is for the students to have a transformative experience – a goal I believe it is best to leave unstated. This phenomenon of realizing unstated implicit objectives that often transcend the explicit objectives seems to be a characteristic of many d.school classes. This talk analyzes this phenomenon and contrasts Design Thinking activities with traditional design and problem solving activities.

Design Thinking – Helping to Reinvent Enterprise Computing Hasso Plattner, Co-Founder SAP AG, Head of Advisory Board SAPNew software technologies like inMemory systems can speed up business process by a factor of 1000 or more. This significant speed up requires a complete re-thinking of how we run and structure enterprises. Hasso Plattner, the person behind the D-Schools in Stanford and Potsdam, shows how Design Thinking functions as a mental enabler for the management to re-invent current procedures and come up with completely new business ideas.

Design Thinking – Driving Customer Centric Innovation at SAP Jim Hagemann Snabe, Co-CEO SAPCompanies are facing a tremendous and constantly growing pressure of change in a modern, networked society. New products and services require the early involvement of the customer in order to come up with successful solutions. Jim Hagemann Snabe, Co-CEO of SAP describes how Design Thinking is implemented at SAP to support and structure the co-creation process with the customer.

User focus and speed determine the way SAP drives innovation. In his speech about Changing Perspectives! you will learn from Cafer Tosun how the SAP Innovation Center lives up to those principles in its projects with users from diverse industries and partners in research and academia. He will be joined by Christian Regenbrecht and Michael Gutsmann, who will talk about their experiences in engaging with the Innovation Center. Gordon Mühl will then highlight the general importance of Design Thinking for SAP and explain their approach to make Design Thinking an integral part of the software development process and culture, together with Hanswerner Dreissigacker he uses a real-life development project as an example.

If an architect, a business person, a lawyer, a psychologist and an engineer want to work together in a team, they need to agree on a common working process. Using the way how traditional designers think and act helps them to activate both the analytical and the intuitive capacities at the same time, generating surprisingly creative outputs. If the team is supported by a flexible, team-oriented work environment, you can call this Design Thinking. George Kembel, Co-founder and current Executive Director of the d.school at Stanford University meets Oliviero Toscani, internationally acclaimed photographer and designer to discuss commonalities and lines of distinctions between Design Thinking and design.

The final discussion of the d.confestival will bring together some of the most inspiring thinkers and practitioners of Design Thinking to talk about where we can go from here. What is the future of the d.confestival, of the different schools of Design Thinking, of Design Thinking itself? Get a first glimpse of what is yet to come.

How can the financial services industry develop new models and products that are more closely in touch with customers’ needs and wishes? How will such a close relation between a bank and its customers find material expression in the future design of a bank’s branches? The presentations in this cluster show various applications of design thinking in the financial sector.

Can Design Thinking enhance worldwide communication? The telecommunications industry has been confronted with questions of globalization and network thinking much earlier than most other industries. This has made the industry a beacon in terms of engaging with Design Thinking and its approaches to people and spaces. Learn how several of the most forward thinking companies engage with the future of telecommunications in future labs, creative centers and other spaces of innovation.

Can Design Thinking increase mobility?Mobility cannot be narrowed down to one means of transportation. From the perspective of the consumer, mobility simply means getting from A to B – whether that involves walking, cycling, driving, taking the train or flying. A perspective that focuses on the consumer suggests that we have to think of the various means of transportation in interconnected ways if we want to get to an understanding of mobility that is both user-friendly and future-oriented.

Can Design Thinking promote health?New approaches in the health industry are taking the idea of health services beyond just finding the right pill. They aim to offer services that are more encompassing and more in tune with the patient’s needs and wishes. In light of the demographic changes of today and tomorrow, the battle against illnesses needs to be accompanied by a battle for health. Learn how Design Thinking helps develop and implement paradigmatic changes in the health industry.

The Management Presentations will give international answers to the question

of how Design Thinking goes above and beyond established business processes

and structures and how it can be implemented in global companies. Practitioners

of Design Thinking from different sectors and industries will come together

to share their experiences in five thematic clusters: Banking & Finance,

Telecommunications, Mobility, Health, Retail & Logistics.

Bernhard von Mutius is a social scientist, philosopher, author founder and partner of the Denkbank, and ambassador of a new way of thinking. The magic of the “black boxes” he works with are an expression of a new type of presentation that inspires questions and open-minded thinking. He is always in search of integrated, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to resolve the complexities of today and to inspire confidence in our ability to shape the future. He is the philosophical thinker among the doers. (in German)

In our age of global and local branding with its perceived lack of adequate tools of critical thinking, we need to rethink design and Design Thinking. How can they be shaped and used as critical tools in a global context, and how can they help us to address the systemic challenges of the future? Lutz Engelke, CEO and Creative Director of the award-winning communications agency Triad Berlin offers some food for thought.

Imagine a world in which we can actually be pleased about the benefits our consumption has on the environment. That is exactly the kind of world that the Cradle to Cradle® design concept opens up to all of us by being “eco-effective” instead of “eco-efficient.” Rather than minimizing the material flows, eco-effectivity transforms products and their respective material flows so that a workable relationship between ecological systems and economic growth is made possible.

What is the future of education? In comparison to other

areas of society, it may often seem that the educational

sector is, paradoxically enough, slowest in implementing

changes and adapting to new needs. The Learning

important steps being taken toward groundbreaking

changes in the theory and practice of education.

Nowhere is the idea of cross-disciplinarity and network thinking being realized more radically and with more passion for innovation than in the various academic programs for Design Thinking presented in this talk. Hear about the objectives and approaches of Design Thinking departments from all over the world.

Everything is connected in this journey through time via the California Academy of Sciences. This San Francisco institution is home to an aquarium, planetarium, natural history museum, as well as Research and Education facilities. Science meets design in this Renzo Piano-designed transparent building containing 26 million real specimens. See how things have been shaken up at the Academy with a history deeply connected to the earthquakes that have rocked the city. Find out what it takes to make an earthquake… exhibit. Throughout, design plays a key role in developing engaging experiences around the defining issues of our time. Literally and metaphorically, we notice the earth-shattering moments while the ground is continually shifting beneath us. The question is, how can museums remain relevant and become the learning institutes of the future?

Rethinking design means redesigning thinking. The way we work is being redefined as disciplines shift, merge and emerge. New methods challenge designers and clients alike. Speed and depth are not opposites anymore. Agile processes give us working prototypes more quickly. Designers use their skills to visualize the invisible. Cooperation doesn’t mean consensus, idea generation is not idea selection, and failure is part of the process. Everything restarts as soon as it is finished.

The seeds for a new attitude toward learning and education have to be sown early on: schools need to put a much stronger emphasis on teamwork and responsibility, on new forms and spaces of knowledge acquisition, and on opening minds for uncommon combinations and unheard of ideas. Get to know some schools that make a difference.

How can established professionals learn to use Design Thinking? In these presentations, coaches from various training programs will show how the principles of Design Thinking can be conveyed effectively to company staff members and managers in continuing education programs and management trainings. The session will be moderated by Timm Krohn, HPI Academy.

In addition to established academic programs, Design Thinking is also being taught and practiced as part of established curricula at universities worldwide. Students of different disciplines get the chance of grasping and applying the revolutionary ideas of Design Thinking in courses, seminars and workshops. Find out how Design Thinking is integrated into existing curricula.

Frame Creation is a design-based innovation method for governments, institutions and companies that builds on the results of 20 years of research into the practices of expert designers. Kees Dorst, Founder of the Frame Creation method, gives an introduction and offers first glimpses of the extended methodology that will be presented in his new book to be published by MIT Press in 2013.

Why is design important and why now? It is about how the shift from an “economy of scale” to an “economy of choice” creates a growing number of foggy problems characterized by incomplete information that changes faster than it can be understood. Design can help organizations ensure they are solving the right problem and avoid crafting exquisite solutions to the wrong problem.

Yong Se Kim is the Director of the Creative Design Institute and a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University. His presentation will introduce a service design method and design support tools together with a few design cases developed at the Creative Design Institute, Sungkyunkwan University, Korea.

Engineering design has brought the world remarkable technologies and benefits; it is also responsible for environmental degradation, sickness and in some cases death. What distinguishes design that seeks only to meet with applicable standards from that in which the designer and design transcend the minimum? What behaviors and attributes define what we can perhaps call “Designership” and how might Designership relate to other similarly suffixed terms?

This workshop will challenge you to create something that will catalyze a special experience for someone at the d.confestival. The majority of the workshop will be hands-on working time, in which we will emphasize two aspects that do not always play out in Design Thinking: completion and subjectivity. The workshop will end with the deployment of a creation (not just a concept), therefore you will have to use the available capabilities and resources. And since the topic of catalyzing a special moment for someone is inherently emotional and subjective, you will develop your own stance on the challenge and share your creativity and experience with others. (30 participants max.)

This workshop is particularly geared toward company representatives. Would you like to understand how Design Thinking works or what kinds of management culture and workflow come with it? Are you wondering what special potential Design Thinking holds for workflow processes in companies and how it can be implemented, documented and validated? This workshop will give you answers. (25 participants max., company representatives only)

This workshop will offer participants some guidance on how to encourage an innovation team to deliver outstanding results. Based on the experiences we had as Design Thinkers in many SAP projects, we put together a list of 10 commandments that will help managers to get the most out of their teams. After an introductory presentation, participants will work in small groups. We will discuss the validity of the commandments and brainstorm on how they can be implemented in practice while making sure that the expectations of the manager’s stakeholders are met. (30 participants max.)

Brand identeties can be seen as a framework to inspire, create and evaluate innovations. To create sustainable and valuable innovations that lead a brand and its products and services into a prospering und successful future, brand core elements can become a basic foundation for differentiating and outstanding ideas. This workshop will highlight future mobility topics. How can automobile brands adapt to mobility needs of tomorrow? How do car brands even survive in a future that can also be imagined without cars?(20 participants max.)

In most cases, we simply do not know the motives that guide human behavior. The only way to get an insight into what really drives people’s actions is empathy. This process of getting a feel for people’s motives has to be sensitive and allow for as little interference as possible, and the observer needs to be aware of cognitive mechanisms that influence his or her own perception, reasoning and reactions. In this workshop, we will shed a light on this process by inviting you to participate in an experimental experience geared to both beginners and practitioners of Design Thinking. (20 participants max.)

Frame Creation is a design-based innovation method for governments, institutions and companies. It brings together the results of 20 years of research into the practices of expert designers. After an introductory talk you will learn how to use the Frame Creation method to create completely new solutions to a particular, complex problem situation. In the following discussion we will talk about different ways of implementing Frame Creation into organizational structures and processes. This is a sneak preview of the extended Frame Creation methodology that will be presented to the public in early 2013. Please note: This workshop consists of two sessions, participants will be asked to attend both the 2 p.m. and the 5 p.m. session to gain a complete understanding of the method’s theory and application.

What happens when a marketing research company is brave enough to turn the tables –to study their own community culture instead of clients’ and users’? Most Design Thinkers and engineers know how it is to be working in a team that is distributed all over the globe. This kind of teamwork creates a whole new set of challenges. The participants of this workshop will get a chance to report their experiences in globally distributed teamwork and will then work in groups to apply non-virtual, non-distributed Design Thinking to create solutions for some of the problems identified. Please note: It is desirable that each participant should bring printed-out slides or pictures that visualize their background and experiences in working with globally distributed teams.(36 active participants max., observers welcome)

In this workshop you will join an active innovation expedition along the 5 islands of the FORTH Innovation Method to solve the innovation challenge of Sanoma Media. In this workshop you will be introduced to a project that started in March 2012 and was completed when the product, a deployment cockpit for SAP Rapid Deployment Solutions, went live on September 2, 2012. You will be taken on a journey behind the scenes of this Design Thinking project in SAP’s LEAN/Scrum environment. How is it possible to start a project knowing neither what issue is to be solved nor what methods are to be used and to still end up with a final product successfully going live only 6 months later? Find out in this workshop. (60 participants max.)

We live in a transition from the era of scarcity to the era of abundance. We already have EVERYTHING we need to do ANYTHING. We just need to know how to connect and organize ourselves to get it and how to include those places that are still isolated and with a huge handicap to rethink and address social needs. “There is no longer such a thing as scarcity. There are only misallocated resources.” (Venessa Miemis, The Future is Networks) This is why we want to co-create a creative network that will work globally to solve local problems, connecting knowledge and resources, allowing people to interact freely and create something that impacts society.

This workshop starts with a short theoretical presentation of the gruppenbing! method and a discussion about the potential of combining it with Design Thinking. In the practical part that follows, teams will be created to start a Design Thinking process. The teams will be put into an intelligent communication structure in order to use the knowledge and the insights of the other teams for their own challenge. This will foster the group’s collective intelligence beyond that of single teams and thus enrich the development and results of the whole Design Thinking process. (72 participants max.)

This workshop explores a new approach to the prototyping phase of Design Thinking. Participants will get to know a rapid game design prototyping method that helps to turn ideas and concepts into game-prototypes. The strength of a game-prototype (as opposed to look-alike-prototypes) is that it turns ideas into something actionable with a fairly high level of involvement of the tester. After creating and testing game-prototypes, we will reflect on the strengths and challenges of this method.

Please note: Some experience in Design Thinking is required for participating in this workshop. (24 participants max.)

“We need first of all a music in which not only are sounds just sounds but in which people are just people, not subject, that is, to laws established by any one of them even if he is ‘the composer’or ‘the conductor.’ Finally we need a music which no longer prompts talk of audience participation, for in it the devision between performers and audience no longer exists: a music made by everyone.“ John Cage, 1973

Music is one of the areas in which the importance of teamwork and integrated perception plays out most notably. This is why d.confestival participants will be given the unique opportunity to conduct a chamber orchestra!

David Kelley is considered to be most prominent pioneer of Design Thinking. He is also the founder and chairman of IDEO, a global design and innovation consultancy based in California. Meet David and ask him everything you always wanted to know about Design Thinking … but were afraid to ask.

Bamboo is one of the most sustainable raw materials on earth. In this special event, a team of d.confestival participants will be invited to build a bamboo tensegrity sculpture – a representation of the commitment of Design Thinking to ecological sustainability and global cooperation. The term “tensegrity” is a portmanteau of tension and integrity attributed to Richard Buckminster Fuller and Kenneth Snelson. After a short introduction to bamboo and tensegrity sculptures, the team will build a tensegrity sculpture as shown in the picture. Please note: Only a limited number of participants can work on the sculpture.

In this special event you will experience a remote Design Thinking session enabled by the Tele-Board system. Participants will be split into two groups and separated in two locations. They will then work together on one challenge with the help of the Tele-Board system. With this setup we addresses the need for remote collaboration: a daily challenge for teams working in global corporations. (8 participants max.)

Filmmaking shows that the combination of teamwork and open-mindedness is crucial if you want to create something out of the ordinary. For those who would like to get a close-up view of the industry while spending their Saturday afternoon in Potsdam, a tour of the Babelsberg film studios, the birthplace of German cinema, will be offered. We will meet at 2 p.m. at the main entrance of the Filmpark Babelsberg. (30 participants max.)

With instructions from film professionals, teams of 10 people get the chance to produce a short ad in mixed roles. Be a director, actor, camera or sound operator!(50 participants max.)

Remote collaboration among geographically dispersed team members has become standard practice for many companies and research teams. In this talk, we present the Tele-Board system and its features, use cases in different domains and various hardware setups, as well as insights of our ongoing research.
