    IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS

    For your protection, please read these safetyinstructions completely before operatingthe appliance, and keep this manual forfuture reference.

    Carefully observe all warnings, precautionsand instructions on the appliance, or the onedescribed in the operating instructions andadhere to them.

    Power Sources

    This set should be operated only from the type of

    power source indicated on the marking label. Ifyou are not sure of the type of electrical powersupplied to your home, consult your dealer orlocal power company. For those sets designed tooperate from battery power, or other sources, referto the operating instructions.

    Polarization

    This set may be equipped with a polarized acpower cord plug (a plug having one blade widerthan the other).

    This plug will fit into the power outlet only oneway. This is a safety feature. If you are unable toinsert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversingthe plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contactyour electrician to have a suitable outlet installed.Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarizedplug by forcing it in.

    Overloading

    Do not overload wall outlets, extension cords orconvenience receptacles beyond their capacity,since this can result in fire or electric shock.

    Object and Liquid Entry

    Never push objects of any kind into the setthrough openings as they may touch dangerousvoltage points or short out parts that could resultin a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of anykind on the set.

    Attachments

    Do not use attachments not recommended by themanufacturer, as they may cause hazards.

    Cleaning

    Unplug the set from the wall outlet beforecleaning or polishing it. Do not use liquid cleanersor aerosol cleaners. Use a cloth lightly dampened

    with water for cleaning the exterior of the set.

    Water and Moisture

    Do not use power-line operated sets near water for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchensink, or laundry tub, in a wet basement, or near aswimming pool, etc.

    Power-Cord ProtectionRoute the power cord so that it is not likely to bewalked on or pinched by items placed upon oragainst them, paying particular attention to theplugs, receptacles, and the point where the cordexits from the appliance.

    Accessories

    Do not place the set on an unstable cart, stand,tripod, bracket, or table. The set may fall, causing

    serious injury to a child or an adult, and seriousdamage to the set. Use only a cart, stand, tripod,bracket, or table recommended by themanufacturer.

    Ventilation

    The slots and openings in the cabinet are providedfor necessary ventilation. To ensure reliableoperation of the set, and to protect it fromoverheating, these slots and openings must neverbe blocked or covered. Never cover the slots and openings with a cloth

    or other materials. Never block the slots and openings by placing

    the set on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similarsurface.

    Never place the set in a confined space, such asa bookcase, or built-in cabinet, unless properventilation is provided.

    Do not place the set near or over a radiator orheat register, or where it is exposed to direct

    sunlight.

    Lightning

    For added protection for this set during a lightningstorm, or when it is left unattended and unused forlong periods of time, unplug it from the wall

    outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system.This will prevent damage to the set due tolightning and power-line surges.

    Damage Requiring Service

    Unplug the set from the wall outlet and referservicing to qualified service personnel under thefollowing conditions:

    When the power cord or plug is damaged orfrayed.

    If liquid has been spilled or objects have falleninto the set.

    If the set has been exposed to rain or water. If the set has been subject to excessive shock by

    being dropped, or the cabinet has beendamaged.

    If the set does not operate normally whenfollowing the operating instructions. Adjust

    only those controls that are specified in theoperating instructions. Improper adjustment ofother controls may result in damage and willoften require extensive work by a qualifiedtechnician to restore the set to normal operation.

    When the set exhibits a distinct change inperformance this indicates a need for service.

    Servicing

    Do not attempt to service the set yourself asopening or removing covers may expose you to

    dangerous voltage or other hazards.Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

    Replacement parts

    Using the camcorder

    Do not hold the camcorder by thefollowing parts.

    The camcorder is not dustproofed,

    dripproofed or waterproofed. See Abouthandling of your camcorder(p. 107).

    To prevent discs from being broken orrecorded images from being lost, do notdo the following when either of therespective lamps of the POWER switch(p. 25) or the access lamps (p. 28, 30) ison:

    to remove the battery pack or ACAdaptor from the camcorder.

    to apply mechanical shock or vibration tothe camcorder.

    When connecting your camcorder toanother device with a USB cable, be sureto insert the connector plug in the correctway. Pushing the plug forcibly into theterminal will damage the terminal andmay result in a malfunction of yourcamcorder.

    About menu items, LCD panel,viewfinder, and lens

    A menu item that is grayed out is notavailable under the current recording orplayback conditions.

    The LCD screen and the viewfinder aremanufactured using extremely high-precision technology, so over 99.99% ofthe pixels are operational for effective

    use. However, there may be some tinyblack points and/or bright points (white,red, blue, or green in color) that appearconstantly on the LCD screen and the

    What you can do with your camcorder

    * DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) is a high-capacity optical disc.

    No rewinding to start recording (p.31, 34)

    Recorded images are stored in empty areas on thedisc so there is no risk that valuable recordings areaccidentally overwritten.

    Since no rewinding is necessary prior to recording,you can start shooting any time you desire.

    You can find a scene quickly using a VISUAL

    INDEX screen (p.32, 41)

    The VISUAL INDEX screen allows you to check

    recorded contents at a glance. All you have to do istouch the scene you want to view.

    The disc does not wear out no matter how manytimes you play it back. The precious moments youhave captured on disc last for a long time.

    Records widescreen format and 5.1ch surround

    sound (p.36, 38)You can record high quality widescreen images on a wideLCD screen that shows the same 16:9 angle of view as awide TV. Realistic 5.1ch surround sound can also bedirectly recorded onto the disc.

    Images recorded in widescreen format can be played backon a wide TV with complete panoramic effect. Discs are alsorecorded with 5.1ch surround sound to provide full sound ona home theater.

    Image data can be quickly transferred to a computerwithout requiring playback.Computers with Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) provideeven faster image transfer.

    Using the supplied software to edit and copy (p.83)

    Picture Motion Browser, the software supplied with your

    camcorder allows you to edit movies or still images storedin your computer to create your original DVD. Copyingdiscs could not be easier enabling you to share yourprecious moments with family and friends.

    Your camcorder uses the VBR (Variable Bit Rate) format to automatically adjust image quality to suit the

    recording scene. This technology causes fluctuations in the recording time of a disc. Movies containingquickly moving and complex images are recorded at a higher bit rate, and this reduces the overall recordingtime.

    A recording format that is compatible with most DVD devices, especially afterfinalizing.

    In VIDEO mode, only the most recent image can be erased.

    A recording format that enables editing with your camcorder (deleting andrearranging the order of images).A finalized disc can be played back in DVD devices*1that support VR mode.

    To view a disc recorded on your camcorder on other DVD devices, you need to finalizeit first.

    Step 4: Preparing for recording

    Open the LCD panel 90 degrees to the

    A new 8 cm DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-

    R, or DVD+R DL is required for recording(p. 14).

    1 Check that the power of yourcamcorder is on.

    To remove the disc

    2 Press the disc holder in the center of thedisc compartment, and remove the disc byholding the edge.

    b Notes Be careful not to obstruct the operation with

    your hand or other objects, etc., when openingor closing the disc cover. Move the belt to thebottom of the camcorder, then open or close thedisc cover.

    If you catch the belt when closing the disccover, it may cause your camcorder tomalfunction.

    Do not touch the disc with the recording side or

    pickup lens (p.109).When using a double-sided disc, take care not tosmudge the surface with fingerprints.

    If you close the disc cover with the disc setincorrectly, it may cause your camcorder tomalfunction.

    Do not disconnect the power sources duringformatting.

    Do not apply shock or vibration to yourcamcorder: while the ACCESS lamp is on

    while the ACCESS lamp is flashing while [DISC ACCESS] or [PREPARING TO

    OPEN] is displayed on the LCD screen It may take some time to remove the disc

    depending on the disc condition or recordedmaterials.

    It may take up to 10 minutes to remove a disc ifit is damaged or is dirty with fingerprints, etc. Inthat case, the disc might be damaged.

    z Tips You can remove the disc when a power source

    is connected to your camcorder even when yourcamcorder is turned off. However, the discrecognition process (step 4) does not start.

    To delete all of the previously recorded imagesfrom a DVD-RW/DVD+RW, then to use itagain to record new images, see Deleting allscenes on the disc (Formatting) onpage 61.

    You can check the right disc using [DISCSELECT GUIDE] on the HOME MENU (page

    60).

    You can use only a Memory Stick Duomarked with or

    (p. 104).

    You can dub images played back on your camcorder to other recording devices, such as VCRsor DVD/HDD recorders.     Utilizingrecordingmedia

    Deleting all scenes on the disc (Formatting)

    Formatting makes the recorded disc newand reusable by deleting all the datarecorded on the disc. The recordingcapacity of the disc is recovered byformatting it.A DVD-R/DVD+R DL cannot beformatted. Replace it with a newdisc.

    If you format a finalized disc

    A DVD-RW (in VIDEO mode) returns tothe unfinalized state. The disc must befinalized again to view its contents onother devices.

    In the case of a DVD-RW (VR mode)/DVD+RW, formatting deletes all imageson a finalized disc. One of the followingicons, or , appears on the

    screen, but there is no need to finalize thedisc again before playing the disc on otherdevices.*

    * To create the DVD menu on a DVD+RW,finalize the disc again (p. 46).

    You can compensate for camera shake (thedefault setting is [ON]). Set[STEADYSHOT] to [OFF] ( ) whenusing a tripod (optional), then the imagebecomes natural.

    When this is set to [ON] (the defaultsetting), the shutter speed is automaticallyreduced to 1/30 second when recording indark conditions.

    You can display the frame and check thatthe subject is horizontal or vertical bysetting [GUIDEFRAME] to [ON].The frame is not recorded. Press DISP/BATT INFO to make the frame disappear.

    z Tips Positioning the subject at the cross point of the

    guide frame makes a balanced composition.
