Snowflake Festival
Get down to the Kinsmen Beach area for the 8th Annual Snowflake Festival, cele-brating everything winter in the valley. It happens this Friday, January 20, beginning at 4 pm with the Lake Spiel. At 5 pm there will be live music from ‘Valley Forged’ and at 6 pm you can enjoy the ‘Taste of the Valley’, a sampling ses-sion of treats from 9 valley restaurants. For that you purchase a $10 passport and en-joy some great tastes. Later in the evening (8 pm) brings on the fireworks out on the lake. It is a fantastic show with the lake, mountains, snow and beautiful, bright, fiery colours. The echoes add to it nicely (sorry to all the dogs out there). It is a great event that links to the Olympic Torch passing through the valley back in the day.
Ten Years of Tupperware
‘Tupperware by Julie’ has been at it for 10 years now and Julie is celebrating with a 10th Anniversary Sale this coming Wednes-day, January 25, from 7 to 9 pm at the Best Western Invermere Inn.
It is also a fundraiser for the Glacier Peaks Gymnastics Society, another great group doing awesome things with youth in the valley. You can purchase draw tickets to help support them. Everyone who attends will receive a free gift plus there will be great discounts on Tupperware products. Give Julie a call for more details at 250-688-5564.
Poor Dog
This morning my dog ate a bunch of tiles from a Scrabble game. I’m thinking that his next dump could spell trouble.
Fishing Derby
The 17th Annual Kinsmen Fishing Derby is coming up next Saturday, January 28. People of all ages strive to catch the larg-est non-game fish to win the $500 first-place prize ($300 and $200 for second and third). Entry is $35. Registration begins at 8 am at The Station Neighbourhood Pub and fish-ing is from 9 am to 3 pm. Your entry in-cludes delivery of a warm burger to your fishing hole. It is always a good day. I haven’t missed it for years.

Bonspiel on the Lake
The 34th Annual Bonspiel on the Lake is happening this weekend, Friday to Sun-day, January 20 to 22. Sixty-four teams from as far away as Seattle will try for the championship. It is a great fundraiser for the Invermere District Curling Centre and a great time for all the curlers. Everyone has a lot of fun experiencing curling on Lake Windermere and the great banquet and dance on Sat-urday night. The Invermere Legion will have a cook shack/warming hut with fantastic food and beverages for your enjoyment. About half the teams are locals so come on down anytime this weekend and cheer on your friends. It is an amazing event and well worth stopping in to check it out.
Riddliculous
Solve the first clue to get a word. Then remove a letter to solve the second clue and so on. I’m getting bigger and stronger, and taller each day. With a boat and an oar, I’m off and away. I’ve borrowed some money, soon I pay. On a plane I’m long, on a bird I’m strong. An opponent is beat, I oppose defeat. I surely can’t shout, I am not out. This word you see, when I write about me. See page 9.
Calendar Issues
I am assuming that whoever came up with the spelling of February was also in charge of Wednesday.
Curling Congratulations
Congrats to both our Junior Boys and Jun-ior Girls curling teams. The boys’ team (Tyler and Jordan paired with Matt from Vernon and coached by Joe) travelled to Grand Forks to compete in the Kootenay zone playdowns. The girls’ team (Kaitlyn, Abby, Lily, Alexa and Anna, coached by Holly and Trish) also travelled to Creston for their zone playdowns. Both teams came out on top and will be travelling to the Provincials in Nanaimo in March. Also congrats to Team Shypitka from Cranbrook/Elkford who came out on top here in Invermere at the Senior Zone Play-downs.

Other people matter out there folks. We are mostly embroiled in our own lives and issues and do not notice what is happen-ing around us. But rest assured that every-one is going through many of the same issues as us. Treat people nicely, all day every day. It will make a difference in their lives and in yours. Another important part of happiness is to see the beauty in the things and people that are around us every day. It is way too easy to look for the bad in people and think that we are somehow better than them. But it is so much better to look for the good and build people up. Just imagine a world where everyone felt good about them-selves and worked together. That world is out there but it begins inside of each one of us on a daily basis. If you make folks happy when they are around you then they will add to your happiness as well. So please cut back on the negativity out there and offer up as much positive energy as you can muster. It will always come back to you.
Employment
My friend was bragging that he handles financial transactions for a multi-million dollar corporation. I had to remind him that he was still a McDonalds’ cashier.
Trivia Nights
We all like to think we are intelligent. And we all are intelligent, just in very different ways. As it turns out, even though I put trivia questions in The Valley Peak every week, I am not really good at trivia. I like to remind myself of that every Wednesday evening at The Station Neighbourhood Pub as they run a trivia contest at 7 pm. Emcee Richard comes up with an awe-some variety of questions that challenge every team. Teams can be 1-6 players $2/person) and you win the entry kitty plus some sponsored prizes. It is a really fun evening. Get there early as it fills up every Wednesday. I should note that Jason and I crushed the staff in a little separate head-to-head competition. Thanks to The Station for such a great way to spend an evening.

Watson’s
Waddle
A lot of dogs are considered ‘ g u a r d ’ dogs. Their owners count on them to let them know if something is happening around the prop-erty. I am not sure if I really qualify. I am watching and listening as much as possible. If another dog is in sight, I will let everyone know. I want to make friends. As for the house, I don’t always hear folks until they are at the top of the stairs and knocking. Then I will welcome them with a few barks. I don’t think that I scare them much. As a matter of fact, if you have food with you or fele like petting someone, you are in the door no problem. Which brings me to food. What I am really watching and listening for is food. Anytime Rob heads towards the kitchen, I am up and following. No matter how sound asleep I am, I can hear the fridge or a cup-board opening and I am up. Life is great.
Concerns
Someone broke into my office and left a piece of plasticine on my desk. I am not sure what to make of it.
What Year Was It?
The Canada Pension Plan was introduced, cigarette warning labels became manda-tory, ‘Star Trek’ and ‘The Doors’ debuted and ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ and ‘Dr. Zhivago’ were released. The NHL ap-proved expansion to 12 teams, Adam Sandler was born and Walt Disney died. What year was it? See page 10.
Denial
The Cinefest series runs every second Tuesday until April 11 at Pynelogs Cultural Centre. The show for this coming Tuesday, January 24 is called ‘Denial’. It is a real-life drama about a court battle between a his-torian and gentleman who denies that the Holocaust ever happened. It is a good reminder that history should not be taken for granted. Tickets are $12 for adults ($5 for under-13). The shows begin at 7 pm. Get more information at 250-342-4423.

Snow Golf Champions
Congratulations to the Kinsmen Snow Golf Champions, Rick Magri, Chris Boulton, Sean Verge and Sly Bergeron. They shot a 51, three-under par. They were tied and won on a count-back system. It turned out to be a pretty nice day, warm-ing up during the afternoon. Golf condi-tions were tough with all the snow. As for my team, we must have been play-ing by different rules than the others. We golf a lot and can hit some fairly decent shots but really seem to struggle in the snow. We thought we had a pretty good round but were still 5 shots off the pace. Ouch. Thanks to the Kinsmen for a great day and thanks to The Station Neighbourhood Pub for a perfect after-party venue.
Trailer
There was going to be a new TV series about a plane being hijacked. As it turned out, all they did was shoot the pilot.
Bereavement Groups
We all experience loss during our lives and sometimes it can be very tough to get through it. The Hospice Society of the Co-lumbia Valley offers Bereavement Support Groups that can be a huge help. They have two sessions coming up very shortly, including one designed for folks that have been affected by suicide. Groups are limited to 10 participants and will be scheduled to accommodate the partici-pants. These groups can be a huge help for folks that are suffering. Don’t feel shy or ashamed, grief is a natural behavior. Call 250-688-1143 for more information.

Recycle… we hear a lot about recycling these days and it is a great way to have less going into our landfills. The Invermere Thrift Store is a fantastic way to recycle your slightly used clothing and housewares but the store does not have room for furni-ture or big items. An item that the store constantly needs are the plastic grocery bags like the Sobey’s or AG bags. These are used for store pur-chased items so please feel free to drop your plastic grocery bags off at the dona-tion station located at the back of the store. Thanks.
Volunteer Based
There are many events in the Columbia Valley and a lot of them are run by volun-teers. The Bonspiel on the Lake is one such event. Preparing the ice is a very labour-intensive job over a few days. Thanks to Perry, Phil and the ice crew. Planning and preparing the banquet is also a tough job but very important. And putting together a list of teams and playing sched-ule is also a huge part of the event. There is also assembling the cook shack and operating it plus the tear down on the Monday after the spiel. So a huge thanks to everyone who is in-volved in the Bonspiel on the Lake and any other event in the valley. Volunteers are awesome. Thanks also to all the businesses and indi-viduals who support events by donating prizes, etc. You are also awesome.

Marketing
No matter how good your business/service/product is, unless you get the word out, you will never reach your full potential. And finding an effective and affordable means of marketing makes it all that much better. Now I am slightly biased, but I believe that there is no other choice but The Valley Peak. Everyone in the valley reads it and they enjoy it. Happy readers always in-creases advertising success. It is very affordable. $30 or less for an ad. If that only brings in a couple new clients, the ad has paid for itself. You do not have to spend a lot of money to reach everyone in the valley. Email [email protected] and help your business grow.

Keep at it folks. The Station Neighbour-hood Pub is still donating a dollar from every pint and three bucks from every jug towards new audio-visual equipment for the new Invermere Community Hall. Owners Jason and Justin will match the donations. They are hoping to donate $25,000 so they will match up until $12,500 has been contributed. Currently $8,096 has been raised and it is still climbing. So if you are in the mood for a refreshing hops-based beverage, head to The Station and support the Arts in our community.

The Columbia Valley Rockies had a fan-tastic weekend on the road taking away wins in both Creston and Golden. That gives the Rockies a pretty solid lead for the fourth and final playoff spot. They are hosting the Golden Rockets here on press day, Tuesday, January 17. It should be a good game. The Rockies are on the road again this weekend in Castlegar and Beaver Valley. The Beaver Valley Nighthawks are having a very strong season, leading the whole league. The next home games are Friday and Sat-urday, January 27and 28, hosting the Kim-berley Dynamiters and the Golden Rock-ets. Come on out and join the community supporting live junior hockey right here in our town.

New Playground Fundraiser
The Windermere Valley Child Care Society is in the process of fundraising for a new playground structure. Their goal is $110,000 to cover the costs. They are cur-rently over $90,000 and are hoping to reach their goal by June of this year. If you are interested in making a contribu-tion, call 250-342-3168 or visit www.gofundme.com.
What Year Was It
(From page 4) In 1966, a house cost $14,200, a car was $2,650 and the aver-age annual income was $6,900. Rock Em Sock Em Robots were released, ‘It’s a Small World’ opened in Disneyland, Cae-sar’s Palace opened in Las Vegas, Bobby Hull set a record with 51 goals and the Toyota Corolla was put on the market.
The Hulk
I was going door to door talking about cli-mate change. It was exciting at Bruce Ban-ner’s house. He turned green immediately.
There’s the Puck
Congratulations to Monica Simmonds for placing the puck in last week’s contest. Monica wins 2 passes to Windermere Val-ley Golf Course and 2 tickets to Rockies hockey games. Get your entry in every week for chance to win golf passes, restaurant gift certificates and hockey tickets. It is fun and easy to do. Find out more on page 8.
Roast Pork Loin
The Invermere Legion has a great dinner this Friday evening (as always actually). Enjoy a roast pork dinner with veggies, potatoes, salad, dessert and a beverage for only $17.50. It is always very enjoyable. While there purchase tickets for the 50/50 and meat draws. You may walk away as a winner. The Legion has poker and cribbage on Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm as well as darts on Saturdays at 2 pm. Visit the Legion cook shack down on the lake at Kinsmen Beach this weekend as they are serving the Bonspiel on the Lake. The food is great and the atmosphere is wonderfully unique.
Mike Gray
Congratulations to Mike on winning the Radium by-election for a counselor. He will do a great job.

All You Need
Are you planning a day out in the cooler weather? Maybe ice fishing or skating on the Whiteway? Make sure you are prepared. Canadian Tire has everything you need from warm gear to heating pads to sporting equip-ment. It is a one-stop shop for winter activi-ties. Stop in an check them out.
Down with the Flu
It is crazy how important our health is. I came down with something flu-like on the weekend and it sucked the energy right out of me. I can’t believe how weak and tired the body can feel from illness. Take care of yourselves out there and if you are feeling crappy, my recommenda-tion is to drink lots of water and get lots of rest.
Where I Was
The photo on page 6 is an old one that I have used before. Obviously it is the Bonspiel on the Lake, but it is one of the original years. The dark-haired guy sweep-ing is Perry, our current ice-maker for the spiel. This photo is from the mid 1980s.
Pond Hockey Championship
Another fantastic event on Lake Winder-mere. The Pond Hockey Championship is coming up next weekend, January 27 to 29. Lots of teams from all over will be out there enjoying the competition. It is hosted by the Columbia Valley Rockies. Head down to the Kinsmen Beach area and check it out.
Closed for Renos
Fairmont Pizza & Ice Cream Parlour are closed for a couple of weeks for renova-tions. It will be tough on me as that is a regular stop for me during Fairmont paper deliveries. They will be re-opening on Fri-day, January 27.
Blue Monday
The third Monday of January is considered ‘Blue Monday’ as the most depressing day of the year. People are dealing with bills from the holidays, cold weather, and by now, many New Year’s resolutions have started to fall by the wayside. Ironically, that is today, as I am writing this. It is depressing, haha. But hang in there folks. The days are getting longer and spring is getting closer.
Stress
I often wonder if Neil Diamond’s original name was Neil Coal. He changed it to Dia-mond because of all the pressure.
Changing World
It is Trump time. Donald is inaugurated this Friday, January 20. Congratulations to him I guess. It has been an entertaining show so far so I am sure it will be even more exciting once he is in. But who knows, maybe this is what the world needs. Or maybe it is the opposite of what the world needs. I guess we will find out soon enough. I did hear an extraordinary quote today. “Donald Trump did not create this chaos. People like him have been created by the chaos”. This is a good time to mention that I really love living in the Columbia Valley.
Way Behind
Being under the weather for the last couple of days has definitely left me with a chal-lenge getting this issue together. I am hop-ing that it is still informative and entertain-ing for you.
